The latest results are in for NPD Group’s monthly Mobile Phone Track service. It looks like Apple retails it’s top seat as the #1 smartphone vendor in the U.S.

    Smartphone Market Share

Apple’s market ownership continues to strengthen. It’s market share increased by 7% in the first quarter year-over-year. In the past year, Apple’s iPhones were responsible for 29% of all smartphone sales in the U.S. Samsung with Its Samsung Galaxy S2 and the Samsung Galaxy Tablets seems to be the only company breathing anywhere down Apple’s neck.

I wrote another blog indicating that Samsung currently has the titles for the world’s largest smartphone vendor and largest overall mobile phone vendor. In the last year, Samsung recorded huge market share growth of 140%. That gives them ownership of 24% share of the market.

Why the confusion? Many analyst interpret market data differently... in addition a giant like Apple would react fervently to any news saying that its market position has been upset

Apple and Samsung together are responsible for 53% of all smartphones sold in the U.S. LG, HTC, Motorola and RIM sales continue to fall.

“Samsung is the only market leader from the feature phone era to transition to market leadership in the smartphone era in the U.S.,” said NPD analyst Ross Rubin. “Its broad carrier support and advertising – particularly in the ascendant pre-paid segment – have helped it achieve the highest market share among Android handset providers in the U.S.”

    Samsung vs Apple

NPD also reported that Google’s Android operating system is the highest selling mobile platform. Android use is trending in the right direction, and it regained some of the ground it had previously lost to Apple.

Discover select accessories such as; stylus & pens, microSD memory cards, batteries, docking stations, Bluetooth headsets, data cables and XMI Speakers all specifically designed to make your devices functionally efficient and performance rich.

Android smartphone sales grew 24% over the last quarter of 2011 to 61% of the market. Apple iPhone sales are down significantly. The high of 41% in the last quarter is now 29%, a decline of 29%.

Apple is still the People’s Phone. Regardless of what the market share number shows, Apple’s iPhone 4S, iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS still hold the top three spots in NPD’s overall handset ranking for first quarter of 2012. Samsung’s Galaxy S2 and HTC’s EVO 3D round out the top five.

Rubin tries to explain what the poll number show: “After some release of pent-up demand from customers adopting the iPhone 4S, coupled with the company’s strength in the holiday season, Apple’s share fell in the first quarter, as we’ve often see it do in the quarter following its introduction of a new handset. Now that the iPhone is available on Sprint, though, the increased carrier coverage has created a higher baseline for Apple’s share than we have seen in the past.”

Recently released figures from Google about the relative number of devices running a given version of Android are showing an interesting increase in the number of active Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich devices. The numbers, which are based on the number of Android devices that have accessed Google Play within a two week period (ending on 1st May 2012), show that just under 5% of all Android devices now run Android 4.0, of these, the vast majority run 4.0.3 or 4.0.4 rather than 4.0, 4.0.1 or 4.0.2.

    Android version share

Samsung has come through on its promise to release the upgrade to OS 4.0 for Samsung Galaxy S2 on May 3rd.

Google’s Android is now the leading OS platform with 51% of the market. According to a recent MobiLens quarterly survey of mobile subscribers, Android use is growing at almost four times the rate of its closest competitor Apple, that services 30.7% of consumers with their iOS.

    Android Market Share Chart

This phenomenal growth rate can be attributed to the latest releases of Samsung Galaxy S II LTE, HTC One X, Motorola Droid Razr II, LG Optimus L7 and Sony Xperia U as well as form a few of the new tablets including Samsung Galaxy Tab, Acer Iconia and the HTC Flyer

Android’s increase of 3.7% outpaces Apple’s mere 1% to give it the majority of the market. The increase for both of these companies comes at the expense of RIM that dropped 3.7% to 12.3% and Microsoft that registered a 0.8% decrease to 3.9% of the smartphone market. While Symbian held its ground at 1.4%.

These number reflect changes in market share since the poll was done in December 2011.

Google won’t be celebrating a long term victory just yet. Both Microsoft’s Windows 8 and RIM’s Blackberry 10 are due for release in the fall, but are already plagued by negative opinions. The rumor that Microsoft’s new platform might not support the current hardware lineup has sent a ripple of anger and confusion through the Windows Phone community.

BlackBerry 10 may be the best OS version RIM has ever produced, and it’s telling this to the world right now. But at little more than 12% of the current market and a plethora of technical criticism about its lack of gadgets and apps, Blackberry has a lot of PR ahead.

Unless Microsoft and RIM take the market by surprise, it looks like Google and Apple are going to battle it out with each other and continue to eat up their minor competitors’ markets.

    Samsung Defeats Apple

In just one year, Samsung has taken the top spot from Apple as the world’s largest smartphone vendor. Samsung shipped over 42 million phones in 1Q 2012, as opposed to Apple’s 31 million. For Samsung, that’s a one year improvement in their shipment numbers of 267%!

Samsung’s impressive growth doesn’t stop there. The South Korean- based vendor also ousted longtime leader Nokia to become the world’s largest mobile phone vendor by recording a 35% increase in phone shipments during the past year, as opposed to Nokia’s decrease of 24%.

As you would expect, this kind of growth is translating into big money. Samsung increased its profits by 82% to a record 5.05 trillion in the first quarter of the year.

According to IDC senior research analyst Ramon Llamas, “Apple launched its popular iPhone 4S in additional key markets, most notably in China, and Samsung experienced continued success from its Galaxy Note smartphone/tablet and other Galaxy smartphones. With other companies in the midst of major strategic transitions, the contest between Apple and Samsung will bear close observation as hotly-anticipated new models are launched.”

