Moshi for iPad

  • Despite an international ban to the contrary, US President Barack Obama has decided to veto a ban on certain Apple products in the United States stemming from the drawn out patent battle between the California-based company and Samsung. This has had a very negative effect on Samsung's value internationally, with their share values dropping from $169.3 Billion to $168.5 Billion, a loss of over $1 Billion.

This is all as a result of an International Trade Commission imposed ban on US imports of certain Apple products, and the vetoing of this ruling by the White House over the weekend. This ruling originally came down in June of this year after Samsung won a patent battle with Apple ruling that certain products, the iPhone 4 for example, violated patents held by Samsung. The veto of this ruling was the first of its kind by a US President since 1987.

What could further complicate this mess is the fact a ruling is expected soon on whether or not Samsung had violated patents held by Apple, resulting in potential US import bans on certain older models of Samsung devices like the Samsung Galaxy SII and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. This decision is expected to be made later this week.

What does this mean for consumers? Not surprisingly, this political and commercial theatre will equate to just about nothing in terms of value for consumers. At the end of the day, companies like Samsung and Apple likely won't change their practices much in the wake of the veto. In the grand scheme of things, this could have a negative effects between the US government and Samsung and their home country of South Korea, who won't look fondly on the US vetoing a major victory for Samsung with just the stroke of a pen. As always, the big winner in this will be lawyers, who are certain to be promised plenty of paperwork as these decisions are appealed and analyzed.

  • The cold case of what Apple has been up to has possibly been cracked. Photos, shown above and leaked over the weekend, appear to show what could be the next new phone from Apple. Branded with the name "iPhone 5C", and knowledge that Apple's next phone is supposedly low budget, will prompt jokes of the iPhone 5Cheap, but we have reason to believe that the C will in fact stand for something else.

The C in iPhone 5C could stand for colour. It is believed that the new iPhone, which will be a budget phone in terms of hardware, will borrow from the iPhone line and introduce a wide range of colours in terms of casing. The phone itself is expected to come in at a mid-tier price despite its potentially low grade hardware, making it appear that the apple won't fall too far from the tree.

As for a launch window, nothing is set in stone. It is expected to launch side-by-side with Apple's new flagship phone, whether that be the iPhone 5S or iPhone 6. That timing hasn't exactly been nailed down, but some say it could be as early as September. The iPhone 5S or 6 is expected to be something more akin to what we are used to with Apple, a new top of the line smartphone that is sure to shake up the mobile landscape. In terms of what the 5C is expected to be, think BlackBerry Q5. A clearly inferior, yet more financially palatable version of the BlackBerry Q10. Apple has been experiencing sales issues over the past year and a surge in competition from brands like Samsung and HTC, making their status as the top phone somewhat cloudy. With a new line of phones, including a variety of options, it wouldn't be surprising to see Apple propel itself far above the competition with its new phones.

  • Another day, another shot fired between the boats of Apple and Samsung, and this time it's in favour of the Galaxy S3 and S4 maker. Last week it was announced that Samsung had surpassed Apple in terms of profitability, becoming the most profitable phone maker in the world. This means the end of Apple's four year reign at the top, beginning with the rise of the iPhone. Samsung now has its own powerhouse in the Samsung Galaxy S3, and the recently released Samsung Galaxy S4. But how exactly did they, being Samsung, do it?

It came down to last quarter. Apple posted $4.6 Billion in profit in the second quarter this. A handsome chunk of change for sure. Samsung managed to top that though, bringing in $5.6 Billion dollars in profit in the second quarter. The recipe to their success? strong volumes, high wholesale prices, and tight cost controls. Those factors combined pushed Samsung into the mobile profits lead, knocking the giant, apple, out of top spot for the first time in 4 years. But why did Apple sink? Apple has failed to deliver a wide variety of phones at lower price points, something they are now under a tremendous amount of pressure to do.

