While RIM wrestles with marrying its BlackBerry Playbook with Google’s Android operating system and Apple’s iOS, one Dutch developer (named “Gamer109X”) decided to find out if a third option would work. He installed Microsoft’s Windows Phone OS onto RIM’s BlackBerry PlayBook.

Discover the latest innovative protection solutions... stylish top brand bags, sleeves as well as  cases and skins specifically designed to protect your devices from scratches and blemishes.  Tough on the outside, sweet on the inside these brand name protection accessories combine complete device coverage with sleek artistic expression.

Surprisingly, the result is a tablet that seems pretty responsive. For those curious to know what a Windows Phone tablet might look like, watch  the following  video of the developer’s PlayBook running Microsoft’s Window Phone OS. Gamer109X said he plans to release his own Windows Phone build for the PlayBook to the public in the coming months.

Take your devices to new level, enhance your mobility and turn your device into a power tool!  Discover select accessories such as; stylus & pens, micro SD memory cards, batteries, docking stations, Bluetooth headsets, data cables and XMI Speakers all specifically designed to make your devices functionally efficient and performance rich.

If you believe Microsoft’s last position on the tablets, they have no interest in bringing Windows Phone to tablets. That position might be irrelevant once Microsoft’s Windows 8 platform is released. If you think about it, there is no reason to put Windows Phone on a tablet, but Windows 8...

One of the biggest problems users have with choosing an Android phone over another platform is figuring out which OS is going to give the best performance with which type of phone. A number of companies, including OpenSignalMaps, have been trying to quantify the problem by analyzing the amount of fragmentation in the market.

Android Fragmentation Issues Can you name the 4,000 devices that run on Android?

Using data from 681,900 devices that downloaded OpenSignalMaps software over the past six months, they found 3,997 distinct Android devices running its app. This is a great chart showing the spread:

Each rectangle represents a unique Android device. The big green rectangle in the upper left is the Samsung Galaxy S II - by far the most popular Android   phone in the study.

Leaving your valuable mobile devices unprotected is risky!  Discover the latest innovative cell phone accessories that protect your smartphones from the hustle and bustle of everyday life... stylish cell phone cases and cell phone covers and skins from top brands like iSkin, Incipio, Puregear, Griffin, Moshi, Incase, Otterbox and Powermat all specifically designed to protect your devices from scratches and blemishes.

This shows an incredible number of Android version/display resolution combinations. Analysts at OpenSignalMaps predict that number will continue to grow.  Their report states:  “Android has shown commitment to make it easier to target multiple screen sizes – by introducing the (perhaps ironically named) fragments APIs in 2011 which makes it easier to turn view elements into modules.”

OpenSignalMaps also took a look at the version of Android each device was running:

Android Fragmentation Issues Can you name the 4,000 devices that run on Android?

More than half of all Android phones are still running version 2.3 Gingerbread, and Gingerbread is all of 18 months old. The newest version of Android, Ice Cream Sandwich, barely shows on the chart.

Since Google’s Android is free and open for use by any hardware manufacturer, there are thousands of different devices running the OS. “Android fragmentation” is the term given to the spread of different versions of the Android OS across all devices.

So what does this mean? It’s a really good situation if you want more choice in your hardware. But it's really bad if you want timely software updates or a guarantee the latest and greatest apps will work on your device.

The OpenSignalMaps report concluded that the benefits of building apps for Android far outweigh the drawbacks. ”One of the joys of developing for Android is you have no idea who’ll end up using your app. With many devices under $100 unsubsidized, Android phones and tablets are able to reach a market that can’t afford netbooks. For the majority of the world’s population smartphones (and not computers) will be the must-have devices.”

In case you were wondering where Apple fits in, they don’t have this problem. iOS only runs on one phone, the iPhone, and the latest version still supports the three-year-old iPhone 3GS. Microsoft is following the Apple model somewhat. They require Windows Phone manufacturers meet strict requirements to guarantee that updates go through to all devices in a timely fashion.

Developer Michael DeGusta created the visualization of what he called Android’s fragmented update history. He wrote, “Ever since the iPhone turned every smartphone into a blank slate, the value of a phone is largely derived from the software it can run and how well the phone can run it. When you’re making a 2 year commitment to a device, it’d be nice to have some way to tell if the software was going to be remotely current in a year or, heck, even a month.”

