  • T-Mobile is going to be looking to offer new free signal boosters to their network in order to keep cell phone users such as unlocked Blackberry Bold 9780, HTC Wildfire, etc,, from playing. Over the course of the last few months since the company was sold to AT&T, and they are looking for ways to stop the bleeding in terms of their subscriber base. The move appears to be part of a new program that the company has released. They are looking to put an end to the service quality related cancellations that have been running rampant over the course of the last few months. They have become a significant problem within the company, and even though it looks as though they are going to be acquired pending legal look over of the process, it is not currently clear what the company is going to be able to do in order to stop this out flux of their users.

T-Mobile Looks to Offer Free Signal Boosters

Many other users are canceling their service to the poor coverage in their own home. This is something that was first leaked to the press when an internal e-mail was released that stated that this was one of the country’s biggest problems. The memo that was leaked also warned that they should not be offering signal boosters to customers when they are looking to close the sale. In order to get the signal booster the customers will need to open a new two-year service contract, which suggests that they are looking to keep these customers from canceling their service and are looking to get going on long term. It will certainly be interesting to see if they were going to be able to keep the customers from leaving as a result of that poor service in their own home T-Mobile was acquired by AT&T, but it looks as though this could not go through as the courts are looking into whether or not the acquisition was legal.

  • Research In Motion has been experiencing some difficulties over the course of the last few months. The company announced today that they will be laying off a total of 2000 employees, which accounts for about 10% of their total workforce. The company is looking to better optimize their spending, and the workforce reduction is going to be part of their strategy moving forward. They’re looking for rapid growth within the company after quadrupling their workforce over the course of the last five years. The company, most known for their line of Blackberry devices such as unlocked Torch 9800, Bold 9780, etc.. will also be reorganizing some of their top management positions in an attempt to better position themselves moving forward.

RIM to Reorganize Management and Lay Off 2,000

A number of executives recently left the company, and it is clear what they’re falling profits that they are looking to head in a different direction moving forward. Recently the company lost their vice president of digital marketing and media, as well as their Blackberry PlayBook Senior product manager. It will be interesting to see what kind of changes they made, as it could give some sort of hint as to their strategy moving forward in the future. Depending on the executives that they bring in, it could give some clues on the type of devices and the direction the company is looking to head.

RIM to Reorganize Management and Lay Off 2,000

The company also released a press release regarding their layoffs, stating that they regretted to have to do so but that it was in the best interest of the company. Many in Canada were hoping that the company would be able to turn things around and keep their current workforce, after going through a number of layoffs previously as well. It will be interesting to see if they are able to turn things around with the reorganization of their management and regain market share that they have lost two other companies in recent years.

  • Sound Charge T-Shirt Charges Phone While You ListenIt seems as if every day there is a new device that comes out that allows you to charge your phone such as unlocked iphone 4 while you’re on the go.  Now the company Orange Sound has released a new quirky way for you to charge your phone when you’re out and about.  The company will be releasing a T-shirt that will generate an electronic charge from the sound around the phone.  The idea is that the church will create an electronic charge while users are out of concerts and shows, and then their phone can be plugged into the shirt to maintain its charge while they are out and about.  This is an interesting and quirky way for users to charge their phone even while they are out of their favorite concerts.  The company has not gone much farther than explaining that harnessing the power of the vibrations around the shirt are involved in creating the charge.

So far they have not released any information about how much of a charge, or how long your phone will stay charge for when you’re using the T-shirt.  We would expect that the charge would not be very strong; it might just give your phone a few extra minutes of life while you were out at the concert.  However, it will probably make a great fashion statement that you can show off to your friends while you’re out and about.  As far as we can tell, the louder the environment that you’re in, the more charge the shirt will receive.  At the very least, the shirt will be great for starting conversations with people that you don’t know while you’re out and about.

Sound Charge T-Shirt Charges Phone While You Listen

Every day it seems as if there are new ways to charge your device, but most of them that have been released in recent times appear to be gimmicks.  A T-shirt that charges your phone based on the vibrations around you is not really all that feasible, but is an interesting concept that one day may grow into something larger and the interest in the shirt that we have seen so far is any indication.

