  • Sony Ericcson is pushing very hard to get their new Android devices that will be coming out this year in front of the eyes of the public. A number of other devices have already been announced, including the Arc, U5a Vivaz pro, unlocked Xperia X10 and the Neo looks like another solid addition to that line. The device will be powered by the already highly popular Android 3.3 Gingerbread operating system.

This is the first time that the device has been shown to the public. There was not word on when customers could expect the device to be released, and the advertisement was only seen along side a “coming soon” warning. So far there isn’t even any information about which carrier the device will be available on. Alongside the device in the advertisement, a few specs and facts about the device were made available. First of all, it will utilize their new CMOS sensor, which allows for users to take great video and pictures, even when they are in very low lighting. It will also feature their Reality display on the BRAVIA Engline,a nd will have a built in HDMI port, which has been a hot commodity for smart devices in recent weeks and months.

The Neo will have a 3.7 inch display, along with a hearty eight megapixel camera that will be able to capture up to 720p video in HD. The standard 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor was used in the device. Although not all of the information about the device is available at this current juncture, the site did make it clear that it will be available in three colors; white, blue, and red. It will be interesting to see how well received the device is moving forward and also what carrier it will be available on straight out of the gate. IT is possible that it could be rebranded and be available on a number of different carriers, but there is no information to support that at this time.

  • AT&T Connects To Amazon App Store
Posted on March 27, 2011 by Pure Mobile

With the company behind the ultra popular Angry Birds releasing an Amazon App Store for unlocked cell phone exclusive new update for the game, AT&T is looking to enable purchases through the app store as well. This would be the first time that they have budged from only allowing users to download things from their own app store. AT&T has never previously allowed anything like this, and this should serve as a small shift in strategy for the company. They will be allowing their branded Android devices to have access to the Amazon App Store for the first time in the history of the company.

AT&T released a statement saying that they were looking to allow users to access third party app stores, but also said that they were going to have to finish the agreements with Amazon first, and promised to share more information with their users at some point in the near future.

Hopefully Angry Birds Rio, and other apps that are exclusively offered through the Amazon App Store will make their way to AT&T branded Android devices here soon. The announcement came as a bit of a surprise because AT&T has been mostly steadfast in their strategies prior to this, and this serves as a big change in the way that they do business.

In order for this to happen there will likely have to be some sort of widespread update to the firmware, but the company has not confirmed this at this time. Could this be the first step in opening up the door for third party app stores in the future. They do already exist but have not been able to maintain much leverage with most carriers not allowing direct access to them. Hopefully this is the start of a change in the way that business is done within AT&T moving forward.

  • Logitech was recently seen hiring Android developers for what they described as a ground breaking upcoming release. While it is not currently clear whether or not this is the groundbreaking release they referenced, the company is releasing a new Squeezebox app for Android users such as unlocked Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, LG Eve GW620, etc  that will allow users to remotely control their Squeezebox. The app will utilizes a Wi-Fi connection and will allow users to use all of the usual controls that were not previously available in remote format.

The app will also utilize the album artwork for whatever music you are playing at the current time. It will be interesting to see if htis is the groundbreaking release that they previously referenced. The app will only be available for Android 2.1 or later. The app will reportedly work with the Squeezebox Touch, Squeezebox Boom and Squeezebox Duet.

The app is already available in the market, and more details can be found on the Logitech website, outlining all of the different uses that are included in the application. A full description is available there as well. It is good to see Logitech releasing applications for the Squeezebox which is a device that has received a lot of press over the course of the last few months, and many users were eagerly awaiting the release of an official remote app, since the device primarily works as an end-table music provider.

Now Logitech fans can start speculating about the hiring of the android developers. The description of the job on their website seemed to suggest a much larger project than a simple remote app, but the company has not had many releases within the Android market so this could be the project that they were referencing after all. Logitech will probably not publicly address the issue, especially if this is not the project that they were referencing.

  • Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc Review
Posted on March 15, 2011 by Pure Mobile

Sony Ericsson has announced a number of devices that have been highly anticipated since the original announcements. The unlocked Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc is one that has received a lot of attention since it was first announced but has not received quite as much attention as the XPERIA Play that was announced just over a year ago. The design of the Arc is very sleek - if you were to describe it in one word. It features an inward curvature that is meant to mimic the shape of the human hand. It is very comfortable to hold for long periods of time. The width of the phone is just 8.7 millimeters.

