Griffin Survivor
  • Have you been waiting for the famed “nodo” Windows Phone 7 update that was mostly famous for under delivering on the wants of their customers? The company first started offering the updates not too long ago, but disappointed customers when they announced that the copy and paste feature that they were looking for was not going to be available at the time. In fact, for most phones, they announced that they could expect quite a long wait. Then, there were problems with the actual update itself. Users were unable to actually receive the update, and Windows Phone 7 such as LG C900, Unlocked HTC HD7, etc.. analysts quickly backed off the roll out, saying that they were going to be taking more time to look at the current issues before rolling it out to other phones.

However, this has not lasted long. There have been a number of hackers that have put together a tool that will allow users to auto-update nearly any Windows Phone 7 device without official support from Microsoft. Keep in mind that there will be no support available on this update, so you should use the tool at your own risk.

The update hack came when Microsoft released a repair tool several days ago for phones that had been damaged during the previous failed update. It was supposed to fix a few minor errors that had afflicted some phones that had attempted to update. Upon closer inspection, hackers were able to actually deliver the full update to phones via the repair tool with virtually no wait for those that were willing to risk whatever implications may come. It certainly came as a surprise to many, and those that wanted and having been waiting patiently for the update can go ahead and implement it themselves if they are brave enough. So far, not many handsets have any too many problems, but the LG Panther has not been able to successfully update at this time. It will certainly be interesting to see how things turn out moving forward and whether or not Microsoft will try to shut this hack down or just let it run wild.

  • HTC Shooter Sighting
Posted on March 18, 2011 by Pure Mobile

HTC has kept their rumored HTC Shooter smart phone under wraps quite well since the rumors first started. Now, it looks as though some testing has been taking place with Sprint and the company incidently uploaded the results of their test online.

Hardware engineers have to know how well their upcoming super phones can turn out 3D images when compared to competing phones. The phone will reportedly run on Android like unlocked HTC Vision G2 Desire Z, and was testing using a tool that is named GLBenchmark. Basically, this tool looks at how well your phone performs when compared to a similar phone, and then will upload the results of the test in your online account, which others can publicly view.

The results that were uploaded online fall just short of the numbers that were set by the HD Mini, but well ahead of the numbers set by the HTC Aria. The benchmarking software is not able to look at every aspect of the device when it is turning out these numbers, but it did provide some very interesting hardware specs that many have been waiting for.

The benchmark tests revealed that the phone will be running on Sprint, and will be running on the Gingerbread version of Android, which is version 2.3.2. the 960x540 resolution display is quite large overall. It will be based on, what appears to be anyway, the Qualcomm Snapdragon CPU (based on the numbers that were released by the benchmark) and will also most likely be a dual-core CPU. Some have suggested that this will not be a new smart super phone after all, and instead will be a successor to the EVO. Look for the company to release more information about the device in the coming weeks to clear up some of the confusion that the benchmark results may have created.

  • N64 Emulator Arrives on Android
Posted on March 8, 2011 by Pure Mobile

Emulators technically exist in a grey area, legally, but they have been present on Android for quite some time. There are many different emulators that are currently available on the Android such Unlocked Samsung Captivate i897, HTC Desire, etc. , starting with the original Nintendo and going all the way up through the original Playstation. Absent from the Android market was an emulator that most had been waiting anxiously for - a Nintendo 64 emulator. That has finally been addressed by the same person who was behind the creation of previous emulators, going by the name yongzh.

The emulator will require that you have a fairly powerful device in order to run the app, but so far it looks as if everything works as you might expect. Technically, you are supposed to own the N64 cartridge when downloading the ROMs, but of course this is an issue that is overlooked.

The touchscreen only handsets will allow you to control all of the game exclusively from the touchscreen. It might be a little hard for you to control them as well as you could with a controller, but nonetheless this should open up a lot of different games for use on your Android devices. It is a bit surprising that an N64 emulator has not made its way to Android devices previous to this.

Right now, the emulator will only cost around $6, which seems to be a fair price. You might want to look around and see what games you can find prior to downloading the emulator. Also keep in mind that these emulators exist within a legal grey area. Eventually, this issue could be addressed, especially because the emulators are not being made available for free, and instead rquire that you pay for them. Bring back memories when the N64 ruled the land of games.

  • Sony Ericsson has not been shy about their expansion into Android powered devices. In fact, some of their most anticipated phones, including the Xperia Play and the Arc will run on the Android Platform. High ranking officials within the company have stated that it is their goal to become the number one handset provider specifically for the Android platform, but that does not mean that they are not looking to invest in other operating systems as well.

It now looks as though they are planning on release a device for Windows Phone 7 such has LG C900, HTC HD7 unlocked, etc. The device, which had pictures of it leak, shows a slide out QWERTY keyboard, along with a touch screen phone that is running on the Windows Phone 7 operating system.

