IDC’s tablet shipment projections To reach 222 million by 2016

Expectations for tablet sales keep increasing. The market research firm IDC just released a new study that shows a higher demand for tablets than they expected by the end of 2012 and beyond. IDC expects tablet shipments to reach 107.4 million this year, up from 106.1 million units.

By year end, the Apple iPad is expected to account for 62.5% of total global shipments, up from 58.2% in 2011. Android tablet market share looks like it will decline from 38.7% in 2011 to 36.5% in 2012.

In the longer term, IDC upped its 2013 tablet forecast from 137.4 million to 142.8 million units. The research firm expects 2016 worldwide shipments to reach 222.1 million units.

IDC’s tablet shipment projections To reach 222 million by 2016

Tom Mainelli, research director for Mobile Connected Devices at IDC explained the increases this way: “Demand for media tablets remains robust, and we see an increasing interest in the category from the commercial side. We expect pending new products from major players, increasingly affordable mainstream devices, and a huge marketing blitz from Microsoft around Windows 8 to drive increased consumer interest in the category through the end of the year.”

Not only is Apple under fire for the factory conditions and dust explosions that have occurred at their Chinese based manufacturing locations, but according UBM TechInsights, the Silicon Valley darling is looking at a lower profit margin on its upcoming iPad3.

The new iPad 3 will have an estimated bill of materials cost of $310, up from $270.86 on the original iPad and $276.27 on the iPad 2 based on versions at launch using 16 Gbytes memory. By selling all three at the same $629 price, Apple is cutting its profit margins about five points from 56-57 percent on the first two generation products to 51 percent on the new iPad, UBM TechInsights projected.

    iPad Models Comparison

Apple’s profit margin on the iPad 2 will dip to an estimated 53 percent when it is discounted to $529 at the release of the new model. The iPad 2 sustains less of a hit because prices of its components are projected to have come down since its launch last year resulting in a current bill of materials cost of $248.07 for the 2012 version of the iPad 2, it said.

Leaving your valuable tablet devices unprotected is risky!  Discover the latest innovative protection solutions... stylish top brand bags, sleeves and cases specifically designed to protect your devices from scratches and blemishes.  Tough on the outside, sweet on the inside these brand name protection accessories combine complete device coverage with sleek artistic expression.

Why the cost increase? It is in large part thanks to the new iPad’s Retina display. UBM notes that those changes in display cost Apple approximately $70 compared to the $49.50 iPad2 display. In addition to the Retina display, the iPad3’s 4G LTE chips are more than double in cost to the iPad2’s 3G chips ($21 per chip compared to $10) and a more expensive A5X processor chip that adds another $6 in cost.

    iPad Prices Comparison

One can only assume that Apple will look to periphery devices (wireless keyboards, protective cases, docking stations etc) to help close the gap in their gross profit margins for this newest iPad. But as these devices become more expensive to manufacturer, retail prices will inevitably rise. The same may be true for Apple’s line of iPhone 4S smartphone as well. These handsets will also have the more costly 4G LTE chips and increasingly more advanced displays.

As these prices rise, it may cause consumers to take stock of what they are shelling out hundreds of dollars for. Many times, it is more cost effective to reinvest in tablet accessories and less costly peripheral devices to achieve a comparable user experience. And, as in home renovations, sometimes a fresh coat of paint or a new protective case is just as effective in revitalizing the object in question.

    Apple iPad 3 Generation Review

Can you hear the Apple machine cranking? The infamous company has yet to reach its zenith for this century according to Gartner reports and financial projections of the past few weeks and its adoring public is not likely to disappoint or be disappointed.

Tablet Sales vs PC SalesTablets will see an explosion in sales over the next four years, selling 60% as many units as PCs by 2015 – and Apple iPad will still have almost half the market by then, says the research group Gartner in a bullish forecast.

