  • Dell Streak: Software
Posted on November 15, 2010 by Pure Mobile

In this article, we will be reviewing the software of the new Dell Streak.  This is Dell’s second unlocked cellphones that they have made.  The final firmware is said to perform a lot smoother and is also a lot more stable than the prototype.  Dell has also said that they plan to put their own skin over the Android 1.6 OS.  The homes screen icons will be in shaded boxes, the menu will drop down from the top and can also shrink to a favorites bar.  On the top bar, you will be given a home screen switching button, a status area, and a notifications area.  All of these can be used by just a tap instead of a drag action.

One thing that many people are disappointed with the Streak is the call dialer.  Many people have reported that it looks really cheap and not very professional.  These can be harsh words, but I guess people expect for it to have a really cool layout.  It looks about the same as the prototype with no real upgrades.  Many people have suggested that they make it so you can have a person’s picture next to their name, so you can easily recognize who is trying to contact you.  Unfortunately, they were not able to get this feature in their phone.  The Unlocked Streak also does not support smart-dialing.  However, we have really only seen HTC offering that feature on its Android phones, so you can’t really expect much.  One feature that you can use on this phone is to say a name into the phone’s microphone, and the person’s name will pop right back up.  For example, if you are wanting to call your friend John, then you can just say his name into your phone, and it will come up.  Other than the dialer, all of the features seem to be pretty good.

  • Motorola Shows Video of Droid 2
Posted on November 15, 2010 by Pure Mobile

Just in case you have not been excited enough about the release of the Unlocked Motorola Milestone Droid 2, then you can continue reading this to get even more excited.  All this previous excitement, of course, came from all of the products commercial appearances, photos, videos, web appearances, rebate forms, etc.  This handset has definitely got a ton of publicity over the past few months, so obviously there have been a lot of people excited about it coming out.  Recently, people have received yet another teaser of the Droid 2.

Motorola has just recently posted a hype-video on YouTube showing the computing prowess of their new popular handset.  Even though most of the features of this phone have already been expressed in several different advertisement forms, you can probably brush up your memory by watching this video.  People that have watched the video say that it includes some more stuff that they have not learned about yet, so it would definitely be worth watching in my opinion.

So far, the video has over 22,000 views with several different comments.  Motorola certainly has a niche for being able to make people excited about their products.  You can place a safe bet that this product will be flying off the shelves upon its release.  Unfortunately, some countries such as Germany will not be selling the Motorola Milestone Droid 2 Unlocked as of yet.  As you can guess, even Germans are excited to get their hands on the product.  Many are quite jealous as well that they will not be able to for some time though.  There has been no official release date yet for this product, but many people expect that it will be out very soon.  Kick back, watch the video, and get even more excited.  Before you know it, you will finally get your hands on this knock out product.

  • According to a leading unlocked cell phone blog, Apple’s Ping, which is a music social network, is getting integrated with Twitter.  Twitter actually just announced the other day that users of Ping and Twitter will be able to link their accounts from within iTunes.  Once they link their accounts, they will be able to let others know which bands they listen to, along with their favorite songs and albums.  They will also be able to review them.  All activity on Ping will be tweeted to your Twitter account, so all of your followers can see it.

If you are unfamiliar about Ping, then you are not alone.  Just recently, Apple CEO Steve Jobs sent out an email the other day to all of his iTunes users letting people know about his social networking site.  He reported that Ping already has millions of users and that it is growing fast.  Many could be quite skeptical of his growing fast comment though since he had to send out this e-mail.  However, this does sound like a social networking site to look into.

Since many people have not heard of Ping, it is definitely not the most popular social networking site.  The concept of this site is that people would get on there and be able to discuss music with others.  They could follow people to see what they were listening to, and they can also follow different artists to check out the new songs that they released.  It would basically be a variation of Facebook, Twitter, and iTunes combined.  You would get to meet other people, mostly based on having similar tastes in music.  It does have a good idea by letting people share their tastes in music, but it really has never taken off as far as Apple would have liked it to.  You can assume it has gained popularity over the past couple of weeks though.

  • Using the iPhone 4 for Multi-Tasking
Posted on November 12, 2010 by Pure Mobile

A major issue that other users had with other editions of the iPhone is that when they came out they did not provider the users with the ability to multi-task. Several telephones sold then already offered multi-tasking features, and users did not get why Apple decided to forgo this capability in favor of others. The answer to this question was obvious after we examined the multi-tasking capabilities that are available on the unlocked iPhone 4.
Switch from one App to Another Fast

The multi-tasking capabilities of the iPhone 4 provides users with a way to switch from one app to another app simply and fast and all that must be done is to double click on the button located at the bottom of the phone. This is the home button. When this button is clicked, a shortcut list will pop up that will show the apps that the user has utilized recently. Think about the fact that you could switch to the iPhone app from Pandora in the event that you cannot locate a song you want to listen to. In addition, you are going to be able to go from a game you are currently playing to your Internet browser if you want to see how your team is doing or to read a current headline or two.
Pick Up Right Where You Left Off

