  • The CEO and founder of Forrester research, George Colony recent said in a blog post that he thought that the CEO of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, was a “one trick pony” and that he thought that he was overrated in Silicon Valley. Colony claimed that the statement was made because Zuckerberg has been unwilling to change Facebook’s looks and functionality throughout the its history. It is true that Zuckerberg has been reluctant to make huge, sweeping changes in his interface, but with good reason; every time Facebook changes its layout and functionality a large portion of the user base complains about the changes through their status updates.

Throughout his blog post, Colony continues to take shots at Zuckerberg, claiming that he has the “raw material to be a great CEO,” but went on to say that Zuckerberg must first demonstrate that he can turn Facebook into the revenue generating machine that many feel that it should be. Facebook did not post a profitable quarter until several years after it was created, after the site implemented its current advertising system.

Colony seems to think that Zuckerberg should be willing to go out on a limb with his 500 million person user base and explore different ways of monetizing the site. Of course, this can be tricky, as we saw with MySpace where ads and functionality issues seemingly ran many of the users off of the site. Colony might be jumping the gun a bit with this blog post. Other revered CEO’s, such as Steve Jobs, had over a decade to prove how worthy they were to their companies and went on to develop some of the most game-changing ideas in the technology space.

It is strange that Colony would choose to criticize Zuckerberg so publicly, and seemingly toot his own horn. What is the point that Colony was attempting to make, and does he expect it to be well received by the younger generation in the tech community?

  • Back in September, Apple announced their new social networking site called Ping.  The concept of this site is that people would get on there and be able to discuss music with others.  They could follow people to see what they were listening to, and they can also follow different artists to check out the new songs that they released.  It would basically be a variation of Facebook, Twitter, and iTunes combined.  You would get to meet other people, mostly based on having similar tastes in music.  I think that this is a pretty good concept; however, it really did not take off right off the bat.  Even in the past month or so, over a year after it was released, it still remains widely unknown about.

Obviously, there are some other main features about Ping as well other than just getting to know people.  Another feature, just like in ITunes, is that you can easily buy music by going to an artists’ fan page.  The people that have used Ping on unlocked iphone 4 have reported that buying music on this social networking site requires minimal to no effort.  This is a really good sign for people that may want to switch over.  Also, being on Ping pretty much means that you could get rid of ITunes as well.  The only downside is that it does not have as many artists’ as ITunes has – yet.

Apple CEO Steve Jobs sent out an email the other day to all of his iTunes users letting people know about his social networking site.  He reported that Ping already has millions of users and that it is growing fast.  Many could be quite skeptical of his growing fast comment though since he had to send out this e-mail.  However, this does sound like a social networking site to look into.

  • DVPRemote iOS Application
Posted on November 9, 2010 by Pure Mobile

Looking for some more reliable applications to download on your cell phone?  Well look no further than the new DVPRemote iOS application.  This easily replaces your old Roku remote.  This new DVPRemote will enable your unlocked  iPhone 4 or IPod touch to act as your main control mechanism for any Roku set-top box you may have.  An application similar to this has been around the application store for quite some time actually, but this is a newly updated 2.0 version which is supposed to be a lot better.

There is a completely different user interface which is very user friendly, and it even goes above and beyond to make your night go by smoothly.  There is actually a complete integration with Netflix that supports automated Instant Que navigation, full keyboard support for any screen that requires text entry, direct navigation to user-organizable Channels, toolbars for added channel functionality within Netflix and support for the new “Instant Replay”, “Back” buttons, and “Info.”  Not only that, but it is also works with iOS four’s background operation protocol.  This is huge news for people with that.

This application is actually very cheap as well.  Right now you can find it in the applications store for only $2.99.  With its advantages over the old Roku Remote, there is really no reason not to make the switch.  You may think that you are better off just saving your money by keeping your old Roku remote, but if you read some of the information above, you would find out that this new remote has a lot better features that your old or current remote is not capable of doing.  For only $2.99, this is a can’t miss deal, and you should go ahead and ditch that old remote for a new one.  What is there for you to lose?

  • Apple vs Nokia – Pre-trial Hearing
Posted on November 9, 2010 by Pure Mobile

Many people expect it to be a long time before the many arguments between Apple iphone4 unlocked and Nokia over intellectual property ever get fully solved.  However, Espoo got an early ally in the form of the US International Trade Commission.  They said that early in this trial that “the evidence will not establish a violation” on Nokia’s part.  The USITC also went on to say that portions of some patients were invalid and others were really not infringed at all.  Several people know that the judge in this case between Apple and Nokia will most likely not make the decision on this case for another few months.  Most figure that it will probably not be decided until February or even later than that.  The judge also is not obligated for obvious reasons to take the US International Trade Commission’s side of the story.