The front keys on the phone are physical and are not touch screen, which has produced some problems with phones in the past. This makes it easy to hit them without having to physically look at the phone, which was a problem with the X10 and Vivaz U8a unlocked, which were previously released.

The phone will not have any kind of video calling functionality, despite the fact that it was included in Google’s Android 2.3, which is the software that the phone is running. Although this is not a huge feature lack, it could keep some users from going with the Arc when there are other devices available that make use of the video calling function that is included in Android 2.3.

Typing on the touchscreen keyboard is not all that hard. The buttons are large, and the touch screen is quite accurate. In test runs, there were not a lot of mistakes found when typing, but as with any smart phone it can be difficult to always hit the right areas on the phone when texting quickly.

The price of the unlocked Xperia Arc will depend heavily on the plan that you choose. It is another solid offering from Sony Ericsson who is looking to step up their number of mid-tier smart phone offerings this year and offer more to mid-range budget users.

  • One rumor from the past few weeks in the cell phone industry was that the Unlocked Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 successor was in development after photos of the device surfaced in China. Now, it appears that a second photo of the rumored device has leaked online. This time, the phone is not on so it can be a little hard to tell if it is a knock off or a fake. If it is, it is a very high quality knock off. The keyboard looks very spacious, the device does have the full “Sony Ericsson” and “XPERIA” branding, and looks to be very high quality.

Of course, all of this is hard to confirm without being able to see what it looks like with the screen on. The X10 Mini Pro, as it has been unofficially dubbed would make an excellent addition to the already impressive Sony Ericsson lineup of smart mobile devices. Users would be ecstatic to get their hands on a smaller version of the wildly popular Sony Ericsson X10, as the company probably would have addressed some of the more major issues that were seen with the X10.

The phone will reportedly be very high powered, although no exact figures have been confirmed by the company at this time. In fact, they have not even announced that the phone is in the development stages so you should wait for an official announcement before you mark a release date down on your calendar. Hopefully the rumors of a high powered processor are true. You can bet that the Xperia X10 Mini Pro unlocked would at least see some improvements over the specs that were offered with the original phone. It will be interesting to see when they announce its development, and also how well it is received by users.

  • The Tonino Lamborghini Evoluzione will be running on the Android operating system and will provide users with capabilities that were not in the previous version of the device. Although most in the industry consider the unlocked cell phone to be a tad bit overpriced, there is no denying the service that comes with the Evoluzione. The Lamborghini smart devices have been considered to be very high quality, and are more so for the crowd that is looking for a richer smart device experience.

The phone only comes with a 3.2 inch HVGA display, and runs on a 600 MHz processor which will make the device undeniably underpowered when compared to some of the other big brand names phones that have been released in recent weeks. the phone certainly does not live up to its automotive name, and does not provide what you would expect from something that has a Lamborghini brand name.

The phone will cost a total of $600, which is more than $700 reduced from the previous price. But even at $600, you are still paying a lot more for the brand name than you ever would the phone. It would be more worth the money if they were able to offer a little incentive to purchase the phone. For the price, you would expect a Lamborghini to have some sort of sleek design that would make it stand out from the crowd, but that is not the case here. The phone, by all accounts, other than the name of course is about as plain as they come. Although they will be marketed to those that own their cars, they will also be available for purchase for individuals that do not own a Lamborghini motor vehicle as well. Don’t expect this phone to gain much in the way of popularity; the price tag is simply too high.

  • Although the Android app platform is easily the most popular app marketplace for unlocked Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Android devices, a number of third party app marketplaces have sprung up over the course of the last few months that often include apps that are specially designed for certain carriers, manufacturers and specific devices. It’s easy to see why these app stores have increased in popularity; they allow users to immediately see what apps are available for their device and to quickly and easily sift through them to find the ones that they would like. Google recently announced that they would be making some changes to their app marketplace to make it easier to navigate and find apps. Even with the changes to the official Google Android Marketplace, they still have not made things as easy on users as some of the third party app marketplaces.

Appsfire features a main screen that features several different lines of apps. The sections that it shows you can be customized, and some of the categories include featured apps, apps whose prices have been slashed, hot apps for the day, top free apps and top free games.

