  • Carrier IQ Is Spying On You!
Posted on December 8, 2011 by Pure Mobile

    By Aldo Panessidi

The Big Brother-esque actions of major carriers like ATT&T and Sprint has many consumers in an uproar and clamoring for vindication.  There is major concern of the possibility of Carrier IQ installed a tracking device that monitors texting keystrokes and cell phone usage on mobile devices.  The vendor is known for its root kit software which may be reporting users’ keystrokes, messages, and browsing history. This is an amazing case touting the many benefits of unlocked smartphones where you as the consumer can choose a carrier that does not work with Carrier IQ.

Carrier IQ Is Spying On You!

According to aforementioned vendor, the carriers use the software to “collect enough information to understand the customer experience with devices on our network and how to devise solutions to use and connection problems.”  That is fine and dandy, but the capability of the software to stealthily share sensitive information is alarming and Carrier IQ gives the carriers access to most or all of it.   Enhance your mobility... turn your device into a power tool.  Discover how premium electronic accessoriesspecifically designed to make your devices functionally efficient and performance rich.

There is, however, a new app from BitDefender that will put Android phone users at ease to protect against the Carrier IQ intrusion. This neat app detects the Carrier IQ software on the Google OS phones within seconds. Google Market has made the Carrier IQ Finder app free. Upon installation, tap the icon and voila! You’re an informed consumer with the knowledge of whether the software is on your handset or not. This action is still advisable to consumers shopping for an unlocked phone that will be carrier-neutral.

Where to go from that point? Well. There are limited options. You can install the removal tool developed by Eckhart (the security researcher who discovered the Carrier IQ software on his handset) which can be found at this Android Market link: Logging TestApp Pro Key. Or, you can install a third-part ROM.  Leaving your valuable mobile devices unprotected is risky!  Protect your devices from scratches and blemishes with our stylish top brand accessories.

Carrier IQ Is Spying On You!Because both of these actions require rooting the device (which makes sense in eradicating rootkit software), it is advisable to casual smartphone users to seek out a smartphone savvy friend or professional. The last recourse option is to wait for the carriers to issue software updates to uninstall the tool. This could come quickly as Carrier IQ related lawsuits are building up steam and the carriers will want to mitigate damages.   Let our trend setting fashionable accessories express your unique style.  Make your mobile devices stand out.  Customize your look - discover how cool you can be.

The public is currently in the dark on how this technology and collected information has been used by the carriers in question. No doubt there will be more news and details made available in the coming legal circus, but until there is a true fix in removing the root kit on your smartphone, user beware of what information you’re making available and considering sidestepping the carrier-smartphone manufacturer exclusivity fray the next time around with an unlocked phone.

LeNovo Enters Jousting for Market Share with New Smartphone If at first you don’t succeed, try again and try again! This age old adage is being followed by Chinese company, LeNovo. Yesterday they announced five new unlocked smartphones that didn’t overly impress the increasingly feature-centric and performance driven consumer market. However, today they released two LePhone droids that were more inspiring: the S760 and the K2.

The LeNovo LePhone S760 is quite compact with a 3.7” AMOLED screen, a 5 megapixel main camera and a 1.3 megapixel front camera. Its RAM is 512 MB powered by a single-core Scorpion CPU.  If camera quality is an important feature, this phone may not do the trick and consumers will want to comparison shop other mobile device options.  Wireless accessories are designed to protect, personalize and enhance your mobile devices.

On the other hand, the LePhone K2 is quite powerful: a dual-core 1.5GHz Scorpion CPU and a Qualcomm MSM8260 chipset. A full gigabyte of RAM is the cherry on top.  Also sporting an 8 megapixel camera and 1080p video recording, this smartphone makes great use of the 4.3” IPS LCD screen.  Consider top quality, innovative protective solutions and premium electronic accessories from the industry's leading brands.

LeNovo Enters Jousting for Market Share with New Smartphone

As of now, there is no news on when these newest additions to the smartphone market will be made available to North America.  Best case scenario is that eager LeNovo shoppers will be surprised with little boxes under the tree and stockings full of the fun gadgets and accessories!

  • SMS2130 is the new product launched in the upcoming Latin American cell phone TV market by Siano Mobile Silicon, the much talked about cell phone TV receiver chip maker. The chip supports the ISDB-T technology, this technology is also known as ISDB-T “1-Seg.”

The chip suits the exact needs of the of the market of that region as it introduces new optimization levels in cost and performance

Though the SMS2130 will initially launch in Brazil, but soon it will be available in the other Latin American countries including Chile and Argentina.

Until now nearly 40 cities in Brazil enjoy mobile TV, which covers a population of 70 million or more. Currently the services are available free of cost. There are plans of introducing more advance interactive services from 2011.

Availability wise… a few customers are already enabled to get sample chips and Siano stated that they are already engaged in developing electronic products with some of their customers. They are making electronic products including cell phones using the new chip, SMS2130.