  • Sources from BlackBerry have confirmed that version 6.1 of BlackBerry Desktop Manager might be coming in the very new future. The update will allow for compatibility with handsets that run the 6.1 version of the operating system. The app will allow users to better customize and make changes to their desktop to better suit their needs.

One of the biggest additions from the update is the ability for the BlackBerry such as Bold 9780 and unlocked Torch 9800 to forget the previous devices that have been backed up and synced. This is a feature that has been highly anticipated from users of the service.

A few screenshots of the new version of the software have made their way online that show a number of options that are available to users. You can set the Desktop Manager to ensure that the software will start up as soon as the device is connected, automatically check for updates to the software, and allow for Bluetooth connections to be made.

This is a huge update that will bring a number of key features to the BlackBerry desktop software. One of the biggest inclusion in the update is the compatibility with OS 6.1, which had previously not been able to connect to the BlackBerry Desktop Software for BlackBerry Torch 9800, Curve 8520 unlocked, etc .

Although this update does take care of a number of key issues, not every complaint was addressed with this update. Hopefully updates that correspond with software updates to the operating system will be much more timely moving forward. Some users have been waiting quite some time for these updates, and the compatibility with the desktop management software is a key feature for many users. The app also offers advanced offers for companies that use the BlackBerry Enterprise Service, and will allow for you to check and synchronize user certificates. It will be interesting to see if Research In Motion adds more features moving forward.

  • Sprint Gets Rid of Mail In Rebates
Posted on March 30, 2011 by Pure Mobile

Sprint has officially ditched their mail-in rebates model, and is now going to be going with an instant rebate model that provides instant savings to their users. Verizon also made a similar move at the beginning of the year. The move will mostly effect their most expensive cell phone. The idea behind the mail in rebates is that a certain percent of the customers will never take advantage of it and will just choose to pay the extra costs rather than spend the time mailing the rebate in. Also, there were issues with the mail in rebate never arriving, which was a complaint of many who took the time to pursue the rebate.

The information was confirmed by Sprint. The official switch came on March 27th, and will continue well into the foreseeable future. The company has not stated whether or not this switch will be completely permanent, but did make it clear that they were willing to give it a shot for quite some time moving forward.

If the switch is is only a temporary one, the company has not released any information regarding when users can expect it to disappear, so you might want to take advantage of the offer while it was there. The company made the move shortly after the same move was made by Verizon.

It will be interesting to see if other carriers follow in the footsteps of both Verizon and Sprint. Getting rid of the mail in rebate is certainly something that would be in the best interest of their customers, but may not be in the best interests of the company. Look for more companies to make similar changes in the future if it leads to more sales of smart devices. That is the end goal but could result in reduced revenue for the company, which could mean that the offer doesn’t stick around quite as long as many are hoping that it will.

  • As per one of the leading unlocked cell phone blog site, Redbox clarified rumors that they were planning to launch a streaming Netflix competitor later this year. CEO of Coinstar, the company that owns Redbox, confirmed that the service was in the works last year during an earnings call, but did not elaborate on how it would operate or how soon users could expect to use the service. He also did not have any information regarding the pricing model that would be employed with the new service.

Lowe confirmed today that the new service will be a subscription service in the same way that Netflix is run. No further information regarding exact pricing was given. At this point in time, Redbox runs unmanned DVD rental machines that allow users to rent a movie for one dollar per night. These kiosks are usually stocked with the latest new releases in an effort to compete with video rental stores.

Redbox did not reveal whether or not they had a partner for their upcoming streaming service, but it is assumed that they could not operate a subscription based streaming service without first partnering with a company that has the hardware to back up the operation.

Redbox is looking to directly compete with Netflix, after easily taking hold of the movie rental market. With Blockbuster, Hollywood Video, and other movie rental companies struggling to stay afloat with high rent prices, Redbox was ahead of the game when they launched the unmanned do it yourself kiosks that have become highly popular in recent years. It will be interesting to see how well RedBox will be able to compete with Netflix, which has already established themselves as the leader in the streaming market after cutting deals with all of the major console gaming systems, allowing gamers to link right up with their library of streaming movies and play them directly through the console platform.