IDC and Gartner PC v Tablet forecast to 2015, when Gartner puts tablet unit sales at 60% of PCs'

The following video provides a iPad 3 - Rumor Roundup

Selling power of the iPadAfter delivering a surprisingly popular (and by last quarter’s earnings reports, buyable) iPhone 4S, we are more prepared than ever to see the company’s latest iPad. The iPad 3 has had rumors swirling about it for months now. Considering the slate is to be the third in a line of tablet royalty, it is no wonder that the speculation and press around the device could easily fit into the format of US Weekly. And would probably be interesting than reading about the

So when we caught wind that images of the device had been published by the Chinese language Apple Daily before the official announcement, inquiring minds needed to know just how accurate those images were considering the limited visuals that had been previously leaked. We are also keeping an ear to the ground for any news on Apple iPad3 accessories

Happily, previous reports seem in line with what was seen in the Apple Daily. The case will be familiar to iPad2 users, but has the twist: a gradual taper leading from the back to the edges. This will likely translate into new accessories needed for the new slate, but that remains to be seen.

From the spec perspective, the Apple Daily reconfirms that the iPad3 will have a 9.7-inch Retina Display and an 8-megapixel camera. With a quad-core Apple A6 processor and embedded 4G LTE connectivity under the hood, customers will not be disappointed. Apple is expected to debut the iPad3 at a press conference early March where we will hopefully hear more of plans to pair exclusively with a telecommunications carrier or if the device will be made available unlocked.

There is no question that Samsung has the Android smartphone mastered at this point. With world-wide popularity and the manufacturer of the de facto line of Galaxy S 2  smartphones that are synonymous with “Android.” This set the bar high for a Samsung tablet. So far these expectations have fallen flat.

    Samsung Galaxy Tab Rumors

Hopefully this trajectory changes following the rumored cancellation of the Samsung Galaxy S III that was scheduled to launch at Mobile World Congress. According to Android And Me, the upcoming Galaxy Tab would be a great replacement with an Exynos 5250 processor with a 10 inch display and the Android 4.0 OS, Ice Cream Sandwich.

Turn your Samsung device into a power tool!  Discover select accessories such as; stylus & pens, micro SD memory cards, batteries, docking stations, Bluetooth headsets, data cables and glider gloves all specifically designed to make your devices functionally efficient and performance rich.

What gives this latest gossip credence is the prototype seen at this year’s Consumer Electronics Show. And what will set this slate apart is the fact that it not only will have the Android 4.0 but will also be Samsung’s first mobile processor with ARM’s latest Cortex-A15 CPU core. This translates into double the computing power, augmented memory bandwidth, all-day battery life and a whopping five times the graphics horsepower of existing CPUs.

These kinds of next-gen specs could be the turning point in Samsung’s quest to make a significant play in the tablet market. If they add in some innovative, top of the line accessories to the next release they can compete and incentivize customers to add another Samsung device into their homes. Whether those are docking stations, wireless attachments, or just artistic and great protective covers, these kinds of add-ons have the ability to solidify the popularity in this market for Samsung.

There are no details on when this would be made available to the general public, but we will be sure to keep you informed of what Samsung’s offering will be.

Get excited iBooks users! The iOS jailbreak known as Corona that was released last month for the iPhone4S and iPad is now updated to support Apple’s e-reader, iBooks. Be sure to get your updates though, as it is the build for version iOS 5.0.1.

    Corona JailBreak Apple

But what does this new jailbreak upgrade mean for your Apple experience? While not as gratifying as playing with a new acquisition from the phenomenal family of accessories for each of the tablet, iPod media device and smartphones that will be covered by this new software update, it could address some of the issues occurring during browsing sessions on these same devices.

Because if you have experienced the launcher crashing on occasion, it is this upgrade that will doctor it up. There are some other bugs that will be fixed as well, but the addressed launcher is the biggie (for the really technical of you out there, the build is also included in redsn0w 0.9.10b4). So, with this update you need not fear having to remove your favorite Apple handset or tablet from its cozy protective case to play tech detective.

Leaving your valuable mobile devices unprotected is risky!  Discover the latest innovative protection solutions... stylish top brand bags, sleeves and cases specifically designed to protect your devices from scratches and blemishes.  Tough on the outside, sweet on the inside these brand name protection accessories combine complete device coverage with sleek artistic expression.

