Moshi for iPad
  • So RIM has been on a real hot streak recently.  They have been releasing a lot of phones recently, with the Bold, Storm and Curve 8900 no one can say they haven't been able to get their fix and now it looks like they are releasing another Blackberry phone.

This one is set to be a "low-end" phone.  The new phone, Blackberry Curve 8520, looks to be released in the next few months as it is in testing phase now.  The new Curve will be an upgrade to the old 8300 line but won't be as full featured as the higher end Curve 8900.

There was a full review done over at Crackberry with a testing unit.  They down a full review and include that the specs for the phone are:

    • Edge device
    • 320 by 240 display
    • 256 megabytes of internal memory (same as 8900)
    • 1150mAh battery
    • 2 megapixel camera, no flash

Alright so there aren't many specs known at this point, but the phone is still in testing so more feature might become available later one.  Some interesting things mentioned in the article though about the Curve 8520 are

    • No flash for the camera
    • No charging pins
    • No standard trackball

The above features all seem like they will be missing from the Blackberry Curve 8520.  Most notably the trackball has been replaced by an optical trackball.  Basically they got rid of the ball and made it a sensor.  According to the article the implementation of it on the Curve 8520 seems to be pretty smooth.

Also another new feature is dedicated media buttons to play and pause your music on the phone.

The phone's casing is also "rubberized" which should make it a little more resistant to being dropped.

So the big question now are when will it be released?  The fact that it is now being tested does show that it shouldn't be too much longer.  Hopefully sooner then later we will be able to see this lower end Blackberry cell phone hit the market to give people another option.

  • New Palm Phone Soon To Be Released
Posted on April 30, 2009 by Pure Mobile

So it looks like this year is going to be a year that Palm makes a jump back into the cell phone market.  In the past year or so Palm hasnt' really been seen on the market.  Many people had lost confidence as they had issues with the 680 and 750 models.  Well now this year with the Palm Pre releasing they have announced the Palm Eos

This is looking to be the first North American phone that will run on the Palm WebOS.  As for the phone it seems pretty standard.

The specs we've seen come from BoyGeniusReport.com

    • Quad-band GSM, 850/1900MHz HSDPA
    • 111 x 55 x 10.6mm (looks like the E71’s reign as the thinnest QWERTY smartphone is coming to an end)
    • 2.63-inch 320 x 400 capacitive display
    • 4GB storage
    • Price: $349 (pre-rebate)
    • Camera: 2 megapixel fixed focus digital camera and flash / video capture
    • Connectivity: Bluetooth 2.1 w/ A2DP and EDR, USB 2.0 via micro USB
    • Removable 1150 mAh battery (4 hours 3G talk time)
    • Messaging: SMS, MMS (picture and video only), integrated IM client
    • Contact sync with AT&T Address Book
    • MediaNet
    • Cellular Video
    • Email: POP3, IMAP4, and EAS support
    • A-GPS
    • Audio: WAV, MP3, AAC, AAC+ ringtones
    • Video Playback: MPEG4, H.264, H.263

This new phone looks like it will help get Palm back in the game, or at least get a foot in the door.  One nice feature is that it will have North American 3G, which has definitely something that's been lacking in some recent phones that have been released.

Only time will tell how well the phone will do but it does give people a choice.

  • Solar Panel Cell Phones
Posted on April 22, 2009 by Pure Mobile

Well today is Earth Day.  This year it is even more celebrated because everyone is starting to realize how much we, as a world, have to come together and start taking care of our planet.  We are seeing more and more technologies go "green" and this is no exception with cell phones

    Reading an article on treehugger.com

"Another cell phone is getting a solar panel slapped on its surface, showing that going solar is juuuust starting to become all the rage among mobile phone makers. At least in a limited way."

The specs of the phone are still limited

"AU (KDDI) and Sharp are presenting a new phone in the Japanese market that has a solar panel embedded in its lid. Users can leave it in the sun for up to 10 minutes in order to generate enough energy for 1 minute of communication or 2 hours on standby"

Now really that isn't too much time and it will take hours if not days to charge your phone in the sun, but at least it's a step in the right direction and hopefully this will become more common in the future.

