  • Information is pointing to Nokia offering their E6-00 smart device including an 8 megapixel camera and a keypad, to be announced in February at MWC in February. So far, there is no concrete evidence to suggest that the rumor is true. There is no leaked picture of the device, and all we have to go off of so far is just a render of the device.

However, an XML file was found on the Nokia website that suggests that the device will run on a CGA display with 640 x 480 resolution display, complete with WiFi, HSDPA and will also run on an ARM processor on the Symbian operating system. You can bet that it will be at least Symbian^3 or a newer version of the operating system.

The Unlocked Nokia phone ( E6-00 ) is also likely going to boast an eight megapixel camera that comes complete with LED flash and a full QWERTY keyboard for optimal communication. Some experts have also suggested that the newest version could be slightly larger than the Nokia E5, which was pretty small.

Fans are looking forward to an official announcement, since all there is to go off right now is hearsay and some information that was scraped from the Nokia website via an XML file. Although this information usually turns out to be true, who knows when the XML file was originally created and what changes they have made to their plans.

It will be interesting to see if the information that has been found turns out to be true. It will likely be formally introduced during the MWC in February in Barcelona, where those that opted out of making announcements during the Consumer Electronics Show will be announcing their newest technology and smart devices. Nokia usually stays fairly quiet about these things until an official announcement is made, so do not expect anything right away.

  • Virgin will be releasing the popular “Project” magazine application for free to all of their unlocked cell phone users during the Christmas season. The application, which usually costs $2.99 will be available for download. The magazine, which Virgin has called a “revolutionary multimedia magazine” allows users to browse from one page to another through the application, opting to move away from the standard paper magazines that we traditionally read. The magazine comes complete with cover shots and all of the advertisements and full page photos that you would expect from a regular magazine.

The information in the app is updated on a daily basis. They focus their journalism efforts on international culture, design, and entertainment. In one recent cover of the magazine, Jeff Bridges is pictured in a story about his upcoming “Tron” movie.

The magazine has quickly increased in popularity in recent years and has continually attempted to change the way that magazine reading is viewed. They focus on providing smart, readable articles that deliver the information to the reader in an interesting way. Many of the pieces in the magazine have a slight-opinionated feel to them, which only adds to the fact that it is more entertaining to read, because you feel strongly about most of the editorial pieces.

This is a deal that you ca not miss if you are looking for solid information on international topics that are encompassed by culture, entertainment and travel. As Project continues to grow in size, you can bet that they will not have a deal this good again any time soon, so its best that you take advantage of it when you have the opportunity.

  • Could Nokia Start Using Windows Phone 7
Posted on December 21, 2010 by Pure Mobile

A recent rumor from Nokia insider Eldar Murtazin claims that Nokia is currently in the process of working on a deal with Microsoft that would allow for them to utilize Windows Phone 7 on their upcoming unlocked cell phone. The devices had previously used Symbian, but the operating system has not received good marks from experts or customers in reviews, and it is clear that Nokia will have to move away from Symbian if they would like to remain competitive in the market.

The CEO of Nokia, Stephen Elop has reportedly been conversing with officials at Microsoft for the past few months and has spoken with them about the possibility of them launching a Windows Phone 7 device in the near future.

Regardless of the decision that they make, Nokia still has a large place in the marketplace. Them adding a partnership with Microsoft into the mix would be to the benefit of both companies and would allow both of them to grow. Windows Phone 7 is known for being meticulous when it comes to security. Their WGA software will lock the phone down if it detects that you are messing with any of the inner-working software that runs the operating system, and Symbian is an operating system that is obviously on the decline.

It will be interesting to see what kind of devices Nokia releases. They have never been at the forefront of the higher-end devices, but a new partnership with a growing operating system might force them to look to more advanced devices in the future.

The rumor also stated that they were not just discussing the possibility of a single phone, but instead a line of phones that would be sold through the various channels that Nokia has at their disposal. It would be an interesting partnership to say the least. Both companies have made huge gains in the mobile market in recent years and it only seems right that they meet in the middle to continue their surge.

  • The new  Unlocked Sony Ericsson U8a Vivaz Pro, a device for NextG is a phone that has not received a lot of attention from the mobile community, which is a bit surprising given the quality of the phone. The non-Pro version of the phone was a standalone touchscreen and the Pro gives users an upgrade to a QWERTY keyboard which should help in business situations. The QWERTY keyboard will allow users to more quickly communicate using the device and will speed up the social networking process.

The Unlocked Sony Ericsson Vivaz Pro, much like the previous versions of the phone wills till allow users to broadcast HD video, which was a huge selling point when the device was originally released. Users will also be able to download apps through the PlayNow marketplace as well as the Symbian Developer Community, which has grown quite a bit since the first version of the device was released.

The shape of the device has also changed for the pro release, making it easier to comfortably hold. The shape of the phone is now specifically molded to the shape of the human hand so that it fits comfortably in the hand when you are speaking on the phone.

The Vivaz Pro has a 3.2 inch touch screen that is completely scratch resistant and also features a 16:9 nHD touchscreen display screen. Along with the keyboard, the phone also provides users with a 5.1 megapixel camera that comes complete with up to 4x zoom and autofocus to ensure that you capture the best pictures possible. At only 117 grams in weight, the Sony Ericsson Vivaz Pro is a light weight phone that is very phone and fits comfortably int he pocket of jeans and other casual-wear. With the U8a Vivaz Pro unlocked being Next G compatible, it is a phone that should stand the test of time and make for a solid investment for anyone who enjoyed the original version of the phone but are looking for a more professional option.

