  • The Samsung Unlocked Phone “SCH-1520” is a handset without a name. To most, that might make it a Little less ape paling, but that certainly doesn’t mean that it doesn’t come with a host of features that most would love to have for the price of the phone. The best part about the phone is obviously the display. Its 4.3 inch touch screen display is among the best out there, with a beautiful AMOLED display that makes every screen look unbelievably crisp and sharp.

The phone also comes with a 1 GHz processor as well as an 8 megapixel rear facing camera, and a 1.3 megapixel front facing camera. This will enable the phone to partake in the various video chat apps that are available for Android 2.2, the software that the phone will run on. So while you have to feel kind of bad for a phone that is referred to by its model number, or simply as the “Samsung 4G LTE Smartphone” as Verizon referred to it in their press release, you can’t say that they skimped on the features this time around.

Although the focus of the hand set should be on the excellent Super AMOLED Plus screen that delivers everything in crystal clear clarity, it also has a wonderful design that make it easy to hold, use, and comfortable in the hand. These, combined with the fact that the phone boasts a completely open HDMI out port have made it an unlikely hit at the Consumer Electronics Show this year. It will be interesting to see how the phone continues to gain popularity as more become aware of the great features, despite the fact that it does not yet have a name. The phone is expected to be released during the first two quarters of 2011, so expect it to have some sort of official branding here soon.

  • LG unlocked cell phone has allowed for several hands on reviews of their new Optimus Black and Optimus 2X devices. Just before the Consumer Electronics Show, it is clear that most companies will be looking to build hype for their devices and one of the most popular trends for this year is to allow hands on review of these devices.

The Optimus 2X was the star of the hands on review, featuring a NVideo Tegra 2 dual core processor that runs at 1GHz in each of the cores. It is a very powerful mobile device that should be at the forefront of pushing the envelope forward. And offering processors that are the strength that was normally reserved for computers. The graphics on the device looked great, as did the screen. It is able to handle all that is asked of it from Android and moves very smoothly from one screen to another. The HDMI out port looks great when it is connected to displays up to 42 inches in size and no quality is lost on the conversion.

The Optimus Black also received rave reviews. It’s 1 GHz OMAP3630 processor paled in comparison to the Tegra, but was still plenty powerful to run Android and all that it requires. It is much thinner than the Tegra, and as a result is much more light. It is a well-manufactured and designed device that fits comfortably in the pocket.

The Optimus Blacks were also running Froyo, which is a highly hyped version of the Android operating system that allows the device to connect to other Android devices and transfer files peer to peer through long range connections. It also has a front facing, 2 megapixel camera that allows you to video chat as has become popular with many other devices.

Overall, both devices looked great and provided the features that everyone was looking for, exceeding expectations in the case of the 2x.

  • Although the announcement comes a few days after their predicted January 1st 10 million sales mark, it appears that Samsung has been able to do so in the days following the turn of the New Year. They were at a total of 9.3 million sales in the middle of December and estimates stated that they would not be reaching the 10 million mark until later this month, but it appears that the holiday season was good to Samsung, allowing them to put out a total of 10 million Galaxy S devices to their users since the mobile device was first released.

The sales figure was very impressive, and shows that Samsung is a legit competitor for Apple and the unlocked iPhone 4. It is the only mobile device other than the iPhone to reach that sales mark in the modern day mobile industry. The only other phone to hit the mark was the Samsung Star. The Star was able to hit the mark in a total of six months making it the fastest selling Samsung device ever released, but the Samsung Galaxy S appears as if it may have more longevity than the Star did.

The Unlocked Samsung Galaxy S is sold on most of the largest mobile providers in the world so it should presumably continue to sell well for quite some time, especially with all of the great press that Samsung will receive for reaching the 10 million sales mark. The popularity of the Samsung S can be attributed to the great processor, excellent marketing and customer service that Samsung has come to be known for in the mobile space. Recent rumors have stated that Samsung could be looking to release a dual core model of the S sometime this year, hopefully that comes to fruition and continues to boost the sales of the device.

  • Android Market Adds AT&T Billing App
Posted on December 28, 2010 by Pure Mobile

Google has announced that they will be releasing a new feature for their marketplace along with a number of applications. As of now, the AT&T Direct Carrier Billing application is now available to AT&T customers that are using some of the multiple Android devices such has HTC Desire, Samsung Captivate i897 unlocked on their network. The service would let users use their accounts, and connect them with their AT&T billing accounts to allow them to more easily pay their mobile bills.