For those of you who already have jailbroken iPhone4 or iPad devices, Corona can be found and run through the Cydia store. Another option is downloading the updated OS X for Windows version (redsn0w) which will have the same impact.

    iPhone 4 3GS Unlock

And if you do not yet possess this untethered jailbreak, you can find more information on compatibility for iPhone 3GS, iPhone4, the first generation iPad, iPod Touch 3G and the iPod Touch 4G. Clearly this development team has been hard at work to bring this jailbreak technology to Apple’s various device offerings of smartphones, tablets and media players. Now, if we can keep that open concept movement to empower customers at other levels of purchasing and freedom of customization, amazing innovation is in the works.

Apple marketing is sure to have their paws all over the latest IDG business survey which finds that the iPad is gaining explosive momentum in the business community all over the.

Tablet Use - How Tablets are used

The survey shows that 91% of IT and business professionals use their iPads for work. The kicker is that despite this high percentage of usage, only a quarter of these devices are issued by companies.

A surprising 51% of those surveyed always use the device at work, almost as many who always use it at home (54%).

Perhaps this is because professionals use the sleek tablet for media consumption in typical consumer behavior in addition to using it to increase their productivity on the go. The trends point to very high levels of use while they are on the road (a full 79% of IT professionals surveyed always use their iPad on the road). The smaller size of the device makes it easier to tote around when traveling; the array of accessories accessories such as; stylus & pensmicro SD memory cardsbatteriesdocking stationsBluetooth headsetsdata cables and glider gloves all specifically designed to makes this device more functionally efficient and performance rich.

So where is the monumental shift of iPads replacing notebooks and desktops at the corporate level? It seems to be a different kind of shift, more of an evolution than a revolution. Most of those IT and business professionals surveyed said that despite their high level of iPad use, they have not abandoned their other desktop or laptop computers. iLuv and some other accessory manufacturers did roll out some great docking stations and workstations that may help increase the adoption rate of iPads for businesses.

    Global Media Tablet Shipment Forecast

Apple itself should look into how to better leverage its products and the accessories to make it a clearer choice for consumers. We have brought Apple’s smartphones, media devices, and now slate computers into our homes and now into our offices. There is an incredible amount of loyalty to the brand, but their messaging has largely been centered on the consumer and its media uses. They have to help bridge those gaps and work on their solution selling where companies or individual professionals can buy a comprehensive solution to fit their changing needs.

The readers and editors of CNET granted the Research In Motion owned QNX platform for their latest Blackberry smartphones and PlayBook 2.0 as well as for the best best car tech for its QNX CAR 2 application which will has impressive implications. Tying the mobile OS into the car keeps the consumer demand for technological entertainment at their fingertips while incorporating conversational voice recognition.

Is 2012 the year of Research In Motion? Last year was rough for the once mighty smartphone and tablet OS company, but with its recent CES recognition for the impressive QNX car technology and now the PlayBook 2.0 something tangible to review, RIM may have some more blue skies in its futures.   View this interesting video for more insight on Blackberry's PlayBook 2.0

According to recent reports, the PlayBook 2.0 will be available in February and will make the tablet actually functional again. How? Top of the list is that native email and calendar are now included and the company has caught up with the times and integrated social media networking (i.e. Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, etc) and all of your friends posts and activities can be viewed in the Contacts Hub.

Next, the keyboard has been drastically revamped to incorporate autocorrect and algorithmic predictive typing. That will adapt to your typing style and suggests its guess of your next typed word. Surprisingly, this tablet does feature Android apps in its App World and reviews indicate that they run as smoothly as native code.

In fact, Alec Saunders, the VP of Developer Relations, has hinted at RIM learning its mistakes from its initial PlayBook launch and are humbly making changes to bring a competitive product to market that will allow for innovation with developers, tech accessories, and other peripheral technology. This attitude change has brought valuable partnerships with EA Games and Rovio and will create a compelling story for customers.

Added incentive for investing in RIM and the PlayBook upon its release in 2012 is its competitive pricing. At $299 it may very well be the contender it was created to be in a market dominated by Apple and to a lesser degree Android.  As more news is released on the upcoming launch, we will keep you posted on whether the body has changed drastically enough to require new protective cases purchases and how current PlayBook customers will be able to recycle their other existing  accessories.