Back in January of this year, market research firm Deloitte estimated that 2012 will see entry-level smartphones become more popular with the number of sub-$100 smartphones in use globally will surpass 500 million this year, and by the end of 2012 there will be 200 million NFC-equipped devices in the hands of consumers.  Moreover, it also maintained that it sees apps continuing to play a huge role in the mobile market, with the number of available apps set to top 2 million later this year.

Almost three-quarters of consumers spend nothing on apps

More recently, a survey conducted by ABI Research reported that more than 70% of app users spend little to nothing on apps, while the highest 3% of all spenders account for nearly 20% of the total amount spent.

While nearly two-thirds of consumers in the United States have spent money on mobile applications on at least one occasion, the total amount being spent isn’t much.  ABI senior analyst Aapo Markkanen stated, “The median amount among the consumers who spend money on apps is much lower than the average, just $7.50 per month. This reflects the disproportionate role of big spenders as a revenue source.”

ABI also found that the most successful money-making apps are utility apps used for business purposes and iOS games that utilize in-app purchases. In each case, purchases are made by a very small number of customers.

It looks like Apple is making some adjustments to its current product inventories in preparation for the upcoming launch of the 6thgeneration iPhone.

Apple adjusting iPhone inventory in preparation For new product launch
According to Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu in a note to investors, Apple has reduced iPhone orders by between 20% to 25% from the 35.1 million units the company shipped in the first quarter of this year. Wu now expects shipments of between 26 million and 28 million. With the estimated 8.6 million iPhones already in the pipeline, Apple will have an iPhone supply of between four and six weeks in inventory.

Leaving your valuable Apple iPhone 4S and iPad 3 devices unprotected is risky!  Discover the latest innovative protection solutions... stylish top brand bags and sleeves for your iPad3 from top brands Be.ez, Incase, and Targus.

According to Wu, “From our understanding, the reason for the reduction is not demand related but rather due to the upcoming 6th generation iPhone refresh likely in the September-October timeframe. It appears that APPLE is opting to be conservative with its suppliers to factor in a potential 2-quarter pause ahead of the refresh and also to manage inventory. We believe this helps explain why its June quarter guidance was somewhat more conservative.”

Apple adjusting iPhone inventory in preparation For new product launch

Wu also explained developments on the iPad front. He reported that Apple is finally increasing their new iPad build plans. Shipments of the device were previously held back due to the supply of its new Retina Display, and the situation has been “greatly improved with an additional supplier.” Wu believes that this will help Apple to better meet strong demand for its iPad3.

For the June quarter, Wu reduced his iPhone forecast from 28 million units to 27 million, and raised iPad shipment expectations from 14 million to 15 million units. Due to improved iPad profitability, Wu increased his gross margin assumption from 42.5% to 43.5% and forecasted $36.1 billion in revenue and $10.16 in EPS. He’s keeping his Buy rating on shares of Apple stock, as well as his $780 price target.

Verizon’s U.S. customers apparently will be getting a dual-core Snapdragon S4 powering their Galaxy S3 devices and not the quad-core Exynos variant that was expected.

Protect your Galaxy S3 form the hustle and bustle of everyday life with the latest Samsung Galaxy S3  accessories.

    Verizon’s Galaxy S 3 Will Settle for the Dual-Core Snapdragon S4

This news is confirmed by early NenaMark2 benchmarks, which show a Galaxy S3 (SCH-I535) with a 1.5GHz dual-core S4. It looks like the reason for the hardware exchange is the LTE capability, which the Exynos 4 Quad chipset doesn't have.

The benchmark also shows the Adreno 225 GPU in the Snapdragon S4 beats the Mali-400MP in the Exynos Quad by a couple of frames. This could be attributed to the pre-release software or inconsistency in the NenaMark2 benchmark. The Galaxy S3 screen is capped at 60FPS, so results close to that point may not be spot on.

During the Consumer Electronics Show, Samsung announced that the company was working on merging its Bada mobile operating system with the open-source Tizen operating system.

Android Apps Backed by Tizen OS Run on Samsung

Samsung is currently the second-largest cellphone maker in the world, with devices powered by four major operating systems. By focusing on its own operating system, Samsung has more control over its devices and a greater opportunity to differentiate its products from its competitors. By merging the two operating systems, Samsung is hoping that existing Bada developers will transition to Tizen.

Protect your Galaxy S3 and Galaxy Tab form the hustle and bustle of everyday life with the latest Samsung Galaxy S3  accessories and Samsung Galaxy Tab accessories

While still in development, the Tizen operating system is open-source and backed by Intel and the Linux Foundation. When the Bada integration is complete, Tizen will support programs written with Samsung’s Bada SDK, including both new and previously published apps.

