Nokia's latest product roadmap suggests that they are definitely on top of things! The Finnish company recently released their flagship Windows 7 smartphone, the Lumia 800 as part of the growing Nokia cell phone product line.  As good business practices dictate, they haven’t taken months to get a software update out to its customers to add “new sparkle dust” with some post-distribution improvements.

In the next two weeks the update will be rolled out ushering innovative performance enhancing changes.  While, not the most glamorous of enhancements,  Nokia will dramatically improve battery charging time - something so important when your phone starts to sputter out of juice.  A great “just in case” option for high consumption users is to leverage premium electronic accessories, such as, batteries, memory cards, data cables, stylus & pens to enhance their devices.

Additional business oriented improvements were made to voicemail notifications and the email reply function for Microsoft Exchange 2003 - an business(imperative when working on the go.  Visually, Nokia has ameliorated the Lumia 800’s display allwing for improved viewing in bright lighting.  Your audio experience will also be positively tweaked with this update that brings higher quality sound through your headphones earpieces.

For the eager Nokia customers who have already purchased the Lumia 800, look for this software update to be made available through Microsoft Zune. Be aware that it is slated as a phased rolled out, to minimize stress on the system from simultaneous downloads. And for those expecting to see a new Nokia under the tree, another update with more improvements and fixes will be in sometime within the first part of 2012.  In the interim, additional memory or mini SD cards as well as cases and skins and other accessories can supplement your storage needs and enable you to  customize your Lumia 800 addition.

Most travelers would expect a European capital to have a bustling international airport.  However, most first-time visitors to Finland would be in for a surprise.  This Nordic beauty has a mere population of 5 million... hence, its Helsinki airport resembles a small regional airport . Nokia was an industry leader when there wasn’t a truly global mobile device market and an accompanying level of global competition.  Joining forces with Microsoft in February was a move intended to preserve its status in the mobile device industry.  It currently seems to have inherently altered the flavor of the company and, in due course, its product and image.  Even when taking the newest products out of consideration, this pairing appears to have alienated Nokia’s customer base.  This perception could potentially be altered with an addition of tablets.

Efforts to appease those customers  have a hollow resonance when compared to the Nokia of old. Even worse, with Stephen Elop’s statements regarding the Lumia800 being “the first real Windows Phone device,” the management of the co-branding is likely to alienate other Windows OS smart phone manufacturers like HTC, LG Mobile and Samsung.    A conflict in culture, vision, and management are looking to be greater conflicts than the mediocre mobile devices launched by the Microsoft-Nokia conglomerate. Black Friday and Cyber Monday are typically two of the biggest shopping days of the year, and as consumers continue to use mobile devices more frequently to make online purchases, 2011 is shaping up to be huge for online shopping. A new study from ad network InMobi found that an estimated 60 million people will use a mobile device for online bargain-hunting this coming Black Friday and Cyber Monday, and 21 million of them will make purchases on their devices and associated mobile accessories.

A new survey found that Black Friday bargain hunters will be on the lookout for tablets more so than any other mobile device next Friday. Among those polled, 32% said they would be hunting for a Black Friday deal on a tablet and tablet accessories this holiday season. 25% of respondents said they would scout for deals on HDTVs, 24% said they would be looking for deals on laptops and laptop accessories with the remaining 19% plan to hunt for deals on smartphones and cell phone accessories this Black Friday.

When asked about the one gadget respondents would most like to receive as a gift this holiday season, tablets and tablet accessories dominated yet again. Apple’s iPad and Amazon’s Kindle Fire were tied atop the list, each having been named by 10% of those surveyed. Smartphones and related cell phone accessories filled the No.2 spot with 9%, HDTVs were mentioned by 8% of respondents and laptops and digital cameras were tied with 6%. Only 4% of those polled said that an Amazon Kindle eReader was their ideal gift.

It is amazing to believe that with just two different models of their smartphone available, Apple was able to take over two thirds of the profits from smartphone sales in the second quarter among the top companies around the world. The news was released by Strategy Analytics just after the company announced that they believed at all with the smart phone vendor in the lead in terms of volume around the world. It is clear that Apple’s unlocked iphone 4 is the number one Smart phone company around the world, but a number of other countries are following closely behind.

Four of the eight major vendors of smart devices around the world were profitable during the second quarter of this year. Apple’s other profit share jumped from 50% during the second half of last year to a total of 57% in the first quarter of 2011, oh the way to 66.3% during the second quarter of this year. To say the least, it will be interesting to see if they are able to continue this upward trend and profit.

Apple’s iphone 4 unlocked receiving two thirds of the profit share for the quarter is something that you definitely probably saw coming, but not at the margin in which we saw. The company continues to grow their revenue, profits and has a huge amount of money sitting around waiting to be spent; you can bet that the company will continue to find ways to increase their overall profit. Other companies in their proper share from the previous quarter include Samsung at 15% and HTC at 11% up nearly 6% from the previous quarter. With these three companies being on top of things in almost every major editorial, you can bet that we could see some heavily aggressive behavior from them in the future. Apple appears to be in a spot where they could pull away and given their current state, in large amount of capital that they have on hand.

Peek has gone as far as to say that their own Internet only mobile devices are actually collectors items, and are not common everyday tools. The Indian smart phones including the MicroMax Q80 EZPad are being touted as some of the best gifts in the Indian region. The devices have smart phones similar features that run through cloud-based software. The site has also claimed that the hardware will run on any device through the cloud, and will allow for e-mail, instant messaging, video chat as well as social networking and Web browsing. These are all features that are commonly associated with smart devices.

