  • Ah the New Year. Once we've all had our fill of overeating, sleeping late, and maybe drinking a few too many cups of eggnog, it's time to return to reality, and a slightly more austere daily routine.

But it's also a good time to look back on the past twelve months and consider what we could change for the better in the coming year. At pure mobile, we're doing just that, but with a tech spin.

We're calling out five common bad tech habits to work on in the New Year. But don't worry, we've also got some simple solutions to help you keep your mobile resolutions in 2013.

    1. Exercise more

Let's face it, you've probably eaten enough turkey and sweets in the past two weeks to make the prospect of non-elasticized waistbands seem like cruel and unnecessary punishment. And, if you're like most of us, even if you return to your normal diet, you'll still find a couple of extra pounds you'd like to lose after all that feasting.

Getting out there and doing a bit of exercise can be a lot more fun if you can listen to your favorite music and stay connected while you break a sweat. And a handy armband for your Mp3 player or smartphone, like Griffin's Adidas MiCoach Armband for iPhone 5, will keep your device securely in place, for hands-free entertainment throughout your whole workout.

Stay connected while you work out with the Griffin Adidas MiCoach Armband for iPhone 5

    2. Be more discreet about checking your phone

The funny thing is, no one bats an eye when someone they're talking to checks their watch, but whipping out your smartphone mid-conversation is still considered pretty rude. So, if you can't completely break the bad habit of checking your phone constantly (whether someone is talking to you or not), you can at least try an be a little less obvious about it.

Stay updated while still being discreet with a Bluetooth-enabled smartwatch, like Sony's Smart Watch, which syncs with your phone and allows you to check updates from your email and social media accounts with the flip of your wrist.

Master mobile etiquette: Sony Mobile's Smart Watch is a more discreet way to stay updated

    3. Take better care of your valuables

Already made your way through a few phones in 2012? Busted your new tablet just a few weeks in? Try to be safe, rather than sorry in 2013, and invest in a heavy-duty case for your most prized devices. Otterbox's Defender line comprises some of the most protective, durable cases on the market.

And with cases for iPhone and iPad, as well as for BlackBerry and Samsung phones, you'll be able to make sure your phone or tablet makes it through the coming year without a scratch.

OtterBox's Defender cases for iPhone, iPad, Samsung and BlackBerry are some of the most durable on the market

    4. Drive more safely

If you have the bad habit of consistently texting and talking on the phone while you drive, your resolution this year should probably be to drive more safely. Lucky for you, keeping that resolution should be easy with a good car kit, like Blue Ant's S4 Bluetooth Car Kit.

It's totally voice-controlled so you never have to take your hands off the wheel or your eyes off the road. And it comes loaded with features, like a 2,000 phone number capacity, text to speech for caller ID, background noise reduction, and multipoint capabilities so you can connect 2 phones at a time.

Total voice control makes for safer driving with Blue Ant's S4 Bluetooth Car Kit

    5. Return to long-form communication

Don't get us wrong. Text messages are great, succinct, to the point. But there are just some things that are best left to the long form of letters and email. If you find yourself texting things like "luv u" and "srry yur grandma died," make an effort this year to say more, even if you're sending a message from your touchscreen phone.

With HipStreet's Keyboard Case for iPhone, you'll have the typing ease of a full keyboard wherever you go. The case's Bluetooth keyboard slides out whenever you feel the need to send a message that doesn't fit within Twitter's character limit. So you can say more when it really matters.

Choosing a gift for a fashionable friend can be hard, especially when they already tend to treat themselves to whatever tickles their fancy.

Why not give them one more way to accessorize with a selection of stylish cases for their iPhone, Android device, or BlackBerry? A brightly colored, boldly patterned or glamourously sparkling smartphone case, like one of the trendy models from iSkin OtterBox, or Incase, will make the perfect addition to their already extensive wardrobe.

For the Kids: Tablet Creativity from Crayola and Griffin

If it weren't for their price tag and fragility, it might seem tablets were made expressly for children. Kids love laying with iPads and a gift that'll let them do so without damaging the device will score big with the little ones – and their parents.

Griffin and Crayola have partnered for just such a purpose on some products that allow kids to safely interact with tablets, like the Crayola Trace & Draw, and Crayola Color Studio – drawing and coloring tools that will keep the kids busy and the hardware safe.

  • "Yeah, keep your eyes on the road, your hands upon the wheel." – The Doors, 'Roadhouse Blues'

Is there anything so sweet as a good, old-fashioned road trip?

Traveling by car has been an American institution practically forever, a rite of passage that every young person has to go through. Good tunes, a road map, and all the time in the world – that much hasn't changed.

But what has changed is that nowadays, we've got our music, maps and more all in the same place. Let's face it, smartphones are now a part of that tradition of hitting the open road and looking for adventure.

And Pure Mobile is rounding up the must-have mobile accessories that'll make your road trip that much easier – nevermind safer – with some of our favorite essentials for long car rides.

