    Firefox “Junior” for iPad

Great news for Apple iPad users that have been disappointed with their browsing experience...  they will  soon have a Safari alternative from Mozilla.

Mozilla just revealed a new version of its Firefox browser designed to give Apple iPad users an alternative to Safari. Mozilla calls its mini-browser “Junior.” As a Mozilla foundation representative describes Junior, “It makes browsing more fun, more ergonomic and re-thinks browser user experience from the ground up.”

Junior only provides two buttons on screen. These are placed where the iPad user’s thumbs go. The “back” button performs the standard back function. Pressing the “plus” button opens a new screen that lets users input a URL.

Mozilla is looking to provide a simplified browsing experience for the tablet environment. They’ve designed Junior to use the entire screen without cluttering it up with tabs and search bars.  Some iPad users may miss the on-screen tabs that are a staple of web browsers, but Mozilla has had to eliminate them to accommodate the tablet’s smaller screen size.

It looks like Junior really is a browser that’s designed for tablets, not just a stripped down version of its desktop or mobile browser. No word yet on when Mozilla will release Junior to iPad users.

The founder of one of Europe’s leading illegal movie-streaming sites confessed and apologized for his crimes and got his sentence cut in half by a German judge.  Deutsche Welle reported that 39-year-old Kino.to founder “Dirk B.” has been sentenced to 4.5 years in jail. He could have been ordered to spend 11 years in prison, but received a reduced sentence after confessing to his copyright infringement crimes.

Jail time and fines for Kino.to founder

Millions of eager viewers downloaded movies and watched them on the latest smartphones including the iPhone 4S, Samsung Galaxy2, HTC EVO

Many viewers also used tablets like the New iPad/iPad 3, Samsung Tab, Motorola Xoom and the HTC Flyer

Dirk B. will have to pay a $4.7 million fine to cover 1.1 million instances of copyright infringement. While in operation, Kino.to is estimated to have brought in as much as $8 million in advertising revenue.

Most recently, law enforcement officials in Sweden first raided The Pirate Bay in 2006, and the company’s founders were eventually sentenced to jail and forced to pay millions in fines. The service remained online, however, and it is still operational today.   “The Swedish district attorney Fredrik Ingblad initiated a new investigation into The Pirate Bay back in 2010. Information has been leaked to us every now and then by multiple sources, almost on a regular basis. It’s an interesting read,” The Pirate Bay said on its blog. “We can certainly understand why WikiLeaks wished to be hosted in Sweden, since so much data leaks there. The reason that we get the leaks is usually that the whistleblowers do not agree with what is going on. Something that the governments should have in mind – even your own people do not agree.”

Apple bows out of social network space With the demise of Ping

Apple who brought the world the successful products like iPhone 4S and iPad 3, will shut down its failed social network and music sharing service Ping later this year. Ping’s demise will be timed with Apple’s debut of its next major iTunes release in the fall. According to All Things D, Apple will pull the plug on Ping and focus its social networking efforts on Twitter and Facebook integration.

Apple designed Ping, in part, to keep iTunes users browsing in the iTunes store and encouraging them to regularly purchase more music. Apple launched Ping in September 2010, but Apple fans never got caught up in their usual Apple product frenzy. Apple tried a couple of times to remind users that Ping was the place for social music sharing, but it never caught on.

Microsoft’s ARM-friendly Windows RT operating system launches this fall, but Microsoft is going to make it very difficult for tablet makers to use it and still compete with Apple’s iPad 3 pricing.  Microsoft will reportedly charge tablet makers $85 to license each device that uses its Windows RT.

Microsoft to add $85 to the cost of tablet manufacture

VR Zone reported that Microsoft’s pricing was disclosed to them by a number of vendors during the Computex Taipei trade show. All claimed the price would be anywhere between $80 and $95. With that amount added to the cost of tablet manufacturing, ARM-powered Windows RT tablets could cost between $549 and $799. Premium products could be priced between $799 and $899.

Microsoft’s hardware and software strategy looks like it’s patterned after Apple’s. Both companies want control. Windows RT will come exclusively pre-installed in Windows on ARM devices (or WOA for short).

It will be strictly limited to WOA PCs built exclusively for Microsoft. Windows apps will only be made available only through its Windows Store.

Users of Apple’s Mac line of desktop computers are pretty disappointed by the lack of attention being given to the Mac Pro and the iMac at this week’s Worldwide Developer Conference.  The Mac Pro only received a minor spec update, and it even lost its designation as “new” in the Mac Pro online store. The iMac didn’t even see as minor an update as the Mac Pro’s.

Apple asks for patience – iMac and Mac Pro updates coming in 2013

Pre-conference rumors had suggested that both the Mac Pro and the iMac were in for some big changes, including a Retina-fueled refresh.

