Moshi for iPad
  • On the heels of their recent announcement regarding the upcoming rollout of the highly anticipated 4G network Verizon Wireless’s CTO Anthony Melone has targeted next summer as the time frame for the carrier’s first LTE handset release.  While the aforementioned 4G network is expected to be ready by the end of this year all of us tech junkies will have to wait a little longer for the first unlocked cell phone handset.

It should be well worth the wait though as these new mobile devices are expected to have the same downloading and uploading speed as your home computer.  In the current test markets in Boston and Seattle engineers were blown away by the results they were seeing which is a great sign for the possibilities to come.  Also, videos will be able to be seen in 1080p high definition which should really revolutionize the way people consume video content on their mobile devices.

There is one bit of bad news that is expected to come with the awesome power of the new 4G network.  It appears that Verizon and even AT&T are headed down the path of eliminating unlimited data plans and moving to a tiered structure.  While it does make sense for these companies to charge people for the amount of data they download or even upload it is still a bummer that we finally get some great internet speeds on our mobile devices like the Blackberry Pearl but will have to pay more to fully enjoy them.

  • According to CareerBuilders.com, 57% of mobile workers (meaning people who primarily work on the road), use their unlocked cell phone while in the bathroom.  And I’m not going to lie, I do this regularly myself.  Polling 5,200 respondents, they found a host of interesting stats.  Not only do we engage in dirty behavior, the majority of us also engage in extremely RISKY behavior.  54% of all workers admitted to checking their phones while driving, and in no surprise, in their never ending quest to make a sale, 66% of sales workers admitted to smartphoning behind the wheel.  In one of the most disturbing responses, half of all health care workers admitted to using cell phones in their cars.  We can only hope that statistic does not include ambulance drivers.

It truly is an addiction.  Almost one fifth of all respondents said they check their phone immediately after it vibrates or beeps, and the same percentage says that their employer demands they be reachable via cell phone after work hours.  Most professionals relay on their smart phones such as the Motorola Backflip, for a non-stop flow of incoming and outgoing information, and based on the above stats, I’d be surprised if we don’t see an increase in state and federal legislation penalizing those who use their cell phones while driving.  Some other interesting stats taken from this study:

    • 62% check during a meal
    • 60% check while on vacation
    • 57% check while in the bathroom
    • 50% check while lying in bed at night
    • 25% check when at the movies
    • 18% check while on a date
    • 17% check while working out at the gym
    • 17% check when attending their kid’s  events
    • And in a move that will probably shock and disgust your Grandmother, 11% admit to checking their smartphones while at church!

  • NFL Going To Verizon
Posted on March 10, 2010 by Pure Mobile

The NFL has just signed an agreement with Verizon wireless for a four year deal that will bring NFL Mobile to Verizon users.  This comes after Sprint decided that the price to carry the NFL sponsorship did not seem to be cost effective.  It should be online, right before the NFL draft that will be happening in April.  In conjunction with the deal, Verizon wireless will become the official NFL wireless provider.  This new app will enable users to keep track of their favorite teams no matter where they are especially on their BlackBerry Curve 8520 unlocked cell phone device.

One of the favorites is going to be the NFL RedZone channel that will give you a look at all of the key plays and touchdowns from the Sunday games.  You will be able to watch live video from the Friday night and Thursday night football games from NBC.  You also get the NFL network channel that operates 365 days and 24 hours per day to get all of your football news and scores.  You also be able to get game highlights, as well as being able to check out some of the NFL films.  You will have live broadcasts on the radio for every game including the playoffs.  For all of you fantasy football enthusiasts, you will have access to unlimited information as well as news and player statistics.

No NFL program would be complete without being able to get signature ring tones, graphics and getting NFL alerts that you have customized.  You can kick off this new program for Verizon by taking advantage of it for the upcoming draft.  You will not miss any of the exciting news of the draft because the program will give you a live feed of the draft as it happens right on your BlackBerry Storm 2 or other unlocked cell phone.  It will also have tons of news; lots of blogs that will let you keep track of everyone that is picked moment by moment.  No pricing has been released yet, but it should be available very soon.

  • Verizon Class Action Suit
Posted on March 2, 2010 by Pure Mobile

Verizon wireless has received notification that they are being sued in a class action lawsuit in the state of New Jersey.  This class-action suit from the law firm of Goldman Scarlato & Karon, P.C. has been filed on behalf of cell phone users that do not have smart phones.  They are claiming that these users have been charged for data transfer services that they have never actually used.  This is in regard to customers being charged accidentally the $1.99 per megabyte for accessing the web or using any other data services.  Verizon stated that these charges are only access to those users that stray away from the Verizon home page and obtain other applications and services.  The lawsuit claims that Verizon has charged customers even though they have not accessed this type of service.  The lawsuit is looking to be able to return the money is improperly charged back to the customers.

