  • Fans all over the world have been bombarded with speculation about this major update to Apple’s mobile platform, and now we all have a preliminary look.  Last week, Apple finally revealed the details for its iOS 6 with the low-down on over 200 new features, services and user interface upgrades.


    What is Apple thinking with its iOS 6?


    Apple has less than three months to get iOS 6 ready for release.  Here’s the low-down on one of the first reviews.


    First Impressions


    The beta release is available to developers, getting the new code into the hands of those who produce the apps in the crowded App Store. This evaluation is based on testing with the iPhone 4S, so if you have a different mobile device, your results may be different.


    Two hundred tweaks may sound like a lot (and it is), but there are a few key additions, updates and changes with iOS 6 that deserve a closer look. We’ll highlight the biggest upcoming changes that could have even Android, BlackBerry and Windows Phone loyalists thinking twice about Apple's iPhone.


    Siri


    Siri capability is added to the iPad 3 (but not older iPads or the iPhone 4 and earlier.) Siri has only been available on iPhone 4S until now.


    • Siri answers sports questions that go beyond just game scores including history, stats, player bios, and records without switching over to the browser.
    • Siri answers questions about movies like actors, directors, awards and movie stats, and shows status of premieres, reviews, trailers and tickets. It will bring up nearby listings and enable ticket purchases through Fandango.
    • Siri understands more languages Canadian English and French, Spanish, Italian, the varieties of German, Italian and French spoken in Switzerland, Korean, Mandarin, Cantonese. These are also supported in the satellite navigation app.
    • Siri finds the restaurant you are looking for and filters the results based on user reviews. It provides for detailed searches based on food type, location, outdoor, pool, price range, ratings, and more. (This feature is not available in every country.)
    •  Nine automakers (BMW, GM, Mercedes, Land Rover, Jaguar, Audi, Toyota, Chrysler and Honda) have promised to integrate Siri. Hitting the voice button in your car will activate Siri if your iPhone is connected to your vehicle’s infotainment system.
    • Siri launches apps by just saying their name.

    What is Apple thinking with its iOS 6?


    Facebook integration in Siri


    Twitter became integrated into iOS 5, and now Apple is doing the same with Facebook in iOS 6. Everything you can do now with Twitter, you'll be able to do with Facebook.


    • Use Siri to post Facebook updates and tweets.
    • With the link to Facebook you can update your contacts’ pictures, addresses, important dates, emails, phone numbers and websites. You will also get a new Facebook field with a shortcut to your contacts’ Facebook profile. It will load in the Safari browser, not the dedicated Facebook app.
    • All Facebook events will appear in the Calendar.
    • Facebook integration extends to the App Store and the iTunes Store. Whenever you tap on an app, song, movie, TV show, and more three tabs pop up: info, reviews and related.
    • Share photos on Facebook from inside the Camera or Photo apps.
    • Share addresses with a pin in Maps.

    In another blow to Google, there’s no Google+ integration. Then again, there's no Google+ integration in Android either…


    Apple Maps


    Google has been providing an Apple version of its Google Maps since iOS was born. But iOS 6 kicks Google Maps to the curb. While the Google version may still be available in the App Store, Apple’s iOS 6 Maps provided by TomTom will have the default position. Here are a few of the highlights:


    • iOS 6 Maps uses TomTom for all mapping and traffic data.
    • Siri connects to these maps, and turn-by-turn voice navigation is included for free.
    • You can access crowd-sourced traffic information for (almost) real-time traffic alerts.
    • 3D "Flyover" maps are available on the iPhone 4S, iPad 2 and the New iPad/iPad 3 (older models won't support the advanced graphics.). Zoom, tilt and rotate the landscape to explore 3D landmarks in real time.
    • Access local search and Yelp reviews.
    • Navigation even works in the lock screen mode and behind other apps. This is ideal for use in car mounts.
    • Offline mapping capability should be available in the coming weeks.

    PassBook


    Passbook is a single app that collects and intelligently displays boarding passes, movie tickets, retail coupons, and loyalty cards.


    • Any travel changes (like gate changes and fee differences) are displayed in Passbook in real-time as long as you have a data connection. This is a airline carrier partnership deal. So far the only airline to sign up is United. A lot more carriers will have to join to make this one worthwhile.
    • The location-aware app makes the right coupon available in the right place and at the right time.
    • The PassBook will report the balance on coupons and cards, let you check your ticket seats and can even show you relevant notifications (e.g. gate or terminal change for a flight).