App purchases now can be billed to their provider accounts, allowing them to pay their app bills in bulk at the end of the month. This benefits both the user and the company because it allows users to run up larger tabs on apps when they do not realize what they have spent, but also allows the users to take care of their app payments in bulk, one time at the end of the month. This is a service that has become increasingly common over the course of the last few months, and the AT&T implementation is something that has been rumored for a very long time.

The app was made available to T-Mobile subscribers earlier in the month. Google will likely explore similar opportunities in the near future because this sort of subscription service will definitely increase app sales on mobile devices. Allowing users to not see the damages until the end of the month, or at least delay their payments on a credit-style system and including them in with their provider bills will make the payment process easier but will also make it easier for them to overspend.

It will be interesting to see how well the customers respond to a move like this. It is a drastic change in the way that business is done in the mobile space and will take some getting used to on the user end of the spectrum.

  • The Tonino Lamborghini Evoluzione will be running on the Android operating system and will provide users with capabilities that were not in the previous version of the device. Although most in the industry consider the unlocked cell phone to be a tad bit overpriced, there is no denying the service that comes with the Evoluzione. The Lamborghini smart devices have been considered to be very high quality, and are more so for the crowd that is looking for a richer smart device experience.

The phone only comes with a 3.2 inch HVGA display, and runs on a 600 MHz processor which will make the device undeniably underpowered when compared to some of the other big brand names phones that have been released in recent weeks. the phone certainly does not live up to its automotive name, and does not provide what you would expect from something that has a Lamborghini brand name.

The phone will cost a total of $600, which is more than $700 reduced from the previous price. But even at $600, you are still paying a lot more for the brand name than you ever would the phone. It would be more worth the money if they were able to offer a little incentive to purchase the phone. For the price, you would expect a Lamborghini to have some sort of sleek design that would make it stand out from the crowd, but that is not the case here. The phone, by all accounts, other than the name of course is about as plain as they come. Although they will be marketed to those that own their cars, they will also be available for purchase for individuals that do not own a Lamborghini motor vehicle as well. Don’t expect this phone to gain much in the way of popularity; the price tag is simply too high.

  • Apple Looks to Hire for iOS Development
Posted on December 21, 2010 by Pure Mobile

It looks as though apple might be gearing up to take a run at the infamous Google Maps app for iOS devices like unlocked iphone 4, ipad & ipod. A recent job posting to their website calls for individuals with “computational geometry or graph theory,” as well as individuals that have substantial experience with navigation software. The company could be developing something else, but with the popularity of Google maps on the iOS platform and the very open competition between the companies, it looks as though they might be taking a page out of Google’s book and developing their own branded solution that will be eerily similar to something that is already out there on the market.

With a little bit of guesswork you can see that Apple might be looking to integrate some sort of GPS app into the future updates for the platform. They certainly know how much these types of things can generate, with so many of their most successful apps being related to GPS features.

Apple has not made any announcement regarding what the hiring could mean. Of course, anything is possible and they could be developing something completely different that we have not heard of yet. There was one previous occasion when the company brought some navigation experts on board, and nothing really ever came of it. It looks as though they might be willing to give that project a second shot, now that they have a new phone out and a software update that would allow them to focus on other features for a small period of time.

Google has yet to comment on the possibility that Apple could be looking to invade on the space that Google Maps occupies, but likely would not be happy to learn. Google is never a stranger to competition, and constantly releases solutions to compete with other brands, but now it looks as though they will get a taste of their own medicine.

  • As if the unlocked Samsung Galaxy Tab had not already received enough attention for being the first legit iPad competitor, the company announced today that it would be launching a “Luxury Edition” of the device after a good first month of sales. Rogers Vice President Josh Boynton recently was quoted as saying that the tabs were “selling out as fast as they could get them in their stores,” and it has been tough for consumers to find the device for the holiday season. The Luxury Edition of the Samsung Galaxy will not be released in time for the holiday season, but it will give those that are looking for the tablet computer another version to consider.

There will be no changes made to the Luxury Edition in terms of specs, which really will not make it all that hot of a commodity given the price hike. It will have the same standard Android 2.2 software running on it, same size display and 1 GHz processor, but will come with a nice leather case as well as a Bluetooth headset specially designed for use with the Galaxy Tab.