So what's next? Well, Samsung is here to stay. While a lot of this has to do with Apple falling, Samsung has also risen up to take control of their share of the market. With that being said, I believe Apple is just one announcement away from regaining their post at the top. Why? Because no matter what Samsung does it will never be as cool as Apple. Plain and simple. The only problem with Apple right now is that they have gone too long between devices, but people will forget that when they roll out their next iPhone or iPhones later this year.

  • Apple, the maker of the iPod, iPad, and iPhone, has been found guilty of conspiring with major book publishers to artificially raise e-book prices. A court in New York City passed down this ruling last week saying that the electronics giant worked with six major publishers to raise prices when it broke into the e-book industry in 2010. The victim of this price fixing? Consumers who had to bear the brunt of the cost, and Amazon, who through pressure from publishers, were forced to raise prices from their original $9.99 price point.

While Apple was found guilty, the court says that Apple worked hand in hand with publishers to bring an end to the $9.99 e-book, specifically targeting Amazon and its customers. This cooperation led to Amazon being forced to raise its prices and leave customers wondering why their e-books were rising in price inexplicably.

Apple has of course denied that they took part in any wrongdoing, and insist that they in fact brought innovation to the e-book market with the iPad and the iBookstore. To this day the e-book market is still dominated by Amazon, and it's device, the Kindle.

The plan was to unfold as such. Essentially, Apple struck something called "agency agreements" with the major publishers. Once these agreements were in place, they effectively legitimized the raising the prices. The next step in the plan consisted of the publishers going to Amazon with a take it or leave it agreement. Lost in all of this is the fact Amazon actually sells e-books at a loss, as they are in fact trying to establish the e-book as the premier method of obtaining the written word. Something big book publishers did not like.

Ultimately Apple chose to go to court, while five of the major publishers settled out of court. Further court hearings are scheduled to decide damages, but appeals are expected to slow down the process dramatically.

  • iphone 5s accessories leaked pics news rumors

The biggest story these days on the mobile technology front has got to be the news and speculation surrounding Apple's upcoming iPhone 5S. And Pure Mobile's been keeping up with all the talk.

Here, we're rounding up the most important news, leaks and speculation, from iPhone 5S accessories to leaked pics and a prospected release date. Read on to get the scoop on what to expect from the next iteration of the iPhone, with details about hardware, software and gadgets and accessories.

Though recent speculation from the likes of International Digital Times hints that the upcoming iPhone 5S may only hit the market at the end of August or in early September, some accessories makers already seem to be gearing up for it.

Spigen iPhone 5S accessories teaser Promotional mage from Spigen teasing its upcoming iPhone 5S accessories

While accessories maker Spigen is already encouraging its website visitors to "stay up to date on the iPhone 5S case and screen protector collection as it arrives," they're apparently not the only company already at work on iPhone 5S accessories.

Meanwhile, as Phones Review reported, accessories maker Zagg has already started promoting their line of iPhone 5S screen protectors. Though as the Phones Review article notes, without a confirmed release date for the iPhone 5S, Zagg may be "jumping the gun a little."

But enough about the accessories. What about the device itself? Well, June 24, most leading tech sites were running headlines about some leaked pictures of what may be an iPhone 5S prototype. In particular, the image of what is supposedly the backend of the new iPhone has been making the rounds.

Shown next to an iPhone 5, the picture reveals that the prototype boasts an A7 chip and, in the words of one Gizmodo writer "pack a new model number."

BGR says the differences seen between the two iPhone models in the leaked image point to "an extensive internal overhaul." Moreover, there's been speculation that the iPhone 5S will include a fingerprint scanner. And yet another leaked picture shows a dual-LED flash with two different colored LED lights next to the camera.

Though these newly leaked images are certainly the biggest revelations we've had yet concerning the iPhone 5S, they may not be enough to truly satisfy those eagerly anticipating the arrival of the newest iPhone.

