  • AT&T Connects To Amazon App Store
Posted on March 27, 2011 by Pure Mobile

With the company behind the ultra popular Angry Birds releasing an Amazon App Store for unlocked cell phone exclusive new update for the game, AT&T is looking to enable purchases through the app store as well. This would be the first time that they have budged from only allowing users to download things from their own app store. AT&T has never previously allowed anything like this, and this should serve as a small shift in strategy for the company. They will be allowing their branded Android devices to have access to the Amazon App Store for the first time in the history of the company.

AT&T released a statement saying that they were looking to allow users to access third party app stores, but also said that they were going to have to finish the agreements with Amazon first, and promised to share more information with their users at some point in the near future.

Hopefully Angry Birds Rio, and other apps that are exclusively offered through the Amazon App Store will make their way to AT&T branded Android devices here soon. The announcement came as a bit of a surprise because AT&T has been mostly steadfast in their strategies prior to this, and this serves as a big change in the way that they do business.

In order for this to happen there will likely have to be some sort of widespread update to the firmware, but the company has not confirmed this at this time. Could this be the first step in opening up the door for third party app stores in the future. They do already exist but have not been able to maintain much leverage with most carriers not allowing direct access to them. Hopefully this is the start of a change in the way that business is done within AT&T moving forward.

  • Logitech was recently seen hiring Android developers for what they described as a ground breaking upcoming release. While it is not currently clear whether or not this is the groundbreaking release they referenced, the company is releasing a new Squeezebox app for Android users such as unlocked Sony Ericsson Xperia X10, LG Eve GW620, etc  that will allow users to remotely control their Squeezebox. The app will utilizes a Wi-Fi connection and will allow users to use all of the usual controls that were not previously available in remote format.

The app will also utilize the album artwork for whatever music you are playing at the current time. It will be interesting to see if htis is the groundbreaking release that they previously referenced. The app will only be available for Android 2.1 or later. The app will reportedly work with the Squeezebox Touch, Squeezebox Boom and Squeezebox Duet.

The app is already available in the market, and more details can be found on the Logitech website, outlining all of the different uses that are included in the application. A full description is available there as well. It is good to see Logitech releasing applications for the Squeezebox which is a device that has received a lot of press over the course of the last few months, and many users were eagerly awaiting the release of an official remote app, since the device primarily works as an end-table music provider.

Now Logitech fans can start speculating about the hiring of the android developers. The description of the job on their website seemed to suggest a much larger project than a simple remote app, but the company has not had many releases within the Android market so this could be the project that they were referencing after all. Logitech will probably not publicly address the issue, especially if this is not the project that they were referencing.

  • Google Search App Gets New Toolbar
Posted on March 20, 2011 by Pure Mobile

Google is always trying to find ways to innovate their apps and make them more user friendly. Now, instead of having to navigate through their text links on their website, they have updated their app to include a side bar that will give you access to all of the popular Google sub domains that help you to strengthen your searching capabilities.

The new sidebar for the app looks very much like the sidebar that you see on your Unlocked Sony Ericsson Xperia X10a when you make a search in your browser on your desktop on Google. You can easily navigate between “everything,” which will show you images, news, blogs, videos, and websites all on the same search yield. The sidebar also allows you to narrow your search down to precisely what you are looking for. This means that if you are specifically searching for an image or a video, you can easily select the option on the sidebar, just as you would do on their website, normally, and have your searches filtered.

This added functionality should make many users happy. The company also released a video demonstration of their app update. The update, as of right now is only being rolled out on iOS devices, but expect it to become available for all mobile OS at some point in the near future.

some have stated that the side bar takes up too much of the screen, but Google addressed this by allowing you to slide the search results screen over the sidebar when you are sifting through the search results. This should make the entire app much more easily navigable, and the added functionality is something that Unlocked Samsung Nexus S Google users have been waiting for for quite some time. Before, you had to work your way through their text links as you would on the normal Google homepage to narrow down your search results. This was cumbersome, and many users found it to not be worth their time in the long run.

  • Sony Ericsson Play Review
Posted on March 16, 2011 by Pure Mobile

The unlocked Sony Ericsson XPERIA Play is a device that has been ever-present in the media in recent years, and for good reason. At first, it looked as if the device would be the first official PlayStation branded mobile device on the market. Now it is clear that the phone will actually have the XPERIA branding instead, but that hasn’t stopped it from gaining steam as the first official gaming oriented smart device on the market.

