  • What to expect from Apple's new iPhone
Posted on September 5, 2012 by kduggan

Name: You can almost bet the farm that the new name will be iPhone 5. The only other contender would be the “New iPhone”, following in the tradition of the “New iPad.”

Design: A slimmer, longer, but not as wide, case. A two-toned color scheme. Possibly a metal back like the original iPhone.

Screen: A four-inch screen with a different aspect ratio than the 4S. A 640x1,136-pixel-resolution screen would allow an extra row of icons on the home screen. This would provide apps with extra screen space above the virtual keyboard, and a better fix for HD videos in landscape mode.

Dock connector:  A completely new 8-pin connector that will take up less space than the old 30-pin that’s been in use forever. The downside of losing that 30-pin dust collector - the old accessories and cables will be obsolete. Let’s hope Apple provides an adapter.

Connectivity: 4G LTE has got to be a certainty. Apple did it for the New iPad, and lack of 4G LTE wireless has been a big beef of even the most loyal Apple fans.

Processor: A couple of alternatives here. A quad-core A6 processor be a more advanced CPU than what's in the third-gen iPad’s A5X processor (with a dual-core CPU and quad-core graphics). The new iPhone might possibly have a smaller A5X processor with the same power but more compact design.

iOS 6: Many older Apple devices will get the iOS 6 upgrade, but Apple has also indicated that a few features like the new Maps app’s turn-by-turn navigation will only be available on the latest iPhone and iPad models.

What the iPhone 5 probably won’t have:

    • NFC might not be possible with the slimness of the case
    • Expect only minor camera upgrades. Apple has made significant camera improvements in the last three iPhone models. Look for smaller tweaks like multiburst or a better flash.

Other rumors have the iPad Mini or new iPods making their debuts alongside the iPhone 5. Don’t bet on it.  Apple will want to get as much mileage out of the buzz with multiple new product announcements. The latest talk on the street has an iPhone launch in September, and an iPad Mini launch in October.

    Wells Fargo loves Apple

One of the biggest banks in the world, Wells Fargo, has confirmed that the Apple stock deserves the “Outperform” rating and said that the next-generation iPhone “will be the biggest product launch in consumer electronics’ history.” We’ve heard that before.

And Apple rarely fails to disappoint consumers, reviewers or the investment community. The fall release is definitely going to make big news. iPhone 5 and the new iOS together are sure to create a feeding frenzy among new and old iPhone device owners.

Market research firm Strategy Analytics forecasts that worldwide smartphone shipments will have grown by 38% from one year ago. They also caution that the rate of growth might not be sustainable in the short term due to global economic troubles.

Smartphone market growth expected at 38% in Q2 2012 4G LTE and Apple main catalysts

The Strategy Analytics report did state that it expects smartphone shipments to bounce back later in the year. Both the Apple iPhone 5 and iPad 3 along couple with devices having 4G LTE connectivity should fuel new growth. Strategy Analytics called LTE “the industry’s most important segment” and predict that 4G LTE smartphone shipments will rise tenfold in 2012.

Apple has extended its deal for exclusive access to Liquidmetal (for use in consumer electronics equipment) for two more years. This could mean the rumors are true that this incredibly tough metal alloy might be used as the casing material for the iPhone 5.

Liquidmetal is all Apple’s for two more years

So far, Apple has only used Liquidmetal for the SIM ejector tool for their iPhones and iPads. It could be that this is Apple’s way of testing the material and the manufacturing process together before committing to its use in a component as critical as the iPhone’s case.

It could also mean that we are seriously over-thinking this one, and Apple just likes the Liquidmetal ejector tools.

Apple iPhone 5 Cases and Accessories

It looks like Apple’s new iPhone 5 will be on the market in September or October 2012. From the rumors we’ve heard, it’s packing some big changes as well as improvements.   iLounge’s Jeremy Horowitz has published a couple of pictures of what the new iPhone might look like. They’re a great comparison between the new and the old.

I have observed the following 3 signs of an impending iPhone 5 market release:

    1. It seems that the black iPhone 4 stocks are low... similar to what we saw a few months ago with the diminishing white iPhone 4 stock levels.   Rumor has it that Apple has instructed dealers to provide customers with comparable iPhone 4S replacements.  Just like how the launch of the iPhone 4S meant the end of the iPhone 3G, the launch of an iPhone 5 would mean the end of the iPhone 4 and a price markdown for the iPhone 4S.
    2. Apple moves to acquire 'iPhone 5' domain name: While iPhone 5 rumours have been circulating since November last year, Apple has now decided to file a claim with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in order to get the domain iPhone 5.com. The complaint (Case number: D2012-0951) popped up on WIPO’s website just this week.
    3. Service providers along with other vendors such as Tiger Direct and best Buy slashes price of iPhone 4S & 4: Target is now discounting new iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S by $50 with a two-year contract. This brings the new prices in-store for the iPhone 4 8GB to $50 and the 4S 16GB to $150 (both AT&T and Verizon).

Please share other signs you think possibly hint to an impending iPhone 5 announcement in the comment section below.

View the following video for complete rumours on iPhone 5 specs and release date

The launch of the iPhone 5 will also drive lucrative after market accessories sales, where, brands like Incipio, Griffin, iLuv, who are all vying to be first to market with new cell phone accessories specially designed for the new iPhone 5.

While brands like iSkin and Incase continue to perfect their accessories which traditionally results in a typical 2-4 week delivery after the iPhone 5 is launched.

One thing remains sure... only those online accessory re-sellers, like Pure Mobile which has established  strong strategic alliances with key accessory brand manufacturers will be best positioned to be first-to-market and provide consumers with the latest iPhone 5 accessories.

