  • Last time we checked in with Beats by Dre, the high-end headphones were all the rage among equally high-profile names. Everyone, from Gwen Stefani to Lil Wayne, and even the Biebs was sporting a pair, making them one of the hottest brands of its kind on the market.

But the top of the line headphones are about to get down and dirty, extreme sports style, in a new collaboration with Swedish company POC, a maker of protective sports gear. Ladies and gentlemen, behold the new Receptor BUG Helmet.

This brand spanking new snowboarding helmet comes with a pair of Beats by Dre built right into the neckroll.

"With the remote control, compatible with most smart phones, you can take calls and switch songs and adjust volume right from the cord. No more fumbling with gloves to find your cell phone or music player," says POC.

Of course you also get the Beats promise of sound clarity and quality that they make with all their heaphones and earbuds.

Of course, this is by no means the first ski or snowboard helmet to incorporate headphones for listening while you ride the slopes. But it's an interesting, though not really surprising, collaboration for the Beats brand, which has already caught on in the world of pro sports. (Lebron James already has a pair.)

But now we may start seeing Beats by Dre become as popular with extreme sports enthusiasts they are with recording artists, maybe even picking up a famous pro snowboarder to promote the brand along the way.

  • When you're listening to your favorite music, you want to hear every nuance, every instrument, every note, every word, and nothing more.

Unfortunately, even when you're listening with headphones, you often get a lot of unwanted add-ons – your neighbor yelling into the phone, a delivery truck idling down the street, the leaky faucet. Not exactly an ideal music listening experience, is it?

But today's mobile accessory of the week may just change all that. Designed to give you a superior sound without all the extra noise, ClarityOne's Premium Earbuds actually bring new technology to the table for the truest, most uncluttered audio we've seen – or rather, heard – yet.

They may appear to be rather small and mild-mannered aluminum earbuds, but ClarityOnes have something no other headphones on the market do – the Patented PureSound Processor, technology that took ClarityOne over 12 years to develop and perfect.

Most of today's standard headphones, earbuds, and speakers use voice coil or single coil technology, which was originally designed about a century ago for electric motors. the problem, explains ClarityOne, is that "all audio signals that go through a voice coil or a coil crossover is subject to interference. We know of this evil as distortion and loss of harmonics or your sound."

Instead of coils, ClarityOne earbuds use a different technology based on a coupling unit rather than a crossover. There's a lot of science involved in the explanation, which ClarityOne is happy to walk you through in the Tech section of their website.

But in short, they promise that their PureSound Processor produces pure, clean, undistorted sound that preserves the original harmonics and quality of all music, with no distortion.

And even though that promise, on its own, would set their headphones and earbuds a cut above the rest, ClarityOne hasn't stopped there. They've also tended to little details that would improve upon the design of even traditional headphones.

Each pair of ClarityOne Premium Earbuds come equipped with a lightweight microphone with call-answer and call-end features, as well as a track control feature so you can easily skip through songs.

The earbuds are also available with three different sizes of custom silicone tips, so you can get a perfect, comfortable fit that also eliminates all outside noise. And their wires are designed to resist tangles, which in the end, improves their lifespan.

We could probably go on and on, but the best test is probably to try them out, and see how they stack up next to your standard pair of headphones. We doubt you'll be disappointed.

  • Apple may have some revolutionary new earbuds for us to go along with next month’s iPhone launch.

In a patent filed earlier this year, Apple described a “vented in-the-ear headphones” design that reduces the echo of your own voice that you sometimes hear when you're on the phone. The patent that got approved yesterday claims the invention “aims to improve the sound quality by venting or leakage.”

It apparently works like this: When external vibrations caused from the sound within earphones bounce against the skull or other parts of the body near the ear, sound quality is reduced. Apple’s earbud design has a “vented tip” that forms a seal within the ear canal. As stated in Apple’s patent filing, “This provides the wearer with good acoustic isolation against external sounds.”

This is good acoustic news for all of us who’ve tried carrying on a phone conversation while exercising or even walking on a noisy street. Now let’s hope Apple lets those new earbuds loose with that new iPhone.