Tizen, according to reports, features a program called Application Compatibility Layer (ACL), which enables the device to run applications built using different code. ACL is similar to RIM’s Android player for its BlackBerry PlayBook.

A new video has been released that demonstrates the Samsung/Intel-backed Tizen OS running Android apps.

Open Mobile, the company behind ACL, claims Android apps will be able to run on a Tizen-powered device with 100% compatibility, and stated that ACL features the same level of responsiveness users would expect on a device that runs on Android OS. The company would also like to make sure that the ACL will be integrated into smartphones and tablets by vendors and not end users.

As usual, there probably will be a few bugs to be worked out in the field, but all indicators are that Tizen is a well-designed and truly open source alternative to Google's Android.

    Samsung Galaxy S3

The Samsung Galaxy S III has been the center of attention in the mobile phone blogosphere the past couple weeks. Leaks and rumors have been dropping left and right.  We comment on the more recent rumors surrounding everything related to the Samsung Galaxy S III.

Quad-core processor: The Korea Times reports the Galaxy S III will feature a quad-core processor.

An anonymous Samsung executive has revealed a bit of news about the upcoming Galaxy S III’s Exynos chip. It comes as no surprise that the Korean manufacturer is using its own chipset for the flagship device. It has for past iterations, and this is what we were expecting.   LTE fans that demand Exynos will be happy to see a reaffirmation from Samsung  that it is gaining LTE-capabilities.

This is a major issue, especially within the US market place... wherein consumers,  have grown fond of the Exynos processors’ performance.   However, in the breadth, Samsung has indicated the need to use Qualcomm processors in order for their devices to be optimized for the LTE networks.

The final whisper seem to allude that the new chipset is said to be a 32 nm silicon A9 quad-core processor, meaning that rumors of it being the Exynos 4412 are probably correct.

Our Take: The way we see it, Samsung has two choices for the Galaxy S III. They either go with the Exynos 4412 (quad-core Cortex-A9) or the Exynos 5250 (dual-core Cortex-A15).   Most people thought the new iPad would be quad-core CPU and they were wrong, and I think Samsung's final CPU choice could also surprise people.

Probability: deploying the Exynos 4412 CPU - 75%... deploying the exynos 5250 CPU - 25%

Leaving your valuable mobile devices unprotected is risky!  Discover the latest innovative protection solutions... stylish top brand bags, sleeves and cases specifically designed to protect your devices from scratches and blemishes.  Tough on the outside, sweet on the inside these brand name protection accessories combine complete device coverage with sleek artistic expression.

Integrated LTE: The Korea Times and other blogs report the Galaxy S III will feature a processor with an integrated LTE modem.

Our Take: Samsung does not integrate modems with their system-on-a-chip (SoC) like Qualcomm does. We have no doubt the Galaxy S III will be LTE-capable and use a Samsung LTE modem - just like the Verizon Galaxy Nexus, but it will not be integrated into the SoC.  Maybe the Exynos 6 series will have integrated LTE, but you will not find it on Exynos 4 chips or Exynos 5250.

Probability:  We view this as a high improbability as such we award a less that 2% possibility

Enhance your mobility and turn your device into a power tool!  Discover select accessories such as; stylus & pens, micro SD memory cards, batteries, docking stations, Bluetooth headsets, data cables and glider gloves all specifically designed to make your devices functionally efficient and performance rich.

June release: Numerous blogs are speculating the Galaxy S III will launch in June.

Our Take: Previous reports said the Galaxy S III would launch in April, then May, and now the latest guess is June. Samsung previously said the successor to the Galaxy S II would be unveiled at “separate Samsung-hosted event in the first half of the year, closer to commercial availability of the product.” While we have no idea when the Samsung Galaxy S III will be releases , we are pretty confident to see the launch in June 2012

Probability: We have been hearing the same rumors - we rate this as 90% truth factor

Get powered up for work, life and play easily and conveniently with the latest  collection of desktop chargers, wall chargers and car chargers.   Get all the power and energy you need for the mobile lifestyle.

Wireless charging from 1-2 meters away: Korean site Daily reports the Galaxy S III will feature wireless charging that works with a dock from 1-2 meters away.

Our Take: Several current phones already feature wireless charging, so it wouldn’t be a surprise to see as part of the Galaxy S III feature list. I find it really hard to believe it would work from 1-2 meters (3-6ft!) away though. The current inductive charging standard Qi only works when the charging receptacle is almost touching the device.

