  • While it might be true that Sprint is the only network in the entire country that makes use of a 4G WiMax, they have to be wary since it has now been revealed that T-mobile also catching up to them with their recently launched HSPA+ network. For those unaware, the HSPA+ network is capable of reaching speeds on par with that of the 4G. But in all probability, how close is this network when you try to compare it to the WiMAX network? We recently conducted tests in Philadelphia and did exactly this. We put the 4G network of Sprint’s against the 4G data network of T-mobile.

While a total of six different locations in Philadelphia were used for the conducting of the tests, it was found that the WiMAX network boasted of an overall download speed of 4,066 kbps whereas the upload speed was around 978Kbps. On average, it was found that the WiMAX network had a download speed of 2785 kilobytes per second while the upload speed was 600 kbps. After that we tried the HSPA+ network of T-Mobile. When we tested it in one particular city, the overall download speed was 5442 kbps while the upload speed was 1880 kbps. On an average it was found that the overall download speed for the HSPA + network was 2960kbps whereas the upload speed on an average was 1283 kbps.

So if you compare the two, obviously the 4G network of T-mobile is the clear winner. If you're planning on testing both the networks by yourself, remember that the speed changes are minimal, real world events are attributed to the change and as such they cannot be controlled.

Over the past few months, both mobile carriers have been trying very aggressively in branding their name much more than the other. While a new infrastructure is being built for Sprint, T-mobile is doing whatever they can to allow Internet users much faster browsing connections.

  • Unlocked Google Nexus One’s Android operating system is by far one of the best to have hit the market in recent years. Now there is an additional benefit for users of the Android. DoubleTwist, the iTunes-aping desktop sync manager has created a media player specifically designed for the Android. Recently released, early user feedback for this media player has been very positive. The fact that it is freely available and can be used for playing video as well as music, having the ability of directly interacting with your computer has proved to be a great hit with users. In fact you can import your favorite play-lists, ratings as well as other media directly from your computer. There are also many other features that have been slated for release, although many of they might have to be paid for, such as widget control.

Considering the fact that Google Android has been one of the greatest successes to have hit Unlocked Mobile Phones and is now being seen as the future of most smart phones and tablet computers, it is not at all a surprise to find that many developers have started customizing their applications for this operating system. There are many advantages associated with using DoubleTwist’s media player such apart from the fact that it is completely free to use. It can also sync perfectly well with the iTunes play-lists you might have. In fact, you can even use the media player to sync with your iTunes videos. The transferring of play counts, ratings as well as other information such as lyrics and song artists can be easily done due to its perfect integration with your desktop computer. Other features involve the ability of using imported songs as ringtones from the application and the ability of controlling the application through earphone controls.

On the downside, the DoubleTwist player can only support music that has been pre-loaded on a SD card which might pose a problem should you be using an HTC.

  • The Disable Friendly iPhone
Posted on June 8, 2010 by Pure Mobile

There are many that suffer from some form of disability or the other and as such, it becomes quite difficult for such persons to use cell phones. If you are one such individual who suffers from some form of vision or hearing loss, you know what a great frustration it is when trying to making use of the latest technological innovations. However, today there are many mobile companies that have taken this into consideration and have started manufacturing mobile phones that can be more accessible to people with disabilities. The perfect example of this is the Unlocked Apple iPhone that has been developed with different in built accessibility features.

If you wish to improve the functionality of the Unlocked iPhone for a disability, you can do the following.

    1. Visual Voicemail: Should you have some sort of difficulty in hearing, you can decide on using visual voicemail. Through this, you can have your messages read back to you. Consider for instance that there is some phone number being spoken, but you are unable to hear it clearly, you can use the visual voicemail to play it back at a much slower pace. It will be played in iTunes where you can continuously drag the slider back and forth to re read what it was you were unable to hear the first time.

    2. Closed Captioning: With closed captioning, you have the ability of having a message displayed at the bottom of any video currently being watched. Just go to options and make sure that “Closed Captioning” is turned on.