The Multi-tasking capabilities of the iPhone 4 also lets you pick up at the exact point you stopped with all apps. This means you can return to the YouTube clip you left without fast forwarding to that spot, or you can start a game at the point you stopped. Right when you return to the app, your position will be right where you were when you had to leave.
Listen to Tunes as You do Other Tasks

You probably would like to have the ability to listen to music on your iPod, on YouTube, or on another app as you do other tasks on your phone. You would not have been able to do this with other editions of the iPhone, and as such, this was a hot topic among users who wished they had this feature. Now you will be able to listen to your tunes as you do other tasks on your phone like browse the Internet or check your email.
Have GPS Apps Running While You do Other Tasks

Many users utilize their iPhones to get directions to somewhere and for music, which wasn't possible to do simultaneously with previous versions. Because the GPS app could not be used at the same time as you were listening to music on your iPhone, you probably missed your exit more than once. However, the newest version iPhone 4 unlocked will allow you to run your GPS app to receive the right directions even if you are listening to music. This feature will lower the level of your music automatically whenever it provides new directions.

  • Some users have worried aloud whether or not the Unlocked Sony Ericsson Aspen Windows Phone 7 marketplace will have enough apps available to satisfy the app-craving users of smart mobile devices. It now appears that this question has been answered, and the developer community is getting behind the Windows Phone 7 project. Today, the company announced that they already have more than 2,000 apps that will be available in the marketplace. Initial worries about developer support seem to have fallen by the wayside as the interest in developing applications for the platform has skyrocketed in recent months.

The announcement came on The Windows Phone Developer Blog, a blog that is geared toward increasing interest in developing for the platform. News that the marketplace has already been populated with 2,000 apps is a big sign that the marketplace will continue to grow quickly as developers attempt to expand the number of platforms that their apps are available on.

The 2,000 mark is double what the company was hoping to have secured at this point. The Marketplace is currently open for developers to submit applications to. Currently there are a total of 13,000 registered developers for Windows Phone 7, which first launched on Monday. Users that have already purchased their Windows Phone 7 devices should be elated to hear this news because it means that they can expect more apps to be rapidly added to the marketplace in the coming weeks as Microsoft attempts to sift through the submissions.

Success of the Windows Phone 7 platform will depend heavily on the ability of the company to garner interest in developing for it, and this announcement seems to suggest that Microsoft has been doing a good job of that. It will be interesting to watch the Windows Phone 7 Marketplace grow in the coming months as more devices are released for the platform.

  • Hasbro to Bring 3D to iPhone and iTouch
Posted on November 11, 2010 by Pure Mobile

With 3D becoming such a sought after product trend across a number of different markets, it is no surprise that someone went out of their way to develop technology that would allow unlocked  iPhone 4 and iPod’s to be viewed in 3D. It was recently announced that Hasbro will be releasing a $30 pair of goggles called My3D which allows users to view 3D images on the screens of their smart phones.

It is interesting that Hasbro developed a piece of technology specifically for Apple products, but it is hard to imagine that anyone would find much use in the My3D goggles. First of all, they have to be held up, not only to your eyes, but also to the screen that you are looking at. The design of the My3D goggles is eerily similar to the design of the ViewMaster that was popular throughout the 1980’s and 1990’s.

The device is said to be geared toward both children and adults, and the company may try to expand the functionality of the goggles by developing other uses for them. The goggles look very similar to a set of binoculars in design. The front of the goggles have a slot that allows you to attach your iPod or iPhone to the device so that you can easily see the 3D screen. Only certain apps in the app store will even be compatible with the new device, so do not expect to play your current games or apps using My3D goggles. This could be the start of a trend in the development of 3D applications and games for the iPhone 4 unlocked and other devices, but likely will not take off until there is a more comfortable solution for viewing.

With an increasing number of 3D products being developed across a plethora of different industries, you should expect to see more products similar to the My3D Goggles in an attempt to capitalize on the growing 3D trend.

  • Android 2.1 Comes to Motorola CLIQ
Posted on November 11, 2010 by Pure Mobile

Android 2.1 is finally being offered for the Motorola Cliq. The version of the popular operating system that is just now finally being offered for the phone first was released on January 5th of this year. At the time, Motorola said that the upgrade would be offered for the phone at some point, but did not give a timeline for when they were going to roll it out. At the time, it seemed as if many users were expecting the upgrade in a fairly timely fashion. A number of other unlocked cell phones quickly offered the upgrade including the Google Nexus One, a comparable phone that did not receive the upgrade until the 11th of January.

Nearly an entire year later, the Motorola Cliq will finally be receiving the upgrade that users have been expecting. It is strange that it took them so long to roll out the upgrade for the Cliq. The logical explanation is that Motorola’s focus has shifted so far away from the dated phone that they were just never willing to dedicate the man power to ensuring that the upgrade was offered in a timely fashion.

