Samsung Omnia breathes new life into Windows smartphone OS

Some people would look at current market share distribution for Windows OS smartphones and give a shrug “meh – 2% of the market? Not a likely contender.” It is true that Microsoft hasn’t had the easiest road breaking into this new era of pocket PCs (aka smartphones), but the latest joint venture with European feature phone giant, Nokia, looks to be a step in the right direction. What would a giant step in the right direction be? Pairing up its OS with a Samsung handset. This is precisely what they have down with the Samsung i8350 Omnia W, a move that is bound to shake things up as Samsung has quickly become the Android golden child of smartphone manufacturing.  Let the latest trend setting fashionable accessories express your unique style!  Discover award-wining design protective cases and skins that deliver modern style, stunning design and smart protection.  Make your mobile devices stand out.  Customize your look - how cool can you be?

Time for the good, the bad, the ugly and a few ideas of rectifying some of the bad and ugly.  The Omnia W isn’t revolutionary. It’s a far sight more attractive than its predecessor, the Omnia S, but is still a midrange phone intended to compete in the North American market. Its most notable features? Powered by a 1.4GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon CPU and the Mango 7.5 OS, great battery life and screen clarity with the Super AMOLED touchscreen, Mobile Office document viewer / editor (one of the features that makes this a great buy for business professionals), and a multitude of social network integration and cloud services.   break free from long-term locked in service contract... unlocked cell phones enable you to enjoy the freedom of choosing your service provider and negotiating the service plan that best meets your interactive lifestyle.

Samsung Omnia breathes new life into Windows smartphone OS

Now for where the Omnia S is lacking… Storage (it is non-expandable and there is no mass storage), no Flash support in browser (so no streaming your favorite guilty pleasure from ABC.com while on the go), and no video support are the most notable. Luckily these are shortcomings are either addressable by purchasing external storage or SD memory cards and investing in a separate media device for shooting video and streaming Flash content.

While the Omnia S doesn’t have the most dazzling internal stats, processor, or operating system, this Windows / Samsung collaboration does hit the intended mark of being elegant, aesthetically pleasing, business oriented smartphone for the a midrange market that integrates the best part of Microsoft and Windows: ease of use. They have made social media, texting, and the new ways we communicate all integral in the People Hub and have stayed with the current “Siri” trend of voice activated commands.

Samsung Omnia breathes new life into Windows smartphone OSOn the bright side, accessories such as Bluetooth headsets, car chargers as well as protective cases and skins along with screen protectors.

For its shortcomings, there seem to be few that can’t be overcome with a bit of extracurricular accessory acquisitions and eventual Windows OS updates. As with any smartphone, this writer chalks much of it up to personal preference and how individuals use their devices. With plenty of unlocked phones, OS, and competitive carriers out there, it is a buyer’s market. So investigate the options, usage plans, and your must-haves in a mobile device and happy hunting!

Leaving your valuable mobile devices unprotected is risky!  The latest innovative protection solutions allow you to protect your devices from scratches and blemishes with stylish top brand bags, sleeves and cases.  Tough on the outside, sweet on the inside our brand name protection accessories combine complete device coverage with sleek artistic expression.

  • Carrier IQ to face the Feds
Posted on December 16, 2011 by Pure Mobile

    By Aldo Panessidi

Carrier IQ is getting beat up. Amid the flurry and speculation around the use of its stealth-ware on handsets for certain carriers, the company now has to contend with a federal investigation. This is prompted by the software’s ability (and use of that ability) to track a number of activities conducted on smartphones including SMS and browsing without the users’ knowledge. And then sends that information to the carrier to use it as they see fit. Alas, it doesn’t take a legal eagle to note the potential for serious privacy law infringements.   Unlocked cell phones provide an excellent way to protect yourself against carrier tracking your personal SMS and mobile usage.

Carrier IQ to face the Feds

In the wake of this bombshell, The Washington Post reports that Carrier IQ execs met with officials from the FCC (Federal Communication Commission) and also with the FTC (Federal Trade Commission) on Tuesday. The article also included this response from the Carrier IQ representative, Mira Woods, “We are complying with all investigations at this time as we have nothing to hide […] we have been completely transparent through this process.”  Leaving your valuable mobile devices unprotected is risky!  Discover the latest in innovative protection solutions...   stylish top brand bags, sleeves and cases allow you to protect your devices from scratches and blemishes.  Tough on the outside, sweet on the inside our brand name protection accessories combine complete device coverage with sleek artistic expression.