Apple the manufacturer of iPhone 4S and iPad3 seems to be making a big effort to quiet the mob that fears for the life of their desktop computers. One concerned user emailed Apple CEO Tim Cook who responded: “Our pro customers are really important to us...don't worry as we're working on something really great for later next year.”

Reports by Forbes and New York Times columnist David Pogue corroborated the news that Mac Pro and iMac updates are coming next year. The information was provided directly by an Apple spokesperson who said that new models and new designs of the Mac Pro, as well as the iMac desktop, are in the works and will likely be released in 2013.

Leaked images of what is supposedly the housing for Apple’s sixth-generation iPhone hit the Web last week. They show a taller, thinner aluminum case than the one currently used by the iPhone 4S and the iPhone 4. The case could accommodate a larger display – perhaps even one that measures a little over 4-inches diagonally.

    The latest on Apple’s iPhone 5 - a thinner case and a 4.1-inch display

In a note to clients, Ming-Chi Kuo, a KGI Securities analyst with a good reputation for getting his facts correct, outlined what he knows about Apple’s iPhone 5 plans. Here’s a summary of his knowledge of the iPhone 5 specs:

    • A 4.08-inch in-cell IPS panel screen with a display resolution of 1,136 x 640 and 500-nit brightness
    • A display that measures 50.9 millimeters wide by 90.3 millimeters tall
    • In-cell touch elements in its display.
    • An impressively- thin 7.9 mm case (the iPhone 4S's 9.3 mm)
    • A battery that is roughly the same capacity as the one found in the iPhone 4S
    • An HD-capable front-facing camera that has been moved from the left side of the earpiece to the center
    • An 8 MP sensor and a 5 element lens for the back camera that is similar to the 4S but with a larger aperture of f/2.2 (currently f/2.4) to improve the low-light performance

    The latest on Apple’s iPhone 5 - a thinner case and a 4.1-inch display

Some of this information was confirmed in previous reports by that The Wall Street Journal and Reuters.

Dispelling previous rumors about the display size, Kuo notes that Apple chose not to use a larger 4.3-inch display because it would require a larger battery and wouldn’t support comfortable single-handed operation. Apple has contracted Toshiba Matsushita Display, LG Display and Sharp to supply the new panels.

We’re only a week away from the WWDC conference in San Francisco, so we don’t have much longer to wait for a glimpse from Apple’s view of the world.  Recent reports suggest Apple’s next iPhone will launch in September or October along with a new iPad mini.

It looks like Facebook is ready to expand its product offerings with something completely different – a smartphone. Facebook has reportedly hired a group of former Apple engineers to try again to build a Facebook-brand smartphone.

Facebook wants a phone of its own

The New York Times reports that the ex-Apple employees consist of former hardware and software engineers who worked on the iPhone 4S and one engineer who worked on the New iPad/ iPad 3.

Why are Mark and his publicly-traded company working on a Facebook phone again?  An anonymous source inside Facebook apparently told this to the Times, “Mark is worried that if he doesn’t create a mobile phone in the near future that Facebook will simply become an app on other mobile platforms.”

The Facebook smartphone rumor mill had been quite for some time, and a study conducted earlier this year found that most consumers wouldn’t be interested in a Facebook smartphone anyway. The previous rumor that Facebook was close to having its own phone apparently was greatly exaggerated.

The closest Facebook got to its own smartphone the last time was when HTC launched a pair of low-end smartphones with dedicated Facebook sharing buttons, but nothing near a Facebook-branded device.

If there are any fears about the future of a Job-less Apple, Apple’s VP of Industrial Design Jonathan Ive wants to put them to rest. In an interview this week with The Telegraph, Ive said that his most impressive work at Apple has yet to come. We’ll take him at his word. Jobs sure knew how to surround himself with an amazing team of talent.

Apple is rumored to be working on a number of products that could potentially reinvent its iconic designs. Among them are a smaller version of the iPad tablet along with iPad 3 accessories ;  a thinner MacBook Pro, as well as MacBook Accessories a high-definition television and a completely redesigned iPhonethat will launch this fall but for now get the latest iPhone 4S accessories.

Ive is one of the Apple leaders who helped make Apple become the most valuable company in the world.  Ive played a major part of the creation of more than a few of Apple’s superstars, including the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, and he says that Apple’s best work is yet to come. When asked by The Telegraph’s Shane Richmond which of his designs he will most likely be remembered for, Ive said,  ”That’s a really tough one. A lot does seem to come back to the fact that what we’re working on now feels like the most important and the best work we’ve done, and so it would be what we’re working on right now, which of course I can’t tell you about.”

The British designer was knighted this week in London.

Ghost Recon Commander has an overhead viewpoint with social elements like players being given the option to team up with their Facebook friends to form alliances and complete missions. Games aren’t new territory for Facebook. The site is filled with social and casual games like AngryBirds and FarmVille. While Facebook followers have made these games incredibly popular, there haven’t been any titles to attract the hardcore gaming crowd. With the release of Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon Commander, Ubisoft wants to change that.