It is not clear what exactly prompted them to offer the upgrade at this time. Perhaps it is the fact that they promised the upgrade to their users nearly a year ago? Would allowing users to pay for updates force the company to get these key operating system updates out to their customers is a feasible amount of time? At this time there really seems to be no clear answers, but the time it took for Motorola to offer the upgrade to 2.1 for the Cliq is a prime example of the neglect that older smart phones receive when technology has passed them by. Hopefully the company will be more prompt with their updates and upgrades in future phones, even when outdated.

  • The CEO and founder of Forrester research, George Colony recent said in a blog post that he thought that the CEO of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, was a “one trick pony” and that he thought that he was overrated in Silicon Valley. Colony claimed that the statement was made because Zuckerberg has been unwilling to change Facebook’s looks and functionality throughout the its history. It is true that Zuckerberg has been reluctant to make huge, sweeping changes in his interface, but with good reason; every time Facebook changes its layout and functionality a large portion of the user base complains about the changes through their status updates.

Throughout his blog post, Colony continues to take shots at Zuckerberg, claiming that he has the “raw material to be a great CEO,” but went on to say that Zuckerberg must first demonstrate that he can turn Facebook into the revenue generating machine that many feel that it should be. Facebook did not post a profitable quarter until several years after it was created, after the site implemented its current advertising system.

Colony seems to think that Zuckerberg should be willing to go out on a limb with his 500 million person user base and explore different ways of monetizing the site. Of course, this can be tricky, as we saw with MySpace where ads and functionality issues seemingly ran many of the users off of the site. Colony might be jumping the gun a bit with this blog post. Other revered CEO’s, such as Steve Jobs, had over a decade to prove how worthy they were to their companies and went on to develop some of the most game-changing ideas in the technology space.

It is strange that Colony would choose to criticize Zuckerberg so publicly, and seemingly toot his own horn. What is the point that Colony was attempting to make, and does he expect it to be well received by the younger generation in the tech community?

  • A number of different websites are reporting that Apple has made the move to purchase Wi-Gear, a small company that is based in the San Francisco area that specializes in creating Bluetooth headsets. At the time of the breaking news, no dollar amount had been placed on the acquisition. What does this say about the direction that Apple is taking? Some have speculated that the purchase of the company means that Apple will be looking at developing a number of Bluetooth headphones under the Apple brand name. Shortly after it was announced that Wi-Gear was purchased by Google, a number of sources within the company were quoted as saying that the deal has not happened as of yet, but there is a possibility that it could happen in the near future.

The previous brand name of the headphones that were developed by Wi-Gear was iMuffs. The company also specialized in creating Bluetooth adapters that allowed older versions of iPod’s and iPhones to utilize features that are associated with Bluetooth.

The former co-founder of Wi-Gear is currently working at Apple as a Bluetooth Engineer for the iOS system, and his presence in the company may have contributed to the purchase of Wi-Gear. It is not currently clear if Apple is looking to replace the wired headsets that typically come with any of their devices that are used for music, or if they will be developing a completely new Bluetooth product all together. What this does say though is that the company is looking to put more emphasis on the Bluetooth features of their products. It will be exciting to see what direction the company heads in regards to Bluetooth development and the role it plays in future iPhone and iPod devices.

It is clear that Apple is looking to expand the Bluetooth features on their unlocked iphone 4, and now, if the acquisition of Wi-Gear turns out to be true, the question becomes; what will they use their newly acquired company to develop?

  • Unlocked iPhone 4 HD Camera
Posted on November 10, 2010 by Pure Mobile

The ability to record HD video with the unlocked iPhone 4 is something that truly sets it apart from the competition. No matter where you go you will be able to capture HD video of any landscape in front of you. It has been one of the biggest draws for the phone. The back of the phone also features an illumination sensor that delivers high quality video both in low and bright settings, ensuring that you always get the shot that you intended on.

Edit Your Videos on Your iPhone 4

Most phones that are able to capture video require that you transfer the video file back to your phone before you are able to edit it. The iPhone 4 has built in technology that allows you to edit the video through the camera app, directly after the video has been recorded. You can even set start and end points for the video as soon as it has been shot so that you do not have to take up extra hard drive space with excess video files.
Use the iMovie App To Produce Finished Movies

The iMovie app is one of the most popular apps dealing with video and the iPhone 4. At just $4.99, the iMovie app allows you to edit each video that you shoot into separate video clips, as well as polish your movies and add borders and background to give it that finished quality.

Along with the high definition camera that can be found on the back of the iPhone 4, the device also offers a VGA quality camera on the front of your phone so that you can take video of yourself or take a portrait shot while being able to see exactly what you are shooting on the screen on the phone.

Once you have taken the video, the iPhone 4 makes it easy for you to quickly send it through messages and other apps to anyone of your choosing. All you have to do is tap on the camera icon in your “messages” app, and then click on MMS, which will place the movie in a message that you can then send to friends of yours that are able to receive movies through MMS.

The iPhone 4 unlocked handset has revolutionized the way that video is shared and recorded. The HD camera allows you to capture any moment, even when you forgot to bring a camera.