The word on the street it that the new iPhone will have a 4-inch display, and it will be taller and thinner than the current iPhone 4S. It looks like the back side of the case will have a metal pane. It doesn’t look like it will cover the entire back of the phone, so this might not be the final word.

To make room for its thinner case, the new iPhone will have a new design for its dock connector. Third-party accessory manufacturers will be all over that change. If Apple is going in the direction of a smaller and thinner dock connector, they might be on a mission to making the iPhone incredibly thin.

With this new design, Apple still needs to do something with the 3.5 mm headset jack. Maybe they’re planning to eliminate it and go with Bluetooth and AirPlay streaming features.

A Chinese website has published pictures that they claim reflect a working model of the sixth-generation Apple iPhone. The TGBUS website posted a series of “iPhone 5” photos that they believe are authentic.

    iPhone 5 Preview Leaked

The device in the pictures matches the hardware described in previous leaks. These photos look like they’re as close to the real thing as anything else that we’ve seen so far.

As far as their source, the Italian phone blog iPhoneItalia has discovered that these pictures are 3D renderings created and posted by a Flickr user.

    iPhone 5 Preview Leaked

Everything about these photos matches previous iPhone 5 rumors. The case is thinner than that of the iPhone 4S and iPhone 4. The device is also noticeably taller than the other versions - to this end, all new iPhone accessories for the iPhone 5 would have to be designed to fit a rumored 4.08 inch display. Don’t get too excited yet... as none of the dimensions can be verified from the photos.

The cases for both the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S are longer than the one shown in these pics - by a few millimeters in each direction beyond the wrap-around antenna. These pictures show a case that barely extends beyond the width of the antenna. There’s a smaller dock connector, a relocated audio jack, new speaker grills, a larger camera lens and an LED flash. The backside of the case shows a two-tone rear cover that appears to be aluminum and glass. The antenna matches this in color.

Leaked images of what is supposedly the housing for Apple’s sixth-generation iPhone hit the Web last week. They show a taller, thinner aluminum case than the one currently used by the iPhone 4S and the iPhone 4. The case could accommodate a larger display – perhaps even one that measures a little over 4-inches diagonally.

In a note to clients, Ming-Chi Kuo, a KGI Securities analyst with a good reputation for getting his facts correct, outlined what he knows about Apple’s iPhone 5 plans. Here’s a summary of his knowledge of the iPhone 5 specs:

    • A 4.08-inch in-cell IPS panel screen with a display resolution of 1,136 x 640 and 500-nit brightness
    • A display that measures 50.9 millimeters wide by 90.3 millimeters tall
    • In-cell touch elements in its display.
    • An impressively- thin 7.9 mm case (the iPhone 4S's 9.3 mm)
    • A battery that is roughly the same capacity as the one found in the iPhone 4S
    • An HD-capable front-facing camera that has been moved from the left side of the earpiece to the center
    • An 8 MP sensor and a 5 element lens for the back camera that is similar to the 4S but with a larger aperture of f/2.2 (currently f/2.4) to improve the low-light performance

    The latest on Apple’s iPhone 5 - a thinner case and a 4.1-inch display

Some of this information was confirmed in previous reports by that The Wall Street Journal and Reuters.

Dispelling previous rumors about the display size, Kuo notes that Apple chose not to use a larger 4.3-inch display because it would require a larger battery and wouldn’t support comfortable single-handed operation. Apple has contracted Toshiba Matsushita Display, LG Display and Sharp to supply the new panels.

We’re only a week away from the WWDC conference in San Francisco, so we don’t have much longer to wait for a glimpse from Apple’s view of the world.  Recent reports suggest Apple’s next iPhone will launch in September or October along with a new iPad mini.

Digitimes website is reporting a couple more rumors about Apple’s next iReleases. Apple may be launching both the next generation iPhone and a new 10-inch iPad sometime this fall, possibly as early as September.

Digitimes also claims that Apple supplier Pegatron Technology has already landed orders for both the latest handset and the new iPad. We believe the report that the iPhone is coming. Since Apple just launched its new iPad three months ago, the iPad report may turn out to be too much to hope for. The website also claims that Foxconn will have the honors of putting together the rumored 7-inch tablet that we may be seeing as early as August.

When Apple launched the iPhone 4S there were plenty of bystanders that were disappointed that the latest smartphone was not the elusive iPhone 5. The silver lining is that this prolonged release has given plenty of fodder for the tech gossip mill as we all speculate if the next generation iPhone will be drastically different.

iPhone 5 vs iPhone 4 - Bigger Screen

Latest reports note that Apple’s upcoming device will be slimmer than the iPhone 4S and iPhone handsets and will also strut some new tech as well. The iPhone 5 may have a quad-mode chipset from Qualcomm that will work on all 4G LTE and 3G networks which has the implication of making this unlocked cell phone device more widely available across mobile carriers.

Giving credence to these details is a BGR exclusive last month that reported Apple’s intention to launch a completely redesigned iPhone in the fall. It will have an aluminum case and a rubber or perhaps plastic bezel that will protect and cover a new wrap-around antenna. Possibly more dependable accounts came from Morgan Stanley’s analyst, Katy Huberty, who noted that Apple sent a communication to clients last Friday. Those statements assured that Apple’s business will continue to grow even with a slowing demand for high-end smartphones. There is no question that the company’s strength is in its iTunes, iCloud and other proprietary technologies that marry customers so closely the OS platform.

    iPhone 5 Features Rumors

Included in Huberty’s comments was the mention of Apple’s next generation tablet, the iPad3 which is slated to launch at some point in the first half of the year. With traditional pricing strategy in play, the iPad2 will be lowered in cost to attract additional customers to the iOS platform and to Apple’s strength in the tablet market.