    Safari browser


    The Safari browser has gotten a few minor updates:


    • It’s faster than it was on the iOS 5. Its benchmark scores for SunSpider, BrowserMark and HTML5test.com show significant improvement over iOS 5.1.1.
    • A full-screen view option is available from a dedicated button on the taskbar. It works only in landscape mode.
    • iCloud tab syncing is enabled, along with offline reading.
    • You can access to your multimedia content without exiting the browser.

    Email


    Good old email got some updates too:


    • Set up friends’ emails in a dedicated VIP mailbox, and it will appear highlighted in the regular inbox. Designate where you want to be notified of VIP emails (for example, put them on the lockscreen.)
    • Flag important emails and they’ll be placed in a Flagged mailbox.
    • Use different mail signatures for multiple email accounts.
    • Insert pictures or videos in emails just by tapping and holding on an empty space and accessing them from a pop-up menu.
    • The update button is now gone and there's a pull to refresh instead.

    Phone app


    Apple is adding some much needed calling features:


    • When you decline an incoming call, you can reply to it with a text message or set a callback reminder.
    • Use the Do Not Disturb setting to bypass calls and texts, except those from callers on your VIP list.
    • If the Repeated calls feature is activated a second call from the same contact within less than three minutes will not be silenced (it might be an emergency.)

    App Store and iTunes Store


    With iOS 6 Apple has updated the App Store and iTunes Store and content handling:


    • Featured pages have scrollable rows rather than lists.
    • The App Store won't prompt you to enter your password when you’re just updating apps.
    • You can see the change log in the Updates screen without opening the info screen.
    • After you buy or update apps you can continue browsing the store. You can also launch apps you've already installed from within the store.
    • The Game Center gets Facebook integration and supports challenges.

    FaceTime


    FaceTime for 3G is finally here, allowing FaceTime to work over cellular networks, not just Wi-Fi.


    • FaceTime now supports video chatting on data networks, but be warned; these chats run through around 3MB per minute and will chew through your LTE data plan in short order.
    • The unified FaceTime/iMessages ID lets you receive calls on an iPad using your phone number.
    • Other FaceTime improvements include updated Stores and system apps, new icons, and revised settings.

    What is Apple thinking with its iOS 6?


    Guided Access and Lost Mode


    Apple is working hard to bring iOS to people with disabilities through its Guided Access.


    • It helps students with disabilities remain on task and focused on content.
    • It allows a parent, teacher, or administrator to limit an iOS device to one app by disabling the Home button as well as restrict touch input on certain areas of the screen.
    • VoiceOver, a screen reader technology for blind and low-vision users, is now integrated with Maps, AssistiveTouch, and Zoom.
    • Guided Access could be useful as a kid- or test- mode. Loan your Apple device to your kids without being worried that they will access inappropriate content or change your settings and apps.

    Lost Mode is part of the former Find My iPhone service. If you lose your gadget, you can lock it remotely and send a message with your contact information. Lost Mode doesn’t have data wiping capability.


    Miscellaneous mentions


    Right inside the Photo app is a sub-social network for pictures called Shared Photo Stream. By choosing what pictures to share and which people to share them with, those you send them to will be able to like them and post comments.


    The Bluetooth toggle has more prominence with placement next to the Wi-Fi toggle.


    The Camera UI is now black.


    In the settings menu brightness is now in the wallpaper screen.


    In the auto brightness mode, your device will be in full control of the brightness and will move the slider above the toggle to show the currently selected setting.  You’ll be able to see exactly how bright the screen is, but you won’t be able to adjust it in auto-mode like you could in past iOS versions.


    The Settings and Clock apps have updated icons. The Clock app now allows you to access the iPod music library and assign any song as an alarm tone.


    Compatibility


    Not all Apple iPhone and iPad generations will get the upgrade. iOS 6 is compatible with iPhone 3GS, 4 and 4S; iPad 2 and 3; and the fourth-generation iPod Touch. The first iPad has been left behind.


    Siri access is expanded beyond the iPhone 4S, but only as far as iPad 3. The turn-by-turn navigation and the Flyover mode in Maps is only possible with the dual-core devices - iPhone 4S, iPad 2 and iPad 3.


    Wrap up


    The iOS 6 changes will make a difference for every Apple device that it’s made for.


    The big deal is Maps. While much of Maps looks similar to Google Maps, it integrates 3D and voice navigation. The integration with Siri is most of what will make Apple’s Maps a winner with most users.


    iOS 6 won’t inspire a mob of new customers, but we’ll see if the new iPhone 5 package makes the iOS 6 greater than the sum of its parts.