Also, the USITC comments were only directed at four of the several patents that Apple has against Nokia in a variety of cases.  Not only does Apple have beef against Nokia, but they are also wielding charges against HTC and Motorola.  Pretty rough, right?  If this is true that the USITC only is taking the side of Nokia on four of the patents, and there are actually a lot more than four patents against Nokia, then we can assume that this case will run on for a very long time.  As mentioned above, many people expected that this case would already run on for a long time; February was the estimation, but with there being so many different patents against Nokia, I guess we will never really know.  This could drag on for a lot longer than February in my opinion; it all depends on how long they want this to last.  We will keep you updated on the situation.

  • AT&T Transition for Alltel Customers
Posted on November 9, 2010 by Pure Mobile

Most people would say that Verizon got the better end of Alltel’s consumers after the merge, but now AT&T is trying to get the several customers that fell into their hands on handsets in an effort to get them all switched over to GSM in a timely fashion.  A lot of people who own different Alltel phones are now getting offerings in the mail about different replacement devices they can purchase, and it looks as if all upgrade deals apply to all customers making the transition, regardless to which device they currently have.  An example of some of the mailing offers is a Tritan owner is getting dumbphone promos.

The upgrade offers generally are not a whole lot better than the best upgrade offers they will receive for the other AT&T consumers, but there are a couple of ones that really stand out at you.  For one, you can get Unlocked HTC Aria for absolutely no cost at all, or you can get a Torch for only $100, which is a lot cheaper than its normal price.  The upside to switching is that customers making the switch can cancel out at anytime within the first time without an EFT.  The carrier will not force any of their customers to make the switch yet, but they may change their minds down the line.  They have not even released a date where they will be forcing everyone to switch over either.  Right now, most would consider this an encouragement to try and get everyone to switch over, so that everyone is on the same page.  I do not see why anyone would not want to switch over at this point, especially since there are a lot of great deals on the table with nothing much to lose.  Most likely, you will be forced to switch at some point down the line anyways.

  • In a matter of weeks, you can expect to get an update on your Unlocked Sony Ericsson Aspen Windows Phone 7 to be able to get a copy and paste function.  This was talked about way back in January of this year, and it looks like they are finally getting around to putting this function into action.  This would obviously be a great feature to have, so I am sure plenty of people are looking forward to using it.  This was a statement addressing critics released by Microsoft’s Director of Microsoft Project Arpan Shah:

“Critics have commented on the lack of specific features like copy & paste and lack of 100s of thousands of applications. And while both are true, copy & paste will be available as an update in a matter of weeks (early 2011) and as for applications, it’s just a matter of time.”

As you can see, Arpan Sha does not feel that it will be too long until this application will be available on your phone.  As you probably read, he used the phrase regarding the release “in a matter of weeks.”  His exact time frame was somewhere in 2011 like we mentioned above, and there only about 7-8 weeks left of this year, so I would say this time frame is about right.  Why would it be any longer if “in the matter of weeks” meant a substantial amount more than 8?  I am sure he has this under control.

With this new feature, people should be able to get any work they have to do on their phones much quicker.  If they have to tell someone what another person sent them, then they can easily copy and paste what they put instead of having to type everything up like you do now.  This will obviously save a lot of time.

  • According to a leading cell phone blog, regional wireless provider U.S. Cellular announced that they had a new plan for smart phones that they are touting as “the best value in wireless.”  Those very words would be enough to make enough people excited about this new plan that they are coming out with.  Now, here are some of the details.  The new “Primary Plus Plan” offer customers of smart phones 5GB of data, unlimited text, video, and picture messaging, free GPS navigation, and 450 voice minutes with free incoming minutes for only $69.99 per month.
This is an extremely good deal if you think about it.  For one, there would be enough room on your phone to hold just about anything.  For two, you will obviously have unlimited text, picture, and voice messaging; that seems to be one of the most popular things to do on unlocked cell phones in today’s world – especially text messaging.  Many people send about hundreds, even thousands of texts per day.  The bill can really start adding up, but with this plan it will all be with no extra charge. To top it all off, you can save money on a TomTom or any other leading navigational system that will cost you hundreds, even thousands of dollars because you can use the GPS system on your cell phone for free.  This would actually be even more ideal because it will not take up any extra space in your vehicle.
This plan is mostly aimed at customers who want to purchase their first smartphone.  People who currently have an intelligent phone but do not like how much their monthly bill is would also like to switch over to this plan.  This is a definitely a “can’t miss” deal that you absolutely have to take advantage of.

