Just a few weeks ago, we heard that Apple would probably be replacing Google Maps with its own version.  For a long time, Apple has been working on their own in-house 3D-equipped program, and trying to get it ready for the upcoming iOS 6. Now, the street has pictures to prove they might be close to getting it done.

We obtained  blurry photos has that supposedly show Apple's new iOS 6 Maps application running on an iDevice. (However, the pictures are such poor quality that they could also just be super close-ups of a Google Images screen shot.

Here are some of the details we’re hearing about the new app:

    • It features a refreshed user interface including a brand new navigation bar.
    • It may have a silver colored theme in iOS 6 like on the iPad.
    • The iPhone version of Maps will have a floating locate me button in the bottom left corner. To access 3D mode, peel back the lower right corner of Maps (just like the current version) and enable 3D mode. Switch in and out of 3D mode by tapping a 3D icon in the lower left corner.

Since 2009, Apple has acquired companies that could help them put together their own maps app including Google Maps' competitor Placebase, mapping company Poly9, and C3 Technologies, that specializes in 3D mapping.

Apple has already made moves away from Google Maps. In March, they started using OpenStreetMap, an open mapping service, with its iOS iPhoto app in place of Google Maps (after Google began charging businesses for access to its digital mapping services). Maybe that’s what they’re building  upon. The BGR photos allegedly showing Apple's iOS 6 Maps app look a lot like those provided by OpenStreetMap.

Here’s hoping Apple will give us a lot more information on its plans at the 2012 Worldwide Developers Conference, which starts on Monday, June 11.

It looks like Facebook is ready to expand its product offerings with something completely different – a smartphone. Facebook has reportedly hired a group of former Apple engineers to try again to build a Facebook-brand smartphone.

Facebook wants a phone of its own

The New York Times reports that the ex-Apple employees consist of former hardware and software engineers who worked on the iPhone 4S and one engineer who worked on the New iPad/ iPad 3.

Why are Mark and his publicly-traded company working on a Facebook phone again?  An anonymous source inside Facebook apparently told this to the Times, “Mark is worried that if he doesn’t create a mobile phone in the near future that Facebook will simply become an app on other mobile platforms.”

The Facebook smartphone rumor mill had been quite for some time, and a study conducted earlier this year found that most consumers wouldn’t be interested in a Facebook smartphone anyway. The previous rumor that Facebook was close to having its own phone apparently was greatly exaggerated.

The closest Facebook got to its own smartphone the last time was when HTC launched a pair of low-end smartphones with dedicated Facebook sharing buttons, but nothing near a Facebook-branded device.

During the San Francisco Small Business Week, Neal O'Farrell, executive director of Identity Theft Council, gave a speech that ought to worry anyone who uses a mobile banking app. According to O'Farrell, 8 in 10 mobile banking applications are flawed and do not provide adequate protection of user data. “There were more data breaches than U.S. residents last year and more cases of identity theft than just about all other crimes combined,” O’Farrell said. “You’ve got to wake up [and] protect yourself, even if you use a Mac,” he said, citing the massive Flashback virus that affected more than 600,000 Mac

Leaked iPod Touch parts suggest a 4.1-inch screen for the future

An electronics manufacturer released a set of pictures to MacRumors showing the front panel of what is supposedly the next generation iPod Touch.  Better yet, we know based on past experience that the iPod Touch and the iPhone of the same generation usually share the same screen size and resolution. Just maybe the next iPhone is going to have a similar screen?

Leaked iPod Touch parts suggest a 4.1-inch screen for the future

Twenty-four hours ago the word on the street was that the new iPhone would feature a 3.95" screen.  Now that MacRumors has gotten their hands on the leaked parts, everyone’s talking about a taller, 4.1-inch screen.  The viewable portion on the iPhone 4S is slightly smaller than the opening provided by the front panel, so that might explain the difference in the measurements.

If there are any fears about the future of a Job-less Apple, Apple’s VP of Industrial Design Jonathan Ive wants to put them to rest. In an interview this week with The Telegraph, Ive said that his most impressive work at Apple has yet to come. We’ll take him at his word. Jobs sure knew how to surround himself with an amazing team of talent.

Apple is rumored to be working on a number of products that could potentially reinvent its iconic designs. Among them are a smaller version of the iPad tablet along with iPad 3 accessories ;  a thinner MacBook Pro, as well as MacBook Accessories a high-definition television and a completely redesigned iPhonethat will launch this fall but for now get the latest iPhone 4S accessories.

Ive is one of the Apple leaders who helped make Apple become the most valuable company in the world.  Ive played a major part of the creation of more than a few of Apple’s superstars, including the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, and he says that Apple’s best work is yet to come. When asked by The Telegraph’s Shane Richmond which of his designs he will most likely be remembered for, Ive said,  ”That’s a really tough one. A lot does seem to come back to the fact that what we’re working on now feels like the most important and the best work we’ve done, and so it would be what we’re working on right now, which of course I can’t tell you about.”

The latest Apple buzz indicates that the next-generation iPhone will feature an upgraded high-definition 3.95-inch Retina display. Apparently Apple is still testing several new iPhone models, but at least one of the samples includes an upgraded 640 x 1,136-pixel Retina display that measures 3.95 inches diagonally. The current iPhone 4S has a 960x640 resolution and 3.5-inch screen.

