The Google Nexus One Review

With the Google Nexus One, everything that a person loves about the World Wide Web becomes conveniently available on a smart phone.

This diminutive device weighs in at only 130 grams and is slim, sleek and sophisticated. It has a 3.7 inch widescreen display however, and with 800 x 480 pixels, it is remarkably clear. A 100,000 to 1 contrast ratio proves that clarity is possible on a cellular phone screen.

The Google Nexus One also contains an on board 5-megapixel camera with 2X digital zoom capabilities. It will auto focus from a mere 6 cm to infinity. Not only that, this phone can pinpoint the location of each photo taken by using the phones own AGPS receiver. Video can be shot on the Nexus One on at least 20 frames per second at 720 x 480 pixels.

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth are part of the plan, and the phone offers A2DP stereo Bluetooth as well. To ensure that the user does not get lost, the phone also contains an assisted global positioning system receiver as well as cell phone tower and Wi-Fi positioning. It also has an on board accelerometer and digital compass.

With the Qualcomm QSD processor operating at 1 GHz, this phone runs smoothly on its Android operating system. The battery is impressive as well, with a removable 1400 mAH battery with USB charging capabilities that allow the user up to 20 hours of audio playback, up to 7 hours of video playback, and up to 5 hours Internet use on 3G or 6.5 hours on Wi-Fi. Talk time is up to 10 hours worth on 2G, and up to 7 on 3G.

They keyboard offers language support for English, French, German, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese in the locations where these languages are most frequently used.

There is a lot to love about the new Google Nexus One phone, both as a cell phone, and as an Internet accessible computer.

Sony Ericsson U1i Satio Idou Review

Just in time for the holidays, Sony Ericsson’s U1i Satio Idou is a marvel among the latest wave of touchscreen smartphones. Priced at just around $700, the Satio Idou is far from cheap but for those who have done their research and know what they want in a handheld device, it is sure to prove a lucrative investment.

The Satio provides as many features as any phone currently on the market (including wifi, FM radio, video capability, Symbian Operating System, Bluetooth compatibility, memory card apparatus, stereo sound, Google Maps, GPS, MP3 and voice activation) but its most remarkable feature is its camera—the only of its kind to contain 12.1 megapixels.

Sony has boasted the Satio to be, essentially a hand-held entertainment system. It serves as a multimedia player and processor that enables you to record videos, watch movies, listen to music and take photos—all of which may either be share directly via internet or uploaded onto your PC. It is also compatible with all major internet applications.

Other than the price, which may prove a bit steep for some, the only potential downfall for the fully-loaded Satio may be that it is a bit too clustered. The menu, which consists of only three keys, can be a bit misleading in that it may take a while to navigate its multitudinous functions. On the other hand, it is remarkably compact for such a complex instrument. Weighing-in at about 126 grams and about 112 x 55 x 13 mm, The Satio is the virtual world collapsed into a device that can fit comfortably inside of your pocket.

Efficient, portable and sophisticated the Satio Idou is a fine work of electronics that promises to give consumers the most bang for their buck.

Blackberry Bold 9700

So a first hand review of the Blackberry Bold 9700 has been posted by BoyGeniusReport.com and  it seems to be two thumbs up.  From what the review says this is going to be the best Blackberry phone to date.

It’s smaller then the Tour 9630 but bigger then the Curve 8900.  The Bold 9700 also does away with the trackball in favor of the trackpad that is found on the Curve 8520.  The testers seemed to love it.

The screen is apparently a great screen.  Actually they said the best one yet of any Blackberry.  It’s was clear and crisp and images seemed to float on the screen.

Best of all the battery seems to have the longest life of any 3G phone currently on the market.

I guess only time will tell what the phone is really like until it is finally released.  Expect to see it on PureMobile as soon as it is.

Sony Ericsson Xperia X3

With the Xperia X1 still fresh in people’s minds and the Xperia X2 not even on the market yet it looks like the Sony Ericsson Xperia X3 might be released in January 2010.  The Xperia X3 looks like it will be the first Android from Sony Ericsson.

We actually saw our first glimpse of the Xperia X3 a few months ago when images of the Sony Ericsson Rachel hit the web.  It is rumored to have an 8 mega-pixel camera built in, WiFi, GPS, microSD expansion, email support for POP3 and even Microsoft Exchange.

I guess for now we will just have to wait see when Sony Ericsson makes the official announcement on the Xperia X3.

Travelling And Your Cell Phone

We recently came across this article on CNN that talked about high roaming charges and we thought it would be a good idea to bring it up on the blog.

The article talks about P. Morgan Brown and “when his wife decided to take a spur-of-the-moment vacation to Indonesia.”  When she got back from the trip her “Verizon bill came to a staggering $8,000. Text-messages home cost an astounding $2.50 each and the meter was running at an eye-popping $1.75 a minute for phone calls.

