Company Description
Sony Ericsson is a joint venture between the Japanese consumer electronics company Sony Corporation and the Swedish telecommunications company Ericsson for the manufacturing of GSM cell phones. It was established in 2001.
Sony Ericsson combines Sony’s global consumer marketing expertise and Ericsson’s expertise in technology and communications. The first products of Sony Ericsson were launched in March 2002. Its W-series GSM phones were the first cell phones to feature music-media supporting technology. Cell phones with music-playing capabilities became the rage after this and other mobile phone manufacturers came out with their own respective range of such phones.
Sony Ericsson is among the leading producers of mobile multimedia consumer products. Its wide range includes feature-rich cell phones and accessories, PC phone cards and M2M solutions. The products are based on the powerful mobile imaging technology. The company is popular for its innovative ways of employing multimedia communications in the mobile handsets.
In the July 2006 issue of the Swedish magazine M3, Sony Ericsson was rated as the highest selling Nordic phone brand. According to Gartner, an IT research-consulting firm, Sony Ericsson is the largest manufacturer of GSM cell phones in the world, and in the third quarter of 2006, held an 8% global market share.
