  • Google has always done a very good job of getting their users to upgrade to new versions when upgrades are available. That, plus the fact that newer devices are running on updated versions of the Android software means that more than 60% of their users are running on Android 2.2 or higher such as unlocked Samsung Nexus S Google Black. In fact. A vast majority of their users are either running 2.3, or 2.3 which seems to be the most popular option for new smart devices that have come out in recent months.

Most devices are currently being upgraded to either 2.2 or 2.3, and with version 3.0, Gingerbread right around the corner you can exact many new devices to be released for that version of the operating system as well. Android 1.6 still has 4.8% of the user base, while Android 1.5 still has 3% of the total user base.

Google also announced in a recent press release that they are activating more than 300,000 new phones per day. A number of these devices will be making their way to the Canadian market here soon, and users can expect these devices to run on Android 2.2 or higher when the release time comes.

This just goes to show how adept Google has become and getting their users to upgrade to new versions when the upgrade is available for all of the new features offered. Comparatively,Apple updates have done well as well such as in unlocked iphone 4, but have not seen the same level of success that Google has seen. There are going to be many new devices coming out in the future that are highly anticipated, running on Google Android 2.2 or higher, so expect these numbers to continue to climb here in the future as well.

  • The Get Jar app store is one that has become increasingly popular in recent months. While the Opera mini application might have been one of the favorites of their unlocked cell phone users, that did not stop the app store from removing the app from their app store. The Opera app has been surprisingly popular with many of their users. However, while GetJar claims that there is no malicious reasoning behind their decision to get rid of the app from their app store, some have speculated if it was not a competition based move.

Shortly after the removal, the company decided that they were going to respond to these inquiries in a letter to their users. They apologized and said that they did not tak the decision to remove Opera Mini Browser lightly. They had more than 30 million downloads of the app in total over the course of the last few years when they decided to remove it.

They claimed that they decided that their decision to remove to app was because they needed to continue making money, and the number of downloads that he app was receiving was simply too much for them to handle. It is not often that you hear a tech company admits their shortcomings, but this appeared to be the situation today when GetJar removed Opera Mini from their app store.

They were very open with their reasoning behind the removal, and you can not really fault them for just doing what is best for their business in the long run. They have been able to be open with their processes and transparent so that users are not able to scream foul play. After all, it is not foul play when you admit the true reasoning behind your decision and it makes perfect sense.

  • N64 Emulator Arrives on Android
Posted on March 8, 2011 by Pure Mobile

Emulators technically exist in a grey area, legally, but they have been present on Android for quite some time. There are many different emulators that are currently available on the Android such Unlocked Samsung Captivate i897, HTC Desire, etc. , starting with the original Nintendo and going all the way up through the original Playstation. Absent from the Android market was an emulator that most had been waiting anxiously for - a Nintendo 64 emulator. That has finally been addressed by the same person who was behind the creation of previous emulators, going by the name yongzh.

The emulator will require that you have a fairly powerful device in order to run the app, but so far it looks as if everything works as you might expect. Technically, you are supposed to own the N64 cartridge when downloading the ROMs, but of course this is an issue that is overlooked.

The touchscreen only handsets will allow you to control all of the game exclusively from the touchscreen. It might be a little hard for you to control them as well as you could with a controller, but nonetheless this should open up a lot of different games for use on your Android devices. It is a bit surprising that an N64 emulator has not made its way to Android devices previous to this.

Right now, the emulator will only cost around $6, which seems to be a fair price. You might want to look around and see what games you can find prior to downloading the emulator. Also keep in mind that these emulators exist within a legal grey area. Eventually, this issue could be addressed, especially because the emulators are not being made available for free, and instead rquire that you pay for them. Bring back memories when the N64 ruled the land of games.

  • In this new cell phone age, smart device theft is something that has become all too common, and has really become quite a problem. Several apps have been released that attempt to solve the problem, but now the carriers themselves are getting in on it. Sprint has announced their total Equipment Protection Application, which shares a name with a very similar application in which it shares many features.

With the new application, you will be able to track the whereabouts of your phone with a web interface, making it easy to see who has your phone and where they are headed, regardless of whether or not the phone is turned on. The Apple’s unlocked iphone 4 will allow you to sound an alarm even if the phone is muted. You can also lock the phone and wipe all of your contacts (which can then be restored if you are able to get your device back.) So far, the application is only compatible with Android and BlackBerry devices, and is completely free with Sprint’s Total Equipment Protection Program. Right now the program costs only $7 per month. That amount might seem like quite a bit, but for the knowledge of knowing that your device is always going to be able to be tracked and your data will always be safe, you really could not ask for more.

