  • Although initially it might have sounded like somewhat of a long shot, the judicial institutions in the country have taken up the accusations leveled against Apple’s Unlocked  Iphone 4 and AT&T rather seriously and have given the lawsuit a class action status. Judge James Ware of the U.S. District court for the Northern District of California was the one who gave this judgment which could mean more trouble for both the companies concerned. This all started when the consumers in the USA raised their doubts over a probable conspiracy involving AT&T and Apple when the latter decided to tie up exclusively with the carrier.

Initially this law suit was filed in the year 2007 with a view to protect the interests of the customers when a section of the buyers felt that Apple and AT&T were trying to work unfairly to exert some kind of a monopoly over the release of the iPhone. The consumers who had filed this law suit had objected to how they would have to buy the iPhone and use it with AT&T. More interestingly it was said that the companies were lying to the customers about the two year contract when in truth you would not be able to transfer to another carrier even after the two year contract was to expire.

Although the lawsuit might have wanted to mean well, but in all truth, it is very presumptuous to level such allegations on such companies, it is in fact at a level ridiculous. There are several such phones like the HTC Unlocked Droid ( Eris ) which you cannot use on any other carrier even if your contract with Verizon wireless expires. Although this story might just fade out, we do believe that we have not heard the last of the class action law suit. In our opinion there is still much left to be seen and heard.

  • Desire takes on the iPhone 4
Posted on July 14, 2010 by Pure Mobile

Android fans on T-Mobile, UK, can get their beloved Unlocked HTC ( Desire ) at a lesser price. HTC has taken some serious steps to battle the iPhone 4, and one of the most significant steps it has taken is cutting the price. Customers can avail the HTC Desire at about $55 when they sign up for a contract. This contract includes 100 text messages, 100 minutes, and 3GB of data. Users can also get the Android-powered handset for about $76, when they avail a monthly contract, which will include 500 text messages, 600 minutes, and 3GB of data. The previous package comes for $30 per month, while the second package comes at $38 per month. This move was initiated by HTC to take on the iPhone 4, which has been recently released, and is available on Vodafone, for $332, and a monthly contract.

Whether this move will give the Desire an edge over Apple’s iPhone 4 is anyone’s guess. It will take a lot for Desire to gain an upper hand against the iPhone 4, considering its “new ness”. But then, the Desire is a fine handset, and it is essentially a Google Nexus One unlocked handset, with HTC’s Sense software.

HTC has truly done a wonderful job with the Desire. The handset comes equipped with a 1GHz Snapdragon processor, which makes switching between applications mighty easy. It has a 3.7 inch AMOLED screen, which is fully touch-enabled, and has Wi-Fi, GPS, Bluetooth, and a rocking 5 megapixel camera.

The iPhone 4 unlocked handset  is probably a little better. It has an A4 processor, a variety of connectivity options, almost all that you would expect from a smartphone, and it also has a 5 megapixel camera, and can shoot videos in high definition. Although the screen is smaller than that of the Desire, it has retina display that includes 326 pixels per inch.

All in all, hopefully, HTC’s efforts will pay off, and it will be able to give the Desire a higher market than the iPhone 4.

  • The messaging phone line up of T-Mobile has most of its hardware sourced from Samsung. But the Unlocked Motorola ( Charm ) is an exception to that rule. There introduction of the slider with a QWERTY pad will be bringing Android OS to the list of messaging phones that are affordable.

This fact is known because the recenty posted back-to-school ads are by T-Mobile, where we can see the glory hanging behind all the Samsung messaging phones. These messaging phones include the Samsung Smiley, Samsung Gravity T, and the Unlocked  Samsung (Gravity 3). But the only difference there is, is that of the Motorola Charm’s Android OS. This project is part of T-Mobile’s back-to-school promotions. These advertisements will be enticing for parents, whose kids will be going back to their respective schools, once they reopen after vacation.

Messaging phones are basically phones which concentrate mainly on messaging facilities. They are also known as dumbphones, as they lack the traditional smartphone OS, but they make up this deficit with a full QWERTY keyboard. The Motorola Charm is like a link between dumbphones and smartphones. It has a slide-out QWERTY keyboard, with Android OS. Thus two problems are solved in a single phone.

According to T-Mobile, their phones for messaging will be for free, making the Motorola Charm the cheapest phone with the Android OS.  In other words, it is the cheapest smartphone powered by Google’s Nexus one unlocked phone  operating system available with new contract, for free. Magenta is yet to announce the specifics about the launch, but there is a high chance the Charm may be introduced a month before school reopens. Hopefully, there will be many who would want to lay their hands on one of these babies, and hopefully, the Charm will work well on people.

