  • Logitech was recently seen hiring Android developers for what they described as a ground breaking upcoming release. While it is not currently clear whether or not this is the groundbreaking release they referenced, the company is releasing a new Squeezebox app for Android users such as unlocked Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, LG Eve GW620, etc  that will allow users to remotely control their Squeezebox. The app will utilizes a Wi-Fi connection and will allow users to use all of the usual controls that were not previously available in remote format.

The app will also utilize the album artwork for whatever music you are playing at the current time. It will be interesting to see if htis is the groundbreaking release that they previously referenced. The app will only be available for Android 2.1 or later. The app will reportedly work with the Squeezebox Touch, Squeezebox Boom and Squeezebox Duet.

The app is already available in the market, and more details can be found on the Logitech website, outlining all of the different uses that are included in the application. A full description is available there as well. It is good to see Logitech releasing applications for the Squeezebox which is a device that has received a lot of press over the course of the last few months, and many users were eagerly awaiting the release of an official remote app, since the device primarily works as an end-table music provider.

Now Logitech fans can start speculating about the hiring of the android developers. The description of the job on their website seemed to suggest a much larger project than a simple remote app, but the company has not had many releases within the Android market so this could be the project that they were referencing after all. Logitech will probably not publicly address the issue, especially if this is not the project that they were referencing.

  • N64 Emulator Arrives on Android
Posted on March 8, 2011 by Pure Mobile

Emulators technically exist in a grey area, legally, but they have been present on Android for quite some time. There are many different emulators that are currently available on the Android such Unlocked Samsung Captivate i897, HTC Desire, etc. , starting with the original Nintendo and going all the way up through the original Playstation. Absent from the Android market was an emulator that most had been waiting anxiously for - a Nintendo 64 emulator. That has finally been addressed by the same person who was behind the creation of previous emulators, going by the name yongzh.

The emulator will require that you have a fairly powerful device in order to run the app, but so far it looks as if everything works as you might expect. Technically, you are supposed to own the N64 cartridge when downloading the ROMs, but of course this is an issue that is overlooked.

The touchscreen only handsets will allow you to control all of the game exclusively from the touchscreen. It might be a little hard for you to control them as well as you could with a controller, but nonetheless this should open up a lot of different games for use on your Android devices. It is a bit surprising that an N64 emulator has not made its way to Android devices previous to this.

Right now, the emulator will only cost around $6, which seems to be a fair price. You might want to look around and see what games you can find prior to downloading the emulator. Also keep in mind that these emulators exist within a legal grey area. Eventually, this issue could be addressed, especially because the emulators are not being made available for free, and instead rquire that you pay for them. Bring back memories when the N64 ruled the land of games.

  • LG enV Pro Not Cancelled
Posted on November 16, 2010 by Pure Mobile

According to a leading unlocked cell phone blog, the released of LG enV Pro may actually not be cancelled.  Instead, the delay of this possible new phone is probably just delayed.   Many people will be relieved to hear this news because many people speculated that it would just be cancelled completely.  The LG enV Pro, in case you already did not know, is the latest incarnation of LGs line of dual-screen clamshells for Verizon.  It would be the first with Android, if it does in fact get released at some point.

Rumors have it that this phone may actually get released sometime in January, but we all know how rumors are.  If they are right, then several people will be happy to get their hands on this.  This phone will also already have Android 2.2 installed, so that is some more good news.  Several people speculate if the delay to get this phone released was to give LG the time it needs to toss Éclair and get the Froyo built.  This definitely seems to be the case to me, but you would think that they would make it more known that it was not cancelled, especially since many people were worried and thought that was the case.  You would think that they would put out some type of statement saying that there would just be a short delay for the phone being released than letting people worry and make such speculations.  You just never know what some companies are thinking.

In a couple months, people should be expecting to see these new phones in stores.  I am sure more information will be released in the coming weeks, so you should make sure to be on the look-out for that.  From there, you should be able to make a decision on if the phone is worth it.

  • Android 2.1 Comes to Motorola CLIQ
Posted on November 11, 2010 by Pure Mobile

Android 2.1 is finally being offered for the Motorola Cliq. The version of the popular operating system that is just now finally being offered for the phone first was released on January 5th of this year. At the time, Motorola said that the upgrade would be offered for the phone at some point, but did not give a timeline for when they were going to roll it out. At the time, it seemed as if many users were expecting the upgrade in a fairly timely fashion. A number of other unlocked cell phones quickly offered the upgrade including the Google Nexus One, a comparable phone that did not receive the upgrade until the 11th of January.

Nearly an entire year later, the Motorola Cliq will finally be receiving the upgrade that users have been expecting. It is strange that it took them so long to roll out the upgrade for the Cliq. The logical explanation is that Motorola’s focus has shifted so far away from the dated phone that they were just never willing to dedicate the man power to ensuring that the upgrade was offered in a timely fashion.

It is not clear what exactly prompted them to offer the upgrade at this time. Perhaps it is the fact that they promised the upgrade to their users nearly a year ago? Would allowing users to pay for updates force the company to get these key operating system updates out to their customers is a feasible amount of time? At this time there really seems to be no clear answers, but the time it took for Motorola to offer the upgrade to 2.1 for the Cliq is a prime example of the neglect that older smart phones receive when technology has passed them by. Hopefully the company will be more prompt with their updates and upgrades in future phones, even when outdated.

