  • Through filing by the FCC, it appears that Sprint is set to launch a new phone to their Android lineup. The goes by the name of the ZTE N860 which is not the greatest of names but as with others will probably change once it get closer to actually being released to the public.

Sprint To Launch The ZTE N860 - Gets FCC Approval

Specifications of the device are not known, the only reference available online are a photo or two showing what the mobile phone looks like. Based on the photo, it appears that the phone is on the medium scale in terms of features as the user interface appears detailed enough suggesting a lot of features are included on the phone.

Sprint To Launch The ZTE N860 - Gets FCC ApprovalThe interesting thing about this release is that it marks the first time that a major national mobile carrier will carry an Android phone manufactured by ZTE. There has been a ZTE phone released in the past but that was on a local level when cricket released the ZTE Score. This could be a sign of things to come since ZTE is readily available in other countries around the world.

ZTE may not be a commonly known name to date. Rest assured that they will soon be as common as some of the other well known brands. In fact, Microsoft has officially made ZTE an official Windows Phone Mango partners licensed to use it. With back to school in full swing and the holiday season around the corner, this release is the beginning of what will be a steady stream of phones getting approval from the FCC and Bluetooth SIG.

There have been times where these FCC approvals do not end up getting released. The fact that the landscape of the industry changes fast does not guarantee it will be released.

  • The United States broadband companies have been notorious for not providing cell phone users such as unlocked Samsung Galaxy S Fascinate, HTC Incredible, etc with the speeds that they have advertised when they sign up. Now, it appears that these companies are approaching levels that they have advertised and are getting faster. Most of the limits that these companies advertise are far from what they offer and they have not been able to put together the speed that they have been advertising so far. A study that was recently conducted by the Federal Communications Commission states that a number of Internet service providers throughout the US have been getting between 80 and 90% of the speed that they have advertised their users. This is a level that we have not seen companies operate out in the past and you can bet that these rates will continue to increase following this report.

US Broadband Nearing Speeds That Were Advertised

The report examined 13 of the nation’s top Internet service providers including the likes of Comcast, AT&T, Verizon, and even Time Warner. Three of the most popular broadband technologies that were included when the study was conducted included cable, fiber optics, and DSL. The data rates have been close to the speed that was advertised according to the report, which is much better than some of the previous reports that have been released. US companies have been notorious for not getting anywhere close to the advertised rates of their plans, but this recent support suggests that perhaps these companies have been working on making it an overall better experience for users who have been somewhat let down by the speeds not coming anywhere close to the level that was advertised when they signed up for the plan. It will be interesting to see how these numbers change moving into the future, but this can only be looked at as a good thing by the millions of users were currently utilizing American ISPs for their internet and data.

  • N64 Emulator Arrives on Android
Posted on March 8, 2011 by Pure Mobile

Emulators technically exist in a grey area, legally, but they have been present on Android for quite some time. There are many different emulators that are currently available on the Android such Unlocked Samsung Captivate i897, HTC Desire, etc. , starting with the original Nintendo and going all the way up through the original Playstation. Absent from the Android market was an emulator that most had been waiting anxiously for - a Nintendo 64 emulator. That has finally been addressed by the same person who was behind the creation of previous emulators, going by the name yongzh.

The emulator will require that you have a fairly powerful device in order to run the app, but so far it looks as if everything works as you might expect. Technically, you are supposed to own the N64 cartridge when downloading the ROMs, but of course this is an issue that is overlooked.

The touchscreen only handsets will allow you to control all of the game exclusively from the touchscreen. It might be a little hard for you to control them as well as you could with a controller, but nonetheless this should open up a lot of different games for use on your Android devices. It is a bit surprising that an N64 emulator has not made its way to Android devices previous to this.

Right now, the emulator will only cost around $6, which seems to be a fair price. You might want to look around and see what games you can find prior to downloading the emulator. Also keep in mind that these emulators exist within a legal grey area. Eventually, this issue could be addressed, especially because the emulators are not being made available for free, and instead rquire that you pay for them. Bring back memories when the N64 ruled the land of games.
