HTC Poised to be More Competitive in 2012

By Megan Fleet

AT&T and T-Mobile have been denied their merger based on anti-trust laws. Steve Jobs is no longer a guiding creative force at Apple. The Euro has denigrated from one of the highest valued currencies to one of the most closely watched.  What is the common theme – Uncertainty in 2012 is rising!  Yet according to a report from ABI after market wireless accessories sales are expected to increase slightly more $50 billion volume.  With the following accessory category breakdown:

Bluetooth Headsets at $920 Million

Chargers at $766 Million

Memory Cards $529 Million

Protective Cases and Skins at $520 Million

Headphones and Earpieces at $308 Million

HTC Poised to be More Competitive in 2012

In the same breath, HTC is poised to change their current market situation and be more competitive in 2012 with the release of new cell phones, tablets and other mobile devices along with matching wireless accessories.   The company’s CFO, Winston Yung said “We will focus on the product next year, better and more competitive. Other than new LTE phones for the U.S. market, we have phones for the global market. We will launch some worldwide flagship products. We’re confident in them”.

At the moment, however, HTC will have to contend with the recent sharp (30% – ouch!) decline of its stocks prices (which coincidentally coincides with the cut growth expectations for the final quarter of the fiscal year and a 45 million HTC Cell Phone unit cancellation).

While struggling to keep pace with cellular barons like Apple and Samsung, the prodigy fledgling will find its wings with Beats Audio (an acquisition made earlier this 2011), the Amaze and Raider.

HTC Poised to be More Competitive in 2012

With the loss of a lost patent infringement case that had been filed against Apple – and lost a justification to become embroiled in litigation in regards to S3 graphics threatens to tarnish the HTC glow.  Yet, clever marketing, smart acquisitions, and a plethora of mobile device accessories in addition to noteworthy camera quality and network speed should all help right the HTC ship.

Keep your eyes peeled for the new HTC Ville and HTC Zeta for the next round of Android 4.0 devices and take advantage of some truly great mobile devices and music and give them a whirl yourself. Enhance your mobility! Turn your device into a power tool.  Discover our select accessories specifically designed to make your devices functionally efficient and performance rich.

Ulysse Nardin’s The Chairman

Chairman by Ulysse Nardin is the world’s most expensive Android smartphone, and includes both a touch screen and a physical number pad. The Ulysse Nardin name is most often associated with luxury watches and that fact shows in the Chairman’s sophisticated design. The volume controls look like watch buttons and the crown between them can actually be wound to generate power for the device. In fact, the phone features a kinetic rotor power system visible through the back plate.

Nokia 8800 Arte with pink diamonds – $134,000

Nokia 8800 Arte with pink diamonds

Designed by Peter Aloisson, this solid 18k white gold phone features over 680 pink and white brilliant cut diamonds totaling over 21.5 carats. Some of the phone’s features are a 3.15 MP camera with autofocus and video, a music player, Bluetooth and voice memo.  Accessories are available

iPhone Princess Plus – $176,400

iPhone Princess Plus

The Princess Plus got its name from the Princess cut used on 138 of the 318 diamonds on its surface. The other 180 diamonds on the phone were brilliant-cut. In total, the phone has 17.75 carats of diamonds set in 18k white gold around its rim. The iPhone Princess Plus is worth $176,400 while the somewhat more pedestrian “Brilliants only” version sold for $66,150.  The fashionista can further personalize this mobile device with sophisticated phone accessories

Sony Ericsson Black Diamond – $300,000

Sony Ericsson Black Diamond

The price of this phone comes from actual state of the art technology instead of a bunch of shiny rocks—but that doesn’t mean it lacks visual appeal. OLED technology underneath the polycarbonate skin that covers the phones entire face gives the 4 megapixel screen a borderless look. The mirror finish gives the phone a sleek, futuristic look.  Self conscious?  Accessorize your cell phone

Vertu Signature Cobra – $310,000

Vertu Signature Cobra

This gaudy phone is so exclusive that only eight will ever be made. Designed by French jeweler Boucheron, the Signature Cobra is made with two diamonds, two emeralds and 439 rubies. For buyers who are only filthy rich, rather than obscenely rich, twenty-six of the less flashy (read: no rubies) Signature Python phones will be available for a mere $115,000. Both phones will feature the real draw—they have frikkin’ snakes on them. Awesome.  Make your fashion statement with exclusive mobile accessories

Gresso Luxor Las Vegas Jackpot –  $1 million

Gresso Luxor Las Vegas Jackpot

This ultra-exclusive phone, limited to only three units, truly lives up to its name. Not only is it extraordinarily expensive, but its Egypt-inspired design will look right at home in the hands of a Vegas high-roller. The phone features 45.5 carats of black diamonds decorating the bezel and a back panel made from 200-year-old African blackwood—the most expensive wood in the world. As if that weren’t enough to ensure the Jackpot a place among the world’s most expensive mobile phones, each key is cut from a hand-polished sapphire crystal. All of these luxurious materials are set in a 180-gram solid gold frame.