    1: Car Chargers

Moshi Revolt Car Charger for iPhone, iPad and iPod

No matter what, every road tripper with a smartphone needs a car charger. Even if you're resting between stops, we wouldn't count on waiting for the hotel or motel to charge your device.

In fact, once you get to a rest stop, a dead phone battery isn't such a big deal anyway. It's losing power when you're on the road that's an issue, especially if you get lost.

If you're planning on taking multiple devices, Moshi makes a great car charger that works across al iDevices – iPhone, iPad and iPod alike.

And if you're traveling with buddies, a universal phone charger, like Dexim's Twin USB Car Charger, will let you charge any kind of phone, from BlackBerry to Android to iPhone. It's even got two ports, so you can charge two devices at the same time.

    2. Car Holder/Mount

Griffin In-Car Window Mount for Smartphone or MP3 Player

Back in the day, your dad had your mom to distractingly flap a road map in his face. Nowadays, you have a passenger who waves around their smartphone with a maps app on, or you fumble between the wheel and your own device.

On a long trip, this kind of amateur setup just doesn't cut it, and a simple car window mount or smartphone holder will easily fix all that.

Lots of holders, like Griffin's In-car Window Mount, will work with almost every phone model and even with MP3 players. Do your so-pilot – and yourself – a favor and get one.

    3. Bluetooth Car Kit

One quick way to ruin a road trip? Get pulled over for using your phone while driving.

Seriously, if you haven't got a BlueTooth car kit by now, don't you think it's about time? Plantronics and Novero both offer convenient models that'll let you navigate, talk, and listen to music hands-free.

Considering that half the fun of going somewhere by car is the time you spend getting there, you don't really want to waste the trip fumbling with your phone when you could be rolling down the windows and taking in the sights.

    Bon voyage from Pure Mobile!

A new, bolder Samsung is working on building its own loyal legions of fans. Lately they’ve been doing everything right: building great cell phones like the Samsung Galaxy S3, Galaxy S2, Galaxy S2 X, Galaxy S2 LTE, Galaxy Nexus and the Galaxy Note and Galaxy Tab tablets.

Samsung has put out some entertaining commercials showing lines of iPhone-obsessed hipsters who’ll buy anything Apple because they think it makes them look cool. While those commercials were definitely fun, Samsung is sending a big message:  Samsung’s products are cool because they are extraordinary, not because they are “Samsung.”

In order to take a chunk out of Apple’s market share, Samsung knows it needs to redefine the way its products are viewed by consumers.  The head of Samsung marketing Younghee Lee told AllThingsD in an interview awhile ago,” Especially in U.S., people are obsessed with Apple. It’s time to change people’s attention.” Lee said Samsung knows it has to figure out how to “engage with consumers from the bottom of their heart, and not just be a big and functional and rational and reasonable brand.” Samsung is looking to create an Apple-like fervor for its products.

Samsung kicking Apple to the curb

Samsung has a reputation for being pretty slow with bringing its accessories online. Industry leading manufacturers continue to provide the greatest selection of top brand cell phone accessories  from Bags and Sleeves, Batteries, Bluetooth Headsets and Bluetooth Car Kits, Car Holders, Cases and Skins, Data Cables, Earbuds and Headsets, Keyboard and Protectors, Memory Cards, Screen Protectors, Speakers and Docks as well as Stylus and Pens.

It looks like Samsung is starting to accomplish its mission.  Lines formed outside of a few London retailers earlier this week in anticipation of the release of Samsung’s Galaxy S III.  The lines are nothing like the ones formed by Apple devotees, but they are lines nonetheless.

    Se the latest Samsung video:

The global launch of Samsung’s Galaxy S 3 is off to an impressive start. It’s getting the attention of the mainstream media, the blogosphere, and social media. Samsung leads the global smartphone market for numbers, now we’ll see if they can create frenzy for everything Samsung.

During its unveiling at the Mobile World Congress in February the reception for the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 was not what Samsung expected.

Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 redesigned for a S-Pen slot

A similar the C-Pen has a great stylus design that imitates the press of a finger, but with a finer tip that makes taking notes and revising documents more accurate.   View the latest in Stylus pen technology from top brands such as Incipio, Targus, Kensigton, Griffin, HTC and of course Samsung.

One of the big flaws of the tablet was lack of a place to place to store the S-Pen. Samsung took it back for a redesign and the tablet now includes a slot to hold the advanced S-Pen stylus. While the stylus had to be slimmed down to fit inside the tablet, there will be a holder kit available for those who want the larger S-Pen feel.

A classic attribute of technology is that it continuously evolving at light speed into more powerful applications and features.  In stride to technological advances, consumer’s behavior has consistently kept text messaging a repeatable revenue source and a sustainable ROI for service providers and carriers across the world. Alas, the halcyon days of text messaging may quickly be coming to a close if recent reports are any indication of trends.  Experience the convenience of online shopping for unlocked cell phones and mobile device accessories.  Discover wide selection of top quality, innovative protective bags, sleeves and cases as well as premium electronic accessories from the industry's most leading brands.   An accessory solution for every lifestyle... this is personal. This is you.  This is shopping simplified.