Sony Ericsson made a huge debut this year with a new phone.  The phone is called the Idou. Although it is still a little early for a complete review we felt that a quick post about it was in order

The Sony Ericsson Idou is set to be a really stunning phone.  It is going to have a 12MP camera and a 3.5 inch screen, which will make the display nice and easy to see.

The other big thing about the Sony Ericsson Idou is that it will be a touch screen phone.  Like many phones currently on, or coming to, the market it is following the trend.  It does look like Sony Ericsson has done a good job with the touch screen though.

Lastly the Idou will be using the Symbian Foundations operating system, which is similar to what can be found on phones like the Nokia N95.  This is a stable operating system and should help the phone make some serious waves in the market

As usual as soon as the Sony Ericsson Idou is released Puremobile will have a complete review.  For now like everyone else we just have to wait and see

  • The "Great" Exodus
Posted on December 22, 2008 by Pure Mobile

Friday again and it's on week until Christmas.  It's coming to that time of the year where people are starting to call loved ones and spending more time on the phone and it turns out that more people are turning toward cell phone only lives.  That means less people are getting home phone lines and opting for the cell phone as their only phone.

On a recent article on discovery.com they said

...The portion of homes with cell phones but no landlines has grown to 18 percent, led by adults living with unrelated roommates, renters and young people, according to federal figures released Wednesday.

An additional 13 percent of households have landlines but get all or nearly all calls on their cells, the survey showed. Taken together, that means about three in 10 households are essentially reachable only on their wireless phones.

That is not very surprising as more and more people are finding that being always available is very convenient

Another article from Howstuffworks.com explain the reasons for the switch

...People who have made the switch cite several benefits. Wireless communication saves money on local and long-distance phone charges, frees people up from their desks and prevents having to lay new cables. Laymen Global, the New Jersey company, saved $4,600 on its phone bill by forgoing landlines

Now this isn't saying go out and cancel your home line but it is something to think about.  With more and more people wanting to be always available or less people spending time at the house it is a nice option.  You no longer have to remember phone numbers as you always have your phone book with you.  If you haven't considered it you can always go to puremobile.com and see what phones are available.

  • Which Phones Do Celebs Choose And Why?
Posted on November 22, 2008 by Pure Mobile

This week we will be starting a new topic every Friday we are going to have a posting related to cell phones and their everyday use.  At Puremobile.com we feel that we bombard you with so many cell phone reviews that maybe our customers would like to read something more interesting.

This week being the introductory entry we thought we'd write about celebrities and their cell phones.  In the past the celebs tended to gravitate toward phones that were both functional and made a statement.  At one point many celebrities were using the Sidekick by T-Mobile.  This was a favorite for quiet sometime and actually was a phone that gave many people the option of a full keyboard.  Many of these phones have gone to the wayside but you can still see their influences in phones like the i-Mate Ultimate 9502.  These days many celebs can be seen using more than one phone, but among all the choices there are two favorites and they seem to be the iPhone and Blackberry Curve.

Among the celebrities Miley Cyrus uses the iPhone, which seems to be more popular among the younger celebrities.  Being the kind of phone it is likely drives the younger generation towards the style and more importantly younger people tend be adopt new technology faster.

Paris Hilton in the past has been seen using the sidekick and even had the phone hacked at one point where all the internet had private phone numbers of various celebrities.  These days she's been seen using the Blackberry Curve with it's full QWERTY keyboard.  Other celebs that use the curve are Lindsay Lohan and Katherine McPhee among a whole slew of others.  Even Barack Obama uses a Blackberry but may have to give it up on January 20th when he takes office.

Eva Longoria uses the BlackJack II from Samsung.  It's similar to the curve but slightly larger.  Other notable names that use the BlackJack II are Jon Voight and Kevin Connolly.

Now the real question is what motivates the phone choices.  We guess it's something that no one other then the real inner circle of each celeb can answer.  Among the reasons are sponsorship/endorsments, usefulness and simply a need to fit in.  The last one being something that both celebrities and us everyday people share.  One celebrity might by a specific phone because all her friends have it then in turn we will get that phone because so and so has it.

In the end why they do what they do no one can really know, but we do all find it fun to delve into someone elses life for a little to see what others are doing.  There is a world of information out their about which cell phones people use and we suggest going out and seeing others use and think.  It gives you an idea of what can be good.  If nothing else you can learn a little something about that celebrity you love to watch.