Now Mrs. Brown’s case is an exception but it’s happening more and more.  People aren’t realizing the charges and the roaming rates they are being charged.

This problem isn’t happening just with overseas travel.  Steven Frischling, a New York travel consultant, returned from a recent trip to Detroit to find a $500 international phone bill.  The problem wiht his bill was he was in Detroit which meant it wasn’t actually roaming.  The problem was the Apple iPhone he used kept picking up signal from the Canadian towers.  He was able to prove that he was in Detroit and the charges were eventually reveresed.

The article gives 5 things you can do to alleviate those high charges

1. Buy another phone.  That’s right when you get over to the place you are going by a local service with pre-paid SIM card.  Likely this will be a cheaper alternative then the roaming charges.  We are sure that a local cell phone place would have been better then an $8000 bill.

2. Get a plan.  If you want to keep you phone and still use your carriers service then consider getting a international plan.  One where roaming is included.

3. Go VOIP.  VOIP or Voice Over Internet Protocol is a feature that lets you make a call over the internet rather then over the cell phone towers.  You may have heard of Skype.  This is a VOIP service and if you are make Skype to Skype calls then calling is free anywhere in the world.  You can be in the US and calling someone in China and you wouldn’t pay a dime.

4. Swap Cards.  Probably the most convenient way.  If you have a GSM cell phone you can get it unlocked or you can buy an unlocked cell phone.  By doing this it lets you use the same phone you are use to but simply remove the SIM card in the phone and replace it with one locally.  Basically this gives you the option of getting a local plan but not having to buy a phone.  This is good since you can generally pick up a SIM card in most convenience stores.  You basically are turning your cell phone into a pre-paid service.  When you get back state-side simply put your regular SIM card back in and you’ll have your old service without the charges.

5. Leave your phone at home.  If you really want to be sure then simply don’t bring your phone.  If it’s not out of the country then it can’t get high roaming charges.

4 New Phones Coming Soon

This week 4 new phones have been announced by Nokia and Sony Ericsson.  Nokia has announced the Nokia X3, Nokia X6 and the Nokia N97 Mini.  Sony Ericsson on the other hand has announced the Sony Ericsson Xperia X2.

The Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 is going to be released similar to the Sony Ericsson Xperia X1.  The Xperia X2 is going to come in a X2 and X2a version.  Basically one (X2a) will have 3G for North America and the other (X2) will have European 3G.  The Xperia X2 is going to have Windows Mobile Professional 6.5, Wifi, Bluetooth 2.1 with A2DP, and even an 8MP camera built in.  All in all the Sony Ericsson Xperia X2 does seem like a nice upgrade from the popular Xperia X1

Nokia’s first phone is a follow up the the Nokia N97.  The new phone is the Nokia N97 Mini.  It is a strange release because the N97 Mini is pretty much the same as the N97.  If you are wondering the difference one website saide the Nokia N97 Mini is the N97 at 90% the size.  Basically it’s not really that mini.  It still has the 8GB of internal memory, the 5MP camera and the FM transmitter.  If you found the N97 to be a little bulky then you should definitely give the Nokia N97 Mini smartphone a look

The second phone is the Nokia X3.  This is rumored to be a lower budget phone.  The rumor is that the Nokia X3 will cost around $150USD, but that has yet to be determined.  The X3 looks to be a really nice phone.  It’s going to be a slider without 3G capabilities.  It will have a 3.2MP camera, Bluetooth v2.1 with A2DP, and will support up to a 16GB MicroSD card.

The last phone that Nokia accounced was the Nokia X6.  This new phone will be a touch screen phone.  It will have 32GB of internal storage, a 5MP camera, European 3G and up to 8h 30mins talk time.  The Nokia X6 looks to be a really nice touch screen phone.

Do You Drive and Text?

We came across an interesting article on the Consumerist about a poll done to see if a laws should be inacted to stop people from using cell phones while driving.

What was interesting was that 80% of respondants said they would support banning texting and emailing while driving.  Even 67% would support banning cell phone calls during driving.

Of all the things learned about in the survey it seems more people feel that more people talk and drive now then they did a year ago.

Many states are coming with laws and we are going to see more in the future.  If you want to see the full Nationwide poll you can read it here.  Otherwise we’d recommend getting a Bluetooth headset or Bluetooth car kit to at least help you put some focus back on the road

11. Escape Call

In the past you had to rely on a trusted and loyal friend to call you mid-date to give you a polite excuse to flee the scene of the disaster. No more. Escape Call features ringing and call in progress screens that use names and photos from your phone’s address book. Because life is to short for stilted conversations.

So next time you’re stuck in a life-threatening or just plain uncomfortable situation, whip out your iPhone and grab a hold of that app life line. And if you don’t have an iPhone 3GS, maybe you can win one.
