  • N64 Emulator Arrives on Android
Posted on March 8, 2011 by Pure Mobile

Emulators technically exist in a grey area, legally, but they have been present on Android for quite some time. There are many different emulators that are currently available on the Android such Unlocked Samsung Captivate i897, HTC Desire, etc. , starting with the original Nintendo and going all the way up through the original Playstation. Absent from the Android market was an emulator that most had been waiting anxiously for - a Nintendo 64 emulator. That has finally been addressed by the same person who was behind the creation of previous emulators, going by the name yongzh.

The emulator will require that you have a fairly powerful device in order to run the app, but so far it looks as if everything works as you might expect. Technically, you are supposed to own the N64 cartridge when downloading the ROMs, but of course this is an issue that is overlooked.

The touchscreen only handsets will allow you to control all of the game exclusively from the touchscreen. It might be a little hard for you to control them as well as you could with a controller, but nonetheless this should open up a lot of different games for use on your Android devices. It is a bit surprising that an N64 emulator has not made its way to Android devices previous to this.

Right now, the emulator will only cost around $6, which seems to be a fair price. You might want to look around and see what games you can find prior to downloading the emulator. Also keep in mind that these emulators exist within a legal grey area. Eventually, this issue could be addressed, especially because the emulators are not being made available for free, and instead rquire that you pay for them. Bring back memories when the N64 ruled the land of games.

  • Apple COO Talks Cheap iPhone
Posted on March 6, 2011 by Pure Mobile

The rumors about a cheaper unlocked iPhone 4 have been around for a long time. They first started a few weeks ago when reports stated that an iPhone-mini version was being worked on. these rumors were quickly shot down and now it appears that instead of a smaller version of the iPhone, Apple might just be looking into creating a version of the iPhone that features lower quality hardware and is able to be sold for a cheaper price.

The Apple COO, Tim Cook stated in a recent press event that Apple does not want their products to only be for “the rich,” and confirmed that they are looking to release cheaper versions of their products in order to make them appeal to a larger selection of people. Of course, the rumors of a cheaper version of the iPhone have been all over the net in recent months, but Apple has not really addressed them as directly as they did today.

Apple is also looking into expanding into the prepaid market. The moves that Apple was looking to make in the prepaid market was described as “clever,” although Tim Cook did not go any farther with his explanations then that. He also confirmed that Apple was going to be aggressively pursuing the tablet market moving forward, as the demand for those devices has risen substantially over the course of the last few weeks.

some have said that they believe that tablets could one day end up being as much as a $100 billion business for Apple, followed by other companies who are releasing devices in the space. With technology moving so quickly, who knows what kind of features could be included with tablets in the future. Watch for more rumors of a cheaper iPhone 4 unlocked and other prepaid plans being released at some point in the near future.

  • 150,000 Gmail Accounts Gone
Posted on March 3, 2011 by Pure Mobile

As per one of the leading unlocked cell phone blog site, More than 150,000 Gmail accounts disappeared as a result of a bug. All of the information contained in the accounts was also deleted. Imagine losing years of conversations and contacts. The initial estimate was 0.29% of all Gmail accounts, but that estimate was revised and said to be sitting more around 0.08% by the end of the day. According to a number of different reports, the correspondence within these accounts was also deleted throughout the past weekend. Users were unable to log in to their accounts. Once the accounts had been restored, the information within the accounts was mysteriously missing.

Essentially, the accounts were completely reset and all that was left was the user-name and login for the accounts. Google has maintained that they believe they will be able to restore all of the data that was lost. until that time, users will not be able to access their GMail accounts because of the issue.

Google quickly released a statement ensuring users that they were hard at work on the issue and stated that they would be working hard to restore full data access for the affected accounts. This is the first time that users have seen a mass deleting of their accounts and it is not clear what might have caused the issue. All Google has said so far was that it was some kind of bug, which seems to be in line with other reports that were released shortly following the deletion of the accounts.

Users have been asked to not contact support and instead to stay updated with the progress through press releases that google issues. All of the deleted accounts are on the same page and none will be restored publicly before others. Although it is a very large hiccup on Google’s part, it sounds as if everything will be restored.

  • Samsung Google Nexus S Review
Posted on March 3, 2011 by Pure Mobile

The Unlocked Samsung Google Nexus S is a phone that has surprising slipped under the radar in recent months despite the fact that it has been connected to two of the biggest names in the mobile industry. All around the Samsung Google Nexus S is a great offering, both in terms of hardware as well as in usability and in design.

