  • Sprint’s CEO Dan Hesse has just confirmed that his company will carry Motorola’s Photon Q LTE later this year. The new 4G LTE smartphone runs Android Ice Cream Sandwich 4.0.4 on a 1.5 GHz dual-core processor. The Photon Q comes with a full slide-out QWERTY keyboard,  a 4.3-inch ColorBoost Display screen,  a rear-facing 8MP camera with 1080p video capture, and a long-lasting battery (thanks to Motorola’s Smartactions app.)

The new Photon Q is expected to ship with NFC capability to power the new Android Beam data transfer service and Google Wallet mobile payment services.

This Android slider phone with a full QWERTY keyboard is perfect for the business community that has long been looking for a reason to retire those worn out BlackBerrys. The Photon Q is the latest 4G with a physical keyboard smartphone, joining the ranks of the Motorola Droid 4, Samsung Captivate Glide and Samsung Epic.

Like other Motorola phones, the Photon Q LTE will be environmentally friendly and ULE-platinum certified.

Sprint hasn’t mentioned a release date or pricing information for the Motorola device, but the company expects to make these announcements in the coming weeks.

The owners of Samsung Galaxy S2 devices on the AT&T network have finally received Android 4.0, and Samsung promises not to take it away again.  Last week, a few AT&T customers reported that one minute they had access to the Ice Cream Sandwich update on their phone and the next they didn’t.

Yes, the Ice Cream Sandwich update is yours to keep For AT&T Samsung Galaxy S2 owners

Samsung apparently yanked the updates from the Kies app, saying they hadn’t finished their testing. Now it looks like Samsung has already put everything back in its place because users are reporting that the update is running smoothly again.

If you’d like to see what the ICS looks like on the Samsung Galaxy S2, check out the pictures posted in the XDA Developers forum.

T-Mobile Galaxy S2 users have been enjoying their ICS since June 12. We hope AT&T is done monkeying around with theirs.

The numbers, which are based on the number of Android devices that have accessed Google Play within a two week period (ending on 1st May 2012), show that just under 5% of all Android devices now run Android 4.0, of these, the vast majority run 4.0.3 or 4.0.4 rather than 4.0, 4.0.1 or 4.0.2.

Last December, Sony released an alpha Android 4.0 ROM... now they are regaling us with more ice cream sandwich goodness.  Sony has released the beta version of this ROM for select Sony Xperia devices

    Sony Xperia Arc S

While this update comes with much more functionality than its predecessor, it still lacks very important features.   Some of the more prominent added features include activated GSM modem, FM radio, updated UI, beefed up lock screen and a quick dialer.  Being able to access GSM networks is probably the most important, consumer utilizing this  ROM will now be able to make calls... precisely what phone is designed to do.

There are important features that are lacking, though, since Sony is still waiting for approval in order to activate them. Such include WiFi and Bluetooth connectivity, as well as access to Google Apps including the Android market. Hopefully Google will give them the okay soon, and Android 4.0 will be in the wild before too long.

This beta version is aimed at developers, as Sony does not intend this incomplete ROM to be used as a daily driver. Regardless, it could be fun for the more adventurous Android user to check out what Ice Cream Sandwich will be like on Sony hardware. If you happen to be the proud owner of an Xperia Arc S, Xperia Ray, or Xperia Neo V, this ROM is available for your flashing needs.

Verizon may still be blushing a bit from its “free” PR blurb on Saturday Night Live the other weekend for its convoluted explanations and advertising of its 4G LTE network.   Luckily for the telecommunications giant, Verizon is looking to get a bit more positive press this week with the Android 4.0.3 update whispers for its Motorola DROID RAZR. And based on the leaked images to date, the details on the new user interface are much needed improvement over the most recent UI images of the MotoBLUR.

Watch this video for additional insight on the Motorola DROID RZR ICS

If you compare the images between the two Motorola devices, it is clear that the handset manufacturer has done an overhaul. Resplendent with the much touted Android 4.0, most of the custom skin has been removed to better let the ICS Holo theme come through. Motorola has made its mark on the home screen and the app launcher. This translates into custom icons verses the stock Android 4.0 icons and additional functionality in the app launcher which permits the end user to sort applications by groups (something this writer has yet to figure out how to do on an iPhone). And, if you are really inclined to customize, there are any number of personality-sparking protective cases to pick from.

In going further than skin deep (pardon the double entendre), the OS of the DROID RAZR bears more marks of Motorola’s tampering of Ice Cream Sandwich. The settings, camera, and lock screen are all clearly marked with classic MotoBLUR aesthetics with stylistic touches from Android 4.0.

