  • The growing popularity of mobile media through PC Tablets, Android Smartphones and even Apple's iPhones is allowing new methodology and movements is changing on how consumers are engaging and interacting with the media. Gone are the days of the Sunday morning newspaper being read at the breakfast table with a steaming cup of coffee in one hand and the business section in the other, gone are the days of the family gathering around the television to watch the five o'clock news while mom prepares dinner in the nearby kitchen. Today the media is mobile and so are the individuals accessing that media on a weekly, daily or even hourly basis. Media consumers can simply stay connected by clicking on MSNBC.com or CNN.com while we sit in a drive thru waiting for our morning Starbucks coffee; we're literally connected with the media at our very fingertips. With the our fingertip connection many publishers, media companies and application developers are eager to know whether they should optimize their content for particular devices, advertisers want to understand how these devices might eventually fit into their overall marketing plans and even online newspaper carriers such as the USA Today or even the Wall Street Journal want to evolve their business models in a multi-connection world. No one in the mobile media universe wants to be left behind in this ever changing digital expansion.

    Overnight we have literally become a world “addicted to their Smartphones, iPhones and PC Tablets.” Whereas most common usage of those particular devices tends to include socializing, downloading music, gaming, and surfing the event, researchers have slowly and steadily began to see changes even in the ways consumers shop for their groceries. According to IGD Research Corporation, 1 in 10 online shoppers are using Smartphones to shop usually comparing prices, bargains and brands and more than 15% of customer checkouts during the first half of the year came via their Smartphone applications. More than 66% of surveyors indicated claimed that more than 75% of Smartphone users such as HTC One S, BlackBerry Bold 9900, etc used their Smartphones for personal reasons and 69% of users used it for business purposes. In the United States consumers prefer to mobile browsers for banking, travel, shopping, local info, news, video, sports and blogs and prefer applications for games, social media, maps and music.


    Smartphone usage is now a part of our daily lives whether at home or on the go and businesses without a Smartphone presence may find themselves competitively disadvantaged. Some mobile media and businesses changes to watch and take note of include 74.1% of mobile subscribers used text messaging on their mobile device, while 50.2% used downloaded applications. Smartphone and other mobile users cannot necessarily be defined by age, gender, income or race; instead they can be defined by their members' shared behaviors. It's up to businesses and mobile media to understand the common behavior traits that unite the class makes members easy to recognize and underscores the influence and utilize how their consumers are communicating, consuming media and deciphering consumer shopping and spending habits. Because the mobile media trend including Smartphones, iPhones and Tablets isn't going anywhere anytime soon but those that don't adapt will collapse as the mobile world around them continually presses forward.

  • In March 2011, a prisoner at the Beaumont prison from which an inmate escaped with the help of a cellphone last year has one of Texas’ worst track records for prison personnel bringing cellphones into the facility. David Puckett, aged 27 years old was serving his fifth year of a 30-year sentence for aggravated assault of a public servant out of Lavaca County in Texas.

    Beaumont Prison Authorities haven’t said how they think Puckett obtained the smartphone he used to plan his breakout and meet up with a female admirer in Omaha, Nebraska where he was recaptured a little over week later.


    “There obviously is a big difference between an officer who is found with their personal phone in their front pocket because they forget to take it out, and an officer who has six phones and chargers taped to their stomach,” suggested an unnamed prison source.


    Data has shown that over the course of a 10 year period more than 1,100 instances in which Texas Department of Criminal Justice employees were accused of breaking prison system rules by bringing cellphones such as iPhone 4S, Samsung Galaxy S3, HTC One S etc or phone parts into prisons whether intentionally or accidentally. Some of those incidents include from the database: A chaplain at the Cotulla inmate transfer facility in South Texas tried to sneak in his cellphone inside his motorcycle helmet. A phone was found lying in a flower bed inside the secured area at outside Waco; another guard’s phone was found left in a bathroom at outside Huntsville. Even prison guards aren't' impervious because a lieutenant’s phone was found inside a boot when he left his uniform boots to be shined by an inmate at a prison north of Lubbock.


