Acer and Intel are continuing to aggressively pursue the ultrabook market with plans to launch their own versions this year. Intel is planning on a price point of $699 which should offer some competition to an Apple MacBook Air price of $799. However, many believe that ultrabook sales projections for the competition will under-deliver until the launch of Windows 8.

Currently, Apple's 11-inch 64GB MacBook Air is priced at $999 with a 128GB version priced at $1,199. The 13-inch 128GB version is priced at $1,299 and 256GB version is $1,599.

The website also claims that Foxconn will have the honors of putting together the rumored 7-inch tablet that we may be seeing as early as August.

An independent evaluation of the Apple Mac OS X platform concluded that the software is “highly vulnerable to malware”, so says the security firm Kaspersky Lab.

    Apple Malware OS XKaspersky Logo

In the words of Kaspersky Lab CTO Nikolai Grebennikov, “Our experience tells us that in the near future, perhaps in a year or so, we will see the first malware targeting iOS. As Mac OS X market share continues to increase; we expect cyber-criminals to continue to develop new types of malware and attack methods. In order to meet these new threats, Kaspersky Lab has been conducting an in-depth analysis of Mac OS X vulnerabilities and new forms of malware.”

The company has tried to get this through to Apple before. Kaspersky Lab co-founder and chief executive Eugene Kaspersky has stated that Apple is a decade behind Microsoft in terms of computer security.

Grebennikov went on to say, “Our first investigations show Apple doesn’t pay enough attention to security. For example, Oracle closed a vulnerability in Java, which was a target for a major botnet several months ago. Apple blocked Oracle from updating Java on Mac OS, and they perform all the updates themselves. They only released the patch a few weeks ago – two or three months after the Oracle patch. That’s far too long.” Grebennikov’s position on the existence of the botnet is that it shows that “Apple’s security model isn’t perfect.”

Kaspersky Lab analysts have yet to identify any iOS-specific malware, but the company predicts that iPads and iPhones eventually will be infected.

While the security analysis Kaspersky Lab has been conducting is independent of Apple, the two do have a working relationship. Said Grebennikov, Apple “is open to collaborating with us regarding new Mac OS X vulnerabilities and malware that we identify during our analysis.”

  • At the company’s annual conference this week RIM’s new CEO Thorsten Heins officially confirmed the launch of a Blackberry PlayBook 4G LTE planned for later this year.

    BlackBerry PlayBook 4G LTE

According to a report from Canadian Reviewer, the new tablet will be equipped with a 1.5Ghz dual-core processor and a near-field communication chip. The article also indicated that the new tablet will support HTML 5 and Adobe Flash. It look similar to the current BlackBerry PlayBook.

Protect and enhance your Blackberry PlayBook with the latest tablet accessories from bags and sleeves to cases, screen protectors, data cables, wall chargers, desktop chargers and car chargers as well as, memory cards and batteries

RIM has some making up to do with its market since the PlayBook has been a sore point for RIM since its launch in May 2011. Its sales have slow and reviews are lukewarm. RIM is trying to improve things. An update in February added new features such as a native e-mail client and additional ways for interaction between the BlackBerry phone and the PlayBook tablet.

RIM’s 4G LTE PlayBook could be a way to challenge Apple tablet, such as the iPad 2, and iPad 3 hold on the enterprise market. This is one market that RIM has been doing well.

The following is a complete specification list for the BlackBerry Playbook 4G LTE

The latest results are in for NPD Group’s monthly Mobile Phone Track service. It looks like Apple retails it’s top seat as the #1 smartphone vendor in the U.S.

    Smartphone Market Share

Apple’s market ownership continues to strengthen. It’s market share increased by 7% in the first quarter year-over-year. In the past year, Apple’s iPhones were responsible for 29% of all smartphone sales in the U.S. Samsung with Its Samsung Galaxy S2 and the Samsung Galaxy Tablets seems to be the only company breathing anywhere down Apple’s neck.

I wrote another blog indicating that Samsung currently has the titles for the world’s largest smartphone vendor and largest overall mobile phone vendor. In the last year, Samsung recorded huge market share growth of 140%. That gives them ownership of 24% share of the market.

Why the confusion? Many analyst interpret market data differently... in addition a giant like Apple would react fervently to any news saying that its market position has been upset

Apple and Samsung together are responsible for 53% of all smartphones sold in the U.S. LG, HTC, Motorola and RIM sales continue to fall.

“Samsung is the only market leader from the feature phone era to transition to market leadership in the smartphone era in the U.S.,” said NPD analyst Ross Rubin. “Its broad carrier support and advertising – particularly in the ascendant pre-paid segment – have helped it achieve the highest market share among Android handset providers in the U.S.”

    Samsung vs Apple

NPD also reported that Google’s Android operating system is the highest selling mobile platform. Android use is trending in the right direction, and it regained some of the ground it had previously lost to Apple.

Android smartphone sales grew 24% over the last quarter of 2011 to 61% of the market. Apple iPhone sales are down significantly. The high of 41% in the last quarter is now 29%, a decline of 29%.

Apple is still the People’s Phone. Regardless of what the market share number shows, Apple’s iPhone 4S, iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS still hold the top three spots in NPD’s overall handset ranking for first quarter of 2012. Samsung’s Galaxy S2 and HTC’s EVO 3D round out the top five.

Rubin tries to explain what the poll number show: “After some release of pent-up demand from customers adopting the iPhone 4S, coupled with the company’s strength in the holiday season, Apple’s share fell in the first quarter, as we’ve often see it do in the quarter following its introduction of a new handset. Now that the iPhone is available on Sprint, though, the increased carrier coverage has created a higher baseline for Apple’s share than we have seen in the past.”

Google’s Android is now the leading OS platform with 51% of the market. According to a recent MobiLens quarterly survey of mobile subscribers, Android use is growing at almost four times the rate of its closest competitor Apple, that services 30.7% of consumers with their iOS.

    Android Market Share Chart

This phenomenal growth rate can be attributed to the latest releases of Samsung Galaxy S II LTE, HTC One X, Motorola Droid Razr II, LG Optimus L7 and Sony Xperia U as well as form a few of the new tablets including Samsung Galaxy Tab, Acer Iconia and the HTC Flyer

    Android Market Share Chart

Android’s increase of 3.7% outpaces Apple’s mere 1% to give it the majority of the market. The increase for both of these companies comes at the expense of RIM that dropped 3.7% to 12.3% and Microsoft that registered a 0.8% decrease to 3.9% of the smartphone market. While Symbian held its ground at 1.4%.

These number reflect changes in market share since the poll was done in December 2011.

Google won’t be celebrating a long term victory just yet. Both Microsoft’s Windows 8 and RIM’s Blackberry 10 are due for release in the fall, but are already plagued by negative opinions. The rumor that Microsoft’s new platform might not support the current hardware lineup has sent a ripple of anger and confusion through the Windows Phone community.

BlackBerry 10 may be the best OS version RIM has ever produced, and it’s telling this to the world right now. But at little more than 12% of the current market and a plethora of technical criticism about its lack of gadgets and apps, Blackberry has a lot of PR ahead.

Unless Microsoft and RIM take the market by surprise, it looks like Google and Apple are going to battle it out with each other and continue to eat up their minor competitors’ markets.