The main screen constantly changes to show you what is available, hot and new. One problem with the app is that it just shows you the icon for each of the app, which can make it hard to tell which app you are looking at as the marketplace does not display the names of any of the apps until you have selected it.

The “Discover” tab allows you to quickly search through the apps in a list format, which most users should find to be easier to use than the home screen. The list format provides the name and a short description of the app.

Appsfire looks promising, and certainly makes the large collection of Android apps easier to sift through, but has not made the process as simple as it could be. As of right now the home screen seems to be a little bit cluttered, but will allow you to search through more apps in a shorter period of time.

  • Car thieves have a lot more to worry about during the smart device era. There are a plethora of different devices that could potentially track the location of a car after it is stolen and thieves have to quickly disable these devices after making off with a car. With OnStar becoming increasingly popular in many different types of vehicles, stealing cars has never been so hard for these criminals.

One solid example of how the car theft game has changed is a recent incident in which a man was tracked and arrested less than ten minutes after stealing a car. There was no OnStar or any other built in software that tracked the location, but the man had stolen the car with an unlocked Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Android phone inside. Thanks to an appt hat was running on the device, the man who owned the car was able to log in to his application account and inform police of the exact location of the vehicle shortly after it was stolen. The man responsible for the theft was apprehended less than ten minutes after the theft took place.

The application that saved the day was Lookout, an application that is most commonly used as an antivirus tool for phone devices. Luckily, the device also doubles as a phone finding tool, allowing users to log in and check a GPS map to help them locate a lost phone. This application came in handy for the man whose car was stolen, helping him to quickly locate his car and provide police with details regarding its location.

This serves as one of a number of examples of how smart phone technology is thwarting everyday criminals. As these features expand, you can expect to hear more stories like this coming out. A small investment for his smart phone ended up saving the man in question all of the headaches that deal with locating a stolen car.

  • Not all unlocked cell phone are able to deliver video in 1080p at this time, but it is certainly the direction that the industry is heading. Now, KDDI’s R&D Labs has developed a method for getting the most out of your HD movie streams while you are out and about and not connected to WiFi network with a stable connection. The technology that they have been developing will allow you to zoom in on particular parts of the feed within the movie. The stream will then be automatically cropped from the far-away server. This will allow you to take a look at only the parts of the video that you would like to see, instead of having to watching the entire screen. The best part is that even the cropped images will be delivered in HD despite the fact that they will be full screen.

Even if you do not have an HD screen on your phone, you shouldn’t notice much reduction in quality as you zoom in on the video. The company developed the feature for users and companies alike. The upside for companies is that you will have much less data moving back and fourth because the user is only loading a portion of the video instead of the whole thing, and the user gets to see exactly what they want on the screen.

A video of the technology made its way to the web today and has attracted a lot of attention from various tech websites. It will be interesting to see if other companies become interested in a similar technology. As the streaming of movies over smart devices becomes more regular, features such as this, or any other cost cutting feature will be highly desired by mobile companies looking to cut back on their spending. Although these companies will incur a slight server side cost, in the end it should help them to save money.

  • Many new smart devices are finding that when they partner with Facebook and provide features that other phones do not for the social networking platform, their chances of success rise quite significantly. Now, the Skyfire 3.0  app for Android is going to be adding a number of Facebook features to their browser that will increase compatibility with the device.

Skyfire is known for being the web browser that allows unlocked iPhone 4 users to play flash content online even though Apple has not officially supported flash because they claim that it will make their phones vulnerable to attacks. Skyfire works by converting the flash videos into other types of videos that are more suitable for a plethora of different devices, and the fact that they are adding Facebook integration will only help the browser to grow.

In the same way that Digg and other social bookmarking sites work, Skyfire will allow users to check out the most popular content that has been bookmarked to Facebook through their browser. They have also added the “Fireplace” which gives you all of the news feeds and links, videos, and images that your friends have posted. You also can access a number of different Facebook pages, including your profile with a single click of a button.

This is good news for Skyfire users who have been hearing rumors regarding Facebook support for weeks now. With nearly the entire world on the social networking service it is smart to add integration on devices, apps, websites and everything in between. This is a move that will not only benefit thegrowth of the app, but the users who use it as well. It will be interesting to see how well the new features are received by their current users because it will take away from the browser screen and will add a number of different buttons to the browser itself, drastically changing the interface.