    Well since this most recent escape escapade it's become a felony offense here to supply an inmate with a cellphone or a cellphone component. Texas prison employees are also forbidden by rule from bringing personal cellphones into a prison at any time. Texas State has also added additional security measures by “in the process of installing hundreds of video surveillance cameras which will assist in our efforts and serve as a further deterrent to individuals who are considering smuggling contraband into the facility.”

  • A new study released by Nielsen indicates that mothers more commonly own smartphones, are active bloggers, and frequently use social media such as Twitter and Facebook. According to Nielsen, Fifty-four percent of moms now own a smartphone compared to 50.4 percent of all mobile subscribers in the United States.

    Other Nielsen studies are reporting that more than 68% of American Moms that moms use their smartphone like HTC One X, BlackBerry Bold 9790, etc, For shopping, 46% of moms also claim the most convenient time to receive information about a product is when they are in the store and another 62% of American Mothers use shopping applications to research or compare store pricing. Moms are using Smartphones from everything ranging from health and wellness to Social Networking such as Twitter and Facebook. Mom’s three top smartphone activities include reading social newsfeeds, updating their social status and d reading answers to posted questions.


    Some other interesting facts about moms and their Smartphones include:


    • 81% of moms said shopping was the #1 way they use their Smartphone.
    • Moms have an average of 13 applications loaded on their phones.

    According to Nielsen’s latest survey of mobile applications, 36 % of American consumers have a a Smartphone whether an Android or Apple Smartphone. Apple iOS (iPhone) and Google Android OS mobile phones represent the majority of the Smartphones market in the U.S. and 74 percent of mobile users who download applications. Apple iOS and Android OS Smartphones have more applications on their mobile phones than those with other kinds of Smartphones, with an average of 48 applications on iPhones and 35 applications on Android phones. More than 68% of of applications  download with iPhone 4S and 60 percent of those with Android phones reported using their mobile applications multiple times throughout the day.


    However, its important to note that Smartphones applications that are provided for free usage for both the Apple iOS and Android -want something in return, and the tradeoff often comes at the expense of users' privacy. It's important to be careful especially when it comes to dealing with free applications for either Apple Smartphone or Android Smartphones.

    "The presence of aggressive ad networks in mobile applications is one of the most prevalent mobile privacy issues today," said Lookout CTO Kevin Mahaffey in a recent interview. While technically that either application development firm was grabbing people's contact information for nefarious purposes, the wholesale transmission of people's address books in unencrypted format certainly did nothing to protect the privacy of users' data.     CyanogenMod 9 Release Candidate 1 finally available


    The CyanogenMod blog finally announced the release of its CM9, Release Candidate 1 starting with 37 different devices. The first wave of devices that will be receiving their RC1 build of CyanogenMod 9 ROM include the Samsung Galaxy Nexus, Motorola Xoom, Galaxy S2, Galaxy Note, ASUS Transformer and the HTC Sensation.


    Watch the list of devices that can benefit from the build get longer quickly. The team made this commitment via its CyanogenMod blog, “As we’ve mentioned before, this release serves as the first wave of RC1′s. With the ‘core’ OS stabilized, our device maintainers will continue to work on their device trees to bring up more devices, this includes some of the newer releases as well as some from the older generations; but we’ll save that for another day,” the team said.

    Android texting application Swype has been in the design phase for awhile, but its beta shows it has evolved into a sophisticated next-generation app with four-in-one keyboard and voice capabilities.

    Chief among the app's redesign is the option of using one of four kinds of keyboards:  traditional letter-to-letter swiping, while adding the ability to type with predictive text input, use an integrated Dragon button to speak the text, or rely on the old peck-and-hunt one-finger motion. Users can swap between any of the modes limitlessly.