Questions regarding these practices and technology first arose this September which Carrier IQ was able to quell. Unfortunately for the software company, a security researcher by the name of Trevor Eckhart recently thrust the company back into the spotlight and now into the arms of the FTC and FCC. While Carrier IQ insists that its software is actually innocuous and “collects enough information to understand the customer experience with devices on our network and how to devise solutions to use and connection problems,” Eckhart was able to prove that the company actually collected and shared data that could include personal data, location information, and key strokes. What better advertisement for unlocked smartphones is there?  Discover the widest online selection of Bluetooth Headsets and BlueTooth Car Kits.  Latest technology from top brand manufacturers.  Hands free functionality is designed for the interactive 'on the go' lifestyle  and allows safe driving.

Carrier IQ to face the FedsAs this is the kind of scandal that breathes life into 1984-esque conspiracy theories, it is no surprise that Tuesday also brought further allegations were made against the FBI, insinuating that the bureau may also be taking advantage of this technology to silently spy and collect information on smartphone users. The prompt for this accusation was the denial of a Freedom of Information Act request made to the bureau in regards to the Carrier IQ scandal. Consumers would be well advised to research the practices of carriers and manufacturers in this matter and leverage unlocked cell phones to protect privacy and information.

Smartphone manufacturers and carriers alike have also entered the fray to let the public know whether they use Carrier IQ’s software or now. Unfortunately, a public that feels betrayed and spied upon (and is still unaware of exactly what information has been gathered and shared from their smartphone usage) is not at ease or consoled by their statements. No doubt, class action lawsuits will be the next step in this ever unraveling drama.

  • Google to Release its Answer to Siri

Google to Release its Answer to Siri

Just in time for holiday parties, Apple unleashed its iPhone 4S on the masses. This optimist’s belief is that Apple was being very considerate in providing hosts and guests alike the perfect party trick: Siri.  It certainly provided an hour of entertainment at my last dinner party... although Siri did not answer any of my questions in a satisfactory manner.   Leaving your valuable mobile devices unprotected is risky!  Discover the latest stylish top brand bags, sleeves and cases which allow you to protect your devices from scratches and blemishes with our.  Tough on the outside, sweet on the inside these innovative  protection solution accessories combine complete device coverage with sleek artistic expression.

Hopefully, Google’s up and coming counterpart will have a better sense of humor. Rumor has it that the Android solution which would amp up the capabilities of “Voice Actions” on their smartphones and close the competitive gap that Siri created. AndroidandMe recently reported that the project is referred to by the code name “Majel” and could be released as early as the end of this year. As this technology will amp up smartphone usage even more, customers should be sure to use the latest in hands-free device such as Bluetooth headsets or BlueTooth Car Kits when taking advantage of this technology while driving (especially with amped up holiday patrols and tricky weather conditions).

Along the same lines as Siri, Majel is said to use the same method of conversational speech to issue queries in lieu of having to make use of limited compatible commands. The freshman release doesn’t look to allow end-users to control the phone or its installed applications, but that functionality may be in the pipeline for sometime next year. This is great for expanding the scope of hands-free technologies available on the market for both Android and Apple mobile devices.  Discover an extensive selection of the latest lithium technology replacement cell phone and wireless devices batteries.  Ensure your device is powered by brand name batteries for longer operating life.

Google to Release its Answer to Siri

For the moment, Majel is still a rumor, but Google’s actions all seem to have iOS and Apple in its sights to take down as competition, so… it is likely a very credible rumor. In fact, on Tuesday they announced the acquisition of Clever Sense (the developer of “Alfred,” a personal assistant software). We are still vague on whether Alfred (who IS quite similar to Siri) will be integrated into the first Majel launch (we can say with certainty that Alfred will not clean the bat cave or pick up dry cleaning).   Enhance your mobility... turn your device into a power tool.  Discover select memory and electronic accessories specifically designed to make your devices functionally efficient and performance rich.

