  • Women Falls in Sewer for Cellphone
Posted on August 6, 2012 by Pure Mobile

A 46 year old Jackson, Mississippi woman got stuck in a sewer on June 21, 2012 while attempting to get a smartphone back that she had accidentally dropped into the sewer. The woman fell in the sewer at the corner of Watson and Piney Woods Streets, just off of Martin Luther King Drive. Lori McElroy of 1312 Piney Woods Street was talking on a cell phone, when she accidentally dropped her iPhone 4S into a sewer. She was accidentally stuck in the sewer drainage system as she attempted to get the cell phone she dropped down the drainage system.

The fire department was called and had to use the Jaws of Life to get her out. The woman was rather embarrassed but thankfully unhurt and unharmed. "I was on the phone talking with somebody and then I dropped the Apple iPhone 4S in the sewer" said McElroy."There wasn't any water in it, so I figured I could go down there and get it. Then I got stuck and couldn't get out."

She continues on by saying, “"And then they had to call the fire department and the ambulance. I feel wonderful that I am out, but it was a stupid mistake. It's better to just go buy another phone instead of having to go through that." She said that a "phone isn't worth it" and if this happens to you, "just go buy a new one."

Sync to your Google Contacts and have your contacts’ information added to the MightyText web app.  You’re all set to send a receive texts without your phone in hand.

I’m sure you can come up with a few scenarios where the MightyText option would come in handy. Maybe your phone is dead and you need to check your texts. Maybe you’re at the office with your laptop in front of you, and you can’t pull out your smartphone. Pull up the MightyText website and send and receive texts on your computer.

Mobile phone maker Nokia announced this week that it plans to restructure. Nokia is trying to stay in business with job cuts, sale of its Vertu luxury product line and reorganization at the top of the company. With $1.7 billion lost in the first three months of this year and a $1.2 billion in 4Q 2011, the company is on a sad slide.

Nokia loses $3 billion in last 6 months, cuts 10,000 more jobs, sells Vertu

The 10,000 job cuts add to last year’s workforce reduction of 14,000 employees. This year Nokia will shut down research and development facilities in Ulm, Germany, and Burnaby, Canada, and a manufacturing facility in Salo, Finland. It also plans to shuffle senior leadership and acquire Swedish software firm Scalado AB.

Nokia’s latest strategy shows an increasing reliance on the potential for success with Windows Phone. The Scalado AB is a mobile image company. Its acquisition should strengthen Nokia’s Windows Phone service portfolio for the Nokia Lumia 900, and the remaining Lumia line of busienss.  In the press release announcing the restructuring, Nokia said it acquired Scalado AB to beef up its "imaging experience" for its line of Lumia devices.

Nokia said making the cuts and the restructuring will cost it about $1.2 billion but will reduce costs by about $2 billion by next year. It also lowered second-quarter earnings expectations.

Now that the Samsung Galaxy S3 is in consumer hands, Samsung is telling how they were so good at keeping the details of the new device top secret. They were so tight-lipped that engineer Buyong-Joon Lee wouldn’t even admit what he was doing when asked by his 11-year-old son.

Samsung admits how it kept its Galaxy S3 secrets

The lengths took to keep us guessing were extensive. Handsets were moved between facilities in locked boxes. One executive was charged with hand-delivering prototype devices to network partners. Samsung further befuddled watchers by producing three Samsung Galaxy  S3 devices with completely different specs. Each model was designed and constructed as if it was the final product. Engineering teams had to build and rebuild components to accommodate each design, just as if all of them were the final model.

Of course had to get help from lots of internal departments to get the device to market, but even they were kept in the dark as much as possible. For example, just to set prices and buy components, the procurement department had to rely on written descriptions of parts, not the parts themselves.

Well, Samsung did the seemingly impossible task these days of launching a flagship device before the market knew all its secrets.

What a difference a year makes: smartphone users dominate the market

According to a report released by Nielsen, this is the first time that more than half of all mobile customers in the U.S. own a smartphone. That's up a whopping 38% from a year ago.

With Android and iOS accounting for more than 80% of the U.S. market, smartphones are changing the way people use their handsets. Smartphone users are spending 39 minutes per day using their apps, up 10% from a year ago. The number of apps downloaded to Apple iPhone and Google Android devices grew 28% over the past year to an average of 41 apps per phone.

A Google study also released Wednesday found that 26% of U.S. smartphone owners would rather give up their computer than their smartphone -- a sign that smartphones are truly becoming mini-PCs.

Despite the increase of apps, smartphone owners spend roughly the same amount of time using them each day:  37 minutes in 2011, compared to 39 minute in 2012.

Facebook, YouTube, Android market (now Google Play Store), Google Search and Gmail remain the top five most-used apps, according to Nielsen. That isn't particularly surprising, since all of those apps except for Facebook are pre-loaded onto most Android devices.

Back in January of this year, market research firm Deloitte estimated that 2012 will see entry-level smartphones become more popular with the number of sub-$100 smartphones in use globally will surpass 500 million this year, and by the end of 2012 there will be 200 million NFC-equipped devices in the hands of consumers.  Moreover, it also maintained that it sees apps continuing to play a huge role in the mobile market, with the number of available apps set to top 2 million later this year.

Almost three-quarters of consumers spend nothing on apps

More recently, a survey conducted by ABI Research reported that more than 70% of app users spend little to nothing on apps, while the highest 3% of all spenders account for nearly 20% of the total amount spent.
