But why was Eric Schmidt spotted using what looks to be a BlackBerry?

    Author: John Castell Jr.
    Editor: Aldo Panessidi

You can clearly see this in the following images from Engadget. One would think that Eric Schmidt would have learned his lesson after having made the same snafu - when he was caught earlier this summer using a non Android phone.

  • It had already been speculated that both Sprint and Verizon Wireless would eventually pick up RIM’s hot new BlackBerry Bold 9650 smartphone.  It appears that these speculations are starting to become facts as Sprint has recently announced that the BlackBerry Bold 9650 will be hitting store shelves on May 23rd.  Sprint customers who are clamoring over the BlackBerry device will be able to purchase this new mobile device for $199.99 after a $100 mail in rebate and 2 year contract.

BlackBerry 9630 Tour Black Sprint Unlocked GSM Cellular Phone

This new BlackBerry device has several great features that will be sure to tempt any BlackBerry fan.  The new Bold 9650 is set to come with a 480 x 360 resolution display, BlackBerry OS 5, WiFi module and a 3.2 megapixel camera.  With specs like these it easy to see why various networks would want to pick up this device.  It is sure to be a huge hit among many smartphone users and BlackBerry customers.

It looks like Sprint is going to be getting the leg up on its competition by being the first cell phone provider to offer the new BlackBerry Bold 9650.  With a bevy of unique features the Bold 9650 figures to quickly become one of the better selling BlackBerry mobile devices, like the BlackBerry Storm 2.  I am sure that other cell phone providers will quickly follow suit once they see what kind of success Sprint will surely have with this new device.  Even at the sort of pricey point of $199 after mail in rebate this new BlackBerry phone is sure to be a best seller for both Sprint and BlackBerry.

  • Vonage has recently announced that a new version of their Vonage Mobile app will be coming to the Android platform.  This new version of the Vonage Mobile app will only be available to Android users on the AT&T and T-Mobile networks.  Vonage Mobile allows customers to make voice over IP calls using a W-Fi network which can significantly reduce the costs of making international calls.

When asked about the upcoming availability on Sprint and Verizon devices Vonage reps were unsure when those devices would be supported by the new app.  While the Vonage reps were unable to offer a timeline for those two networks they did mention that Vonage was looking to expand the product to more devices.  Reps would also not comment on the possibility of Verizon’s new deal with Skype being one of the reasons why this new Vonage app is not available on Verizon Wireless devices.  This new Vonage app is already available for iPhone OS devices which includes the iPod touch as well as BlackBerry devices

While Vonage may not be that great of an alternative to long distance carriers for your land lines this app certainly is great news for people that are looking to lower the costs of their international phone bills.  As one of the leading VoIP companies around Vonage can offer you great service at an affordable price.  Being able to use Vonage’s services over a Wi-Fi network on your mobile device is an excellent addition to any new smartphone.  With the increase in popularity of Android devices it makes sense that Vonage would focus on getting a new mobile app available for those devices.  With the success they have seen from their iPhone and BlackBerry apps it will be no surprise when the Vonage Mobile app becomes a huge success for Android users as well.

  • The financial reports of wireless phone manufacturer RIM were announced today and it was pretty much good news across the board.  The company set a new record for quarterly Unlocked BlackBerry Phone activations which resulted in an increase of 4.9 million accounts which brings their current total to 41 million subscribers.  Also, annual revenue grew 35% to $15 billion versus the previous year.  The only bit of bad news was that RIM missed their quarterly revenue expectations of $4.31 billion by about $230 million.

Co-CEO Jim Balsillie was quoted as saying that RIM is “off to a great start in fiscal 2011 and expect strong shipments, revenue, subscriber and earnings growth in Q1."  I would have to agree with his assessments and am particularly impressed with all of the new BlackBerry Unlocked Phone customers they were able to bring on board.  With all of these new customer acquisitions it is easy to see why and how annual revenue grew 35%.  While the fact that RIM did miss their current quarterly goals is a bit worrisome the overall big picture appears to be much more encouraging than this current quarter.

Perhaps RIM’s success is a sign that the economy is finally getting back on its feet as more and more consumers are willing to spend money on upgraded their mobile devices to a BlackBerry smartphone.  It will be interesting to see if RIM reaches or exceeds their second quarter goals and continues with their upward trend for the entire year to match last year’s growth.  It can also be expected to hear some more news about these numbers at next month’s all BlackBerry all the time WES show in Orlando, FL.

  • Research in Motion buys out Viigo
Posted on April 14, 2010 by Pure Mobile

In recent news BlackBerry development firm Viigo has been acquired by BlackBerry maker Research In Motion. Viigo, whose self titled app is one of the most popular for BlackBerry Unlocked Phones, made the announcement Friday. Once solely a RSS reader Viigo made a big splash back in 2008 when they started introducing new features such as the ability to track sports scores, weather, movie times, stock performance, flight information and podcasts. Viigo has historically developed solely for Windows Mobile but it is unclear whether or not this will continue after the news of this announcement.