For those Android users who have Siri envy that needs to be assuaged now, there are a couple third party assistant apps available in the Android marketplace (easily found by searching “Cluzee” or “Iris”). Otherwise, keep a running list of all your Majel questions for when it is made available in the coming weeks or months!   Break away from long -term service provider contracts... enjoy the freedom of unlocked cell phones.

Cell Phone Pandemic – Texting / Talking while drivingWe’ve all heard the anecdotes and actually, you probably personally know someone who has been affected. It’s not AIDS; it’s not breast cancer; it’s not drunk driving. It’s texting and talking while driving. And in a recent Canadian survey (conducted by the insurance company Kanetix), 18% of the survey group admits to these cell activities while behind the wheel. The second question and perhaps more pertinent would be: how many Canadian drivers use a hands-free headset or other safety accessories? Bluetooth headsets and Bluetooth car kits accessories are proven to keep eyes on the road.

For smart phone users it is even more potentially treacherous when factoring in “playing games, checking social media, reading emails” and a plethora of other activities typical smart phone users engage in while driving.  In fact, in a study recently released by ComSource a full 70% of cellular consumers use their phones to text.  Discover the latest innovative protective solutions and premium electronic accessories from the industry's most leading brands

So what’s the tangible toll of these actions? According to Allstate Canada a full 80% of collisions are caused by distracted driving - in fact the province of Alberta gets first prize for distracted drivers.  If that doesn’t drive the point home, the findings of a study conducted by the Transportation Research Laboratory in Britain will.  Alcohol intoxication impaired driving reaction time by 12%.  Marijuana? Reaction time suffered even more: 21%.  Sober texting hampered reaction time by 35%. Hazarding a guess that the roads would be exponentially safer with the sale of hands-free accessories for every unlocked cell phone sold.

Given the number of cities, provinces and US states that are taking legislative actions to improve public safety we may soon be legally mandated to use Bluetooth car kit accessories. Cell phone free zones are seen in school zones, texting is banned in a full 35 states in the US and awareness of the dangers is ever growing. Before your next trip in the car, you may want to peruse the accessories that will keep you and your loved ones safer.

AT&T and T-Mobile have been denied their merger based on anti-trust laws. Steve Jobs is no longer a guiding creative force at Apple. The Euro has denigrated from one of the highest valued currencies to one of the most closely watched.  What is the common theme - Uncertainty in 2012 is rising!  Yet according to a report from ABI after market wireless accessories sales are expected to increase slightly more $50 billion volume.  With the following accessory category breakdown:

    Bluetooth Headsets at $920 Million

    Chargers at $766 Million

    Memory Cards $529 Million

Protective Cases and Skins at $520 Million

Headphones and Earpieces at $308 Million

HTC Poised to be More Competitive in 2012

In the same breath, HTC is poised to change their current market situation and be more competitive in 2012 with the release of new cell phones, tablets and other mobile devices along with matching wireless accessories.   The company’s CFO, Winston Yung said “We will focus on the product next year, better and more competitive. Other than new LTE phones for the U.S. market, we have phones for the global market. We will launch some worldwide flagship products. We’re confident in them”.

At the moment, however, HTC will have to contend with the recent sharp (30% - ouch!) decline of its stocks prices (which coincidentally coincides with the cut growth expectations for the final quarter of the fiscal year and a 45 million HTC Cell Phone unit cancellation).

While struggling to keep pace with cellular barons like Apple and Samsung, the prodigy fledgling will find its wings with Beats Audio (an acquisition made earlier this 2011), the Amaze and Raider.

HTC Poised to be More Competitive in 2012

With the loss of a lost patent infringement case that had been filed against Apple - and lost a justification to become embroiled in litigation in regards to S3 graphics threatens to tarnish the HTC glow.  Yet, clever marketing, smart acquisitions, and a plethora of mobile device accessories in addition to noteworthy camera quality and network speed should all help right the HTC ship.

Keep your eyes peeled for the new HTC Ville and HTC Zeta for the next round of Android 4.0 devices and take advantage of some truly great mobile devices and music and give them a whirl yourself. Enhance your mobility! Turn your device into a power tool.  Discover our select accessories specifically designed to make your devices functionally efficient and performance rich.

