  • Verizon Kills the Kin
Posted on July 28, 2010 by Pure Mobile

We had got some reports from our sources that the nation’s biggest cell phone carrier will be doing away with the Microsoft Kin and this fear was confirmed as the company has later confirmed that they will indeed be doing this and pretty soon. In a recent statement which was given by the company in this relation said that they will indeed no longer be selling the Kin in both ‘One’ and ‘Two’ variants in their own flagship stores. The customers who are already using this phone will however be not affected with the reversal. The company has announced that all kinds of customer care facilities will be available for this phone. One good thing with this pull back is that the company did not have many customers of this phone as it is.

Indeed both these phones are really not the top of the line social networking devices and we will really not be missing it that much. The Kin One was a rather oddly shaped machine and the other variant the Kin Two had a slider QWERTY key pad. The phones were okay but nothing really great. The cell phones themselves had a custom edition of the Windows mobile platform. So they seem to be more or less okay mobile phones but what did go wrong than within a few months this device has to be shelved? The major reason was the shortcomings of the Windows phone which does not allow the users to download new applications on the device. We found this to be really one of the major downsides of this phone. What followed was some gross mismanagement on the part of Microsoft and some miscommunication from Verizon meant that they did not enter into an agreement over the data plan and Verizon wanted to take up the smartphone spectrum instead.

  • As time goes our demands from mobile internet is increasing and we want to get the much dreamed about levels of 500 MHz for mobile broadband. However this is still a distant dream as it will take around 10 years to achieve this. However the short term gains that we are getting are pretty good either ways. FCC has set a target to reach the level of 300 MHz within the next three years and is working towards just that. Some time back in the previous month, FCC had expressed their intentions of grabbing the 90 MHz spectrum of the Big Leo and had caused many discussions about what would happen to the 35 MHz band which was there.

The most exciting thing about this is that all these large bandwidths that we are talking about are exclusively for mobile broadband internet. The news we mentioned above is old, however more recently FCC has shown their interests in working with MSS which is also known as Mobile Satellite  and get the 90 MHz service bands which have the 2 GHz bad and the L-band along with the Big Leo of course. What all this means in a nut shell is that the mobile broadband industry will be expanding at a higher rate now as every small addition assists in acting as a filler for the 500 MHz width that is set aside.

Other than this, we have also received news that Clearwire has been given an extension for its primary trading zones to be completed in Florida. As per the reports that we have got, Clearwater had been asked to exchange some of the 2.5 GHz licenses in the Boca Raton Areas of West Palm Beach and Fort Lauderdale in Miami. This was supposed to happen much before but did not due to the high amount of licenses needed in the areas above.

  • We did have major reports that the CyanogenMod 6 will be coming out on the Sprint Unlocked HTC  EVO 4G Phone. However we did not really have much of a time frame attached with the release but as per what we have seen recently, the CM 6 is ready and is running pretty well on the EVO 4G.  This is a welcome change from the Sense UI which in our opinion was getting somewhat cumbersome and posing a large number of problems for the users, Although the Sense UI has been a worth service provider for the user but the in built Android UI is far easier to use as compared to this one. This however is a departure from what is was before.

We believe that the CyanogenMod 6 will grant the EVO owners a great feel for the Android 2.2  phone or the Froyo and allow them to escape the HTC custom skin on the Sense UI.  In fact the faster the new ROM is launched on the EVO, the faster it can get the update for the Froyo which it could not have done otherwise. The release date for the update was around Christmas. In a statement given by the company, they have said that they would prefer picking the early release of the Froyo on their phone almost half a year ahead of time, to sticking with the Sense UI. Furthermore what has pushed this decision of theirs is the fact that CM 6 other than getting Froyo out early on the HTC EVO 4G also has great amounts of features like the facility which allows you to pair it with a mouse via Bluetooth. What you can do is you can then connect the video output through a HDMI port and you have a proverbial computer on your hands. This is amazing in our opinion. According to us, it is not long till we see this update and more in the market.

  • It might not be a pretty smooth move but Windows have decided to use their own shortcomings to take a dig at their competitors Apple. With the release of the Windows Phone 7, the company decided to take a few pot shots at their primary market competitor Apple, for the problems they were facing with the unlocked iPhone 4 and its reception. In a recent event, the chief operating officer of Microsoft, Kevin Turner, remarked that the Apple iPhone can become their Vista and that Microsoft was happy about it. Furthermore, he also said that with the Windows Mobile 7, the customer would not have to hold it a certain way to use it.