The Diamond Crypto Smartphone – $1.3 million

The Diamond Crypto Smartphone

Created by luxury accessory producer Peter Aloisson of Moscow-based JSC Ancort, this luxury smart phone’s price stems from the platinum body, the cover adorned with 50 diamonds—including eight that are rare blue diamonds. Additionally, the Ancort logo and the navigation key are made of 18k rose gold. Built on the Windows CE, this expensive cell also features a high-resolution color TFT display and a 256 bit cryptographic algorithm. This expensive mobile phone features SMS, MMS, E-mail and Internet capability, WAP, JAVA support and even a media player.  Further enhance you smart phone’ s functionality with these accessories

GoldVish ‘Le Million’ Piece Unique – $1.3 million

GoldVish Le Million Piece Unique

Guinness World Records certified GoldVish SA’s ‘Le Million’ Piece Unique on January 29th, 2008. The Geneva-based luxury communications company’s expensive mobile phone was designed by Emmanuel Gueit as an addition to the Illusion Collection. The phone is made of 18k white gold and set with 20 carats of VVS1 (only microscopically flawed) diamonds. The phone also features Bluetooth, 2 GB of storage, FM radio, a digital camera and MP3 playback. This expensive cell phone is available only by special order.

Kings Button iPhone – $2.4 million

Kings Button iPhone

The Kings Button iPhone is, surprisingly, a jewel-bedecked iPhone. This time, however, Aloisson had the iPhone 3G to play with—and, apparently, a bit of a bigger budget. One hundred and thirty-eight brilliant-cut diamonds line the sides of the phone, but the real prize is the home button—a rare 6.6 carat white diamond.  Bring out this device’s features with stylish cell phone accessories

Goldstriker iPhone 3GS Supreme – $3.2 million

Goldstriker iPhone 3GS Supreme

Stuart Hughes of Goldstriker International is known for giving luxury devices such as phones and video game consoles the “Supreme” treatment—covering them with gold and diamonds—and the iPhone is no exception. The iPhone 3GS Supreme features a casing made from 271 grams of solid 22k gold and a screen trimmed with fifty-three 1-carat diamonds. The home button is covered with a single rare 7.1-carat diamond. That’s not all, though—the iPhone 3GS Supreme comes in a chest carved from a single block of granite and sports Kashmir gold and an interior lining made with Nubuck top grain leather.   Fuse fashion and functionality with exclusive mobile accessories

iPhone 4 Diamond Rose Edition – $8 million

iPhone 4 Diamond Rose Edition

If you thought his iPhone 3GS Supreme was impressive, check out the latest iPhone from Stuart Hughes–the iPhone 4 Diamond Rose Edition. Hughes has recreated the infamous antenna band that wraps around the sides of the latest iPhone, as well as the backplate, using rose gold. The band is adorned with 100 carats of flawless diamonds, and the Apple logo is formed with fifty-three more diamonds. Once again, the home button gets the most love–it’s made of platinum and features a rare 7.4-carat pink diamond.

The phone comes in an imperial pink 7-kilogram chest cut from a single block of granite and lined with nubuck top-grain leather. It also comes with an 8-carat flawless diamond that can be used in place of the pink one.  Make a further personalized fashion statement, accessorize your cell phone now!

State gets ready with new ban on text messaging while driving

Cope of the Michigan state are now all set to be putting into action the state’s ban on text messaging while driving from 1st July onwards since it is becoming a big threat to live on the streets. This action has already been undertaken by 14 other states in the United States of America, as well as in various countries over the world. In Canada for instance, the whole phenomenon of sending text messages from your  unlocked cellphone while behind the wheel is being eliminated in gradual stages by the implementation of stringent fines and reprimands.

However as straightforward the law may seem, it will be really difficult to implement properly. The moot point is that how is one supposed to understand whether you’re text messaging or just looking at the number of missed calls you got in the last half an hour? Michigan Police Executive Director Tom Hendrickson said that it would be difficult for law enforcers to understand whether a person is text messaging while driving and he does have a valid point.

