End of 2011 brings a mixed bag of news – Stealthware to Empowered Canadian ConsumersBefore October, the casual smart phone consumer was likely blissfully unaware of the existence of a company by the name of Carrier IQ. Thanks to researcher Trevor Eckhart, it has come to light that the stealth software company is recording keystrokes, SMS messages and other information and possibly reporting the data back to their servers. Carrier IQ’s response? Issuing a cease and desist letter to the whistleblower, Eckhart, and releasing a media alert dismissing the accusations saying that they are “not recording keystrokes or providing tracking tools.” Enjoy the freedom brought about by unlocked phones... which allow you to choose not only the service provider but the plan that best meets your lifestyle needs.
The potential privacy contagion is rumored to be limited to certain smart phone OS’s, so be an informed consumer and review all your mobile device options. The best part is the great offerings and releases of new phones and from Apple, Blackberry, Samsung, Motorola, HTC and everything in between during the holiday season! This Holiday Season - protective accessories solutions make excellent and greatly appreciated stocking stuffers.

End of 2011 brings a mixed bag of news – Stealthware to Empowered Canadian Consumers
And to end on a high note, legislation may be in the works to bring greater data equality and accessibility to all Canadians. Christian Paradis, the Minister of Industry, recently made significant remarks at the International Institute of Communications Canada Conference in Ottawa that rolled out “an update on measure taken to support the digital economy in Canada […] Canadians should receive the same services wherever they live.” The implications of this could be huge, ending regional monopolies by carrier based on tower service areas. Putting the power of choice back into the hands of the consumer who could better take advantage of unlocked mobile devices creates a competitive environment to drive technology and affordable, customizable plans. Music to all Canadians’ ears!

As mobile devices become increasingly integrated into our lives as an extension of the personal computer; the same threats posed to our PCs creep into our day to day mobile phone and tablet usage.

Android OS – Application soft spots lead to potential privacy breaches

According to a research paper released by the North Carolina State University, certain Android vendors including Motorola, Samsung, and HTC) are not following Android’s best practices for pre-installed apps.  An undesired side effect of this negligence is that those applications access to send SMS messages, wipe a phone’s data, or even read your address books. In effect, they are able to do all of the aforementioned tasks without your knowing. This is stark contrast to Apple iPhone and iPad tablet propietary applications / OS practices which may be on your list of considerations.

As a Google prodigy, these Android vulnerabilities are not quite so present on Google phones such as the Nexus One and Nexus S. There are unfortunately some symptoms of an underlying weakness in the Android platform. This shortcoming points to an inherent flaw in the OS for its permissions-based exploits. Luckily today’s marketplace offers a variety of smart phone OS and device options.  Discover the innovative protective solutions and premium electronic accessories from the industry's most leading brands.

Android OS – Application soft spots lead to potential privacy breaches

Google and Motorola (now a subsidiary of the internet giant) have both acknowledged these issues. Interesting enough, HTC and Samsung have presented considerate difficulties for researchers in terms of reporting these issues. An interesting delineation between manufacturers, it may be in a consumer’s best interest to review unlocked phones for security purposes before locking into a contract with an unsecure smart phone.

The silver lining is that it is the likelihood of these soft spots being exploited is low. This is due to the necessity of side-loading an app on the device to interface with the permissions of the pre-installed applications’ weaknesses. But buyer bewares – the potential for serious privacy infringement is there. Be an informed and engaged consumer and take precautions when downloading applications from the Android Marketplace.  Ensure that you are downloading apps from trustworthy sellers and take a few moments to read over reviews, protection, smart phone and tablet accessories and additional smart phone options at online retailers such as puremobile.com.

Big Brother strikes again through Google’s Android OSIs it any surprise that our tweeting, emailing, texting, and everything in between is leaving a trail of evidence behind us?  After all, we live in a world where key logging technology can be purchased from almost anywhere.  PureMobile offers unlocked phone, tablets and along with a myriad category of accessories to protect your mobile devices.

Not so long ago Apple was found to be keeping tabs on its iPhone users’ whereabouts. Now the Android developer Trevor Eckart has come forward with this discovery: his HTC EVO 4G is tracking each keypress, message, and location - this begs for consumer education and choice as these privacy threats grow. Review unlocked phones to avoid potentially harmful limitations in choice.

This stealth software belongs to the company Carrier IQ. It records on millions of other droids - not just HTC users, but Nokia, Samsung and BlackBerry as well.