These remarks are not very different from what is going on around the market but according to the market trends, the sales of the iPhone 3GS Unlocked Handset are not really down. The device has already sold over 1.7 million sets all over the world and there is no sign of the sales slowing down. Even as a lot of the techs review and such companies are chucking their recommendations for the iPhone 4 unlocked gadget, the iPhone is selling like hotcakes around the world. These comments though were made at a Microsoft event which focused largely on their new Windows 7 phone which we think is a hit in waiting for the software giant. Personally we feel that Microsoft should concentrate on what they are doing with their phone rather than attacking Apple.

The interface on this phone looks nice and goes a long way from the previous designs and the layout of the icons are very easy to use and does a lot for the users. Navigation is also quite user friendly. The only thing we can do for now is to just wait for it to release in the market.

  • Femtocell developers, Ubiquisys, have managed to round up a whopping $9 million through extra funding. This was primarily led by 5 Continents Consulting Group (5CCG) and needless to say this event has been quite outstanding. Other prominent companies were involved in this grand event, which has led to Ubiquisys bagging this enormous amount of money. This money is going to spend wisely in developing new innovations in femtocell technology. This can eventually lead to femtocell being deployed in different significant places where it can be put to productive use.

Ubiquisys has been proving their quality for a long time and was the first company to break the $100 price for femtocells. The possibilities of using femtocells have become unbelievable and thus Ubiquisys can indeed be of immense benefit to everyone.

Ubiquisys has interesting projects coming up to get the maximum out of the femtocells. The prospects look bright and they are sure to bring about several new changes if the $9 million is spent wisely. They have always delivered quality whenever they were tested and they are slowly becoming bigger and better. Femtocell technology has really taken off since the work done by Ubiquisys. They deserved this and they will surely put the money to good use in proper time.

5CCG’s Founder and Managing Partner, Michael Bornhäusser has been quite vocal in the support of Ubiquisys and is highly optimistic about the future of Ubiquisys. He believes Ubiquisys has become a worldwide phenomenon and have started to deliver a lot lately. Femto market has really been in the rise and Ubiquisys has been instrumental in providing such a situation. It has superior technology and is possibly on the verge of making history. The money will be of great value if it can be used to better the femtocell technology.

  • Avatron Software has come up with this new cool app which is called Air Sharing which allows you to basically extend the monitor of your Mac machine or even to transfer files in several formats from other devices like the unlocked iPhone 4 and similar iDevices. If you want to extend the viding space on the monitor of your MAC device, then you just have to simply place the iPad next to the screen and the set up is ready.

File transfer can be done between an iPad and iPhone touch as the app is compatible on both the devices. There are no wires involved and transfers can take place irrespective of the file formats. The files can be transferred and can be printed or viewed as we said on your Macintosh or Linux based computers. What is most astounding is that we do not have to install any kind of additional software when we want to use this feature on the computer.

The basic functionality of this app is primarily executed by way of Wi-Fi technology and other than that there is another version which is called the Pro which has elements of 3G. Other than this basic data transfer facility, we get a number of other functions which are really useful in this regard.  PDF reading is markedly improved in this one and you can read encrypted PDF files. Furthermore you can also edit to a certain extent like cut, copy and paste files from one folder to the other. Other than this, there is also the very important function of emailing the files which are stored on your device directly. There are also features like Zipping and unzipping the folders.

This app will soon be getting more updates too as it will be looking to get enhanced 3G connectivity.

  • It might sound a little outlandish, but American Eagle is giving out free smartphones if you try on some of their jeans. This is true as they have just launched an offer where you can try on their garments and you will be eligible to fill in a form and can choose from a huge selection of smartphones which you can have for free providing you sign a two year long contract with the carrier. This will help you save a minimum of $100 in the least and it is definitely a good offer if you had been looking to buy a new smartphone as it is.

The phones that they are offering are the HTC Aria, LG Ally and even Blackberry phones of the nature of the  Blackberry  Unlocked Curve 8520 and the Bold. Other than these, there are also the Motorola Cliq XT, Backflip and the Devour. Therefore, we are really excited with this rather nice deal the company is giving. Although we still think that a pair of Levis is unbeatable. So what you have to do is that you try on the jeans and you will get the details that you will need to go online. Register and select the phone that you want and the carrier, yes they allow you to pick your carrier and all that is left for you to do is to wait for FedEx delivery to get it to your home.