  • BlackBerry Breaks into News Feeds
Posted on December 14, 2010 by Pure Mobile

Have you been waiting for a usable RSS reading application to come to the BlackBerry  unlocked handset? Many have, and RIM announced today that they have started the process of beta testing a new app that is called BlackBerry News Feeds, which will work in a way similar to that off other RSS feed readers. The company announced that they focused a creating a clean feed reader that would be easy for all of their users to use. As of right now, the biggest complaint regarding the new application is that there is no support with Google Reader, which is not something that they were expected to include anyway.

Adding new feeds to your feed reader is very simple, and also allows you to look through unread items, mark currently unread items as read, and share them with other friends that are also using the BlackBerry News Feed app.

The app went live today on the BlackBerry App World homepage and will also be available through their Beta Zone. Most of the major bugs seem to be already worked through, and the app runs fairly seamlessly already. RIM did not announce any plans to expand upon the features offered and instead seems to be focusing on offering a clear and concise reader that will be easy for their large number of users to operate.

This is an application that has been requested by many of their users for quite some time. The app will also include features that allow you to watch your various social feeds as well as website feeds and instant messenger feeds. Hopefully at some point in the near future they include some sort of integration with Google Reader, which has become the most popular RSS feed reader in recent years. The inclusion of that integration would make use of the BlackBerry News Feeds app much more viable for many of their users.

  • US Cellular announced three new plans today that are available for individuals with prepaid unlocked phones. The announcement comes just in time for the 2010 holiday season and the plans will include unlimited text messaging along with three different sets of minute plans. You can purchase 200, 400 or 100 minutes for your US Cellular prepaid device. Each of the plans will cost $29, $39, or $49. Plans of 400 minutes and above will also come with a monthly 5 gigabyte data plan.

As prepaid calling has become more popular in recent years because they do not require a contractual agreement, smaller providers have added increased features and new plans for these devices. In the beginning, many providers only offered one standard prepaid plan, but US Cellular has expanded to three plans that give their customers added flexibility.

The 200 minute plan is for the occasional phone user who likely only user their phone when they are out and about. the 400 minute plan also includes unlimited texting and picture messaging with 5 gigabytes of browsing data, and is geared toward individuals that are looking for the smart phone experience without having to agree to a contract. The 100 minute plan also overs unlimited text and video messaging, and is the step before their $69.99 prepaid plan which is also compatible with various smart phones and allows unlimited incoming calls on nights and weekends.

Many carriers, both in the contractual and pre-paid space have made changes to their offered plans in recent weeks just in time for the holiday season. The competitive nature of the industry forces these companies to constantly compete with each other by adding features or lowering their prices. It will be interesting to see if other prepaid providers follow suit and change their prices and plans following the US Cellular announcement.

  • The US Phone Carrier Sprint has announced that they will be extending their WiMAX Network to six more of the largest cities across the Untied States. The additional cities that the company has blanketed with the coverage include Los Angeles, Miami, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Columbus and Washington DC. This makes 68 different cities that the WiMAX Network is available in. Sprint first started to roll  out the service earlier this year and it was already available in Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Dallas, Houston and New York.

They also announced that they would be looking to extend the network to a number of other markets in the coming weeks including San Francisco, which is the home of Silicon Valley and most of the tech industry.

In order to use the new, faster network from Sprint you must have a device that is Sprint 4G enabled. WiMax stands for Worldwide Interoperability for Microwave Access is is considered to be one of the fastest networks currently available to US carriers with the capability to deliver up to 40 Mbit per second. It will be interesting to see if other companies adopt the network. Sprint has already reported increased speeds across all of their 4G devices which are able to use WiMAX and have decided to continue to spread the network in an effort to prepare for the upcoming generations of smart devices that will likely be able to make more use of the network than previous generations.

It will be interesting to see how quickly the network begins to spread over the coming months. Sprint already has 68 markets that are WiMAX-enabled, and they have shown no signs of slowing down their operation to expand the network anytime soon. The move is one that will not only benefit the company, but will benefit their hundreds of thousands of customers as well.

  • Although spyware is mostly reserved for systems that run on a Windows platform, SecTheory, a security firm suggests that perhaps the newly acquired Hewlett Packard webOS platform could also be forced to deal with spyware concerns in the very near future.

The security firm claims that they have already been able to find a number of flaws in the operating system that could potentially leave it open for spyware harassment and a plethora of different exploits that could hinder the experience of the end user. One exploit that the firm detailed involved the data field in the contacts app which can be used to run different types of code. This issue was actually already addressed with the release of webOS 2.0, but there are still quite a few errors that were detailed by SecTheory that have yet to be fixed. These exploits include a denial of service error, cross-site scripting issues that could leave webOS devices vulnerable to attack and a floating-point overflow issue.

Hewlett Packard will likely move quickly to fix all of the issues that were pointed out by the security firm SecTheory, especially since the company just recently acquired Palm OS and is looking to integrate the technology into a umber of their own unlocked cell phone next year. Sectheory speculated that webOS has been exposed as an underdeveloped platform which will make the platform more enticing to hackers and coders who are looking to infect your smart device with malware and spyware in an effort to capture information.

Although no operating system is completely secure, the flaws that were exposed in the framework of webOS devices should be worrisome to individuals that were looking to purchase a device that runs on the platform. It is clear that HP has a great deal of work to do before consumers should feel completely safe while using the platform.