  • The CEO and founder of Forrester research, George Colony recent said in a blog post that he thought that the CEO of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, was a “one trick pony” and that he thought that he was overrated in Silicon Valley. Colony claimed that the statement was made because Zuckerberg has been unwilling to change Facebook’s looks and functionality throughout the its history. It is true that Zuckerberg has been reluctant to make huge, sweeping changes in his interface, but with good reason; every time Facebook changes its layout and functionality a large portion of the user base complains about the changes through their status updates.

Throughout his blog post, Colony continues to take shots at Zuckerberg, claiming that he has the “raw material to be a great CEO,” but went on to say that Zuckerberg must first demonstrate that he can turn Facebook into the revenue generating machine that many feel that it should be. Facebook did not post a profitable quarter until several years after it was created, after the site implemented its current advertising system.

Colony seems to think that Zuckerberg should be willing to go out on a limb with his 500 million person user base and explore different ways of monetizing the site. Of course, this can be tricky, as we saw with MySpace where ads and functionality issues seemingly ran many of the users off of the site. Colony might be jumping the gun a bit with this blog post. Other revered CEO’s, such as Steve Jobs, had over a decade to prove how worthy they were to their companies and went on to develop some of the most game-changing ideas in the technology space.

It is strange that Colony would choose to criticize Zuckerberg so publicly, and seemingly toot his own horn. What is the point that Colony was attempting to make, and does he expect it to be well received by the younger generation in the tech community?

  • Apple vs Nokia – Pre-trial Hearing
Posted on November 9, 2010 by Pure Mobile

Many people expect it to be a long time before the many arguments between Apple iphone4 unlocked and Nokia over intellectual property ever get fully solved.  However, Espoo got an early ally in the form of the US International Trade Commission.  They said that early in this trial that “the evidence will not establish a violation” on Nokia’s part.  The USITC also went on to say that portions of some patients were invalid and others were really not infringed at all.  Several people know that the judge in this case between Apple and Nokia will most likely not make the decision on this case for another few months.  Most figure that it will probably not be decided until February or even later than that.  The judge also is not obligated for obvious reasons to take the US International Trade Commission’s side of the story.

Also, the USITC comments were only directed at four of the several patents that Apple has against Nokia in a variety of cases.  Not only does Apple have beef against Nokia, but they are also wielding charges against HTC and Motorola.  Pretty rough, right?  If this is true that the USITC only is taking the side of Nokia on four of the patents, and there are actually a lot more than four patents against Nokia, then we can assume that this case will run on for a very long time.  As mentioned above, many people expected that this case would already run on for a long time; February was the estimation, but with there being so many different patents against Nokia, I guess we will never really know.  This could drag on for a lot longer than February in my opinion; it all depends on how long they want this to last.  We will keep you updated on the situation.

  • Google's popular Google Maps service is under fire.  While many appreciate the service because they can view actual images of areas they are traveling to, the Street View cars are said to have come across very sensitive personal data that if used, could leave the population at risk.  These Google Maps applications are available for use on all Google Android phones.  While some believe this security breach should be charged with hefty fines for unlawful acts, the Federal Trade Commission feels differently.  After Google admitted they did accidentally steal passwords, emails and personal information of Google Android unlocked cell phones users, the FTC chose to drop the matter and not to issue any exorbitant fines.

The stolen data Google came across has been investigated by the FTC.  Earlier in the week, Google did confirm that their Street View cars used to capture images for their popular Google Maps service did come across passwords and sensitive information.  This public breach of security was completely unintentional and after a serious investigation, the FTC did not find reason to fine Google for this unintentional and unlawful act.  Google has made promises to the FTC that all data that was inadvertently stolen will be destroyed and will not be used in any way.  Because Google has made written assurances, they will not use the sensitive data now or in the future; the FTC has closed the investigation.

With the commitments made to the FTC, Google is said to have dodged a bullet that could have significantly affected their earnings for 2010.  While the Street View car debacle was completely by accident, some consumers are still concerned their information may be at risk.  With the inquiry being closed, consumers can rest assured that all sensitive data obtained will be safe and they have nothing to worry about.

  • Netflix and Nintendo Wii™ users have just been treated to some good news from the companies. Starting immediately, subscribers in both the US and Canada will be able to stream content directly from their Wii consoles, provided that Netflix has been installed onto their Wii menus. This puts an end to the system of having to use a Netflix disc for instant streaming from the console.

Members who have the minimum $8.99 subscription ($7.99 in Canada) will be allowed to have TV shows and movies streamed directly to their TVs provided they have broadband Internet connection and a Wii console. All that is required is for users to download Netflix from the Wii Shop Channel, which remains on the Wii menu at no extra cost and makes it convenient for rapid access.

Reggie Fils-Aime, the Nintendo of America President, has enthusiastically welcomed the development as it comes during a time of the year where family entertainment is so highly sought after. This natural desire for family entertainment, coupled with the increased convenience and speed of the streaming will continue to further bring families to together in even more ways than before, he says. With the increase of users and subscribers of both the Wii and Netflix respectively, he believes the system could not have a come at a more appropriate time.

His views are shared in particular by Netflix CEO and the co-founder Reed Hastings, who believes which due to the increase of popularity of streaming through the Wii. The improved convenience of streaming directly from the Wii menu is a welcome evolution in their efforts to constantly improve their overall service to customers.

The addition of the Wii Shop Channel also allows for extra games, shows, and information to be accessed just as easily, while the parental control feature will continue to allow parents to modify material accessed by their children.
