Moshi for iPad
  • Not so long ago Nintendo, the renowned Japanese, gaming company set consumer markets ablaze with its Gameboy Advance and subsequent Nintendo DS and Nintendo Wii releases. Profits at that point of time for the Japanese firm had sky rocketed through the record breaking sales of their subsequent platform releases. However the most shocking reports to surface about the company was the whole plan for a proper Nintendo cellphone. The rumours that had been sparked at the time, had set gaming enthusiasts buzzing with excitement, for in all practicality it meant that an incredible gaming oriented phone was on its way. However the rumours and in effect the plans died down.

Now detailed reports are surfacing that the rumours were actually true and there had indeed been plans for a Nintendo phone which died at the Research and Development headquarters of Nintendo in Japan. The reports claim that the whole idea was started when Nokia initiated contact with Nintendo over plans for a joint effort in releasing the rumoured device. R&D apparently took serious initiative in moving forward with plans for the same. The blueprints were readied and a board approval impending further steps were about to be taken when the whole idea was rejected by the board.

Apparently Nokia’s parallel failure with its gaming platform form the N-gage played a catalyzing role in the board’s decision to reject the plans which had reached a sufficiently advanced stage. This is a pity because today Apple and Google with their Unlocked  iPhone4 and Android respectively are laughing away to the bank with complete dominance over the mobile gaming industry. To think if Nintendo had pushed through with their plans the mobile gaming industry would have looked entirely different altogether. Imagine the sheer delight of phone and gaming enthusiasts considering the options they would have had at hand!

  • The Unlocked iPhone4 exclusively was marketed by AT&T for time immemorial(a little over three years in the mobile world) in US, but that is short lived, in the wake of the rumor of a iPhone launch by Verizon  in few years. If/When the Verizon iPhone is really launched; Big Red can cause a big setback to AT&T by help of their self proclaimed superior wireless network. A new study reveals that a large part of the existing users of iPhone on AT&T are keen on replacing them with an alternative Apple Smartphone carrier.

The numbers, though not that surprising, are very significant. According to the study from Morpace, 1 out of 3 AT&T iPhone users are considering changing loyalties to handsets on another carrier. A solid 34% want to jump ship, and 47% of the current users are ready to consider a Verizon alternative of their handset of choice. This is not at all good for the carriers’ bottom line when Apple will start reaching out for its iOS-powered Smartphone to the various other carrier partners.

The survey also categorizes the customer intent by carrier.20% of T-Mobile customers are “somewhat” or “very likely” to opt for an Apple Smartphone on Verizon. The same thing applies for 22% and 23% customers of Sprint and AT&T respectively. But surprisingly, 51% of Verizon customers are waiting for a handset powered by iOS which is certainly the icing on the cake.

Even more fascinating is the possible impact an iPhone on Verizon will have on the other Smart phones offered by Big Red. At present, the majority of most compelling Android Smart phones are claimed by Verizon in US. A lot of their resources are invested into marketing Android phones like Unlocked Motorola Droid X and Motorola Droid 2. Considering the arch rivalry between Android and iOS in the mobile space, it is worth wondering how newcomer Apple will overcome Android, especially if it is more powerful than AT&T’s iPhone 4.

  • Steve Jobs blamed San Francisco to be too slow in advancement and says it takes up to three years to get a cell tower built in San Francisco. This might shed new light into the enigma of poor reception in San Francisco. The local Government is to be blamed instead of AT & T according to Steve Jobs. The network building problem was brought up by Steve Jobs in the recent ‘Antennagate’ conference.

AT & T has been making numerous efforts including great investments in order to better the network but it has been futile in places like San Francisco because of lack of support from the Government. The lack of tech press in San Francisco is another reason for this particular problem going unnoticed. Although AT & T may be responsible to a certain extent in not being able to imagine the demand created by Apple Unlocked iphone 4 but according to Steve Jobs, the blame should be shouldered by the Government.

Jobs expressed his support for AT & T saying that the company has made several moves to better the network by putting up cellular towers but if they are not allowed to do what is required then all the initiative goes to waste. There is no scope for investment if the local Governments are reluctant about all this. This is particularly strange for Jobs as he says that most people in the Government of San Francisco own an Apple iphone.

Federal Communications Commission Chairman Julius Genachowski may be the ideal man to better this anomalous condition. The ‘shot clock’ method devised by him can be the best way to get the infrastructure ready in little time. This may be the last resort for cell phone carriers like AT & T to be able to improvise and invest on creating as many cell towers as possible in order to better the reception quality in places such as San Francisco.