Big Brother strikes again through Google’s Android OS

Carrier IQ's position is that it doesn’t affect privacy concerns because; “Our technology is not real time. It's not constantly reporting back. It's gathering information up and is usually transmitted in small doses.

They also dispute Eckart’s claim that his key presses were monitored, but with the use of a packet sniffer he was able to track each packet traveling to and from his stock EVO 4G.  He was then able to show how each keypress on the numeric keyboard, his browsing data, and his SMS messages were tapped without his knowledge by Carrier IQ software.   Get the latest in top quality, innovative protective solutions and premium electronic accessories from the industry's leading brands

The truth may come out in the wash with a legal battle, but in the interim Android users may want to consider alternative mobile devices to keep Big Brother at bay.

  • HTC – The Quietly Brilliant Story

In an era where patents are sold and bought  like commodities in lieu of protecting intellectual rights;  and where mall innovators are snapped up for their technological visions and execution, - HTC is a wonder to behold.  The rising star of the smartphone world has « arrived. »

Ten years ago HTC couldn’t even be considered a boutique cell phone to set yourself apart from the mundane crowd of Motorolas and Nokias. It was, however, a company earning its chops manufacturing hardware for Windows Mobile-powered devices for household names like Compaq and XDA.  Now HTC is manufacturing the Raider, Amaze and Desire line of cell phones coupled with a plethora a innovative protective solutions and premium electronic accessories

HTC's big break came in 2008 : with the Android. The Dream and G1, which launched the brand into the periphery of the ever growing smart phone consumer market.  Its years as a technological innovator for Windows helped carve a niche and secure a market notoriety for cell phone and mobile accessories.

The following video provides an excellent account of The Quietly Brilliant Story of HTC

Throughout the years there has been escalating competition in particular from Samsung cell phones.   But as any good capitalist knows, a competitive environment spurs creativity and innovation. And, as any informed consumer knows, also keeps costs competitive thanks to vendor agnostic retailers such as puremobile.com where the buffet of unlocked cell phone and mobile devices can be sampled, reviewed, and easily paired with practical yet fun wireless accessories.

HTC is an underdog with elegant and smart technology that marries performance and beauty into something intuitive and tangible for a memorable end user experience. Translation? HTC is a rising star .  They may have lost the dominant Android market share to Samsung but the recent performance and successes of Sensation and EVO 3D will pair with upcoming jewels like the Ville and sharp music accessory bundles (without the proprietary encumbrance of Apple’s iTunes) for a bright 2012.

Accessories make great stocking stuffers for the tech savvy Android aficionado in your life, take a gander at some great holiday accessory deals at puremobile.com!

AT&T and T-Mobile have been denied their merger based on anti-trust laws. Steve Jobs is no longer a guiding creative force at Apple. The Euro has denigrated from one of the highest valued currencies to one of the most closely watched.  What is the common theme - Uncertainty in 2012 is rising!  Yet according to a report from ABI after market wireless accessories sales are expected to increase slightly more $50 billion volume.  With the following accessory category breakdown:

    Bluetooth Headsets at $920 Million

    Chargers at $766 Million

    Memory Cards $529 Million

Protective Cases and Skins at $520 Million

Headphones and Earpieces at $308 Million

HTC Poised to be More Competitive in 2012

In the same breath, HTC is poised to change their current market situation and be more competitive in 2012 with the release of new cell phones, tablets and other mobile devices along with matching wireless accessories.   The company’s CFO, Winston Yung said “We will focus on the product next year, better and more competitive. Other than new LTE phones for the U.S. market, we have phones for the global market. We will launch some worldwide flagship products. We’re confident in them”.

At the moment, however, HTC will have to contend with the recent sharp (30% - ouch!) decline of its stocks prices (which coincidentally coincides with the cut growth expectations for the final quarter of the fiscal year and a 45 million HTC Cell Phone unit cancellation).

While struggling to keep pace with cellular barons like Apple and Samsung, the prodigy fledgling will find its wings with Beats Audio (an acquisition made earlier this 2011), the Amaze and Raider.

HTC Poised to be More Competitive in 2012

With the loss of a lost patent infringement case that had been filed against Apple - and lost a justification to become embroiled in litigation in regards to S3 graphics threatens to tarnish the HTC glow.  Yet, clever marketing, smart acquisitions, and a plethora of mobile device accessories in addition to noteworthy camera quality and network speed should all help right the HTC ship.