The phone looks sleek, and features a four inch touchscreen device, accompanied by a slide out gamepad that will easily allow you to switch between the touchscreen and game pad while you are playing games. Some have compared the Sony Ericsson Play to the PSP Go, but from our hands on experience, we can say that the Play is much more advanced that the Go.

The software is easy to use, and runs on the most recent version of the Android system. Although the official version of the device that is out there is not the official version so nothing can be taken as a certain flaw in the design of the device, but some have reported that the device requires at least one reboot per day to maintain its quick surfing ability.

In order to play games on the version that is currently out there, you have to load an emulator and use a ROM, so that does not really give you a good idea of the quality that you can expect from titles in the XPERIA Play unlocked official marketplace, but from what we have seen the handling on the games is great and is very intuitive and easy to use.

It is easy to see why the XPERIA Play has become so popular in recent months leading up to the release of the device - with or without the official Playstation branding.

  • Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc Review
Posted on March 15, 2011 by Pure Mobile

Sony Ericsson has announced a number of devices that have been highly anticipated since the original announcements. The unlocked Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc is one that has received a lot of attention since it was first announced but has not received quite as much attention as the XPERIA Play that was announced just over a year ago. The design of the Arc is very sleek - if you were to describe it in one word. It features an inward curvature that is meant to mimic the shape of the human hand. It is very comfortable to hold for long periods of time. The width of the phone is just 8.7 millimeters.

The front keys on the phone are physical and are not touch screen, which has produced some problems with phones in the past. This makes it easy to hit them without having to physically look at the phone, which was a problem with the X10 and Vivaz U8a unlocked, which were previously released.

The phone will not have any kind of video calling functionality, despite the fact that it was included in Google’s Android 2.3, which is the software that the phone is running. Although this is not a huge feature lack, it could keep some users from going with the Arc when there are other devices available that make use of the video calling function that is included in Android 2.3.

Typing on the touchscreen keyboard is not all that hard. The buttons are large, and the touch screen is quite accurate. In test runs, there were not a lot of mistakes found when typing, but as with any smart phone it can be difficult to always hit the right areas on the phone when texting quickly.

The price of the unlocked Xperia Arc will depend heavily on the plan that you choose. It is another solid offering from Sony Ericsson who is looking to step up their number of mid-tier smart phone offerings this year and offer more to mid-range budget users.

  • Sony Ericsson has not been shy about their expansion into Android powered devices. In fact, some of their most anticipated phones, including the Xperia Play and the Arc will run on the Android Platform. High ranking officials within the company have stated that it is their goal to become the number one handset provider specifically for the Android platform, but that does not mean that they are not looking to invest in other operating systems as well.

It now looks as though they are planning on release a device for Windows Phone 7 such has LG C900, HTC HD7 unlocked, etc. The device, which had pictures of it leak, shows a slide out QWERTY keyboard, along with a touch screen phone that is running on the Windows Phone 7 operating system.

Windows Phone 7 is known for requiring quite a bit in terms of hardware, and the device which is only known as “Julie” right now reportedly features a 1 GHz processor that should be more than capable of running the Windows Phone 7 Operating System.

So, while Sony Ericsson has openly admitted that they are focusing on the expansion of their Android devices that does not necessarily mean that they are going to be neglecting other operating systems as well. As Windows Phone 7 continues to climb in popularity, look for more b ig handset manufacturing companies to release devices for the OS.  Although Android might be the trendy choice at this point. Windows Phone 7 provides a very usable alternative that is well made, easy to use and is a huge upgrade for users of previous Windows phones.

It will be interesting to see if they continue to expand farther into the Windows Phone 7 arena, or if they continue to focus on expanding into Android. Either way, Microsoft has to be happy with the progress of their operating system which has slowly become one of the more popular options available for handset manufacturers.

  • The first commercial for the XPERIA Play has made its way online in recent days, just in time for some Superbowl action. The unlocked cell phone is one that Sony Ericsson has not publicly acknowledged since it was first announced online. The new Xperia play commercial shows the Android logo getting a back room procedure to give it thumbs, presumably so that it can use the controller interface for the XPERIA Play.

The commercial did not give any information about the pricing or release date of the phone. But, the fact that they are starting to push and promote it means that you can probably expect some information to come out at the MWC in just a few weeks.

The XPERIA Play has had a number of videos leak of it being used. Of course, the phones and devices in the video are probably just prototypes, and with the hype surrounding the phone you can expect the specs to be bulked up. As of right now, all signs point to the unconfirmed specs being a 1 GHZ Qualcomm Snapdrogon processor, a slide out controller with joysticks for playing the games, a 5 megapixel camera that can record HD video quality, and a large 4 inch touchscreen that should be great for playing your favorite games from the recently announced Sony game marketplace.

