  • The Gmail application for Android devices such as unlocked Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc, Xperia Play, etc.. has received its update and will now allow for users to add label specific ring tones. They continually update their application for the Android operating system but the new version, which is version 2.3.5 is going to make it even better. The two top features that they are going to include will be the ability to only sync high priority messages within your inbox, which should save a little bit of battery life and keep unimportant messages away from you so that you are not distracted, as well as the ability to set notifications and ring tones for certain labels within your inbox. This means that you can separate friends and friendly and get a specific ring tone in each instance.

A number of new features are planned, like remembering the show pictures auctions for specific senders and the ability to toggle between a sticky message and all orientations. The new update will allow for the version to save bandwidth and battery by only sinking priority mail that you have labeled your self, as well as the ability to use filters, labels and ringtones. The ability to turn off sticky message actions in landscape and all other orientations has also been added.

In all, this is a very solid update for the platform it looks as though it will be one of the best that we have seen as of late for the Gmail application. Google is constantly updating the Gmail application but this is easily the update that has the most exciting features that we have seen. Moving forward you can bet that features like this will become standard in other applications as a result of how popular and has been within the Gmail application. Hopefully they will continue to add updates like this one in the future that bring high value features to the platform.

Non-Standard Gaming Content Reaches a Spend of $1.85B in Q1

  • The all in analytical company, the Nielsen company, has announced that the usage of smart phone data has risen as much as 89% in the United States over the course of the first quarter of 2011.  The data consumed is rising at a very fast pace, and it appears that the largest users of data and the smart phone era or android users such as unlocked Xperia Arc, Samsung galaxy II, etc...  During the same period of time during 2010, the average smart phone user only used about 230 MB of data on their device.  However last quarter, the number went up significantly, about 89%, to as much as 435 MB of data over that same period of time.  The heaviest amounts of data that was used among the top 10% of all users of smart phones went from 1.8 GB during that quarter to 4.6 GB during that quarter.  Keep in mind, that these are the largest users of data in the smart phone era, and are not representative of all smart phone users.

    Smartphone Data Rises Significantly

However, during the same amount of time the average cost to the user or per megabyte for smart phone data, dropped as much as 46% over that same period.  This shows that data is becoming progressively less expensive for most users, and shows that even though the amount of data that is being used is going up, it does appear to be getting cheaper.  The largest majority of users use very small amounts of data.  The largest amount of data was used by users in the 99th and 98th percentile, who used the bulk of the data that was gathered.  The cost of data per megabyte was $.14 in the first quarter of 2010.  This number dropped all the way down to eight cents per megabyte last quarter.

It is interesting to see that android users are the largest users of data.  One would think that I phone users would be the largest users of data based on the number of people that own them.  Perhaps the low level of intrigue that makes the unlocked iPhone 4 so popular is one of the reasons why users do not use as much data.  Also, the fact that it is a closed interface could lead to more users using less data than Android users, which utilize an open interface.

  • Whistler Creates Mobile Lift TicketsThe Whistler Blackcomb app is here, and will add another level of flexibility to users who just do not want to wait in line in order to get their lift tickets. The new app will be available, for free, to both unlocked iPhone 4 and Android users. The new app will allow for users to get a number of features that skiers would be interested in having.

First of all, you will be able to see the weather on the hills which is definitely something that most skiers and snowboarders would be interested in. Then, you will be able to see the kind of condition that the hills are in, which is another important part of taking a ski trip. Finally, you will be able to take a look at the status of all of the lifts in the park, take pictures, and even look at some of the cameras that they have set up around the park. You can even track how high you are on the mountain, and then share it via your favorite social networking site.

Perhaps the best option that the app will have is the ability to use their cell phone such as unlocked Sony Ericsson Xperia Play as their lift ticket. Users will not have to purchase a paper ticket any more and instead will be able to purchase the lift ticket on their mobile device, and present that to the lift operators at the top of the park.

    Whistler Creates Mobile Lift Tickets

The app is not currently available but the company said that they expect it to first become available in the near future. It is undoubtedly one of the best and most innovative apps for skiers and snowboarders that we have seen yet. Look for other ski resorts to adopt similar technology here in the near future. It is definitely something that any skier or snowboarder would be interested in.

  • Google Gets Rid of Malware Posed as angry Birds AdditionsGoogle has been hard at work to get rid of the apps that have made it into their marketplace that contain malware for the Android operating system such as unlocked Samsung Galaxy II, Xperia Play from Sony Ericsson. This is the third time a batch of Android malware has been discovered and has essentially been labeled “Plankton.” Apparently the app had the ability to access a server for instructions on what the app should do next.

This is a pretty stealthy was for these developers to get their malware into the Android marketplace. With all of the questions that have arisen in recent weeks as a result of all of the malware that has been found in the Android marketplace it is apparent that Google is doing everything in their power to root out the issues.

Unlike previous apps, Plankton did not use holes in the security of the phone to attack the user, but instead called to instructions that were stored on another server to do its dirty work. They also chose to promote the app as an add on to Angry Birds, which is easily one of the most popular games in the history of mobile. It will certainly be interesting to see how these apps are packaged in the future to get an idea of what to avoid. The hackers also packaged the apps as Cheat Apps for Angry Birds, which helped the apps to spread much more quickly. Previous apps utilized trojan horses that infiltrate the phone such as LG Eve GW 620 unlocked, HTC Desire, etc.. and send text messages to numbers, driving up the cost for the user. Google continues to fight the malware attacks but it is clear that people are looking to exploit vulnerabilities in the operating system. It will be interesting to see how Google responds to these threats moving forward and whether or not they will be able to put an end to the uploading of illegal materials.

  • The first commercial for the XPERIA Play has made its way online in recent days, just in time for some Superbowl action. The unlocked cell phone is one that Sony Ericsson has not publicly acknowledged since it was first announced online. The new Xperia play commercial shows the Android logo getting a back room procedure to give it thumbs, presumably so that it can use the controller interface for the XPERIA Play.

The commercial did not give any information about the pricing or release date of the phone. But, the fact that they are starting to push and promote it means that you can probably expect some information to come out at the MWC in just a few weeks.

The XPERIA Play has had a number of videos leak of it being used. Of course, the phones and devices in the video are probably just prototypes, and with the hype surrounding the phone you can expect the specs to be bulked up. As of right now, all signs point to the unconfirmed specs being a 1 GHZ Qualcomm Snapdrogon processor, a slide out controller with joysticks for playing the games, a 5 megapixel camera that can record HD video quality, and a large 4 inch touchscreen that should be great for playing your favorite games from the recently announced Sony game marketplace.

So far Sony has not given out much information regarding the potential games that you could see for the device, but it is believed that PSP games might be added to their Sony Game Suite for the launch of the XPERIA Play. The game suite will also reportedly feature a number of different third party games, specifically designed for Android devices such as Xpeia X10 unlocked. Expect more details about the device to become available in the coming week, especially with the first commercial leaked.
