Google Not So Open – Changes on the Horizon?

By Megan Fleet

Every brand and company has its shtick, its M.O., its press friendly sound bytes. Google is no different when espousing the virtues of its Google Android operating system at each event they are able to use a soapbox and spread their smartphone evangelism. The main gospel is the Android culture of openness and the lack of limitations is to the benefit of the consumer.

Google Not So Open – Changes on the Horizon?

This is great PR spin. And this writer truly loves a good euphemism laced with truth. So, while Android is more open that its competitors, it is comparative. When held up to open-source software like Linux, it is actually quite closed. Hence, a Hollywoodesque Benniffer moniker is bound to catch: Clopen.

At the moment, Google makes the Android OS source code available to companies and individuals to customize to their liking. Very open and transparent, non? Flip side of this coin is the Google mobile suite: Gmail, Android Market, Google Maps, and the long list of “Google” stamped functions. These are closed sourced. The double talk is confusing for customers. Especially when end users purchase a no-Market Android device. Not good PR.

Throw in the custom skins and fragmentations used by the varied carriers and manufacturers and there is a varying standard of quality for the smartphones bearing the Android and Google names. This is damaging to a brand. In fact, Marketing Land’s Danny Sullivan wrote that these quality control discrepancies are resulting in customers with outdated devices in their hands. This particular quirk can be addressed with accessories (protective cases, upgraded screen skins etc), but what is under the hood is harder to resolve.

Google Not So Open – Changes on the Horizon?

Case in point: the latest Android OS release, Ice Cream Sandwich. Various manufacturers have hedged and speculated about when the update would be available and on what phones and what carriers (at least with an unlocked phone, the customer will have more say in to get the latest Android OS). As of right now, only one physical device has the update on it. The flagship Android phone, Galaxy Nexus. Newer devices like the DROID RAZR, DROID Bionic, and the Rezound should see the update later in 2012, but there are many others like the LG Revolution (launched only 7 months ago) that will never get the ICS upgrade treatment because of the carrier (please see above note about unlocked phones!).

Luckily for customers, the Open Handset Alliance which encompasses major US players (LG, HTC, Motorola, T-Mobile, Verizon, Sprint, and AT&T to name a few) which has pledged with Google to bring an end to fragmentation and bring the latest Android OS to devices if the smartphone release is 18 months old or younger.

NFL Mobile Available Now on Verizon Wireless

As it was promised a few months back Verizon Wireless’ now exclusive NFL Mobile app is available for download in advance of the NFL Draft on April 22.  The app is currently available for 13 different smartphones and 3G feature phones including the Motorola Droid, HTC Droid Eris, BlackBerry Storm 2, LG enV Touch and more.  The app is free for the entire 2010 NFL season as long as customers download it before the postseason begins in early 2011.

The new NFL Mobile app will have a variety of features that include live streaming of Sunday Night Football on NBC and the Thursday Night Football games aired on the NFL Network.  The app for your unlocked cell phone will also offer preseason highlights from training camps including preseason games, a wide variety of stats, information, news and fantasy football data.  The app will also have live radio feeds from every regular season and playoff game.  It is also expected that later this year the popular NFL RedZone channel will come to the new mobile service which will allow customers to watch all of the NFL games whenever a team is in the red zone.

Sprint recently announced that the LG Rumor Touch will be available starting March 28th.  The cost of this new phone is set at $79.99 with a new two year contract and $50 mail in rebate.  The LG Touch is set to be one of the better cell phones on the market.  Specs for the Touch include a 3 inch WQVGA touchscreen, 2.0 megapixel camera and camcorder, microSD card slot supporting up to 32GB as well as Google search and 3G data capabilities operating on the Sprint EVDO Rec. 0 network.

LG Mobile Cell Phones
The LG Touch also offers access to Sprint Navigation, Sprint TV, Sprint Music and Sprint Mobile Email with personal and corporate calendar features.  With the initial launch of the LG Touch on the 28th the phone is set to be released in a blue color.  Two additional colors red and purple are set to be released starting April 18th.
The LG Rumor Touch has been one of the highly anticipated  phones in recent months.  With its full list of features the LG Rumor Touch is set to be a classic phone for anyone looking to purchase a new device on a budget.  The 3 inch touchscreen and 2.0 megapixel camera are more than enough power for the casual user while the mircoSD card supporting up to 32GB is a nice addition for even the power users.  With that sort of memory capabilities you will certainly be able to take a lot of pictures and videos to store on your phone while carrying around all of your music with you wherever you go.  I am wondering if LG plans to release this phone in any other colors besides blue, red and purple after the second set of phones are released on April 28th?

The Environmentally Correct LG Remarq

Sprint will now be carrying another environmentally correct cell phone.  The LG Cell Phone (Remarq) is primarily a messaging phone, which will also allow you to utilize many social networking features.  The biggest deal about this phone is that it is eco-friendly.  It is partially made from recycled plastic and the packaging that the mobile device comes in is mostly made from materials that are recycled as well.  To carry the theme on further, the charger is Energy Star.  We have seen an emergence of environmentally friendly phones, which also includes the Sony Ericsson Aspen unlocked cell phone.

It has all of the built-in accessories we use, such as the alarm clock calculator, notepad clock.  You will be able to send and receive instant messages and e-mail, as well as the ability to access any of your e-mail accounts.  The phone is available in dark silver, as well as turquoise.  Give you 5.5 hours of talk time and has a 320×240 QVGA screen with 262K of color resolution.  It should be available around May 9th.

The New LG Mini

LG has announced its new cellular phone, the LG GD880, also known as the LG Mini.  The cellular phone is perhaps one of the slimmest and tiniest touchscreen smart phones that you will be able to find.  Do not let its size fool you though, as it is loaded with many features.

This  LG cell phone is based on information it has gathered from actual users that are not pleased with the high priced and bulky phones that are around right now.  This phone is easy to keep in your pocket and comes with a great price.  It has that sleek and slim look as well.

LG Mini photos

It has textured metal trim that gives it that touch of elegance.  It has a 3.2 inch screen that goes to the edge of the phone.  The phone has fast web browsing and will keep you synched with all of your social sites like Facebook, Twitter and MySpace.  It also comes with a 5 megapixel camera.  It uses the HSDPA connection at 7.2 Mbps and has Wi-Fi.

It will also have the microUSB and will use the 2.1 Stereo Bluetooth.  It also has the video playback, MP3 player and FM radio.  The LG Mini has a microSD memory slot and has 100 MB of internal memory.  It uses the A-GPS real time locator as well.  It has all of those useful accessories like the alarm, calendar, to do lists, calculator and tasks.  You can voice record and it has a speaker phone.

We should begin to see this cellular phone be released sometime in March.  It will probably be released in the European market first.  Good news for the North American market though, you should be able to purchase the mini LG cell phone unlocked soon after its release.  It is promised to be an affordable phone; at least this is what LG is saying.  We will have to wait until March to find out.