  • What's The Big Deal with Samsung S3
Posted on April 25, 2012 by Pure Mobile

    By: Aldo Panessidi

Despite all the rumors and marketing fanfare being build in anticipation of Samsung's much-awaited Galaxy S3... we are starting to see indications that this new smartphone may simply be a mirror image of its predecessor the Galaxy S3 with very minor updates. In fact, there is mounting murmurs that these inconsequential updates may not even warrant the title of the Samsung Galaxy S3.

    Samsung Galaxy S3

CNET says that one of those infamous “anonymous” sources described the difference between the S3 and the S2 as the same level of improvement that the iPhone 4S brought to the iPhone 4. As such, will the consumer's enthusiasm for the Galaxy S3 turn to disappointment when they realize that the only updates may be a boost in processing power coupled with a new, borderline useful interaction feature, but not the big deal that Samsung marketing is gearing the market for.

Regardless, leaving your valuable mobile devices unprotected is risky! Discover the latest innovative protection solutions... stylish top brand bags, sleeves and cases specifically designed to protect your devices from scratches and blemishes. Tough on the outside, sweet on the inside these brand name protection accessories combine complete device coverage with sleek artistic expression.

Moreover, it would seem that Samsung' s Galaxy S3 specs are very similar to the HTC One X smartphone - this would probably mean that the feature wise, the Galaxy S3 would have a quad-core CPU (probably an Exynos rather than Tegra), 1GB of RAM and a 4.7" screen. Leaked images of the S3 do confirm a bigger screen than the current Galaxy S2 4.3" screen.

One of the new features of the Samsung Galaxy S3 is apparently being dubbed the “ Human Interaction”... which uses the device’s front-facing camera to keep track of where the user’s eyes are pointed. it automatically locks the screen to the image when user's look away.

We’ll have to wait until Samsung’s May 3rd event, during which time they should be announcing the details for the Galaxy S3. Until then, we can just keep speculating.

  • This little hack will let you get the most out of your One X battery

    By Adhurim Murtezai

Word on the street about the HTC One X from both users and critics is generally positive. However, there is one complaint that is pretty prevalent: battery life. Ever heard that before?

    HTC One X

Discover an extensive selection of the latest lithium technology replacement cell phone and wireless devices batteries. Ensure your device is powered by brand name batteries for longer operating life

Well, it looks like we don’t have to just wallow in acceptance of this all-to-typical problem. There appears to be a solution:

A developer on xda-developers forum has concluded that the poor battery life is due to an issue with the Nvidia Tegra 3 power management controls. The power control app, NvCPLSvc.apk, is in the wrong place. It has been placed in the system/bin folder instead of the system/app folder.

    HTC One X Battery Hack

SD Flash Memory cards provide added security and extend your mobile device memory to hold a huge inventory of images, songs and documents

The fix is easy. Move the power control app into the system/app folder and watch battery life improve by 10-20 percent.

    Duh!

There’s a rumor- spotlight shining on a different area of technology redesign right now – materials used for device cases. Reports have it that Apple has a new “Liquidmetal” alloy for its next iPhone 5, and Samsung is working on a ceramic main body for its upcoming Samsung Galaxy III S smartphone.

Apple is reported to be replacing the current iPhone’s glass case with a Liquidmetal alloy that will make the case both thinner and lighter. Liquidmetal is also supposed to significantly improve the case’s durability.

It seems Apple has had this change in the works for awhile. Back in 2010, Apple acquired the rights to the “amorphous metal alloys” that Liquidmetal Technologies had developed. Not long after that, Apple was looking for engineers to work with the material.

We should have confirmation on whether an iPhone case made out of Liquidmetal will be in our hands soon. According to South Korea’s ETNews, one of their sources reported that the next iPhone should be unveiled in June at the Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco.

The South Korean news site also announced that the Samsung Galaxy S III smartphone will feature a ceramic main body, giving that phone a lighter weight and more comfortable grip. The ceramic material is manufactured with a new method for applying heat to a non-metallic inorganic substance. The Galaxy S III is scheduled to be unveiled in London on May 3rd.

  • Is a Droid RAZR HD On Its Way?
Posted on April 24, 2012 by Pure Mobile

Motorola RAZR HDA series of images uploaded by a software engineer and program manager with Motorola Mobility show what looks to be a DROID RAZR with HD design. The pictures show EXIF data specs for a “DROID RAZR HD“ handset that runs Android 4.0.3 and has a camera equipped with a f/2.4 aperture camera.

Now the question becomes, is the DROID RAZR HD really the DROID Fighter that is expected soon on Verizon Wireless shelves? The leaked specs for a DROID RAZR HD come on the heels of an image of what is believed to be the DROID Fighter, an image that surfaced on a Chinese blog forum in March.

RAZR HD specsIf the rumors are true, one of the most exciting features about this phone is the battery. The device is said to be equipped with the same monstrous 3,300 mAh battery used by the RAZR MAXX. This design may also be the appearance of the Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich.

Get powered up for work, life and play easily and conveniently with desktop chargers, wall chargers and car chargers. Get all the power and energy you need for the mobile lifestyle.

The image don’t show Android navigation buttons found on earlier RAZR models, so this may indicate that the handset uses the on-screen buttons found in the Ice Cream Sandwich. Add on a 4.6-inch high-definition display, and this phone is sweet.