The one big change will be in price. It will reportedly cost as much as $1,000, which seems to be well out of the budget of most consumers who are looking for a Galaxy tab unlocked from Samsung. It is interesting that the price hike would be as steep as it is  when the only additions to the device will be a case and Bluetooth headset. It will be interesting to see how consumers respond. Most of them should realize that they can purchase their own case and headset for a much lower price than is being offered here by Samsung. Either way, it means that Samsung will be ramping up their production of the device, which should make it more accessible for those that have had a hard time finding it so far.

  • Although the Android app platform is easily the most popular app marketplace for unlocked Sony Ericsson Xperia X10 Android devices, a number of third party app marketplaces have sprung up over the course of the last few months that often include apps that are specially designed for certain carriers, manufacturers and specific devices. It’s easy to see why these app stores have increased in popularity; they allow users to immediately see what apps are available for their device and to quickly and easily sift through them to find the ones that they would like. Google recently announced that they would be making some changes to their app marketplace to make it easier to navigate and find apps. Even with the changes to the official Google Android Marketplace, they still have not made things as easy on users as some of the third party app marketplaces.

Appsfire features a main screen that features several different lines of apps. The sections that it shows you can be customized, and some of the categories include featured apps, apps whose prices have been slashed, hot apps for the day, top free apps and top free games.

The main screen constantly changes to show you what is available, hot and new. One problem with the app is that it just shows you the icon for each of the app, which can make it hard to tell which app you are looking at as the marketplace does not display the names of any of the apps until you have selected it.

The “Discover” tab allows you to quickly search through the apps in a list format, which most users should find to be easier to use than the home screen. The list format provides the name and a short description of the app.

Appsfire looks promising, and certainly makes the large collection of Android apps easier to sift through, but has not made the process as simple as it could be. As of right now the home screen seems to be a little bit cluttered, but will allow you to search through more apps in a shorter period of time.

  • Although spyware is mostly reserved for systems that run on a Windows platform, SecTheory, a security firm suggests that perhaps the newly acquired Hewlett Packard webOS platform could also be forced to deal with spyware concerns in the very near future.

The security firm claims that they have already been able to find a number of flaws in the operating system that could potentially leave it open for spyware harassment and a plethora of different exploits that could hinder the experience of the end user. One exploit that the firm detailed involved the data field in the contacts app which can be used to run different types of code. This issue was actually already addressed with the release of webOS 2.0, but there are still quite a few errors that were detailed by SecTheory that have yet to be fixed. These exploits include a denial of service error, cross-site scripting issues that could leave webOS devices vulnerable to attack and a floating-point overflow issue.

Hewlett Packard will likely move quickly to fix all of the issues that were pointed out by the security firm SecTheory, especially since the company just recently acquired Palm OS and is looking to integrate the technology into a umber of their own unlocked cell phone next year. Sectheory speculated that webOS has been exposed as an underdeveloped platform which will make the platform more enticing to hackers and coders who are looking to infect your smart device with malware and spyware in an effort to capture information.

Although no operating system is completely secure, the flaws that were exposed in the framework of webOS devices should be worrisome to individuals that were looking to purchase a device that runs on the platform. It is clear that HP has a great deal of work to do before consumers should feel completely safe while using the platform.

  • FCC looking to accept 911 texting
Posted on November 25, 2010 by Pure Mobile

With texting becoming increasingly popular across the globe among the unlocked cell phone users, the FCC is now taking a look at how viable 911 texts would be in situations of emergency. Of course, this could potentially pose a number of problems, but if the system were not abused it could help save lives. There are plenety of situations where someone may want to silently contact 911 in order to receive help without alerting individuals around them that they are doing so.

For instance, if someone were in your house it would make a lot of sense to hide and text 911 rather than to call and risk being heard. Or, if you were running from someone and didn't have time to stop and talk, you could send a text in order to keep moving.

As of right now, it is not clear if they will expand their 911 services to include text messages. Any widespread roll out of the feature would likely require quite a bit of testing to ensure that the system works correctly and is not abused. The FCC is also reportedly looking into receiving MMS with streaming video and pictures so that you can more accurately describe your location or give the operator an idea of what police or medical officials can expect as they arrive on the scene.

It will be interesting to see if they adopt this practice. It is a good idea, but may not be as practical as expected and might actually cause more confusion and problems than the current system does, which requires that you call for help. If successful,t he program could potentially save quite a few lives.