It is worth mentioning that SMS2130 is the first of its kind in a totally new product family for the Latin American market. Though Latin America is an unpredictable place with an even more unpredictable market, if Siano can sell their product well it should result in them making a huge profit. Siano-based products have been selling in high volumes in Brazil for a few months now under the leading cell phone operators such as Vivo, Claro and TIM so it can be presumed that their new brand will also prosper. But we have to wait to find out how the story unfolds.

  • The Simon Property Group, that current owns more than 350 malls in the United States of America has teamed up with a startup from Silicon Valley called Shopkick in order to devise a way to make cell phone coupons work.

Starting from August, around 25 malls in the cities of Loa Angeles, San Francisco, Chicago and New York will have devises installed that will help Shopkick in its effort to make its cell phone coupons work. The malls owned by Simon Property Group, have on an average, 140-150 stores and the shops that will be participating in this scheme will have to have speakers installed near its entrance, which will emit a high frequency sound that is beyond the audibility limit of humans, but the frequency will match that of the microphones in mobile phones. When a customer walks by the store, they can activate the application, which is by the way, only available on unlocked iPhone4 and Android powered devices, and will start to receive points, discount offers, news and updates about what the shop has to offer and so much more that the shop could use to get you inside and cajole you to part with your money.

Four other big guns in the retail business are also using the latest application from Shopkick, the most recognizable being Macy’s Big Buy, although the other three wished to remain anonymous. Macy’s will have the technology up and running in almost 25% of its store in one week in the test phase and if the experiment goes well, they will expand it to the other stores as well. Sources reveal the Macy’s stores in San Francisco might be the first ones to have this technology.

However, the skepticism about it is still there and experts believe that it will drive young people to shop online even more.

  • The people at Nokia and Apple were expected to provide genuine haptic feedback technologies to devices such as the iPad and iPhone that would allow feedback on the touch screen, which can be perceived by the sense of touch and also can emulate the real sensation of variable surfaces and buttons. A demonstration from Senseg displays Apple’s iPhone4 and iPad working with Senseg E-Sense which is a new type of feedback technology. Senseg E-Sense has used electrical charges and the feel of a touch screen has completely changed. It is highly possible that iPhone makers are seriously considering localized haptics to use in their yet-to-be released, new-generation iDevices because the demo was shown on an unconcealed iPad. Now first-timers are probably wondering what exactly “tactile feedback” and “localized haptics” mean. The word “haptic” originated from the Greek word “haptikos” which means something pertaining to the sensation of touch. It originated from “haptesthai”, the Greek verb which means to “touch” or “contact”.

Tactile feedback is a term that is used in describing any sensation which is touch-based. In the world of unlocked smartphones the term has a range of descriptions, from the way a cell phone vibrates to show that a key is depressed to the way a finger presses to click a button. Often “tactile feedback” is replaced by the word “haptic feedback” as they are interchangeable words. However, the future lies in “localized feedback”. Handsets which have genuine haptic feedback technology installed in them would not simply vibrate when someone presses a key. Vibration feedback technology, though useful to some extent, is crude and a mere compromise till the grand entry of localized haptics is witnessed. With the advent of gen-next haptic technology touch screen would be able to create variable sensations when a user touches the display surface. The changes would be localized, restricted to the area under the direct touch of the finger.

  • It seems that Verizon, like Sprint, will charge an extra amount between $10 and $15 for using the data service of 4G LTE of the carrier-which is to be added to the data plan that exists in case of compatible devices. It is not at all surprising for us, but the reaction of the customers towards this drastic rise in fees will be interesting.

It is expected of Verizon to begin bringing 4G network of nascent to laptop (through data cards of USB) and after that the LTE enabled Unlocked Smartphone which will be in the market sometime during the initial half of the year 2011, if possible in the month of May. Motorola and Verizon are also rumored to launch Android Tablet that is FiOS-enabled before the end of the year. Since it will be a very expensive affair to launch a worldwide network, Verizon actually justifies the fee that is extra. But we are bound to agree that these types of infrastructural roll outs are much expensive, even more than T-Mobile USA’s upgrades of software.

The John Killian Verizon CFO said at the conference of Oppenheimer & Co. in Boston in this week,” Customers will pay for quality and premium service and premium speed”. The users will be facing the similar dilemma they faced in case of Sprint when it offered users of EVO 4G a service of premium not even available in the area you live in. It is pointed out by Verizon that even if the customer is not living in any 4G area, Sprint charges monthly premium of $10 for 4g Smartphone uses of EVO. Therefore, the 4G premium has link with to not just performance, but also coverage.

Thanks to that, AT&T and Verizon are nearly same I case of monthly bills, but because of this new fee hike; Big Red will become the carrier who is most expensive in US. T-Mobile has a need to upgrade the HSPA+ network of them to keep up with others.

  • Gangster goes to Miami
Posted on August 22, 2010 by Pure Mobile

It was only a year back, when Gangster: West Coast Hustle was released by Gameloft. The obvious inspiration for it was the Grand Theft Auto series by Rockstar Games. And as it seems, Gameloft has again been ‘inspired’ by the series and will be launching the follow up Gangster: Miami Vindication in a few weeks.