    3. Voice-Over: Voice-Over is a very beneficial feature that can be used by persons having a difficult time reading content on the screen. With Voice-Over, it is possible to have a voice read what is currently being shown on the screen of the phone. You can even use the touch screen feature together with the Voice-Over functionality.

  • Cell phone Swipe Cards
Posted on June 8, 2010 by Pure Mobile

Whenever you visit any fast food restaurant, one of the most common scenarios is that of seeing people more attached to their Unlocked Mobile Phones rather than what they are eating. You will find them protecting their cell phones from even the slightest amount of grease and oil just so that they can use it to communicate or play a game. Now with different advances in technology, it has become possible to do much more from your cell phone, such as checking into a hotel, booking rooms and now, even opening doors.

Now instead of having to visit the front desk of any hotel to confirm your booking of any rooms, you can do the very same thing all from the comfort of the interiors of the hotel. No longer will you have to stand in line in a queue behind confused customers wondering whether your turn is going to come or not. Newely created software allows you to do just this. It can open doors for you without you having to wait in line for your swipe card.

Tested on two different American Holiday Inns, this new application promises a complete change in the way we can book and confirm our reservations. Making use of a “unique audio code,” your Unlocked Cell Phone can act like your very own swipe card. The only downfall associated with this application is that it is newly designed software; chances are that there will be many different bugs present in the software. Also, since the code is being played from an e-mail, you will have to progress through at least 3 different steps to make sure that you have the right combination for opening your door lock. At the same time, since the entire process works on the microphone capability of the doorknob, you need to ensure that there is no disturbance in the vicinity when making use of your swipe card cell phone.

Approximately 1 million people are expected to be covered under the new scheme devised by CLEAR for central Washington D.C, with businesses as well as consumers being able to wirelessly access the internet at lightening fast connection speeds. Irrespective of where you are, whether on the bus or in the office, if you are located in a Wi-Fi zone, you can now access the internet through your mobile.

As part of a promotional offer, CLEAR has also launched, for a limited time period their internet services at a low cost of $15per month for the first two months with a service deposit of $50. Says Jeff, the general manager for CLEAR in Washington D.C, “We are extremely happy that today we have been able to bring the leading 4G service provider in the country to the capital city. We know how very important it is for visitors and residents in Washington to be able to experience very fast internet speeds, similar to what they are used to at the office or at home. CLEAR is the best you can get should you want to be able to experience the internet on the go.” With CLEAR, it now becomes possible to research all your assignments while moving around. CLEAR makes use of WiMAX, which is much faster than Wi-Fi due to its ability of being measured in miles and not feet

The combination of having the ability of accessing the internet on your phone while moving or travelling, through lightening fast speeds is what makes CLEAR the nation’s leading 4G network. It is no wonder then that they have decided to come to Washington.

  • Starting 7th June, AT&T has decided to get rid of its unlimited data Smartphone transfer plan and introduce different plans. The current $30 unlimited Unlocked Smartphone plan is soon to be depreciated with AT&T claiming that its new plans would be more affordable and more appreciative for people that make use of the internet on a regular basis. So what are these plans and are they really beneficial? We have analyzed them and give you the lowdown on what you really need to know about these plans.

DataPlus: Under this plan, AT&T plans of giving around 200MB of data transfer for $15. AT&T representatives claim that this plan will be sufficient for more than 65% of their Smartphone user database. In case you should choose this plan and go above the limit of 200MB, additional charges of the same amount for every additional 200MB will be charged.

DataPro: AT&T states that nearly 2% of its Smartphone users go over the 2GB limit of this plan. Charged at $25 per month, additional charges are $10 per GB.

There are even talks going on at AT&T  that claim those users wishing to have tethering on their DataPro plan can do so at an additional charge of $20 per month. This effectively results in you being able to share around 2 GB of data flow between your Smartphone and laptop for around $45 per month. Not bad, should you require the internet for simple mail checks. But there is a 5GB data transfer plan available for around $60 and together with tethering; the entire package costing $75.

Although you might not like any of the new plans that have come into existence, the new rates are much more user friendly allowing many AT&T Quickfire Unlocked Phone subscribers to now leverage the complete power of the internet and Smartphone. Of course, you could still decide to stick with the unlimited $30 data plan currently available.