In other news, the major United States carriers, AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile and Verizon Wireless, along with Google have begun to respond to the FCC in regard to the early termination fees that customers have to pay.  It has long known that these carriers as well as others have had extremely high early termination fees in order to cover the costs of the cell phone devices that they provide at a discount through their plans.  Google has stated that their $350 fee for customers that use the Nexus One and break their contract is fair.

In the past, Nexus One users have had to actually pay early termination fees to both Google and T-Mobile.  They have begun to reduce some of these early termination fees and have actually lowered it to $150 for new T-Mobile customers.  The make your carriers also explained that they would be making sure that they fully disclose the early termination fees to all customers.  This is just one more reason why unlocked cell phones are probably one of the best ways to avoid the unnecessary fees from the major carriers in the United States.

  • The "Buzz" is All About A Lawsuit
Posted on February 22, 2010 by Pure Mobile

When Google announced their new social network, Buzz, they did not fully take into account how important people think their privacy is.  Two days after it was first launched, Google had to make several revisions to the platform.

Originally, the application was Google’s answer to Twitter but with some extras.  Buzz was to let you use Google Maps with Buzz in order for you to focus on your actual location and synching it with your Gmail address book.  The application lets you share your location with others and gives additional information about the place you are visiting.  This app syncs with your Google Nexus One unlocked cell phone and your computer.  This would let your followers know where you are and what you are doing.

Unfortunately when it was released, it allowed everyone to see your public profile.  As a user, you had to block the public from viewing your information.  On February 12, 2010, Google made some changes so you could block anyone following you that you did not want following you.  They based these changes on the amount of user feedback stating that this was an invasion of privacy.  Google enhanced Buzz with features to improve privacy settings and giving the user more control about how information would be shared.

HTC Google Nexus One Black Unlocked GSM Cellular Phone

This must not be enough for some users as a lawsuit was filed this week in San Jose (CA).  The class action was filed in federal court and states that Google has invaded privacy issues by how it released Buzz.  Most times, applications state that you must opt in, while Buzz made it so that you had to opt out.  This made over 31 million users of Gmail affected by the way Buzz was introduced.  The suit could actually include every Gmail user.  Google has not made any official statement, as they have not yet taken a look at the lawsuit.  You would have thought that Google would have taken into consideration these kinds of privacy issues prior to the release.  Make sure that your public profile is excluded before you use Buzz on your mobile unlocked cell phone like the Google Nexus One.

  • Benefits of an Unlocked Cell Phone
Posted on February 19, 2010 by Pure Mobile

It is very surprising to realize that most people in the United States do not know or understand what an unlocked cell phone is.  I was having dinner with my family this past week, and of course the discussion turned towards cell phones and cell phone plans.  I was explaining that there were numerous benefits to purchasing an unlocked cell phone.

My sister-in-law had just purchased the new Samsung 1637 Jack unlocked and of course now she is locked into another three-year contract with her current carrier.  I asked her why she did this, as she has never really cared much for her current plan.  She bought a phone and extended her plan because she figured that it was her only option to getting a new cell phone.

Samsung I637 JACK 3G NAM Black AT&T Unlocked GSM Cellular Phone

I explained to her that by purchasing an unlocked cell phone, it would give her the freedom and flexibility in choosing a carrier.  I explained that she may have even been able to save some extra money as the cost of the phone would not be buried in the plan.  I also explained that since she does travel outside the country several times a year, that an unlocked cell phone would give her the freedom to purchase local Sim cards, so she would not occur any additional charges from her carrier.

When I started to explain that there are many phones we do not even have access to here in the United States, and some of the amazing features of the phones, I began to get the attention of some of my younger nieces and nephews.  I explained to them that they would be able to get some of the newest technology that is only available in the European markets by purchasing an unlocked cell phone like the Sony Ericsson Aspen unlocked.

I think they will all start to consider purchasing an unlocked cell phone the next time their current contract from their carrier is about to end.  When I explained to them some of the amazing phones and all the features that they have, which we are not yet able to get here, they all pulled out their existing phones and began to enter the website information for Pure Mobile to purchase their unlocked cell phone.