  • RIM begins new round of layoffs

    RIM begins new round of layoffs


    We’d heard back in April that RIM, the manufacturer of the BlackBerry smartphones including the Bold Touch 9900, Bold 9790 and Curve 9360 as well as the Playbook tablet - had planned a new round of employee layoffs, this in addition to the 2,000 employees who have already lost their jobs this year.


    Ironically, the new layoffs have begun almost one year to the day that The Waterloo Record reported last year’s RIM layoffs that were necessary to cut costs. In this new round, RIM plans to lay off at least 10% of its global workforce.


    RIM is pinning most of its hopes for a future on the BlackBerry 10 smartphone, but until that phone is on the market, RIM’s sales are going to continue to languish. In a recent interview with The Waterloo Record, a RIM spokesperson revealed this: “RIM has committed to achieving significant efficiencies and operating cost reductions over the course of this fiscal year. Our financial target is to drive at least $1 billion in savings by the end of fiscal 2013. Headcount reductions are part of this initiative.”


    Rim’s spokesperson said the current round of job reductions could see as many as 6,000 cuts as RIM tries to achieve $1 billion in savings by the end of fiscal 2013.

    Google’s Android is now the leading OS platform with 51% of the market. According to a recent MobiLens quarterly survey of mobile subscribers, Android use is growing at almost four times the rate of its closest competitor Apple, that services 30.7% of consumers with their iOS.

    Android Market Share Chart


    Android’s increase of 3.7% outpaces Apple’s mere 1% to give it the majority of the market. The increase for both of these companies comes at the expense of RIM that dropped 3.7% to 12.3% and Microsoft that registered a 0.8% decrease to 3.9% of the smartphone market. While Symbian held its ground at 1.4%.


    These number reflect changes in market share since the poll was done in December 2011.

    Google won’t be celebrating a long term victory just yet. Both Microsoft’s Windows 8 and RIM’s Blackberry 10 are due for release in the fall, but are already plagued by negative opinions. The rumor that Microsoft’s new platform might not support the current hardware lineup has sent a ripple of anger and confusion through the Windows Phone community.


    BlackBerry 10 may be the best OS version RIM has ever produced, and it’s telling this to the world right now. But at little more than 12% of the current market and a plethora of technical criticism about its lack of gadgets and apps, Blackberry has a lot of PR ahead.


    Unless Microsoft and RIM take the market by surprise, it looks like Google and Apple are going to battle it out with each other and continue to eat up their minor competitors’ markets.

    With the Mobile World Congress on the horizon, the top smartphone vendors (Apple, Blackberry, HTC,  LG Mobile, Motorola, Nokia, Samsung and Sony) are ramping up products that were introduced and released earlier this year and fine tuning the messaging for the upcoming event that will give them the opportunity to leverage the publicity, innovative mobile accessory launches that accompany these global gatherings. So, Samsung is in a great position to capitalize on the momentum on the world stage for its latest international device, the Samsung Galaxy Note.


    Samsung Galaxy Note


    As with other Samsung offerings, this unlocked cell phone has gone through a series of transformations before reaching the shores of North America and will align with its American siblings in certain areas. With four touch sensitive buttons under the screen and a Snapdragon S3 chipset under the hood, the 1.5 GHz dual-core Scorpion processor is a differentiator from the Exynos silicon found in the global version of the handset.


    And, with the added LTE connectivity, S Pen (stylus and pen), and large 5.3” Super AMOLED screen, this device looks to create its own niche and make its own waves in the mobile device industry. There is a slew of features that make this smartabletphone a good fit for some customers including a microSD slot (a nice consideration for a device that is likely to eat up a lot of storage), video recording in 1080p that has USB host and TV-out support, and full Flash support which is definitely sought out in media playing devices. The specs are long and worth checking out, but I would venture to say that the peripheral devices and accessories that will come along with this device will also be key.


    The size of the handset will make headsets and Bluetooth devices all the more imperative for those customers using the Galaxy Note as one-handed use is bound to be tricky. Purchase of a protective accessory that precludes the need to fit this smartabletphone in your pocket is also a likely necessity. All in all, Samsung has created a device that answers the needs of consumers who are looking to consolidate the number of devices they tote around. The functionality will please many, but to truly get the most from this handset, customers will have to plan carefully and invest in the best accessories and peripheral devices to fit their usage and lifestyle – all of which we look forward to seeing and reviewing at the MWC!