AT&T and Verizon Brace For a Shock As Texting Declines

A recent column in Forbes outlines that text messaging rates are declining in many countries around the world. The report metrics were based on the text messages sent this past Christmas Eve as it is one of the highest messaging days of the year.  As Tero Kuittinen, the author of the article and a senior analyst for MGI Research wrote of the Finnish wireless carrier: Sonera - 'As the major carrier of the Scandinavian country, it is a great marker for that country’s trends. Christmas Eve of 2010, 10.9 million messages had been exchanged. The same day a year later saw a drop to 8.5 million.  This kind of decline was also seen in Hong Kong and other highly populated metropolises... with the fall off may being as high as 14%.  Get powered up for work, life and play easily and conveniently with the latest collection of desktop chargers, wall chargers and car chargers.   Get all the power and energy you need for the mobile lifestyle.

These numbers may seem contradictory considering how consumers leverage cell phones foor both communications and as a pocket PC.  Do we talk more? Nope. Traditional texting is down? Yup. Are we using our phones as a multi media tool? You betcha. So where does this equation balance? The word “traditional.” Organic Facebook and Twitter support on Apple and Google smartphones is changing how we communicate. Add in email and free messaging apps (MMS versus SMS) and there is a recipe that doesn’t bode well for carriers and cuts the bonds of contracts and messaging packages that have lined their pockets for approximately 15 years.  Discover the widest online selection of Bluetooth Headsets and BlueTooth Car Kits.  Latest technology from top brand manufacturers.  Hands free functionality is designed for the interactive 'on the go' lifestyle and allows safe driving

When considering the increasing popularity of unlocked phones and the growing power of mobile consumers, this news should be closely considered by US carriers like AT&T and Verizon. Kuittinen noted in the Forbes article that for these major American carriers the next few years could see their earnings growth markedly decline. No surprise when “as much as 20% of carrier earnings are derived from text messaging.”  These players will seriously have to reconsider their strategy and plans to capture the business from unlocked phone users and the continuing evolution of messaging.

  • Carrier IQ to face the Feds
Posted on December 16, 2011 by Pure Mobile

    By Aldo Panessidi

Carrier IQ is getting beat up. Amid the flurry and speculation around the use of its stealth-ware on handsets for certain carriers, the company now has to contend with a federal investigation. This is prompted by the software’s ability (and use of that ability) to track a number of activities conducted on smartphones including SMS and browsing without the users’ knowledge. And then sends that information to the carrier to use it as they see fit. Alas, it doesn’t take a legal eagle to note the potential for serious privacy law infringements.   Unlocked cell phones provide an excellent way to protect yourself against carrier tracking your personal SMS and mobile usage.

Carrier IQ to face the Feds

In the wake of this bombshell, The Washington Post reports that Carrier IQ execs met with officials from the FCC (Federal Communication Commission) and also with the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) on Tuesday. The article also included this response from the Carrier IQ representative, Mira Woods, “We are complying with all investigations at this time as we have nothing to hide […] we have been completely transparent through this process.”  Leaving your valuable mobile devices unprotected is risky!  Discover the latest in innovative protection solutions...   stylish top brand bags, sleeves and cases allow you to protect your devices from scratches and blemishes.  Tough on the outside, sweet on the inside our brand name protection accessories combine complete device coverage with sleek artistic expression.

Questions regarding these practices and technology first arose this September which Carrier IQ was able to quell. Unfortunately for the software company, a security researcher by the name of Trevor Eckhart recently thrust the company back into the spotlight and now into the arms of the FTC and FCC. While Carrier IQ insists that its software is actually innocuous and “collects enough information to understand the customer experience with devices on our network and how to devise solutions to use and connection problems,” Eckhart was able to prove that the company actually collected and shared data that could include personal data, location information, and key strokes. What better advertisement for unlocked smartphones is there?  Discover the widest online selection of Bluetooth Headsets and BlueTooth Car Kits.  Latest technology from top brand manufacturers.  Hands free functionality is designed for the interactive 'on the go' lifestyle  and allows safe driving.

Carrier IQ to face the FedsAs this is the kind of scandal that breathes life into 1984-esque conspiracy theories, it is no surprise that Tuesday also brought further allegations were made against the FBI, insinuating that the bureau may also be taking advantage of this technology to silently spy and collect information on smartphone users. The prompt for this accusation was the denial of a Freedom of Information Act request made to the bureau in regards to the Carrier IQ scandal. Consumers would be well advised to research the practices of carriers and manufacturers in this matter and leverage unlocked cell phones to protect privacy and information.

Smartphone manufacturers and carriers alike have also entered the fray to let the public know whether they use Carrier IQ’s software or now. Unfortunately, a public that feels betrayed and spied upon (and is still unaware of exactly what information has been gathered and shared from their smartphone usage) is not at ease or consoled by their statements. No doubt, class action lawsuits will be the next step in this ever unraveling drama.
