For those of you loyal readers who have been following and reading my blogs.... you no doubt noticed my propensity to provide you with industry and market statistics and information.

Cell Phone Bathroom - IT in the Toilet

Keeping with this tradition, I came across a study - IT in the Toilet conducted by 11 Mark "View Infographic"... according to this report, we shouldn't be surprised if we hear a toilet flush in the background while on the phone with friends or colleagues; as a whopping 3 out 4 in America use their cell phones while in the bathroom.

Approximately the same number of men and women have used the phone in the bathroom, according to a survey of 1,000 Americans... although men seem more tethered to IT in the toilet: 30 percent of men versus 20 percent of women agreed with the statement, "I don't go to the bathroom without my mobile phone."

Since only 14% of respondents reportedly cleanse their phones after a toilet session...  I would highly recommend protecting both their devices and ultimately themselves with iSkin protective accessories' revolutionary  Microban technology.  Built-in to products during the manufacturing process, Microban antimicrobial product protection inhibits the growth of microbes such as bacteria, mold and mildew that can cause stains , embarrassing odors and deterioration of both cell phones and other mobile devices.

Check out the following video for in-depth information on Microban iSkin protective cases and skins.

More than half the surveyed users (63 percent) said they have answered a phone call in the bathroom, and almost half (41 percent) reported initiating a phone call. That's not all, however: What goes on behind the walls of the stalls is anything a mobile phone is capable of. Sixty-seven percent said they have read a text, and 39 percent have surfed the Web. Men work more from the bathroom—20 percent said they have participated in work-related calls, versus 13 percent of their female colleagues.

As expected, Gen Y respondents are the pacesetters in the "mobile everywhere" movement, with 91 percent using their phone in the bathroom. Still, older generations are not far behind. Eighty percent of Gen X reported using the phone in the bathroom, as did 65 percent of Baby Boomers and 47 percent of the Silent Generation.

While online, they are doing more than just surfing; 16 percent of Gen Y report they have made an online purchase while in the bathroom.  The study indicates that 87% of Droid users (Motorola Droid RAZR, Samsung Galaxy S 2, HTC Amaze, LG Optimus 2X) and 84% of Blackberry users (Bold 9900 Touch, Bold 9790 , Curve 9370) followed by  77% of iPhone users are particularly likely to browse and buy in the bathroom – 22 percent have made a purchase, versus 10 percent of Americans with mobile phones overall.

"The writing is on the stall," said 11mark principal Nicole Burdette. "This study confirms what we all know: that the last private place is no longer private."

  • Electronics retail giant Best Buy wants to get into the cell-phone broadband service. It plans to launch Best Buy Connect brand that will allow store-branded mobile services along with the products it sells. This was posted in the Wall Street Journal, and according to reports, Sprint will be making this foray of Best Buy possible.

The company has already started circulating advertisements. According to the advertisement, cell phone broadband services will start at $29.99, for 250MB of data service, without a contract. The high-end plans include data services of up to 5GB, at a monthly rate of $59.99. Service contracts with lower rates will also be made available. There will a $35 activation fee, but this can be waived, if the user signs for a two-year contract. Another offering by Best Buy is that customers will be given RewardZone points, which they can build up, and use for discounts and other promotional offers at Best Buy.

Reports state that this will not be a full-fledged service, and will be limited to a small segment of devices sold by Best Buy. Laptops equipped with the Qualcomm Gobi chipset will be able to make use of this service. The Gobi chipset laptops can roam on either CDMA or HSPA networks.  The service will not provide 4G broadband services, but only 3G.

This move by Best Buy is a strong, logical extension into its endeavors in cellphone broadband services and products. If Best Buy can both sell a 3G laptop and also provide the broadband service, its profit margin will be huge and unprecedented.

Best Buy is looking forward to launching this service as soon as possible. It will be a huge step forward by Best Buy in extending its annual revenue income. As for us, we can only wait and see if this venture is worth it or not.

  • Some time ago it was announced that Samsung would release its latest mobile device in the market. Today, it has also been announced that this new mobile will be made available in US through AT&T. If you are planning on getting your hands on the Wave, you will just be in time for the world cup as a new game has been released for the Wave called Kickball AR Juggling. Powered by the Bada operating system, Kickball AR Juggling is the perfect augmented reality game that you need to keep pace with the current World Cup happening in South Africa. In this game, you can make use of the entire display screen to juggle the ball virtually with your legs. All you have to do is to simply point the camera at your feet, start the game and start juggling.

Even if this game is not meant for you, we are sure that you will be able to find something on the Samsung Wave that is suited to your needs. Considering the fact that it is to be fitted with a screen having a 3.3 inch display and a Super AMOLED display, meaning that you can take it out directly in sunlight, you might want to purchase this device. At the same time, there is a screenresolution of around 480 X 800 pixels which is very bright, even under bright lights. The Samsung Wave will be the first mobile phone to run the latest operating system, the Samsung  Unlocked (Bada). Through this platform, it will become possible for developers to create and share their own applications. In fact, Samsung predicts that the Bada will eventually convert feature phones into smartphones. Apart from this, the Wave will also include a 3.5mm jack for headsets, a 5 MP camera and the option of expanding storage capacity till 32 GB.