  • Industry experts are already weighing in on the release of the new Kindle Fire Tablet by Amazon. JP Morgan executives fell that the release falls short of what is needed to make a dent in an industry that is dominated by Apple. Executive director Mark Moskowitz suggests that in order to penetrate the tablet market such as unlocked Motorola Xoom, HTC Flyer, etc , the tablet must be fully loaded and compete with the current tablets available on the market today. He views this release of the Kindle Fire as a stepping stone to getting into the industry full fledged.

Mixed Review of the Amazon Kindle Fire

The Amazon Kindle Fire release does not have the specifications of some of the more powerful tablets available. It does however has a price point that is believed will open up the market to a whole new subset of consumers. At $199, more consumers are likely to jump on board as the cost is much lower than the typical $500 price point on the market today. If the JP Morgan executives are right in calling this release a stepping stone, it may be a good strategy to go with as sales of the Kindle Fire may be better than other entries in the past.

Mixed Review of the Amazon Kindle FireBy no means is Amazon resting their success on Kindle Fire. There are already reports of Amazon working on a more powerful Quad-Core tablet codenamed “Hollywood”. This release will likely mark the official entry of Amazon into the tablet space. Expected to release in the first quarter of 2012, the tablet will include the proprietary offerings that Amazon has within their businesses including eBooks, Movies, Music, and the Cloud services. They do have some very interesting services they can include with their tablets which gives them an edge over all others that have entered the space. The next 12 months or so will give us a clue as to their long term plans in an ever crowded space.

  • Google Launches YouTube Netflix Competitor in CanadaGoogle has announced that they are going to be launching their own Netflix competitor throughout all of Canada, titled YouTube Movies. the company has been working behind the scenes to ensure that they get the service up sooner rather than later throughout all of Canada. It will be a direct competitor with the Netflix platform that has become so popular throughout the country. The service first debuted in the United States, and has become quite popular since then. The deal and the United States will allow for customers to be able to rent movies for a total of $3.99 or $4.99 each. After they purchased the movie, they will have up to 30 days to watch the movie.

The move is an interesting one for Google, a company that has not delved too deep into this type of business before. Like many of their other services they may be more interested in throwing things at the dart board and seeing what sticks. This new YouTube Movies service has the potential to be one of the biggest rimming movie services on the Internet, but only if they’re going to be able to capitalize on those subscribers that have already left their other platforms because of increasing distrust with the recent hike in prices.

Google Launches YouTube Netflix Competitor in Canada

It will certainly be an interesting thing to watch and see if it is able to take off. Google knows that they are going to have to compete with services that are already out there in order to be able tofind a footing that they require to make this the service that they are hoping to make.they have been able to put together an excellent service, but the fact of the matter is that sometimes that is not enough for you to be able to get to the position that you were looking to get to. They are going to need to position themselves as the new, cooler option.

  • Android Secures 40% of Smart Phones
Posted on September 2, 2011 by Pure Mobile

The Google Android platform is one that has been constantly gaining popularity since it was first released. They have been able to put together a very excellent smart device operating system that has been able to be picked up by a number of manufacturers to allow them to place on their phones such as unlocked Samsung Galaxy S II, Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc. They were able to increase their total market share by 1% last quarter to grab a total of 40% of the US market device market. The Apple IOS stayed flat at a total of 28% of the overall market and research in motion Blackberry operating system continue to lose 1.2 fault to a total of just 19%.

Android Secures 40% of Smart Phones

The Windows operating systems, Windows mobile, along with the newer Windows phone operating system were able to take up a total of 8% of the market. Many of those who utilize Windows operating systems for their phone are still using the older operating system that was carried with many smart devices when it was first released. Microsoft and rethought their strategy as they saw their market share slip in and was able to release the Windows Phone 7 operating system which has been ahead for the company, but is the start of a very slow climb upwards and market share.

It is not currently clear if Android will be able to reach the 50% market anytime in the near future, but they seem to be slowly but surely climbing in overall market share for smart devices throughout the US. Reaching the 40% mark shows that there are going to be able to continue to climb, and they have already made themselves the largest operating system for smart devices on the market well ahead of competing Apple and Research in Motion operating systems. The trend will continue with Window Phone 7 perhaps making a small dent.