Windows Phone 7 is known for requiring quite a bit in terms of hardware, and the device which is only known as “Julie” right now reportedly features a 1 GHz processor that should be more than capable of running the Windows Phone 7 Operating System.

So, while Sony Ericsson has openly admitted that they are focusing on the expansion of their Android devices that does not necessarily mean that they are going to be neglecting other operating systems as well. As Windows Phone 7 continues to climb in popularity, look for more b ig handset manufacturing companies to release devices for the OS.  Although Android might be the trendy choice at this point. Windows Phone 7 provides a very usable alternative that is well made, easy to use and is a huge upgrade for users of previous Windows phones.

It will be interesting to see if they continue to expand farther into the Windows Phone 7 arena, or if they continue to focus on expanding into Android. Either way, Microsoft has to be happy with the progress of their operating system which has slowly become one of the more popular options available for handset manufacturers.

  • Windows Phone 7 Update Is Here
Posted on February 24, 2011 by Pure Mobile

Microsoft announced that the first update for their Windows Phone 7 operating system such Unlocked LG c900 is finally here. The update has been rumored to be coming soon for quite some time. Although it has been highly anticipated, some of the more prominent feature upgrades were not included. The upgrades that many were expecting, such as the ability to copy and paste, were mysteriously absent in the first upgrade for the operating system that is suddenly gaining a following.

It also does not include third party multitasking support, which was one of the biggest features that many thought may be included in the update. The update does provide users with a number of fixes, and is probably serving as a test run for the company to roll out bigger, more prominent features in the future. This might end up being a good thing, and allow them to seamlessly transition in the future when these features are added.

Users will likely first hear about the update on their phones. They will be notified directly on their devices. They will also need to connect their phones to a desktop computer in order to install the new software.

Now that the first update for Windows Phone 7 has been released, you can expect the company to more continually roll out updates in the future. With these prominent features not included, Microsoft probably knows that they are disappointing some users that were expecting to be able to copy and paste and also multi-task.

Microsoft addressed these issues on their Windows Phone Blog, and provided users with information regarding everything that is included in the update. They claimed that it is “praving the way for all future goodie-filled updates,” making it sound as if this update was a preliminary update more than anything.

  • AT&T HTC Inspire 4G Not Really 4G
Posted on February 24, 2011 by Pure Mobile

The AT&T Unlocked HTC (Inspire 4G) name would suggest that the phone was compatible with 4G networks. This is not always the case, as we have learned from several previous device launches. The phone does not feature full 4 G HSPA+ compatibility as provided by the AT&T network. AT&T went ahead and announced at the Consumer Electronics Show that their network had been upgraded in the same way that T-Mobile made their announcement at the same show - by surprise.

Now it appears that the phone is not even as fast as some of the 3G phones on the network. Tests have shown that downloads are slowed, uploads are excruciatingly slow, and overall the device seems to run much more slowly than you would think that it would.

So now it appears that carriers are just placing the “4G” sticker on smart devices without even offering the full compatibility. This is not something that will make most consumers happy, and they should have guessed that it would be discovered at some point. Now it has to make you wonder if future phones with the 4G title will have similar issues with the company’s network. Perhaps the company disabled the 4G ability in the firmware.

AT&T has yet to comment on the reports about the phone not accessing the 4G network in the same way that was promised by the company during the Consumer Electronics Show. With their announcement of their upgraded network you would have thought that new phones with the “4G” label would be able to access the network, but that does not seem to be the case here. It will be interesting to see how they comment on the story over the course of the next few days, or if they let the reports fall by the wayside and ignore them.

  • HTC Desire HD Unlocked Review
Posted on February 9, 2011 by Pure Mobile

The Unlocked HTC Desire HD is a phone that has received a ton of attention from various members of the mobile community in recent weeks, since the phone was first announced. There are some very good qualities seen in the phone, which should attract a large number of users.

To start, it has a huge 4.3 inch touchscreen display, WVGA, with a 800 x 480 resolution. The screen is one of the best parts of the phone, but also may cause the battery to drain a bit quicker because of its large size. The HTC Desire HD Unlocked also comes with an 8 megapixel camera and dual LED Flash, along with 720p high quality video and a 1 GHz processor, as has become standard in the mobile industry.

The hardware is very unique. The case of the phone is made out of aluminum and has a unibody design. The case is carved out of a single piece of a light weight metal. IT feels different to the touch than cases from other phones but should provide a bit more protection than other kinds of cases. The phone also has a flawless browser, which has received rave reviews from those that have gotten to test it.