Fred Grover, executive vice president of marketing in American Eagle, has mentioned how they want to ensure that their customers are satisfied and go back home with not only a good pair of jeans but also a new smartphone. Other than this, the company has also said that they hope that this will show how confident they are in their line of garments and it will surely bring in more valued customers to their side.

  • No Silent Mode on Android!!
Posted on July 13, 2010 by Pure Mobile

The Flash technology has recently been integrated in Android devices. But it has been discovered that that the Flash 10.1 player on Android will play the sound, regardless of what mode the phone is on!

Watching a Flash-enabled video on the Android device will have the sound playing even if you put it on silent mode. It is always advisable to use your headphones or earphones if you are with people. Otherwise, you will wake everybody up, and face the consequences. It is quite a problem for Adobe, to have blatantly overlooked this small fact. But then again, the Flash player 10.1 for Google’s Unlocked Nexus one Android is still a Beta version, and so, Adobe can be forgiven for this tiny mistake.

A much hassled user said that most of us are dependant upon on silent mode on all our devices to help the babies to stay asleep. He complains about obvious problems regarding the lack of silent mode which has caused severe disturbance in a number of ways.

Although this e-mail does not quite resemble a proper complaint, it can be assumed that the guys at Adobe are listening at this point. The silent issue will be fixed in a jiffy, hopefully. It could be done so in the form of a patch which is pretty easy to install, or be taken care of in a beta version of the player.

Adobe has to work really hard to establish the fact that Flash on unlocked cell  phones is the way to go now, and in order to do this, Adobe must not overlook these mistakes in the future. Adobe is the leading company when it comes to developing newer technologies for the internet. Its flash technology is one of the best to have ever hit the mobile industry and so it is vital they take whatever precautions are necessary.

  • An analyst has come to the conclusion that T-Mobile’s Garminfone has not been doing well at all due to its low sales. This could be because the people don’t want to have to do anything with a device which is a more or less limited GPS-oriented handset, even though the device runs Android.

The Garminfone is average, with a capacitive 3.5-inch touch screen, a camera of 3 megapixels, 3G, Wi-Fi and a microSD slot. Though these features are not enough to win over customers, and it does not help at all, when you come to know that the Garminfone has no flash with its camera. The only thing Garmin was banking heavily on, was its turn-by-turn navigation and maps, which could have made the appeal to people to ditch their personal navigation devices.

Morgan Keegan analyst Yair Reiner, surveyed close to 50 stores of T-Mobile, and the figures he came across were not in the least satisfactory. It is true that there have been no official announcements regarding Garmin sales, but Reiner’s conclusions can be deemed like a brick. Many sales associates spoke highly of it and claimed that it had the best navigation functionality of any cell phone even before it was released. But days after the release, it has not generated interest from the stores, which hampered sales and others had not sold any despite displays being setup and several sold a few. The sales have been extremely low.

There are many causes attributed to the woefully low sales of the Garminfone; as the Android 2.2, with a free turn-by-turn navigation with the Google Navigation systems, has a major role to play in this. The best way for Garmin to perk up sales is to come up with some killer hardware designs. There are many devices which provide GPS services, the same as the Garmin, and the Garmin needs to come up with something that will give it an edge over the others.

  • Cope of the Michigan state are now all set to be putting into action the state's ban on text messaging while driving from 1st July onwards since it is becoming a big threat to live on the streets. This action has already been undertaken by 14 other states in the United States of America, as well as in various countries over the world. In Canada for instance, the whole phenomenon of sending text messages from your  unlocked cellphone while behind the wheel is being eliminated in gradual stages by the implementation of stringent fines and reprimands.

However as straightforward the law may seem, it will be really difficult to implement properly. The moot point is that how is one supposed to understand whether you're text messaging or just looking at the number of missed calls you got in the last half an hour? Michigan Police Executive Director Tom Hendrickson said that it would be difficult for law enforcers to understand whether a person is text messaging while driving and he does have a valid point.

Matt Bolger, 1st Lt. of the State Police, who trains cops on new laws, says that people who are using their cell-phone for calling have nothing to fret about. There would be a fine of around $ 100 for the first time and then a fine of $200 the next time you are caught.

By enforcing this law Michigan moved into the bandwagon, which already includes other US states such as California, New Jersey and also Washington D.C.

One good thing about the law is its transparency. Chances are that wherever you might be caught, you would have to pay a fine. So Michigan has decided to go ahead and ban text messaging while driving from unlocked phone. Indeed, one can make a call instead (as there's no ban on talking on a Bluetooth device)!