Although they might be overrating the device on the whole, the fact that it does come with all of these features is nice for those that choose to use them. Most would not consider the Peek devices to be any sort of collector’s item, but they are definitely going to be an item that people will want throughout India. The features that they have are reminiscent of a smart device, but the fact that they are not a phone means that you will not have to pay the same types of charges for the device.

It will be interesting to see how users in the India area respond to the release of these devices. The service will be able to run on any piece of hardware, which means that you will be able to utilize it with your computer in the same way that you would be able to utilize it with your smart phone. It will also be able to utilize the features without having to connect a smart phone, which is highly popular among users and could potentially lead to more development of the technology. They are not the first company to release this type  of technology, but they have definitely made it a mainstay within their business.

There has been a lot of talk as of late about Nokia potentially being acquired by Microsoft. The rumors have stated that because of a recent deal between Nokia and Microsoft that will bring several devices to Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform such as unlocked Dell venue pro, LG C900, etc.. that we can soon here expect to see the companies perhaps merging, which would fall in line with what Microsoft is trying to do. A number of moves that Nokia has made in recent months seemed to support that fact, but taking a closer look we can now see that it doesn’t exactly look like the rumors are true, although you can never really trust what a CEO says in regards to huge rumors such as this one because would they really want to tell you the truth anyway?

The CEO of Nokia, Stephen Elop said on Wednesday that the reports that the company had agreed to sell the cell phone part of their business to Microsoft for $19 billion is not true. There were a number of well known media outlets that reported the rumor, which has been vehemently denied by the company. The news first came from industry insider Eldar Murtazin, who seems to be behind all of the biggest rumors - some of which have turned out to be true.

“There’s no basis for them,” said the CEO Elop when he was asked about the rumors. It was clear that he was looking to clear the air. While he claims that the rumors are not true that may just simply mean that a deal has not been done at this time. It will definitely be interesting to see if anything about this comes out in the near future, but as of right now it looks like there is no real deal in the works. He went on to say that Nokia has never even discussed a potential acquisition and said that he does not understand where the rumors were coming from.

Skype has been down for a number of cell phone users such as unlocked iphone 4, Nokia N8, etc..  who tried to connect to the service today. The company said that they had identified the problem and were looking to give users instructions on how to fix the issue for those that were having problems connecting to the service early this morning. The company quickly released some very simple instructions on how users can fix the issue depending on the operating system that they are using.

To start, users should close the program both on the main desktop as well as on the system tray to be sure that nothing is running. Then, they should go into the control folders and select the view tab to ensure that all of the entries are available. Make sure that you turn off the option to allow for hidden folders. In this folder there should be a shared .xml file. Once you have located that, you type %appdata%skype into the run option and then click ok. You will then delete the shared.xml file and will restart Skype, which should correct the issues.

Skype was able to very quickly fix the issue and release a workaround that was very easy to follow that most users should be able to follow fairly easily. They will also probably be releasing an update at some point in the near future that does it all for you for those of us that are not as inclined with computer. They were able to quickly address the issues and give users a fix to the problem. Skype’s customer service is some of the best that is out there at this current time and they responded to the issues in just a few short minutes which is something that you have to admire when it comes to larger companies that often take quite some time to address issues that are seen by a minority such as this issue.

The Unlocked Nokia N9 was a device that most thought was never going to be released, but it looks as though there might still be a chance for the device that most thought was scrapped at the time. The FCC filing for the device made its way online today. The device was found in the government database, in which it was claimed that there were six cell frequencies along with Bluetooth and a 2.4 GHz 802.11 b/g/n WiFi.

This shows that the device would be able to debut on a number of different carriers, so narrowing that down is going to be tough until more details are released. The device will also feature a QWERTY sliding keyboard that suggests based on the layout that the device will be available in the US or Canada.

Some have suggested based on the specs that the device might be a great device to run on the Windows Phone 7 platform, although no information regarding that can be released.  The device is a promising one, but not a lot has been released about it, until this FCC file made its way online.

A number of different phones have become known to the public in this way, and you can bet that it will be not be the last time either. Although nothing is concrete at this point, the fact that the paperwork has been filed to the FCC shows that there is a fairly great chance that the device could see the light of day some time in the near future.

The unlocked  Nokia N9 was a phone that a lot of people were excited about when the first details were released, but it quickly died down when it looked like the phone was never going to see the light of day. Now that things have changed, perhaps there will be a buzz for the device again.

You may have recently heard that San Francisco was looking into the amount of radiation that is put out by cell phones. Behind a very high powered CTIA lobbying effort, the city was looking to enforce laws that rquire cell phone retailing companies to label the radiation SAR levels that were found by the FCC for each of the devices. These plans have been put on hold for the time being, but the city has said that they are still looking into how they can put together a watered down version of the bill to do the same thing.

What the city didn’t state was that the SAR levels that were measured by the FCC are not actually a good way to measure the amount of radiation for each cell phone because the number is found using a variety of tests. These tests do not include the amount of radiation that the end user would be exposed to through using the devices. This means that you could look to purchase a low SAR rated phone, but that does not necessarily mean that the end user will experience less radiation absorption than they would from phones with higher SAR levels.

The changes to the law have not been announced at this time, but you can bet that it will ore than likely require retailers to put the information somewhere in the store, instead of having to label each of the phones - which would require a great deal more time for each of the individual retailers. This is a good move in the eyes of most, because the SAR readings are not the best way to determine whether or not the end user is being exposed to more or less radiation in the end. This is another good example of the government clashing with big business and not truly understanding what they are actually asking of these companies.