Qualcomm was working on a propriety technology called WiPowerthat increased the distance between the transmitter and receiver coils by a couple of inches, but the charge had to be transferred though another material like plastic or wood. They previewed this technology at CES 2011, but it never came to market. I heard reports from the Qi group that there were concerns of electro-magnetic radiation when the transmitter and receiver coils are not close together.

I’d be surprised if Samsung solved this radiation problem when Qualcomm couldn’t, and I still have my doubts of this remote charging feature.  It would be awesome if they discovered a safe way to do this, but I don’t see it happening this soon.

Probability: We award this slim 10% possibility

Today Apple can seemingly do no wrong. But if you think back a couple of years, you will likely recall the fuss made around the iPhone4 and the unheard of design flaw that had jaws flapping. Honestly, it had been ages since the incident had crossed my mind. And unfortunately for Apple, Antennagate has reared its ugly head once again.

iPhone 4 Can`t Touch This - Design Flaw - Dropped Calls

The silver lining for the tech darling is that this time the reminder comes in the form of a bookend on the class-action lawsuit that had been levied against Apple after the 2010 iPhone 4 release that caused some serious problems for customers trying to actually use their iPhones to speak with others. Some users noticed that when the strip along the side of the handset was covered it would result in a loss of signal and eventually a dropped call.

Enhance your mobility and turn your device into a power tool!  Discover select accessories such as; stylus & pens, micro SD memory cards, batteries, docking stations, Bluetooth headsets, data cables and glider gloves all specifically designed to make your devices functionally efficient and performance rich.

To stem the tide of a disgruntled public, Apple offered free Bumper cases for iPhone4 buyers. Alas, they were only available through September 30, 2010 which did not appease those who had waited in line and paid a premium for the long-awaited iPhone4 – hence, the multiple lawsuits filed against Apple.

So those iPhone customers who felt cheated because of the time limit on free bumper cases will be pleased to hear that the class-action lawsuit against Apple translates into either a free Bumper case or $15 cash to iPhone4 customers in the United States. Personally, my iPhone4 is already enshrined in the protective case of my choosing. But, the $15 cash is a great incentive to buy the new running accessories or headset I’ve had my eye on.

To claim the reward of your choice, visit www.iPhone4Settlement.com (it is not yet up and running). The website will provide information on how customers can receive their free case or get the cash in hand. In case you forget, Apple will be required to send reminder emails to iPhone4 users prior to April 30th.

Thankfully this design flaw was addressed with the iPhone 4S and the tech company continues to bring its signature innovation and style to consumers with products like the iPad that have made it the success story to date and an industry leader, not a follower.

With LG’s Optimus Vu and Samsung’s Galaxy Note launching  this year two concerns come to mind:

    1. With a device this size having these specs... is it a smartphone or is it a tablet or is it a little bit  of both - to coin a new phrase smartabletphone
    2. Do they really expect customers to hold this handset (overall dimensions of the Vu are 139.6 x 90.4 x 8.5mm) to speak on the phone for any length of time? At least the latter bodes well for Bluetooth headsets.

    LG Optimus Vu

In addition to being a “multimedia lover’s dream device” - the phone features a 5-inch 1024 x 768 IPS display, a 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm processor, an 8-megapixel camera, and will support LTE. What's new is the storage capacity — the phone will come with 32GB of storage — and the full dimensions. The phone measures in at 5.49 inches by 3.55 inches, making it wider than the already substantially-sized Galaxy Note, but thinner at just 0.33 inches thick (8.5mm). Taking another cue from the Note's playbook, the Vu introduces the 'rubberidium' stylus pen as well.

As an alternative to the Galaxy Note, we are looking forward to seeing the product launch. In its press release, LG stated the Optimus Vu “boasts unmatched productivity. Its unique built-in QuickClip hotkey allows users to conveniently capture screenshots and memos with a single push. Jotting notes is also possible with a finger or with the dedicated Rubberdium pen”.

While this Android newcomer will initially come with OS 2.3 Gingerbread, an Ice Cream Sandwich update is en route. Also, before giving us a peek of this handset at the Mobile World Congress LG confirmed that the Vu will be available at Korea’s SK Telecom carrier in early March. As an LTE-enabled device, this could very well be seen in Canada later this year, but there have been no details around carrier availability or if the handset will be available unlocked.

Keep reading and we will keep you posted!