But you can be sure that Pure Mobile will be closely following all the developments and news. And we'll be keeping you up to date on any word about iPhone 5S accessories, specs, or conclusive release date.

  • Griffin Survivor Waterproof new iPhone 5 accessories

At Pure Mobile, we sure do love new iPhone 5 accessories, especially when they give us something we haven't seen before. So it's only natural that we put the spotlight today on the new arrival at our shop of Griffin's latest, the Survivor Waterproof iPhone 5 Case.

Not too long ago, a waterproof iPhone 5 case seemed like a novel concept with only one or two big names working on such a design. of course, there's LifeProof, as well as OtterBox's recently released Armor series. But that led us to wonder why Griffin was so long absent from this new accessory category.

So well known for heavy-duty iPhone 5 accessories made for extreme conditions, Griffin ought to have a waterproof iPhone case of its own. And now, with the Survivor waterproof, a collaboration with accessories maker Catalyst, we've finally got it.

Griffin Survivor Waterproof iPhone 5 Case in Black

The Survivor + Catalyst iPhone 5 case is designed and tested to be completely waterproof up to 3 metres (or 9.8 feet). So, water won't get in the way of taking pictures or video, or anything else you use your phone for.

Meanwhile, the same rugged protection you get from Griffin's standard Survivor model is right there in this waterproof case as well. Having consulted the U.S. Department of Defense's Mil-Std 810-G to design their testing protocols, this waterproof case also keeps your phone protected from drops, shocks and vibrations.

But as a latecomer to the waterproof iPhone case market, it's a good thing that Griffin has yet another card up its sleeve.

Unlike LifeProof's Fre case (which, by the way, is actually pretty awesome) the Survivor + Catalyst case doesn't actually need to be screwed or unscrewed to be attached or removed. Instead, it uses compression latches to secure the case, making waterproofing your phone as easy as changing into a swimsuit. In fact, Griffin even claims that it's the most easy-fitting waterproof iPhone 5 case availalble.

As we said, we love casting the spotlight on new iPhone 5 accessories at Pure Mobile. And with a carrying case as functional, protective and cleverly designed as Griffin's Survivor waterproof iPhone 5 case, the task is even more fun.

  • BikeSPike GPS Bicycle Tracker iPhone 5 Accessory

From carrying cases to toys and gadgets, cool new iPhone 5 accessories are cropping up all the time. But a new Kickstarter project offers up something totally unique, with a GPS system that'll protect your ride. And for cyclists, there can be no doubt that the BikeSpike will be this summer's absolute most important iPhone 5 accessory.

The new gadget works primarily as a GPS tracker, thanks to a native app that works for iOS as well as Android.

Just attach the BikeSpike to your bike and you'll be able to digitally "lock" your bicycle in a geo-fenced location. If it moves, or if someone even tries tampering with it, you'll get a notification on your phone.

And if a thief does manage to get their hands on it, you'll be able to track its location on map, even granting temporary access to law enforcement so they can recover it more quickly.

So far, it's among the best accessories for iPhone 5 or Android designed specifically for cyclists. And it may just become as important to standard bike security as your typical bike lock. And parents will love the safety of being able to monitor their kids when they ride outside of a designated "safe zone."

But there's a lot more to love about this awesome accessory than anti-theft protection and kid safety.

BikeSpike iPhone 5 Accessory GPS and Stats App

That's because the BikeSpike also works as a performance monitoring tool, logging your distance, speed and calories burned and even keeping track of inclines and routes taken. You can then share your stats to friends by phone.

Plus, if you happen to get in an accident, BikeSpike's collision detection system "can alert key members of your contact list and share the location of an accident."

At PureMobile, we're always on the lookout for the coolest new iPhone 5 accessories. And for anyone who enjoys biking during the summer, the BikeSpike is probably the single most worthwhile iPhone 5 accessory that ever rode on two wheels. Check out the BikeSpike team on Kickstarter or take a look at the video below. (It's pretty funny, actually.)