    Managing Customer churn as well acquiring new customers is an ongoing problem for all carriers... as such, they make it difficult for customers to switch providers.  To this end, practically all carriers worldwide engage in 'false highly-persuasive' advertising.  They will typically lure consumers with the offer of FREE smartphone and then hook, reel and lock them in with long term service plans that are designed to not only subsidize the cost of the cell phone but provide wireless voice & data services at premium prices.  To further enforce customer loyalty, carriers lock their giveaway phones to only work within their network frequencies - thus making it difficult for consumers to leave them for another carrier.


    In some cases, the programming may be easy to reverse, with the user simply reformatting the cell phone or removing the phone's memory card.   In other instances, the phone may be designed in such a way that it is impossible to use it with another network, with most cell phone brands, like Apple, Blackberry, Samsung, Nokia, Motorola, HTC, LG Mobile and Sony to name a few,  manufacturing specific phones for particular networks.

    Unlocking a phone - How it works


    Unlock Cell Phone


    A cellphone handset is like a body without a brain. It can't make calls unless it has a thumbnail-sized chip called a SIM card installed. The SIM card identifies an individual phone on a cellular network so that calls can be routed to it as the handset is carried from place to place, so the owner's account can be billed for air time and long-distance fees, and so on.


    When a phone is bought on a service plan, the SIM card in that phone is linked to the subscriber's ID information for billing. Most carriers lock the phone by programming its software so that it will only work with the SIM card they provide — try to swap it with a card from another carrier because it has a cheaper service plan, for example, and the phone won't recognize it.


    An unlocked cellphone is one that will recognize any SIM card. So if you're travelling in Europe and don't want to incur roaming charges or have every local call billed as long distance by your regular North American cellphone carrier, you can buy a local European carrier's card during your stay and pop it into your regular phone.


    The caveat is that there are two main cellphone networks, and they aren't compatible with one another. One is based on the CDMA standard, which is popular in North America and parts of Asia, and used by Bell and Telus in Canada. The other is GSM, which is used by Rogers in Canada and is the most common cellphone standard outside North America, used by more than 2 billion subscribers in most countries around the world.


    An unlocked phone will work on a compatible network — CDMA phones on CDMA networks and GSM handsets on GSM networks. But many CDMA phones have the SIM card built in, and have to be reprogrammed directly to make the phone work on another carrier's network. Most GSM handsets, on the other hand, have a slot that allows a SIM card to be swapped easily by the user.  As a result, unlocked cellphones available in Canada are predominantly GSM models.

  • iPhone Flaw Highlighted by RIM

    A recent CTO presentation I attended addressed the changing security landscape we are facing with consumerization  - what I deem to be… (choice of our own devices for corporate and personal use from our smartphones to our tablets.   This brought up the pros and cons of the various operating systems out there: iOS, Research In Motion, Android and Windows.  The graphic associated with the Apple slide was a glass biosphere that was thriving and completely self-contained – the perfectly controlled environment.

    This closed environment comes at a price: consumers have little control over their OS and the possibility of customizing to their needs. Requests for changes and customer gripes are eventually addressed. iPhone users now have MMS, multitasking, copy and paste and a full list of other revisions that also make our tablets and media players better. Unfortunately, one issue they haven’t fixed is control over alerts.


    Just imagine an area in settings where custom alerts could be set. Different profile modes where the choice of ring, vibrate, volume, and ringtones can be chosen. Apple could take a page out of RIM’s book; BlackBerry cell phones have long had this kind of alert controls. And, there is room for improvement that could include location-based profile alerts (example, goes to silent in movie theatre) and the like. Perhaps hanit could connect in those settings to all devices on the platform including the iPad, iPhone, iPod, etc).


    No matter if you’d like your Bluetooth turned off when you walk through the door at night or have different rings and notifications based on who is calling or texting, iOS users should have a bit more flexibility with their high-end devices. Moving to an iPhone from RIM and Android was challenging and this writer is still baffled that the handset is simply either “on” or on “vibrate.”


    Research In Motion certainly isn’t competing at the same level as Apple in terms of handsets, accessories and projected sales these days, but this is one area where the Canadian company trumps the iPhone capabilities.

    Android. Apple. Apple. Android. The mobile OS brands and their respective handset manufacturers are in the grip of a fierce, cyclical competition to be the best and win global mindshare. Which is why we follow the momentum and progress of their sales and innovation so closely. So how did the vendors stack up against one another?   The usual culprits are present: Apple’s iPhone 4S and Samsung’s Galaxy S 2.