  • Hollywood often portrays criminals as masterminds capable of plotting devious capers that evade all but the sharpest of crime fighters. In real life, however, that's rarely the case. In fact, most criminals are stupid and desperate. They are often their own worst enemy when it comes to avoiding arrest. Here's five examples of how something as simple as a cell phone foiled the plans of these “evil geniuses.”

#5 - If you're going to plan a crime, avoid doing so via text message.

First up is 17-year-old Christopher Franko, and his 16-year-old girlfriend, Dana Saltzman. On May 7, 2010, they were arrested for plotting to shoot up their high school. The plot was revealed in their text message history, with one message reading “May we kill as many as possible and teach these bastards a lesson."  Their obviously well-thought out plan included researching home-made bombs and attempting to purchase a shotgun, which they were turned down for because neither one was 18. Interesting side note, Franko was arrested and plead guilty to making similar plans back in 2007.

#4 - Think twice before you use a stolen cell phone to snap your own picture.

Our next criminal genius was caught in a similar fashion. 21-year-old Korey Woodard, with the help of some friends, jacked a cell phone from a University of Illinois student. Korey must have needed it to snap a new picture for his OK Cupid profile, because after he stole the phone, he connected it to his computer to transfer the pictures off the phone. What our fine young criminal failed to realize was the university student had his phone set to automatically upload all new pictures to his Facebook profile when it connects to a computer. Two days after the phone was stolen, a picture of Woodard's smiling face appeared on the victim's profile.

#3 - Before you mug someone, make sure your cell phone is securely holstered.

Four young men executed the perfect late night mugging. Derek Kelly, 22, Craig Speakman, 23, and their two 17-year-old underlings waited in the shadows until they spotted their victims. A 19 year old man and his 21 year old girlfriend were walking home after a quick run to a nearby store, when the four muggers stopped them at gun point. They pushed the two victims to the ground and pistol whipped the man into submission before making off with their wallets and recently purchased food. They would have gotten away with it, too, if it weren't for the cell phone that fell out of one of the assailant's pockets. In a stroke of pure genius, he decided to head back to the scene of the crime to pick it up where the suspects were arrested by police.

#2 - If you're going to hide your kidnapping victim in a booby trapped bunker, don't let her borrow your cell phone to play games.

In September of 2006, Vinson Filyaw abducted then-14-year-old Elizabeth Shoaf by posing as a police officer. After a long, disoriented walk through nearby woods, he locked Shoaf in an underground bunker near the trailer he lived in. There, only a mile away from her home, he held her in captivity for 10 days. He must have been sympathetic to the boredom his victim experienced living through a monotonous routine of repeated raping, because Filyaw let Shoaf borrow his cell phone to play games. After he fell asleep, she wasted no time in sending text messages to her mother and several friends. They contacted the police, who then triangulated her position from nearby cell towers. Filyaw fled after hearing he was under pursuit on his battery powered radio, and was later arrested.

#1 - If you're going to use prepaid cell phones to plot an international terrorist attack, switch to a new phone often.

What is it with terrorists lately? First, we've got the explosive underwear bomber in Detroit who only succeeded in blowing up his own pants. Now, the failed bombing of Times Square in New York. As if not having your bomb go off wasn't embarrassing enough, Faisal Shahzad was tracked down because of a prepaid cell phone he used while coordinating the attack. Instead of using multiple prepaid phones, Shahzad used one phone for the 12 days he spent making arrangements. Apparently, Shahzad didn't watch enough episodes of 24 to know that, though. This is probably the most ridiculous example of criminal stupidity in the list.

So there you have it. 5 shining cases where a cell phone was the downfall of law breakers. If you're going to delve into the world of crime, make sure you're smarter than they were. Let's review five things to avoid with your cell phone when breaking the law.

Don't plan your caper via text message.

Don't snap your picture with a stolen phone.

Don't forget to buy a holster for your phone.

Don't let your victims borrow your phone.

And remember to switch phones often to avoid being tracked down.

If you follow the above tips, your life of crime should be fruitful and free of police intervention.