  • Twitter For Android Updated
Posted on November 5, 2010 by Pure Mobile

Not only did Facebook for Android get updated, but Twitter also got a very important update as well.  Not a whole lot of new features were added, but there were some noticeable ones that people will definitely take a liking to.  One thing that they did that people will definitely appreciate is the speed increase.  In today’s society, people want things fast and they want things now.  With slow loading times, people get tired and stop using that particular application.  With the speed increase, more people will be happy and spend more time tweeting on their phone.
Arguably the biggest addition is the pull-to-refresh, which the unlocked iPhone4 client has actually had for a while.  This is an option bar that is revealed by swiping on a tweet.  There are also some new, fresh quoting options for retweets.  Along with that, all avatar photos are now high resolution, so you can see them as clearly on your phone as you can at home on your computer.  The testers that have tried it out all have had great results and came away extremely happy with the updates.  The testers were most happy with the increased loading speed that was mentioned above.  Unlike older versions of twitter, the avatars will not load right away with the page; they will be a bit slower, but that is to be expected since they are going to be a higher resolution.  They will definitely be worth the wait; you can trust me on that.  The upgraded, as expected, will be free, so there is really no reason not to upgrade.  You will definitely be happy with the upgrade with these featured, even though there was not a whole lot of new ones added.  Increased loading time means more productivity!

  • Samsung Galaxy S First to Be Certified
Posted on November 5, 2010 by Pure Mobile

Two years ago, Samsung’s Omnia was the first DivX certified handset in America.  They really found a niche for being the first to come out with new technology.  They continued that tradition this month by having their Galaxy S be the first smartphone to be Wi-Fi Direct certified.  This is another huge stepping stone for Samsung, and the sells on these should go through the roof.  Samsung is really building a reputation for giving its smartphones the latest and greatest in terms of compatibility.
If you look in the Wi-Fi Alliance’s Wi-Fi Direct certification docket, you will now find the Galaxy S  Unlocked cell phone, also known as the Samsung Vibrant in there.  Many people already predicted that several of Wi-Fi chipsets and modules were going to be green-lit; this is the first actual device to join forces.  Any modern day WiFi device is capable of become Direct certified with relative ease though.  It is definitely now a hard switch; No additional hardware is needed, so any WiFi device can be Direct Certified like mentioned above.  Because of that factor, you could definitely see a lot more smart phones getting Wi-Fi direct in the near future; the Samsung Galaxy S is basically just ahead of the game if you think of it in that aspect – the leader of the pack.
We will continually be on the look out to see if more smartphones follow Samsung Galaxy X’s lead by becoming Wifi Direct Certified in the coming days or months.  You can definitely expect that a lot will, and we will keep you updated on which ones decide to do that.  It is just only a matter of time before they do, as it will only boost their reputation and value.

  • Google's popular Google Maps service is under fire.  While many appreciate the service because they can view actual images of areas they are traveling to, the Street View cars are said to have come across very sensitive personal data that if used, could leave the population at risk.  These Google Maps applications are available for use on all Google Android phones.  While some believe this security breach should be charged with hefty fines for unlawful acts, the Federal Trade Commission feels differently.  After Google admitted they did accidentally steal passwords, emails and personal information of Google Android unlocked cell phones users, the FTC chose to drop the matter and not to issue any exorbitant fines.

The stolen data Google came across has been investigated by the FTC.  Earlier in the week, Google did confirm that their Street View cars used to capture images for their popular Google Maps service did come across passwords and sensitive information.  This public breach of security was completely unintentional and after a serious investigation, the FTC did not find reason to fine Google for this unintentional and unlawful act.  Google has made promises to the FTC that all data that was inadvertently stolen will be destroyed and will not be used in any way.  Because Google has made written assurances, they will not use the sensitive data now or in the future; the FTC has closed the investigation.

With the commitments made to the FTC, Google is said to have dodged a bullet that could have significantly affected their earnings for 2010.  While the Street View car debacle was completely by accident, some consumers are still concerned their information may be at risk.  With the inquiry being closed, consumers can rest assured that all sensitive data obtained will be safe and they have nothing to worry about.