It features a 1 GHZ Hummingbird CPU and 512 MB of RAM - More than enough to run Gingerbread, the 2.3 version of Android that the device utilizes. It’s four inch screen has a 800 x 480 Super AMOLED display that delivers top notch visuals and also has a five megapixel camera on the back, rear facing side of the phone as well as a VGA front facing camera that will allow you to video chat.

The design is sleek. The phone looks great, is light weight and can easily be stored in the pocket. The sound quality of the Samsung Google Nexus S is much better than previous devices in the S line, and the sounds on the other end are crystal clear and easy to hear.

The camera looks great, feels great and is leaps and bounds above other similar devices. The Gingerbread software is part of the reason why the phone has been so well reviewed, and the features provided through the software update are top of the line.

It is a mystery as to why the Samsung Google Nexus S Unlocked has not received more attention since it was first confirmed and announced. Perhaps users have been turned off by the problems that the Nexus One faced when it was first released - but that certainly should not stop you if you are looking for an excellent phone that comes with Gingerbread and has the hardware to back up even the most taxing of applications.

  • As per one of the leading unlocked cell phone blog site, it is easy to see why iPad’s or other tablet devices would be solid purchases for members of parliament. Having all that power on the go would probably allow them to stay connected with their people a little bit easier. However, it was recently released that the ruling by the Board of Internal Economy (a ruling that was actually placed in November) that states that the board did not agree to allow them to purchase the iPads because of the great expense.

Not including taxes, the iPad’s would probably cost more than $160,000 in total.  Another reason behind the decision was that the “house system is totally based on Microsoft.” The ruling suggested that perhaps the infrastructure would be different and would cause issues as well. Of course, this does not seem like that valid of an excuse given how user friendly the iPad is and has been as a whole.

Many of the parliament members have purchased the iPad on their own dime since the ruling came down. Had they allowed members to use the iPad, they would have become the first major country to adopt the iPad on a government level as a legitimate tracking tool. It will be interesting to see how many decide to go out and buy tablet solutions on their own. It is easy to see how a purchase like this could benefit parliament members. They would probably be more likely to stay in contact with the general public and would have a device that would allow them to constantly update on progress during negotiations and share information with other members of parliament.

Although problems regarding infrastructure were cited as the reasoning behind the decision, the cost probably had more to do with it than anything else. Thousands of dollars on devices that are not required for the job is a hard sell, especially with the economy the way that it is today.

  • AT&T HTC Inspire 4G Not Really 4G
Posted on February 24, 2011 by Pure Mobile

The AT&T Unlocked HTC (Inspire 4G) name would suggest that the phone was compatible with 4G networks. This is not always the case, as we have learned from several previous device launches. The phone does not feature full 4 G HSPA+ compatibility as provided by the AT&T network. AT&T went ahead and announced at the Consumer Electronics Show that their network had been upgraded in the same way that T-Mobile made their announcement at the same show - by surprise.

Now it appears that the phone is not even as fast as some of the 3G phones on the network. Tests have shown that downloads are slowed, uploads are excruciatingly slow, and overall the device seems to run much more slowly than you would think that it would.

So now it appears that carriers are just placing the “4G” sticker on smart devices without even offering the full compatibility. This is not something that will make most consumers happy, and they should have guessed that it would be discovered at some point. Now it has to make you wonder if future phones with the 4G title will have similar issues with the company’s network. Perhaps the company disabled the 4G ability in the firmware.

AT&T has yet to comment on the reports about the phone not accessing the 4G network in the same way that was promised by the company during the Consumer Electronics Show. With their announcement of their upgraded network you would have thought that new phones with the “4G” label would be able to access the network, but that does not seem to be the case here. It will be interesting to see how they comment on the story over the course of the next few days, or if they let the reports fall by the wayside and ignore them.

  • As per one of the leading unlocked cell phone blog site, Redbox clarified rumors that they were planning to launch a streaming Netflix competitor later this year. CEO of Coinstar, the company that owns Redbox, confirmed that the service was in the works last year during an earnings call, but did not elaborate on how it would operate or how soon users could expect to use the service. He also did not have any information regarding the pricing model that would be employed with the new service.

Lowe confirmed today that the new service will be a subscription service in the same way that Netflix is run. No further information regarding exact pricing was given. At this point in time, Redbox runs unmanned DVD rental machines that allow users to rent a movie for one dollar per night. These kiosks are usually stocked with the latest new releases in an effort to compete with video rental stores.

Redbox did not reveal whether or not they had a partner for their upcoming streaming service, but it is assumed that they could not operate a subscription based streaming service without first partnering with a company that has the hardware to back up the operation.