The backdrop of the game is beautiful Miami. The game is said to be full of unrestricted environments where you will be required to take up missions, with a combination of action and driving sequences and so you better brush up on those skills of yours phone. As it was with its predecessor, here also, you will be required to brawl, steal, kill i.e., get involved with a number of criminal activities as you advance through the game. The company has promised to surpass all previous levels of 3D graphics, as it looks to take advantage of the new Retina Display technology in the iPhone 4.

A trailer of the upcoming game was released by the company also to give gamers a sneak peak of what is to come, what they could expect from the game. The trailer looks promising, although some of the vehicles lack a few minor details, as well as some of the characters which could have been made to be much more detailed. Knowing these kinds of games lack details in its characters, it is very difficult to understand how even the Retina Display of the Unlocked iPhone 4 will help with the lack of quality in vehicles and models of characters.

Gangster: West Coast Hustle was very enjoyable and was immensely popular and those who loved the original game are surely looking forward to the new one, however, with such low key details, it might be hard for the company to keep hold of its fan base.

  • Now here’s some news for the Facebook addicts. Unlocked Motorola Milestone Android phones have finally got a platform on which users can successfully run all the Facebook applications. The man behind this creation is Eric Tseng. According to him people would avoid Android phones since its functionality was limited. With Facebook application installed the Androids are sure to get an upper hand in the market and the might just tiff off iPhone applications also!

The new version 1.3 can easily be downloaded from the Internet. Most noticeable thing about the Facebook application when you run it on your Unlocked Sony Ericsson Xperia x10 Android phone is the Homepage. Browsing media files is definitely a lot easier with it.

Only drawback is that sometimes the resolution is not clear (even on EVO 4G’s screen) and images and videos are not very distinguishable. So the poor image clarity makes it a time taking procedure since the user isn’t sure whether it’s a photo updated by a friend or some random video. There are some additional features also. Like notifications appear in the form of a taskbar at the bottom of the screen. Users can check their notifications by simply clicking on the task bar anytime they want to do so. Keeping the bar in the background users can update their statuses and perform searches.

Responding to friend requests is also easier. Without opening one’s mobile website, friend requests can be accepted or declined. “Picture Timeline” is a new era altogether. Users can browse through their friend’s photos with the help of this application. One important application, which fails to in the new Facebook application for Androids, is the Facebook chat. Absence of this particular feature makes the application almost at par with Facebook applications available on other Smartphones. Though Android developers promise to eliminate this shortcoming in their next version.

  • Last week there have been some problems with the Unlocked  Motorola Droid 2 model. Somehow mistakenly some picture where leaked out and they made their way into the Best But website.  Best Buy employees didn’t realize a goof up and put the model up on the list with all other models that were to be sold. Though it was confirmed that BestBuy was supposed to get the rights to sell the Android models but the pictures leaked out confirmed the word of mouth. The rumors proved to be true, it primarily confirmed the outing of the Android smartphone and secondly it assured that Best Buy would be carrying the rights of selling the Droid 2 on launch.

Now very recently pictures have surfaced online of actual cases that were made by Rocketfish. So now there is no room left for doubts even for skeptics who felt that the mega electronics dealer won’t be the one laying their hands on the latest product that were to come out of Verizon.

Now with everything set into motion, with the model getting its due publicity already though unwanted as of now. But all the pieces are in place and this leaves us with one question dangling: when will it launch? The official date for the newest product the Motorola Unlocked Droid (2) that is coming out with Verizon is not yet revealed. If sources are to be believed then this product too will be kept in the box for quite some time by Best Buy as they did for Droid X launch which is set to release on August 23rd. now all you loyal Android customers who have their heart set out on the Droid models, all you need to do now is build on your patients and wait for the launch for the smart phones. When they are out, all you would have to do is go to the Best Buy site or pick it up from the closest BestBuy store.

  • Music WithMe quite a catch
Posted on June 28, 2010 by Pure Mobile

With the world in its stride to make itself smarter than ever, it is a nagging feeling when you can’t just jack your phone into your PC and sync your device with iTunes as smoothly as you can with your new unlocked iPhone 4. You would have to take recourse of some kind of mass storage devices or USB mode only to have to go through the rather groveling task of manually dragging and dropping all your music into your cell phone’s SD card. The whole task is rather unnecessary, not to mention tedious and time consuming. But the whole messy out-of-date process can disappear in the bat of an eyelid with the new BlackBerry. With the new Music WithMe you can sync your BlackBerry with iTunes totally wirelessly.

It’s $15 from BlackBerry App World, which might raise a few eyebrows but if you are tired of fidgeting around and manually synchronizing all your then you should get this application. So let’s just run a little check on what you are about to treat yourself to and what you can expect with this item.

Using Wi-Fi or even a cellular connection, you can easily and wirelessly sync your iTunes playlists to BlackBerry.
