Blackberry App UpdateLooks like BlackBerry is angling to infuse some more « Crack » back into the once dominant brand with some BlackBerry app updates this week. What do those updates look like? Twitter for BlackBerry will be available for an update to version 2.1.0.28 that includes improved support for the BlackBerry Curve and Pearl users out there. According to company officials, “BlackBerry Curve and BlackBerry Pearl users are now able to view a users profile page from an @Mention.” Discover the latest unlocked Blackberry cell phones including the Blackberry Bold 9900

If you’re a BlackBerry user that hasn’t updated in a while, a version upgrade earlier this month includes support for multiple accounts and also for BBM sharing.  Both of these should be searchable in App World for manual updates too. And if behind on these updates, you may enjoy taking a look at the available tablets and newest BlackBerry gadgets to continue to optimize your smartphone device.  Accessories are designed to protect, personalize and enhance your mobile devices.  The latest innovative protective solutions and premium electronic accessories from the industry's leading brands.

Blackberry App UpdateFor those of you who are more inclined to use your BlackBerry device to jam out to some tunes on BBM Music (so very rad with a portable speaker for the office), there is good news for Canadian BlackBerry Beta Zone members in a the newest version available for download: 1.1.0.11. Looks to be a major update which will augment the experience with new features that are supposed to also coincide with BBM v6.1 release.  Enhance your mobility... turn your device into a power tool.  Discover our the accessories, stylus & pens, SD micro cards, data cables, desktop chargers, car kits and special glider gloves specifically designed to make your devices functionally efficient and performance rich.

Reports indicate that the most notable changes will be in the music area (so this may be the time to invest in quality headphones!).  Look for integration with BBM that will show what you’re listening to in the BBM status, the ability to request a gift from other BBM contacts for a subscription to BBM Music, and improved playlist creation. At a more technical level, end users may also see improvements from the server side when looking for news releases and other popular content (refuse to include the Kardashian updates as « news »). In general some great performance improvements are bound to be appreciated by BlackBerry users and to breathe some new life into the experience as well!

  • BlackBerry Playbook Jail Broken

Unlocked cell phone? Good. International usage. Saves the consumer money.  Jail broken OS? Bad. Major security concern that creates gaps for hackers to steal information as it is in one of the three states: At rest. In Motion. In use. Translation? Information shared or consumed on your smartphone is vulnerable anytime, anywhere.

BlackBerry Playbook Jail BrokenRIM has a great reputation through its BlackBerry products for ironclad operating systems that kept messages sent over their network secure and encrypted as well as for their overall device security. These glowing features are why BlackBerry cell phones and PlayBook tablets are so widely used throughout the worlds of commerce and government -including Barack Obama - the President of the United States.

For the sake of security, let’s hope that President Obama isn’t using a BlackBerry Playbook as it appears the latest and greatest RIM OS being used on the device has proven to be jail breakable. Hence, vulnerable to information “borrowing.”  Turn your mobile into Power Tools with the latest technological advanced accessories.

Anyone remotely following the mobile industry has likely heard the troubles of the bruised giant, RIM, the past year as it scrambles to keep pace with its competition. The result is an operating system that is more powerful and capable than its predecessors. It also has proven to have an Achilles heel where hackers have the holes to hack, break and manipulate what their predecessors have not been able to.  Evidently a first in RIM history and an unfortunate blight on their impressive record.

As the tablet market is still dominated by Apple and their user groups are well aware of the sport hackers make of breeching their iOS, this news may seem paltry to the traditional RIM user.  But going forward this same BBX OS is what RIM BlackBerry smartphones will be runs on!  Discover the latest accessories for all your Blackberry devices.

    BlackBerry Playbook Jail Broken

There are an exponentially increasing number of incidents of malicious code being written to ferret out information - relative to feed the insatiable appetite of the multi-billion dollar black market data stealing.  Consumers today are in dire need of innovative protection solutions and premium electronic  accessories, antivirus protection, back-up and storage considerations.

If RIM doesn’t address the serious flaw in the BBX OS, their greatest market differentiator and credibility will be compromised to their largest consumer groups: government and enterprises. In a wild Wild West age, information truly is power and tangibly destructive as Julian Assange and Wikileaks globally demonstrated earlier this year.

My guess is President Obama will forfeit a little performance for peace of mind and eschew BBX until a fix is found.

  • There certainly has been a lot of love being spread around Twitter applications in recent weeks.  Earlier this morning Twitter re-launched and rebranded Tweetie 2 as Twitter for iPhone 3 and a few short hours later RIM announced that a revamped version of Twitter for BlackBerry Unlocked Gadget is in route.  This new BlackBerry version will stay in beta for a while and has a bunch of new and user-requested features, including:

    • · Quote Tweets
      • Ability to edit ReTweets
      • · Auto Complete for @ usernames
        • When you type an “@” followed by characters, the auto complete feature pops up a list of users as you type
        • · View Geotagged Tweets
          • View locations of geotagged tweets on BlackBerry Maps
          • · Personal Info Guard
            • Warning appears when sharing personal information (e.g. email address, PIN, phone number)
            • · Hotkeys for Navigation
              • New hotkey functionality has been added for lists, find people, etc.
              • R reply, L reply all, Space page down, F retweet, C compose, D refresh, Alt+0 (home), alt+1 (mentions), alt+2 (lists), alt+3 (profile), alt+4 (inbox), alt+5 (find people), alt+6 (search), alt+7 (popular topics)
              • · Go to User
                • Ability to access any users profile from anywhere in the application using auto-complete functionality for followers
                • · Additional photo viewing support

The new Twitter for BlackBerry code is set to roll out “over the course of tonight and Thursday” according to RIM’s PR team.  The requirements to run this new application include a 64 MB BlackBerry smartphone, Twitter account and an Operating System of 4.5 or higher.

By the sounds of this update RIM has really done a number on their Twitter client.  These new features should make the lives of Twitter users much easier.

  • In a recent survey performed by Crowd Science ArsTecnica is reporting that 40% of BlackBerry users indicated they have plans to switch out their BlackBerry for an iPhone when their contracts are up.  Some other interesting facts that this survey dug up are:

    • 33% of iPhone owners and 16% of BlackBerry owners use their device exclusively for personal use, not work
    • 1% of iPhone owners and 7% of BlackBerry owners use their device exclusively for business purposes
    • 66% of iPhone owners and 77% of BlackBerry owners are using their device for both business and personal purposes

While the 40% might not be all that accurate and is probably a little on the high side, the survey had a margin of error of +/- 10%, it is still an alarming number for BlackBerry to consider.  Even at 30% BlackBerry has to do some careful evaluation of their product to ensure some customer loyalty and not lose their entire customer base to the more personal use friendly iPhone and Droid devices.

This survey should be an eye opener for BlackBerry and show that their consumers are looking for a device that they can use for both their personal and business needs.  By offer some more apps that cover the personal uses their consumers are looking for BlackBerry will certainly be making their current users much happier.