    Swype’s new features also include next-word prediction that allows the app to build on historical usage, compiling every word a user enters in emails, texts, or other posts. Swype's 55 language downloads allow users to communicate in any language they can speak.  Swype can be installed on all Android based cell phones including the Samsung Galaxy S3, Samsung Galaxy S2 as well as HTC One X and Motorola Droid Razr 


    According to Michael Thompson, EVP and general manager for Nuance Mobile (the speech-recognition software building company that acquired Swype last October), "People use their keyboards every day in every way — so input needs to be fast and simple. The new Swype living, learning keyboard users in a new era of input, where the keyboard adapts to the user's unique way of communicating every time they swype, speak, tap, or write."


    The Swype Beta for Android is available for download via beta.swype.com. There's also an SDK for other operating systems.

    If you’re into space battles and vaporizing hostile aliens... then Atmo is just the video game for you.  Door 6 is the mastermind behind the project and just released it from beta testing. You can download Atmo for free from Google Play.

    For those who didn’t get a crack at the Atmo beta, it’s a real-time, multiplayer space combat game. Your team is charged with searching through capsules for a hidden enemy flag, capturing it and bringing it home, all the while fighting to keep your flag out of the clutches of your vile opponents.


    Atmo’s 3D graphics are great and ran smoothly in a few tests using the Samsung Galaxy Nexus. The heads-up display keeps you aware of everything around you, yet you don’t ever get disoriented in its fairly open world.  This video game can also be played on all major tablets brands including the HTC Flyer and HTC Jetstream, Samsung Galaxy Tab and the Motorola Xoom just to name a few.

    Start with Atmo’s tutorial. It will give you an overview of the game’s controls and objectives. You’d better be ready to play.  At the end of those 45-seconds of training, you’ll be dropped in the middle of a live game. (Here’s a handy tip to get you started: hold down the fire button to maintain a steady stream of lasers heading toward ships, capsules and whatever else gets in your way.)


    The game gives you the option of just jumping in for a quick play, but if you want to track your score’s history, you have to login under your Facebook account. This is a pesky requirement right now, but pretty soon it will be used to team you up with Facebook friends who also want to play the game.


    The Door 6 team has quite a few plans for Atmo beyond today’s version. They’ve got a ranking system with a leveling mechanic and achievement rewards, ship customization options, and more sophisticated weapons like unmanned drones. Eventually, the game will morph into a lot more than just a thrill-of-the-destroying-your-enemies game.


    Your Apple-toting buddies won’t get left out of the game for long.  There’s an iOS version in the works that’s due in the App Store soon.


    The game is available for free in Google Play right now. The designers are experimenting with versions where players can earn ship upgrades, or pay for them if they’re desperate.  A highly-complex version of the game that would be available for purchase is also in the works.

    HTC  has just confirmed that a hardware problem is causing Wi-Fi connectivity issues with their HTC One X smartphone.  To verify if your One X smartphone is defective... simply run the Wi-Fi  squeeze test if the signal strength improves - it confirms that the device is defective.

    The company is obviously faced with a tough hardware problem. A software update isn’t the answer. This isn’t the first time HTC has had Wi-Fi signal problems. Awhile back its HTC Sensation suffered from antenna design problems.


    HTC has stepped up early and accepted blame. In a public statement a company rep said: "After investigating isolated reports of Wi-Fi connectivity issues in the HTC One X, we have identified a fix that strengthens the area of the phone around the Wi-Fi antennae connection points. While many customers have not experienced any problems with signal strength, we have taken immediate steps to implement a solution in our production process to prevent this issue from happening in the future. HTC is committed to making sure every customer has a great experience and we apologize for any inconvenience this issue may have caused while we conducted a thorough investigation."


    This statement describes the production changes going forward, but there still doesn’t appear to be a plan for dealing with the defective phones already in consumer hands.  Everyone is covered by the warranty replacement protection, so if you think your phone has the problem, take it back to the point of purchase right away. Don’t let the warranty period expire.


    We hope HTC takes their corrective action one step further and provides protection for this defect to One X owners on an unlimited basis. What’s to say the problem couldn’t pop up in these phones at a later date?