Redbox is looking to directly compete with Netflix, after easily taking hold of the movie rental market. With Blockbuster, Hollywood Video, and other movie rental companies struggling to stay afloat with high rent prices, Redbox was ahead of the game when they launched the unmanned do it yourself kiosks that have become highly popular in recent years. It will be interesting to see how well RedBox will be able to compete with Netflix, which has already established themselves as the leader in the streaming market after cutting deals with all of the major console gaming systems, allowing gamers to link right up with their library of streaming movies and play them directly through the console platform.

  • The Unlocked Acer Liquid Metal is the most recent smart phone offering from Acer and has been a highly anticipated device for a good reason - it has a robust feature list that make it ideal for users that are looking to get a top of the line phone without having to pay top of the line prices. The Acer Liquid Metal is easily one of the best devices that the company has offered.

It will utilize the Qualcomm 7230 800 MHz processor that will allow you to navigate through the phone at a lighting fast rate. Along with the great processor, the phone will use Android Froyo Version 2.2, which reportedly allows devices to browse from one screen to another nearly five times as quick. The internet features have also been upgraded, including a new browser that has the flash support that was mysteriously missing in earlier versions of the device and a Social Jogger app that allows you to easily aggregate your Facebook and Twitter fees for one streamlined feed that allows you to easily keep up with the updates from all of your friends and family.

Along with the great additions to the surfing power of the device, it will also feature a 5 mega pixel camera (with LED flash) that will allow you to record HD video at 720p, or what translates to 30 frames per second. The Liquid Metal will also allow you to use the enhanced high resolution videos and play them straight through the device, which features an HDMI out port that makes it easy for you to play the videos that you record directly through the television.

All in all, the Acer Liquid Metal Unlocked handset is a great offering that has stepped its game up in nearly every aspect since it was first released. The phone is constantly updating the audio technology, surfing abilities and specs that have made it one of the most highly anticipated phones on the market since it was first announced.

  • Samsung Offers Hands On For Galaxy Tab
Posted on February 16, 2011 by Pure Mobile

The Unlocked Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 got a lot of attention at the World Mobile Congress, and hands on events were given to all of the major blogs within the space. The device is an amazing tablet, and may be the nicest on the market. The dimensions are ideal for tablet use, and the device itself looks great.

It comes with a 10.1 inch screen and a 1280 x 800 pixel resolution display. The rear facing camera is eight megapixel, making it more powerful than most camera phones on the market. It also has a 2 megapixel front facing camera that will allow you to video chat with loved ones and friends. It runs on a Tegra 2 processor, and will run on Android 3.0. Since Android 3.0 is still in its development stage, you can bet that things will be ironed out and the device will run even faster once the software version is finalized.

The refresh rate of the screens was great, and no lag was noticeable. Although Honeycomb is not released yet, it looks as though it will be a great operating system that should meet the demands of just about an tablet out there.

The 10 inch form factor screen is the perfect size for a tablet and makes it easy to transport from one location to another. the smooth design, perfect size and high powered specs have made the Samsung Galaxy Tab unlocked highly anticipated since it was first announced - and for a good reason - it is an excellent device that should compete with the iPad and other big tablet devices in the coming weeks and months. The eight megapixel camera surpasses expectations and the front facing camera seals the deal.

  • In this unlocked cell phone world, most take electricity for granted, until they go camping or the power goes out. Everyone has been placed in situations when they are stuck with a dead phone and have no way to charge it. Imagine never having to subject yourself to situations like that one again when you use the Umeox Apollo, which is a solar powered phone.

The device was announced at the Mobile World Congress. There have been a number of previously released solar powered devices that also run on Android in the past, but never has one of these phones been as outwardly impressive as the Umeox Apollo.

So far there is no information on whether or not it will even be released in the United States or anywhere in North America. The Chinese manufacturer has remained tight lipped about the phone. Some rumors have stated that the company is working on two different versions of the phone including one that will work in the US and support 850/1900 MHz bands (which would allow the phone to work with AT&T), and one version that would allow the phone to work in Europe and Asia.

The specs of the phone are a bit underpowered. It will feature a 3.2” 320x480 Display, with over a gigabyte of storage inside the phone as well as a microSD card slot.

The phone will also come with a three megapixel rear camera, which is a bit underpowered given the current market. The company did warn users not to kill the battery completely. Charging for daily usage would only need about 2.5 hours of sun light, if the phone is sitting in the sun and not being used. However, after completely dying, the phone would need about 17 hours to charge.