Other features that have been rumored for similar applications are the ability to delete text messages and calling data as well, so that the thieves could not go through your text messages and retrieve information through them. Look for apps like this one to continue to grow in popularity and expand to other platforms in the future. Soon the days will be gone when people can steal your mobile device and activate it under their own plans. Applications like this one could effectively wipe out the underground black market of stolen cell phones that has run so rampant in recent years.

  • Samsung Google Nexus S Review
Posted on March 3, 2011 by Pure Mobile

The Unlocked Samsung Google Nexus S is a phone that has surprising slipped under the radar in recent months despite the fact that it has been connected to two of the biggest names in the mobile industry. All around the Samsung Google Nexus S is a great offering, both in terms of hardware as well as in usability and in design.

It features a 1 GHZ Hummingbird CPU and 512 MB of RAM - More than enough to run Gingerbread, the 2.3 version of Android that the device utilizes. It’s four inch screen has a 800 x 480 Super AMOLED display that delivers top notch visuals and also has a five megapixel camera on the back, rear facing side of the phone as well as a VGA front facing camera that will allow you to video chat.

The design is sleek. The phone looks great, is light weight and can easily be stored in the pocket. The sound quality of the Samsung Google Nexus S is much better than previous devices in the S line, and the sounds on the other end are crystal clear and easy to hear.

The camera looks great, feels great and is leaps and bounds above other similar devices. The Gingerbread software is part of the reason why the phone has been so well reviewed, and the features provided through the software update are top of the line.

It is a mystery as to why the Samsung Google Nexus S Unlocked has not received more attention since it was first confirmed and announced. Perhaps users have been turned off by the problems that the Nexus One faced when it was first released - but that certainly should not stop you if you are looking for an excellent phone that comes with Gingerbread and has the hardware to back up even the most taxing of applications.

  • Samsung Offers Hands On For Galaxy Tab
Posted on February 16, 2011 by Pure Mobile

The Unlocked Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 got a lot of attention at the World Mobile Congress, and hands on events were given to all of the major blogs within the space. The device is an amazing tablet, and may be the nicest on the market. The dimensions are ideal for tablet use, and the device itself looks great.

It comes with a 10.1 inch screen and a 1280 x 800 pixel resolution display. The rear facing camera is eight megapixel, making it more powerful than most camera phones on the market. It also has a 2 megapixel front facing camera that will allow you to video chat with loved ones and friends. It runs on a Tegra 2 processor, and will run on Android 3.0. Since Android 3.0 is still in its development stage, you can bet that things will be ironed out and the device will run even faster once the software version is finalized.

The refresh rate of the screens was great, and no lag was noticeable. Although Honeycomb is not released yet, it looks as though it will be a great operating system that should meet the demands of just about an tablet out there.

The 10 inch form factor screen is the perfect size for a tablet and makes it easy to transport from one location to another. the smooth design, perfect size and high powered specs have made the Samsung Galaxy Tab unlocked highly anticipated since it was first announced - and for a good reason - it is an excellent device that should compete with the iPad and other big tablet devices in the coming weeks and months. The eight megapixel camera surpasses expectations and the front facing camera seals the deal.

  • In this unlocked cell phone world, most take electricity for granted, until they go camping or the power goes out. Everyone has been placed in situations when they are stuck with a dead phone and have no way to charge it. Imagine never having to subject yourself to situations like that one again when you use the Umeox Apollo, which is a solar powered phone.

The device was announced at the Mobile World Congress. There have been a number of previously released solar powered devices that also run on Android in the past, but never has one of these phones been as outwardly impressive as the Umeox Apollo.

So far there is no information on whether or not it will even be released in the United States or anywhere in North America. The Chinese manufacturer has remained tight lipped about the phone. Some rumors have stated that the company is working on two different versions of the phone including one that will work in the US and support 850/1900 MHz bands (which would allow the phone to work with AT&T), and one version that would allow the phone to work in Europe and Asia.

The specs of the phone are a bit underpowered. It will feature a 3.2” 320x480 Display, with over a gigabyte of storage inside the phone as well as a microSD card slot.

The phone will also come with a three megapixel rear camera, which is a bit underpowered given the current market. The company did warn users not to kill the battery completely. Charging for daily usage would only need about 2.5 hours of sun light, if the phone is sitting in the sun and not being used. However, after completely dying, the phone would need about 17 hours to charge.