One problem noticed in the HTC Desire HD unlocked is that the camera lens is left unprotected because of the way that the case is designed. It will certainly be interesting to see how popular the phone becomes. At nearly $500 without a contract, some would argue that it is a bit pricey based on the prices of phones with similar specs in the space. Overall, the HTC Desire HD Unlocked is a great phone that continues to display the quality of devices that HTC is putting out. Its huge screen and awesome general performance make it a hot commodity.

  • Firefox 4 Beta Released for Android
Posted on February 3, 2011 by Pure Mobile

Are you a fan of the Firefox browser on Android devices? If so, then you might be interested in giving test driving the fourth version of Firefox for Android machines such as HTC Desire unlocked, Samsung Captivate i897, etc. Keep in mind that Firefox may not be the most popular - or most stable browser for the devices, but it has managed to garner a huge following that swear by it.

Mozilla knows that the data networks bottlenecking and adding extra seconds onto loading time is a big deal for most consumers who have grown accustomed to instant gratification when searching the web. They have toned down on the heaviness of their previous Firefox releases with Firefox 4, and have made the newest release completely about an increase in speed. They claim that the newest build of the browser will allow you to surf the web over three times faster than it did before. This information was obtained using the Kraken Javascript Benchmark, which is actually built by Mozilla so the results might be a little skewed, but it is good to see that Mozilla is focusing mostly on speed in the same way that Chrome did when it first came out.

In the SunSpider test, which is a more popular platform that is not designed by Mozilla, Firefox 4 tends to be about twice as fast as the previous versions. Of course, you probably won’t notice the split second difference unless you are using Firefox 4 during heavily trafficked times of the day.

Mozilla has also passed a total of 100 add on for mobile devices, which exponentially increases the feature list of the browser. Bringing their famous add-ons to their mobile browser is something that has attracted many of their desktop users that missed the functionality that they were used to having on their desktops. Some of these add ons include Ad Block Plus and User Agent Switcher, both of which are already stable and are running without any major issues according to tests and user reports thus far.

  • An update for HTC  HD7 Unlocked Windows Phone 7 is on the horizon, according to an article that was released on the support site for the Microsoft software. In an article that they recently posted to their support site, the company suggests that the update for the operating system could be released here soon. The article goes over some information regarding troubleshooting for the software in case the software is unable to automatically update and install properly.

The first software update for Windows Phone 7 has been highly anticipated and could potentially be coming in the weeks ahead. The update is thought to address a number of common issues and also introduce a number of new features to the software.

One of the most popular features that will be introduced is the ability to cut, copy and paste text from any website or app. This is a feature that has been included on virtually every other operating system through updates if it did not come standard over the course of the last year.

The update will also likely address a recent bug that came to the attention of Microsoft. This bug reportedly causes a large amount of data to be sent randomly over a 3G network. Microsoft was previously rumored to be releasing the update sometime in January, but with just a few short days left in January, and no formal announcement as of yet, it is clear that users can likely expect to see the update come sometime in February. The update has been highly anticipated and will be adding to the feature list and addressing a number of the more overwhelming bugs that have been reported since Windows Phone 7 such as unlocked HTC HD 7 was launched. Although smaller updates have been made available to address more concerning issues, this will be the first large update that the software has seen.

  • Unlocked HTC phone has announced the HTC Evo Shift 4G in an attempt to build upon the popularity of the EVO 4G phone that was released during the summer of 2010. Although the Evo Shift 4G will not be as feature loaded as the Evo 4G, the company placed upgrades in all of the right places to ensure that they were able to deliver a superior product to their users. The release shouldn’t be the media extravaganza that the Evo 4G was, but will still garner a lot of attention.

The phone will feature an 800 MGz Qualcomm CPU. This is the same processor that is found in other popular phones including the G2 and My Touch. The screen is a bit smaller than most would expect at 3.6 inches, but offers a beautiful 800 x 480 LCD screen that delivers beautiful images. The device will run on the Android 2.2 operating system, which has easily been the most popular among the new announcements at the Consumer Electronic Show this year.

The Shift 4G will utilize WiMAX 4G to run smoothly on Sprints network, and should be among the fastest phones that HTC has to offer. The design of the phone is fairly thick and has been compared to the Unlocked Motorola  Droid 2, recently released by Verizon. The keyboard as a great feels to it and is very easy to use.

It is powerful enough to handle Android 2.2 without any issues and runs smooth from one screen to another. We have noticed no lag when moving between apps and screens and the current loading time when you start the phone is 43 seconds.

The Evo Shift 4G will be one of the best phones that HTC has to offer this year, and is a marked upgrade over previous versions of the phone. It will be interesting to see how well the phone is received by current users of the Shift. HTC made changes in all of the right areas to bring users an upgraded experience with a solid cell device.