  • No Silent Mode on Android!!
Posted on July 13, 2010 by Pure Mobile

The Flash technology has recently been integrated in Android devices. But it has been discovered that that the Flash 10.1 player on Android will play the sound, regardless of what mode the phone is on!

Watching a Flash-enabled video on the Android device will have the sound playing even if you put it on silent mode. It is always advisable to use your headphones or earphones if you are with people. Otherwise, you will wake everybody up, and face the consequences. It is quite a problem for Adobe, to have blatantly overlooked this small fact. But then again, the Flash player 10.1 for Google’s Unlocked Nexus one Android is still a Beta version, and so, Adobe can be forgiven for this tiny mistake.

A much hassled user said that most of us are dependant upon on silent mode on all our devices to help the babies to stay asleep. He complains about obvious problems regarding the lack of silent mode which has caused severe disturbance in a number of ways.

Although this e-mail does not quite resemble a proper complaint, it can be assumed that the guys at Adobe are listening at this point. The silent issue will be fixed in a jiffy, hopefully. It could be done so in the form of a patch which is pretty easy to install, or be taken care of in a beta version of the player.

Adobe has to work really hard to establish the fact that Flash on unlocked cell  phones is the way to go now, and in order to do this, Adobe must not overlook these mistakes in the future. Adobe is the leading company when it comes to developing newer technologies for the internet. Its flash technology is one of the best to have ever hit the mobile industry and so it is vital they take whatever precautions are necessary.

With a much more enhance performance specification, the ‘Froyo’ will give the users a really smooth experience of using their phone. This has in fact been confirmed by HTC. In an official statement which was released by them, company representatives have said, “We want all our customers to have an unbelievable HTC Sense experience on Froyo and are now trying to do what we can to get this update available to users as fast as possible. A variety of models such as the Desire, Legend and Wildfire will soon be getting these updates in the third quarter of the year.”

  • Unlocked HTC ( EVO 4G ) can soon be available for you at an amazing price of $149.99. The company does provide an initial $100 Best Buy rebate which makes this phone available to you for a price of $199. However it has come to our attention that Sprint is secretly offering the customers who are willing to deal with a mail-in discount. This gives the buyer a rebate of $50. Therefore, one can get this phone at an amazingly low rate of $149.99.

In terms of features, this phone is definitely well loaded. It boasts of

    • 4.3 inch touch screen
    • A really nice 8 GB camera with dual LED flash
    • 1 GHz Snapdragon processor
    • Wi-Fi, 4G connectivity and the novelty of a kickstand for watching movies on the mobile phone.
    • Plus it works on the Android 2.1 OS like Google Unlocked  Nexus One and has the HTC Sense UI skin.

However availing of this discount, does require some amount of maneuvering on the part of the customer. Once you can get this discount, the hottest Sprint mobile phone could be yours.

Follow these steps to get the discount that you are looking for-

    • Apply for the phone by using the option which says “buy with new plan”. By this, you can get yourselves on their logs
    • Then you cancel your order. What will happen is that Sprint will mail you, offering you an additional $50 discount hoping that you change your mind. This additional $50 discount is compounded upon the mail in discount of $100.

Do not fear, this is completely genuine as Sprint is offering the rebate which makes this phone available at this incredible price. This is really cool and we here really like this as it definitely will swing a lot of consumers who would otherwise not have gone for the HTC EVO 4G.

  • Based on certain tip offs given to us by our readers, we found recently found out that Sprint had indeed stopped their facility which allowed the users to get over the air software updates for the Unlocked HTC ( EVO 4G ) which some users had earlier downloaded. It has been found out that there were in fact certain issues regarding the updates and in the light of these problems, HTC and Sprint together decided to temporarily halt the availability of this update.

Up till very recently the updates were pretty easily available as several users had downloaded the update, however with the rate of complaints increasing, the company has decided to suspend the availability of the software update. In this relation we did speak to the people at Sprint who gave us an official comment. They said, “We have received a handful of reports from customers having some issues with the update. In light of this, HTC Unlocked Hero and Sprint have decided to temporarily halt distribution of this software release until we can investigate further.”

Consumers too have expressed their anger and helplessness in this regard. One of our readers Osilliac told us that, “During my update my EVO just turned itself off. The status light is not even on while it was plugged into the charger. I tried turning it back on but it will not respond.”