With an aspect ratio of close to 16:9, the new Retina display is said to be the same width as the current model only taller. Apple is apparently considering adding a fifth row of icons to the home screen in a version of iOS 6.  This would probably be exclusive to the new iPhone since it will be the only one with a larger display.

This news contradicts last week’s reports from both The Wall Street Journal and Reuters, which stated that Apple had already placed orders for the new iPhone model with its new display panel suppliers. Panel orders could not yet have been placed if Apple is still testing display sizes.

It looks like Apple’s next iPhone will have a 4-inch display. The Wall Street Journal  has confirmed a number of earlier reports about the new  iPhone’s screen size, and as further confirmation that this is the final word, the paper also reported that the panel orders for the 4-inch screen have been placed with Apple’s suppliers- LG Display, Sharp and Japan Display.

Rumors on the new Apple’s screen size have been bouncing back and forth for awhile. One minute we hear a 3.5-inch prediction and the next it’s back to the 4.0-inch guess. It looks like the smart money was on a 4-inch screen. Remaining at the 3.5-inch size would have kept the iPhone essentially at the same screen dimensions as the iPhone 4’s that launched way back in 2010.

Apple's decision to go with the larger screen is, in part, a competitive response to Samsung’s next Galaxy smartphone model that has a 4.8-inch touch-screen. Samsung became the world's largest cell phone maker this year, and sold 45 million smartphones in the first quarter. Sales of the Galaxy phones outstripped the iPhone.

Some would say that it’s about time Apple increased the iPhone’s screen size. People want larger screens. We are getting used to using smartphones for things we once did on laptops - watch videos, create documents, and read maps. Other smartphone manufacturers have been moving towards bigger displays for quite some time.

According to Shaw Wu, an analyst at Sterne Agee, “a shakeup in the design of a larger-screen iPhone could go a long way in boosting its ‘wow’ factor, convincing fans to trade in their old iPhones for new ones. Not only do users pay for features, but they also pay for aesthetics and design. That's as important, or more important, than features. People love the current design -- but it's 18 months old."

It looks like Apple is making some adjustments to its current product inventories in preparation for the upcoming launch of the 6thgeneration iPhone.

Apple adjusting iPhone inventory in preparation For new product launch
According to Sterne Agee analyst Shaw Wu in a note to investors, Apple has reduced iPhone orders by between 20% to 25% from the 35.1 million units the company shipped in the first quarter of this year. Wu now expects shipments of between 26 million and 28 million. With the estimated 8.6 million iPhones already in the pipeline, Apple will have an iPhone supply of between four and six weeks in inventory.

According to Wu, “From our understanding, the reason for the reduction is not demand related but rather due to the upcoming 6th generation iPhone refresh likely in the September-October timeframe. It appears that APPLE is opting to be conservative with its suppliers to factor in a potential 2-quarter pause ahead of the refresh and also to manage inventory. We believe this helps explain why its June quarter guidance was somewhat more conservative.”

Apple adjusting iPhone inventory in preparation For new product launch

Wu also explained developments on the iPad front. He reported that Apple is finally increasing their new iPad build plans. Shipments of the device were previously held back due to the supply of its new Retina Display, and the situation has been “greatly improved with an additional supplier.” Wu believes that this will help Apple to better meet strong demand for its iPad3.

For the June quarter, Wu reduced his iPhone forecast from 28 million units to 27 million, and raised iPad shipment expectations from 14 million to 15 million units. Due to improved iPad profitability, Wu increased his gross margin assumption from 42.5% to 43.5% and forecasted $36.1 billion in revenue and $10.16 in EPS. He’s keeping his Buy rating on shares of Apple stock, as well as his $780 price target.

Apple Dominant Leading Force in Apps Download

Have you ever wondered if the - now commonplace nomenclature - of « app » was a derivative of « Apple »?  With the revolutionary concept of iTunes and its accompanying iPods, iPads, and iPhones, App and Apple have certainly been synonymous.  As the popularity of Apple products, devices, accessories, and everything in between continues to grow globally, it is no surprise that the company has announced a few landmark numbers to its adoring public.

Apparently Apple has been ramping up its AppStore, in a mere six times there has been an  increase of apps... from 425,000 in July to 500,000 this week.   More impressive is the number of those apps that have been downloaded. Since 2008, iOS users have downloaded over 18 billion apps. The 15 billion marker was hit in July, which indicates that the Apple momentum just keeps building up steam. At this rate, they are tracking to surpass 1 billion apps downloaded per month.   The popularity of accessories has been soaring likewise; discover the latest innovative protective solutions and premium electronic accessories from the industry's most leading brands.

In the words of the company itself, “Apple revolutionized the app industry with the App Store, which now has more than 500,000 apps and where customers have downloaded more than 18 billion apps and continue to download more than 1 billion apps per month.”

Apple Dominant Leading Force in Apps Download

Although less inspired , but not to be left behind, the Google Android Market now has 319,000 apps. This month the conglomerate also announced that they passed the 10 billion app download milestone. The expectation is that this competing purveyor of multi-tasking inducing apps will also average a rate of one billion app downloads per month.  This does have the potential to grow more exponentially than Apple because of Google Android’s greater distribution to smartphone device manufacturers and in turn being open to more markets with a greater choice of unlocked phones.  Enhance your mobility... turn your device into a power tool.  Discover the select accessories specifically designed to make your devices functionally efficient and performance rich

But as in any good industry competition, the consumers on both sides of the aisle will win with a greater choice of apps, more innovation, and feed our insatiable need for technology.