Matt Bolger, 1st Lt. of the State Police, who trains cops on new laws, says that people who are using their cell-phone for calling have nothing to fret about. There would be a fine of around $ 100 for the first time and then a fine of $200 the next time you are caught.

By enforcing this law Michigan moved into the bandwagon, which already includes other US states such as California, New Jersey and also Washington D.C.

One good thing about the law is its transparency. Chances are that wherever you might be caught, you would have to pay a fine. So Michigan has decided to go ahead and ban text messaging while driving from unlocked phone. Indeed, one can make a call instead (as there’s no ban on talking on a Bluetooth device)!

7 Reasons Nokia Gets No Love In The US

Wired.com a few days ago had an article, which we actually would like to post our comments on.

1 – A weak brand – We wouldn’t call them a weak brand but we do agree they need more marketing.  The face time Nokia puts into their US launches is low.  With phones like the E71 and the E72 and N86 getting FCC approval some really good phones are coming to market.  They just need to market them.

2 – Lack of focus on CDMA handsets – This we had a problem with.  Granted we sell GSM phones but overall CDMA is not as widespread as GSM.  If you get a quad-band GSM phone you pretty much can go all over the world and get covereage.  The same doesn’t go for CDMA.  Nokia decided it wasn’t really a good investment since it’s only the US and Canada that really support the network and now it even looks like the two major CDMA providers in Canada are swtiching to GSM.  Why support something that looks to be dying off?

3 – Poor execution – In recent history Nokia has made a few mistakes.  The Nokia 5800 XpressMusic didn’t have the best launch which is a shame since the phone as actually a very good one and their apps store, Ovi, had a rocky start as well.  Again doesnt’ help but anyone can bounce back considering no company has had a perfect launch record

4 – Lack of carrier relationships – This goes back to the CDMA problem.  They have phone with AT&T and T-Mobile which is the major GSM networks and it’s exactly what they want.

5 – Unusual design – They have a lot of straight body phone and a few sliders.  With the amount of people who love the iPhone people are getting away from the flip phone.  Maybe we will start to see more

6 – Symbian – Alright it’s not a perfect O/S but is there really any that is?  Windows Mobile has its problems, Android has its problems, and Apple has their problems as well.   Nothing perfect, but at least like all of them Symbian is being constantly being worked on

7 – An insignificant app store – Wired compared Ovi to the Apple Apps Store.  First things first the Apps store launched over a year ago, but Ovi lunched in May of this year.  They also say compare the 20 000 apps at Ovi to the 55 000+ apps at the Apple store… Again over a year.  Personally we feel to have have the apps in only 3 months that’s pretty good.

So overall alright Nokia gets no love in the US and yes they don’t do as much as they should but overall we think the landscape is changing.  Nokia makes some great phones and people just need to start giving them a chance

GSM Defined

One thing that we most often get questions on at PureMobile is regarding the GSM network and what it is.  The reason is there are two networks CDMA and GSM.  The main difference to find out which you have is locate the sim card, a small chip in the phone that contains all your information.  If you have this card then you likely have GSM.  Now we say likely as some carrier’s like Sprint have a walkie-talkie type network (NexTel) and they use a “sim card” but it’s for Sprint’s CDMA network.

GSM phones can be unlocked because the sim card can be removed and placed into another phone without having to call the carrier to activate it.  CDMA needs to have each phone activated by the carrier on the network to operate.  This limits the phones you can use.

Another difference is that GSM phones are much more widely available.  GSM networks are found throughout the world.  They each use different bands but they are all GSM.  CDMA can be found primarily in North America and a few other countries.

As we just mentioned GSM use bands or frequencies.  There are four frequencies that are used most frequently.  They are the 850 MHz, 900 MHz, 1800 MHz and the 1900 MHz bands.  In North America the two widely available are the 850 MHz and the 1900 MHz.

So the question is which type of phone should you choose?  Well it depends on where you plan on using the phone.  If you are going to use it in North America then you can simply get any phone that uses the 850 MHz and 1900 MHz bands and you should have no problems.  If you plan to travel then you would be best to get a quad band phone, which is a phone that can work on all four of the bands.  This gives you the least chance of running into a problem with no signal.

More and more phones these days are coming as quad band phones so you don’t have to limit yourself.  You can get one phone and use it the world over.