However there are certain conflicting reports too as some readers tell us that at times when you leave the phone as it is, even after it turns off, the update does get completed. This is however beside the point, as there are definitely certain issues with the download. Therefore, it is pretty logical that the consumer will get freaked out when their phone turns off suddenly.

So do send us your questions regarding this and we too hope that it gets solved soon.

  • Sprint customers are largely lagging in getting the updates onto their Unlocked HTC Hero and EVO 4G which uses Sense User Interface. Even the most popular of the Sprint handset, the Samsung Moment, is really slow on getting the Android Updates. This is quite detrimental for Sprint users in the United States as unlike other carrier subscribers; they have to wait quite a long time for a release.

However Sprint, through their blog have told us that since the HTC EVO 4G has sold really well and has been well received by the customers across the board, Sprint will be doing its best to get Android updates to their phones such that their customers can be at the helm on telephone technology. There is further good news for the customers is that the new software which will be released as Android 2.2 on the HTC EVO 4G in the form of an upgrade on this phone.

Android 2.2, or what is known as Froyo, will bring in a lot of longevity to the HTC Unlocked ( EVO ) phones which otherwise have a really poor battery performance. With the Android 2.2 there is also the possibility of full flash support for the EVO 4G and hence one can get the updates for the Sense UI. It has also been reported that the Froyo enables the EVO 4G to deliver a higher performance for the customer.

Although it has already been a really long time, one can only welcome the plans for the update to the Motorola Unlocked Milestone Android 2.2. However, tactful reactions are the order of the day as ‘near future’ can be a matter of months for companies like this. Yet, according to the recent rumors which have been around regarding the EVO 4G, one can really hope for a faster launch of the Android 2.2.

  • It was recently announced that the text CS service of Cellular South would be made available to all Advance Pay and unlocked smartphone subscribers. Through this service it would become possible for customers of Cellular South to ask any questions to representatives through text messages. Suchquestions would then be answered by the representatives, again through text. Says a representative of Cellular South, “We make it a point to answer any queries a customer might have via text within 5 minutes of receiving it. Should the answer be such that it cannot fit into the 160 character limit of an SMS, we immediately call up the customer to provide a solution to his problem. We might even decide to move the customer to another resource we feel would be able to better serve him. Our text services are available five days a week from Monday till Friday during work hours. This text representative- customer service is really an extension to our previous groundbreaking online Discover Stores through which users could gain access to various knowledge bases and fast customer assistance. We are also planning on introducing a ‘Do not text and drive’ message in all our communications to spread awareness about the dangers of texting and driving.”

In the past, such text based services of asking various questions to representatives was only available to HTC users that had the HTC Unlocked Hero. Although such a service has still not been implemented by Cellular South on Blackberry’s, you can expect in near future a similar mechanism. Considering the fact that text messaging has now become the way of life for most users all over the world, it is not at all surprising to find that some carriers are extending such services to even their representatives to aid users. In fact, through such text messaging, it is much easier to get a point across and to answer customers directly.

  • If you are a user of Cellular South, be prepared for some sunny days ahead as the Unlocked HTC ( Desire ) is coming to you. While we all knew that the HTC Desire was going to make its presence felt through multiple regional carriers, this new Android device has been claimed by Cellular South. The HTC Desire is a wonderful device being quite similar to the Nexus One having HTC’s Sense technology on top. With the HTC Desire, you have a device powered by a Snapdragon processor of 1GHz, having a 3.7 inch display screen. Fitted with a 5 MP camera and an AMOLED screen, the HTC Desire is equipped with Bluetooth, GPS, Wi-Fi and 3G capabilities.

You can also be sure that the HTC Desire will be loaded with the latest version of Google’s Android operating system as well as the Sense UI that allows for finer tweaks thereby making the mobile phone more pleasing to the eye.  Says the chief operating officer of Cellular South, Kevin Hankins, “Everyone is very excited about our latest expansion together with the HTC Desire. With the Desire, users are guaranteed of a completely powerful touch screen mobile phone that can be used for downloading applications as well as sending and receiving emails. Android will now be taken to a completely new level allowing users to experience rich mobile web music, news and even video. They will be provided a common platform for expressing all their needs.”

Although we are certain that the HTC Desire will make its way to U.S. Cellular, it has still not been decided when or how much the phone would be priced at. Irrespective of when it is launched or how much it costs, since HTC is planning on launching with U.S. Cellular, it is a sign that the company is doing well in American markets.