    For the three-month average period ending in December, 234 million Americans age 13 and older used mobile devices. Device manufacturer Samsung ranked as the top OEM with 25.3 percent of U.S. mobile subscribers, followed by LG Mobile with 20 percent share and Motorola with 13.3 percent share. Apple continued to gain ground in the OEM market with 12.4 percent share of total mobile subscribers (up 2.2 percentage points), while RIM rounded out the top five with 6.7 percent share.

    97.9 million people in the U.S. owned smartphones during the three months ending in December, representing 40 percent of all mobile subscribers. Google Android ranked as the top smartphone platform with 47.3 percent market share, up 2.5 percentage points from September. Apple maintained its #2 position, growing 2.2 percentage points to 29.6 percent of the smartphone market. RIM ranked third with 16 percent share, followed by Microsoft (4.7 percent) and Symbian (1.4 percent).


    According to the another market research firm, The NPD Group, the top three best-selling smartphones in the United States of last quarter all came from Apple: the iPhone 4S, the iPhone 4, and the iPhone 3GS (which consumers can receive at no cost when signing a contract at AT&T). Two of Samsung’s flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S II made the top 5 list as well. The availability of some of these handsets as unlocked devices likely contributed to their success as well.

    When diving into the details of this buying behavior, NPD analyst, Ross Rubin, noted that customers are motivated by “a fast processor, improved camera and the Siri speech-driven agent, most iPhone buyers paid a premium for the iPhone 4S, making is the top-selling handset in Q4.” In fact, the latest iPhone 4S outsold its predecessor by a whopping 75% and lapped the iPhone 3GS by a ratio of five to one. Throw in an OS that ties in the number one selling tablets in the world and customer get hooked.


    When looking at the mobile OS platform of choice amongst first-time smartphone buyers, Android won out with 57% - Apple only saw 34% of those first time buyers choose their solution.


    Much as there are solid tech reasons for Apple’s great performance with the iPhone 4S, NPD’s Rubin also outlines the rationale of Android’s growth and popularity amongst first-time buyers. “Android has been criticized for offering a more complex user experience than its competitors, but the company’s wide carrier support and large app selection is appealing to new smartphone customers,” Rubin noted. “Android’s support of LTE at Verizon has also made it the exclusive choice for customers who want to take advantage of that carrier’s fastest network.”

  • HTC Struggling Since iPhone 4S Debut

    Taiwan’s top smartphone manufacturer, HTC, cannot seem to catch a break when pitted against Apple’s iPhone 4S. The many patent cases that have flown between the two companies have mainly had judgments in Apple’s favor. Based on recent revenue reports, the trend seems to be continuing.

    On Monday, earnings for the fourth quarter of last year were released and projections for the first quarter of this year that fall shy of industry expectations. When following the numbers, HTC has seemingly been stuck in second gear since Apple released the iPhone 4S.

    To put it in hard numbers, HTC reported consolidated revenue of NT$101.42 billion (US$3.43 billion) for the fourth quarter of 2011, a drop of 25.33 percent from the previous quarter.
    HTC also said its revenue may drop 31 to 36 percent sequentially to between NT$65 billion and NT$70 billion in the first quarter of 2012, as it is still undergoing a product cycle transition.


    The news doesn’t look much brighter to kick of 2012. The expectation was that HTC would net $85 billion this quarter. Instead, the money looks closer to $64 billion.

    Here we got a hold of three separate BlackBerry produced by  Ryan P.  a hardware Engineering Technician at RIM... these are the Water Test, the Drop Test and the Bend and Flex Test:


    The Water Test


    For the water test a BlackBerry Curve 9360 was dropped into water, or what they call the “Moisture Ingress Test”. This water contains dye so that they can tell where imperfections are in the design to “improve the device’s water seal”.

    The Durability Drop Test


    The actual drop test is cool and apparently every Berry gets dropped on concrete “hundreds of times” to ensure it’s ready for a full rollout. In the video it’s never states the amount of pressure that used for the bend test, but does confirm “your BlackBerry smartphone can withstand the pressure of your posterior”.

    The Bend and Flex Test


    Finally, the keys. Majority of BB users love the QWERTY keyboard – it’s one of the main reasons that makes a BlackBerry so “iconic”. The keys have been pushed, zapped and tested literally millions of times to sure they click with the right pressure and can withstand all the e-mails, BBM messages and tweets that you type.