  • Firefox 4 Beta Released for Android
Posted on February 3, 2011 by Pure Mobile

Are you a fan of the Firefox browser on Android devices? If so, then you might be interested in giving test driving the fourth version of Firefox for Android machines such as HTC Desire unlocked, Samsung Captivate i897, etc. Keep in mind that Firefox may not be the most popular - or most stable browser for the devices, but it has managed to garner a huge following that swear by it.

Mozilla knows that the data networks bottlenecking and adding extra seconds onto loading time is a big deal for most consumers who have grown accustomed to instant gratification when searching the web. They have toned down on the heaviness of their previous Firefox releases with Firefox 4, and have made the newest release completely about an increase in speed. They claim that the newest build of the browser will allow you to surf the web over three times faster than it did before. This information was obtained using the Kraken Javascript Benchmark, which is actually built by Mozilla so the results might be a little skewed, but it is good to see that Mozilla is focusing mostly on speed in the same way that Chrome did when it first came out.

In the SunSpider test, which is a more popular platform that is not designed by Mozilla, Firefox 4 tends to be about twice as fast as the previous versions. Of course, you probably won’t notice the split second difference unless you are using Firefox 4 during heavily trafficked times of the day.

Mozilla has also passed a total of 100 add on for mobile devices, which exponentially increases the feature list of the browser. Bringing their famous add-ons to their mobile browser is something that has attracted many of their desktop users that missed the functionality that they were used to having on their desktops. Some of these add ons include Ad Block Plus and User Agent Switcher, both of which are already stable and are running without any major issues according to tests and user reports thus far.

  • T-Mobile has released information about the highly anticipated LG G-Slate, just days after information regarding the Unlocked Samsung Galaxy S Vibrant 4G announcement. The tablet was first shown just over a month ago at the Consumer Electronics Show, and will be available to consumers in the spring. The device will have some very interesting capabilities that should allow it to be one of the more popular devices on the market.

The LG G-Slate will include a high definition 8.9 inch display that is capable of multi-touch technology. It will also be able to record 3D and full HD video, which is not something that we have previously seen from a tablet. It appears that the entry level tablet era has come and gone and now manufacturers are competing to include as many features as possible in their most recent announcements. The inclusion of these features should make the LG G-Slate one of the most highly anticipated tablets on the market during this upcoming spring.

The device will also feature 720p HD video playback straight from the device as well as an HDMI output that will allow for 1080p HD content to be played on HD displays. As far as hardware goes, the G-Slate will feature a dual-core, NVIDIA Tegra 2 Processor that comes complete with 32GB of storage and will run on the Google Android 3.0, also known as Honeycomb, operating system. The tablet should start to gain momentum now that it has been announced, and could potentially take on some of the biggest names in the space, including the Motorola Xoom, when it is finally released.

The fact that the tablet will be able to play high definition content on 3D TV’s should draw in users that own these television sets. So far, no tablet even similar to the LG Unlocked (G-Slate) has been announced thus far. It will certainly be interesting to see how well the tablet is able to perform in the first hands on testing sessions once we get a little bit closer to its release.

  • As per one of the leading Unlocked Cell Phone Blog Site, Sprint has announced that they will be now allowing customers to roam abroad on 4G networks where they are available. The roaming so far is limited to Digicel, which is located in Jamaica, and Global Mobile, which is currently located in Taiwan. The devices will utilize the Sprint SmartView Connection Manager, which will allow the devices to detect when they are within reach of the networks. They will be able to connect to the roaming service utilizing a 24 hour day long pass for just $14.99. The announcement makes Sprint the first company to offer international 4G Roaming.

The partnership goes to show that Sprint is committed to advancing their 4G support where applicable. The manager will allow for users to also utilize their Sprint connection, or international 4G roaming connection to connect to their desktops as well.

“We are excited to be Sprint’s first 4G roaming partner in Asia and looking forward to extending this alliance to our partners around the world,” said Rosemary Ho, who is the CEO of Global Mobile.

The partnership is the first of its kind to involve 4G networks and will allow for users to internationally roam on 4G networks. The current Sprint 4G network is found in 71 different markets in the Untied States. These markets include some very large cities including Los Angeles, Chicago, Denver, Houston and New York City. Sprint has continually expanded their 4G coverage, and is expected to continue their rapid expansion rate well into 2011.

Although their international 4G roaming features are limited, you can take this announcement as the first of more to come that will hopefully expand their 4G coverage to other areas of the globe in the coming months. Digicel is currently offering 4G coverage in more than 32 different markets across the Caribbean, and Central America.