So far Sony has not given out much information regarding the potential games that you could see for the device, but it is believed that PSP games might be added to their Sony Game Suite for the launch of the XPERIA Play. The game suite will also reportedly feature a number of different third party games, specifically designed for Android devices such as Xpeia X10 unlocked. Expect more details about the device to become available in the coming week, especially with the first commercial leaked.

  • As per one of the leading Unlocked Cell Phone Blog Site, Sprint has announced that they will be now allowing customers to roam abroad on 4G networks where they are available. The roaming so far is limited to Digicel, which is located in Jamaica, and Global Mobile, which is currently located in Taiwan. The devices will utilize the Sprint SmartView Connection Manager, which will allow the devices to detect when they are within reach of the networks. They will be able to connect to the roaming service utilizing a 24 hour day long pass for just $14.99. The announcement makes Sprint the first company to offer international 4G Roaming.

The partnership goes to show that Sprint is committed to advancing their 4G support where applicable. The manager will allow for users to also utilize their Sprint connection, or international 4G roaming connection to connect to their desktops as well.

“We are excited to be Sprint’s first 4G roaming partner in Asia and looking forward to extending this alliance to our partners around the world,” said Rosemary Ho, who is the CEO of Global Mobile.

The partnership is the first of its kind to involve 4G networks and will allow for users to internationally roam on 4G networks. The current Sprint 4G network is found in 71 different markets in the Untied States. These markets include some very large cities including Los Angeles, Chicago, Denver, Houston and New York City. Sprint has continually expanded their 4G coverage, and is expected to continue their rapid expansion rate well into 2011.

Although their international 4G roaming features are limited, you can take this announcement as the first of more to come that will hopefully expand their 4G coverage to other areas of the globe in the coming months. Digicel is currently offering 4G coverage in more than 32 different markets across the Caribbean, and Central America.

  • One rumor from the past few weeks in the cell phone industry was that the Unlocked Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 successor was in development after photos of the device surfaced in China. Now, it appears that a second photo of the rumored device has leaked online. This time, the phone is not on so it can be a little hard to tell if it is a knock off or a fake. If it is, it is a very high quality knock off. The keyboard looks very spacious, the device does have the full “Sony Ericsson” and “XPERIA” branding, and looks to be very high quality.

Of course, all of this is hard to confirm without being able to see what it looks like with the screen on. The X10 Mini Pro, as it has been unofficially dubbed would make an excellent addition to the already impressive Sony Ericsson lineup of smart mobile devices. Users would be ecstatic to get their hands on a smaller version of the wildly popular Sony Ericsson X10, as the company probably would have addressed some of the more major issues that were seen with the X10.

The phone will reportedly be very high powered, although no exact figures have been confirmed by the company at this time. In fact, they have not even announced that the phone is in the development stages so you should wait for an official announcement before you mark a release date down on your calendar. Hopefully the rumors of a high powered processor are true. You can bet that the Xperia X10 Mini Pro unlocked would at least see some improvements over the specs that were offered with the original phone. It will be interesting to see when they announce its development, and also how well it is received by users.

  • The Playstation Phone, also known as the Unlocked Sony Ericsson (XPERIA Play), has been seen in a number of videos over the course of the last few months. Now, another video of the highly anticipated phone has surfaced online, showing an individual playing BioHazard 2. The early impressions of the phone are pretty sweet. Although some have argued that it appears to be underpowered for a gaming phone after frame rate tests suggested that it put out a lower frame rate than the  iPhone  and other top of the line smart phones, the game that was played in the video looks great, and appeared to run very smoothly.

The hardware that the phone features has not been released yet, but sources have confirmed that the company is looking into bulking up the phone to make it more powerful. In the video, the games that the user was planning had to be loaded through an app called ROM buddy, which allows you to play ROMs on Android devices.

Even though the games were not originally designed for the XPERIA Play device, they still looked very good and were responsive to the phones controls. It is surprising that Sony is the first company to target gamers with a smart phone release that comes complete with a controller. Although gaming has been very popular on phones like the iPhone 4 unlocked and popular Android offerings, the genre’s of games suffered from a lack of a comprehensive control. Controlling a first person shooter on a touch screen can be very difficult, and the XPERIA Play should open up a variety of different types of games to users. Although no information regarding price or release dates has been put out by Sony at this time, it appears that the development of the phone is going into overdrive, especially with all of the unofficial videos showing its use out there.