    Droid RAZR Verizon

With Google Android’s complicated, global web of manufacturers and distributors, the challenge is quite often “thanks for all the hype. Now where is my OS update?” So to properly set expectations, we checked the official Motorola Android 4.0 update list which still has the Verizon DROID RAZR update eligibility tagged as “under evaluation.” The international version of the handset is expected to get its update in the second quarter.

But, ever the optimist, there is still the chance that Motorola and Verizon will bring a tasty Ice Cream Sandwich DROID RAZR to the United States sometime this quarter. With good luck and even better planning Motorola could beat HTC to the punch and be the first vendor to push out an OEM update for Android 4.0

As always, with the plethora of carriers, unlocked devices, and mobile OS options now on the market, the world is your oyster to choose your next smartphone!

Google Android’s numerous handset manufacturers have made the mobile OS platform incredibly accessible to consumers across the world. The one downside is that each of these vendors goes through its own process to adopt the latest version upgrades. Some handsets are not capable of those major upgrades, like Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich.

Luckily for Sprint Nexus S 4G owners, the wait should not be much longer. An internal testing ROM was seen on Google’s servers that will update the Nexus S 4G to Android v4.0.4 build IMM26. Of course that file was pulled once it was seen, but the more curious of you can get a mirrored copy at xda-developers. But, with the removal from Google servers, it is likely better to wait for the official release.

The popularity of this device has customers of Verizon wishing it was available as an unlocked handset that could be used with their existing contracts. As LTE 4G becomes more mainstream across North America, the availability of smartphones capable of taking advantage of these speeds will increase. Carriers have been rushing to pair up with manufacturers to augment their product lines. The question of whether customers will be willing to pay the premium cost of these data plans.

    Samsung Nexus S 4G Detailed

The good news is that there is no requirement to utilize the 4G LTE capabilities until the costs are more accessible. In the interim, these customers have the good fortune of not having to purchase a new handset to get the Ice Cream Sandwich update which leaves more funds to invest in the must-have and secretly-covet accessories to make the most of your pocket PC.

As this report indicates, the version had release keys which denote a fast-approaching launch date. So far, the next gen Android platform has had great reviews, so be sure to keep your eyes and ears open for your Nexus S 4G update!

After the shock and awe of the Consumer Electronics Show last month, Samsung is bringing us a more mid-range mobile device that will satisfy those consumers  who want more functionality without shelling out the money for a brand-new, top of the line smartphone. So, without further ado we introduce to you the Galaxy S Advance a welcome addition to the Samsung Galaxy cell phone line.

The following is an insightful video review of the Samsung Galaxy S Advance by Mobile Gazette

Customers will experience a zippy interface that is quick to open apps and multi-task on. The specs are solid, if not stellar. 4 inch Super AMOLED display gives a great visual experience and the middle-of-the road RAM and internal storage are pretty standard.   There are no current plans to move the mobile OS from Android Gingerbread to Android 4.0, Ice Cream Sandwich.

Consumers can further enhance the Samsung Galaxy S mobility by optimizing aaplications with select accessories including stylus & pens, micro SD memory cards, batteries, docking stations, Bluetooth headsets, data cables and glider gloves all specifically designed to make your devices functionally efficient and performance rich.

As Samsung’s President of IT & Mobile Communications Division, JK Shin noted, “The GALAXY S Advance adds to the successful track record of the GALAXY  smartphone range with a phone that combines power and style with all the versatility of Samsung’s Hub services.” This particular group of services is what will give users over 11 million music tracks, 2.3 million e-books, 3,500 magazine and 200 newspaper titles which are both excellent reasons to invest in good headphones and speakers.

    Samsung Galaxy S Advance - GT i9070

For gamers, the ever-popular Game Hub puts thousands of catalogued games at users’ fingertips. As these may take up more juice, check the specs and requirements to see if a purchase of additional resources is needed.

And, in a move that will bring a more competitive offering to the new Nokia Windows Phone line, ChatON acts as a kind of people hub to interactively share content, group chat via video and voice and in general make messaging intuitive and easy. The last (and perhaps favorite) feature is Find My Mobile which is a unique lost-phone management system. Securing and encrypting data, ability to wipe the device data via Web or trace the device via Web is uber awesome.

All in all, Samsung looks to bring a best-of-both-worlds kind of phone to market and we look forward to seeing the smartphone in action!