Keep your eyes peeled for the new HTC Ville and HTC Zeta for the next round of Android 4.0 devices and take advantage of some truly great mobile devices and music and give them a whirl yourself. Enhance your mobility! Turn your device into a power tool.  Discover our select accessories specifically designed to make your devices functionally efficient and performance rich.

It's the most explosive development in the tablet market since the release of the original iPad and the latest apple tablet the iPad2. The launch of the Amazon Kindle Fire represents a major shot across the bow at Apple, according to a new ChangeWave survey which primarily targeted North American consumers.

Tablet Demand - Plan to buy next 90 daysAccording to ChangeWave demand for tablets this holiday season is three (3) times higher than for the same period last year.

It seems that today, shoppers have broadened their tablet interest from to include the Kindle Fire from Amazon... you can view more in this consumer demand survey

The more interesting stat, perhaps, is that more than a quarter of respondents in ChangeWave’s survey who confirmed an imminent Kindle Fire purchase said they would buy the Amazon tablet in place of an iPad.

“Tablet providers (Iconia, Xoom, Flyer, Galaxy Tab, PlayBook, etc) have failed to gain appreciable traction against iPad’s 67% market share, and iPad 2 should be a popular holiday purchase,” indicated officials at ChangeWave. “However, strong early Fire uptake seems likely, raising speculation Apple now faces a real tablet contender. Survey data says 26% of likely Fire buyers (i.e. of the 5%) say they will delay/put on hold iPad buying. Sustained Fire uptake and ‘buzz’ will depend on consumer/reviewer reactions to Fire’s user experience.”

Tablet Planned PurchasingMoreover, when asked if they intended to purchase a tablet in the next 90 days, 14% of the 3,043 North American consumers surveyed by ChangeWave said yes. Only 6% said they intended to purchase a tablet in a similar survey conducted in August, and just 4% intended to purchase a tablet in November last year. ChangeWave’s new survey also found that 65% of respondents intended to purchase Apple’s iPad 2, while 22% were eying the Kindle Fire. Only 4% of respondents intended to purchase a Samsung Galaxy Tab, and no other tablet vendor garnered more than 1% of interest among those polled.  We expect consumers that want protect and personalize their devices to  invest in most fashionable and trendy tablet accessories with the latest technology to enhance functionality

“The launch of the Amazon Kindle Fire is turning out be a real competitive threat to Apple, who until now has almost completely dominated the tablet space,” ChangeWave said. “But the most immediate impact of the Amazon device is on the rest of the competition, where the survey shows it wreaking a devastating blow to a range of second tier tablet manufacturers, including Motorola, RIM, Dell, HTC, H-P and Toshiba.”

Amazon’s tablet may end up helping Apple in the long run. “The ChangeWave survey shows the Amazon Kindle Fire is going to leapfrog the competition and become the number two product in the tablet market, as long as it can provide a quality user experience,” ChangeWave said.

  • Many of the cell phone carriers are secretly planning for the lineup of cell phones they plan to launch over the holiday season. Somehow the T-mobile lineup has been leaked and we are now privy to all of their plans for the next few months. For the month of October they plan to launch a total of four new phones and in November they plan to double that by introducing eight additional new phones by November 2.

For a quick rundown of the timeline, the following is the information that we were able to receive from reports online. On October 19, T-mobile will be releasing three phones from three separate manufacturers, an HTC such as unlocked HTC Raider, a Samsung, and a Huawei. From there, we are set to see another release by Samsung on approximately October 26.T-Mobile Holiday Roadmap Leaked With Dates

On November 2, T-mobile is set to release 6 phones all at once. We are not 100% sure what the exact models will be but it's fair to say they will conclude the lineup for the remainder of the holidays. There will also be to additional releases in November but it is speculated that one will be a tablet and the other a low-end phone.

It is important to note that the documents leaked are somewhat old. Given that things change often in this industry, you can expect some slight variation from the noted schedule and the types of phones to be released. So don't take this information as fact but merely speculation and to provide a general outline of the mobiles plans over the next couple of months. If you're in the market for new cell phone such as unlocked Samsung Galaxy Ace and maybe an idea to keep note of this information and use it during your buying process. For all you know it can help you get a few extra bucks off with a competitor when you can mention what's planned by T-mobile.