This acquisition was a logical move for Research In Motion as Viigo is the most popular app for the BlackBerry Unlocked phones. It makes sense for them to want to purchase this company and utilize their WindowsMobile application development expertise. By bringing Viigo on board it will allow for BlackBerry to build apps that are tailored for their specific user base. Viigo will be able to develop specific applications for the BlackBerry devices that will continue to be very appealing for the BlackBerry consumer.

Also, by purchasing application developer Viigo BlackBerry will gain more control on what types of apps are released for their mobile devices. Having the ability to create these apps in house will allow BlackBerry to build a suite of apps that their consumers are sure to enjoy and will bring rave reviews for the many BlackBerry devices. It is well known that users love the various apps that are available on today’s smartphones and being able to have one of the best application makers in house will allow BlackBerry to remain a leader in the mobile device community.

  • Android’s U.S. Market Share Soars
Posted on March 25, 2010 by Pure Mobile

Looking at comScore’s January quarter cell phone manufacturer and platform market share statistics in the United States, we see some interesting trends.  Despite a sharp decrease in global sales, Motorola mobile devices surprisingly still maintains a 22.9% market share of American cell phone subscribers.  They saw a 1.2% decrease since October 2009, which is strange considering the release of the success of the Droid in recent months.  Considering Motorola’s lack of smart phone offerings, it tells you that the smart phone does not quite dominate the cell phone market as much as one might expect.  Samsung recently claimed to hold the number one spot in U.S. market share, but as with any claim, you need to take with a grain of salt and dig a little deeper.  When referring to total sales, and not current subscribers, this claim could be feasible, as there are still a huge number of legacy RAZR phones floating around and inflating these numbers.

    Motorola Cell Phones

Looking at the other popular smart phone manufacturers and platforms, Blackberry, iPhone, and Android all saw gains this quarter, while Palm and Windows Mobile each saw large downturns.  Regarding the decreases, it seems as though most can be attributed to a large number of Palm OS and WinMO phone subscribers coming off their contracts.  At this point, at the tail end of two year contracts, those operating systems are antiquated at best.  It’s well known that WinMo is well past its expiration date, with most people who used Windows Mobile heading to the Droid, iPhone, or Blackberry.

Blackberry and iPhone still dominate the smartphone landscape, but it seems like Droid is determined to steal some market share, as they’ve already gained 4.3% since it was released in November 2009.  It will be interesting to see if the Droid can continue to win over loyal iPhone and Blackberry users in the next quarter.

  • Blackberry Presenter
Posted on March 16, 2010 by Pure Mobile

The latest accessory to lighten the load of your mobile office is the Blackberry Presenter.  Available with a contract or as an unlocked cell phone this device is a wireless presentation tool.  Your bulky laptop can stay home and you can still deliver the one-two punch of a Microsoft Power Point presentation.

The presenter is just about the same size as your Blackberry.  There are two ports to connect directly to your projector.  The ease of operation is surprising, with the touch of your menu button you can press the launch presenter application, find your file, and your Blackberry locates the Power Point presentation that you preloaded into your Blackberry.  You then press the present option on your phone, and the pairing wizard will link your Blackberry up to the presenter and projector you are using.  This is handy in case someone else is also doing a presentation in the same convention hall or meeting space.  When you verify the document and send, the file will transfer and you are ready to begin your presentation.

    BlackBerry ACC26975001 Presenter

You can walk around while giving your presentation since the range on the wireless is 10 meters, or 30 feet with Bluetooth connection.  Freeze a frame in your presentation as you expand on the item you are speaking about is easy enough to do by holding down a button on your phone.  Your Blackberry can also hold speaker notes that you can see and the group you are addressing will not.  This hand-held accessory will make you look like a pro and give you the freedom and mobility to relax the group you are addressing thus making your presentation a hit.  You can set the presentation on loop and talk while the slide is operational or just leave the area if it is a convention stand-alone visual presentation.  Leave your laptop behind with a Blackberry Presenter setting up for a meeting just got easier.

  • Blackberry Bold 9700
Posted on September 23, 2009 by Pure Mobile

So a first hand review of the Blackberry Bold 9700 has been posted by BoyGeniusReport.com and  it seems to be two thumbs up.  From what the review says this is going to be the best Blackberry phone to date.

It's smaller then the Tour 9630 but bigger then the Curve 8900.  The Bold 9700 also does away with the trackball in favor of the trackpad that is found on the Curve 8520.  The testers seemed to love it.

The screen is apparently a great screen.  Actually they said the best one yet of any Blackberry.  It's was clear and crisp and images seemed to float on the screen.

Best of all the battery seems to have the longest life of any 3G phone currently on the market.

I guess only time will tell what the phone is really like until it is finally released.  Expect to see it on PureMobile as soon as it is.

  • Robin Williams Take on Tech
Posted on August 19, 2009 by Pure Mobile

So last week Robin Williams was on Conan O'Brian.  Conan started asking him about what he thought about technology and Robin Williams ran with it.

He talked about online gaming, facebook, twitter and myspace.  He even makes a mention about Blackberry's which he referred to as crackberry's.

This is a must watch for anyone.  Caution though it is on late night TV.