  • It was recently announced that the text CS service of Cellular South would be made available to all Advance Pay and unlocked smartphone subscribers. Through this service it would become possible for customers of Cellular South to ask any questions to representatives through text messages. Suchquestions would then be answered by the representatives, again through text. Says a representative of Cellular South, “We make it a point to answer any queries a customer might have via text within 5 minutes of receiving it. Should the answer be such that it cannot fit into the 160 character limit of an SMS, we immediately call up the customer to provide a solution to his problem. We might even decide to move the customer to another resource we feel would be able to better serve him. Our text services are available five days a week from Monday till Friday during work hours. This text representative- customer service is really an extension to our previous groundbreaking online Discover Stores through which users could gain access to various knowledge bases and fast customer assistance. We are also planning on introducing a ‘Do not text and drive’ message in all our communications to spread awareness about the dangers of texting and driving.”

In the past, such text based services of asking various questions to representatives was only available to HTC users that had the HTC Unlocked Hero. Although such a service has still not been implemented by Cellular South on Blackberry’s, you can expect in near future a similar mechanism. Considering the fact that text messaging has now become the way of life for most users all over the world, it is not at all surprising to find that some carriers are extending such services to even their representatives to aid users. In fact, through such text messaging, it is much easier to get a point across and to answer customers directly.

  • If you are the user of any unlocked mobile device having an AMOLED screen, you too would face certain problems when trying to use the phone in direct sunlight. In other words, it is nearly impossible to read anything on phones such as the HTC Desire that makes use of an AMOLED screen. In a view to combat this downfall of AMOLED screens, Samsung has recently released their new Super AMOLED screens that are not only much thinner, but at the same time can also deliver a much brighter and crispier image when directly held in the sun. Samsung conducted a recent test to determine which was better; whether it was the regular AMOLED display or the Super AMOLED screens releasing a video that pitted two mobile phones against each other, the HTC Desire that had a regular AMOLED screen and the Samsung Galaxy S that had a Super AMOLED screen.

The 7 minute long video shows both devices having their brightness at maximum and the position of the phones is switched around so as to ensure fairness. Under direct sunlight, the HTC mobile is practically worthless as it is nearly impossible to see anything apart from the big clock display on the screen. On the other hand, the Unlocked Samsung Galaxy S Super AMOLED screen had a much clearer display, allowing users the ability of seeing nearly perfectly.

Although neither display would require any backlight, thereby prolonging the battery life of the phone, Samsung’s Super AMOLED screen fared better when it came to color saturation and contrast of the two screens. Considering the fact that the Galaxy S has an incredibly large 4 inch screen, it makes sense to have it equipped with a Super AMOLED display having better clarity. Apart from the display of the Galaxy, the phone will support enhanced graphics and be powered by a 1GHz processor.

  • FCC goes spectrum hunting
Posted on June 10, 2010 by Pure Mobile

It has been rumored that the FCC is now hunting for more mobile broadband spectrum so as to make it available to a greater number of providers within the next 10 years. As part of its efforts to make sure that 500 MHz spectrum will be made available for the mobile broadband in 10 years, 300 MHz is stated for availability within the next 5 years.

A public notice issued by the Commission has allocated 35 MHz of the Big LEO band specifically for mobile broadband use. This 35 MHz spectrum currently sits between 1675 MHz and 1710 MHz and is mainly used for satellites as well as water balloons. According to the issued notice, the comment period has been set for 28th June and seeks comments on the current usage of this spectrum. This new effort combined with the freeing up of 25 MHz of spectrum last month, has been seen as part of a much wider plan by the Commission to free up greater amounts of broadband spectrum. The previous 25 MHz was opened up in the 2.3 GHz band.

Apart from addressing this freeing up of broadband space, the former head of the FCC's national broadband plan task force, Blair Levin said, “We all have the gift of broadband and as such, in just 10 years, we will not be so worried about Title I and Title II.” This was in reply to the issue of contentious broadband reclassification that was soon going to be explored by the FCC. A new legal strategy was being implemented by FCC Chairman Julius Genachowski that would allow neutral regulations for wired as well as wireless networks. This is essentially a way for reclassifying broadband from a Title I information service to a Title II common-carrier service.

The overall expansion of the broadband mobile spectrum has been cheered on my many carriers as it will allow them greater coverage areas.

  • When we heard about the recently announced Samsung Galaxy S we knew it was going to have some serious power but were just unsure about how much power this device would actually have.  After some mobile device testers got their hands on the new Samsung Galaxy S it is becoming more and more clear just how powerful this phone actually is.  Thanks to its PowerVR SGX540 GPU the Galaxy S has the power to push 90 million triangles per second.  Compare that to the Snapdragon platform which manages a mere 22 million polygons and the iPhone 3GS’s 28 million from the earlier SGX535 you can easily see what kind of power the Galaxy S is actually packing.

    Samsung Cell Phones

Of course the number of polygons that you can push per second is not everything when it comes to graphical power it is certainly a giant part of the equation.  With the announcement of Galaxy S having such increased graphical power over its competitors this is sure to start a new war among mobile device companies.  It will be interesting to see where these mobile device companies take this new technology and how they expand on it and improve it.

Cell phones are becoming remarkable gadgets these days and it appears the Samsung Galaxy S is just another link in the chain.  With its supposed superior graphics it will be interesting to see how the Galaxy S is received in the market place and how the rest of the phone’s functions are viewed by consumers.  If Samsung took as much time enhancing other aspects of the phone as they did with the graphics then the Galaxy S is sure to be a huge hit amongst mobile phone consumers.
