  • Twitter Launches New Web App
Posted on May 16, 2011 by Pure Mobile

Twitter Launches New Web AppTwitter has launched their new web app that features a redesigned menu that makes it easier for users to go between their Twitter feed and individual Twitter accounts. The mobile version of their website has already started rolling out. Not all users will see the new version of the site, but you can bet that people will start to see it across the board here soon. Twitter is known for rolling out huge changes very slowly to look for issues before throwing it in front of every user.

The new design definitely shows an improvement over the previous design. The mobile site design of the web app previous to this was quite cartoony and definitely did not match the changes that Twitter has made on their main website.

The native apps are still going to be better for the most part than using their mobile site, but this new design is going to be far less clunky and will be easier to navigate for a large bulk of their users. Web apps currently do not have the same access to the API catologue that apps and other platforms currently have access to. Twitter has stated that most users will see the roll out of the new site over the course of the next few weeks, with larger roll outs coming with each passing day. So far, it is being rolled out to users with Android devices, as well as a select number of users with unlocked iPhone 4, iPod Touch’s and various other devices in the coming days.

    Twitter Launches New Web App

So far the new web app has been received with critical acclaim from users and media sources alike. It is a greatly improved design that is not going to cause the issues that users have complained about for a very long time. It is good to see that twitter has finally addressed this issue.

  • Have you ever wished that you could send an mp3 to someone that you were talking to without having to hook up your devices to one another? The AirPlay to AppleTV support was a similar feature that was recently added to the Android media player. Now, you will be able to send your mp3 from one phone to another without having to connect them, straight through NFC technology. The video that was released also offers a few details that will give you a better idea of how the technology will work. The update first went live in the Android Market throughout the night. You will be able to send the mp3 to someone that is on a unlocked Samsung Nexus S Google, Galaxy S II and hopefully soon other devices.

In order to use the software you will have to have two different Android phones that also have the NFC technology. The file sharing features work over the WiFi or Bluetooth connection strings, and will continually be updated by DoubleTwist.

This is exciting because it is the first of many ways that we will see this technology to be used in the future. The ability to wirelessly send files from one device to another will be hugely popular in the near future. As of right now, only a few devices actually have the NFC technology to make it possible, but you can bet that as more devices are added to lineups with this technology that there will be more and more uses for wirelessly sending files back and fourth.

Several companies have announced new phones that have NFC technology to be released in the near future, so it appears that the trend will continue to grow moving forward as well. Sharing music is just the very beginning, but you can bet that all sorts of files will be shared moving forward into the future.

  • US Cellular has plans to launch a brand new 4G LTE network for unlocked cell phone users by the time the holiday season rolls around this year and will likely offer a number of new devices for their brand new network just in time for Christmas. With other companies moving quickly to roll out more powerful solutions, it appears that US Cellular does not to loose ground and will be rolling out more highly powered networks of their own to draw in more users.

Their plans were outlined and announced today. The first regions that receive the new network will be around sometime during the holiday season, with other plans stating that they would like to extend their new network across the nation. At first, only a few select cities will be receiving the upgrade. These cities could include Milwaukee, Madison and Des Moines, according to the announcement that was made today. Their initial roll out is said to cover around 25% of the US, with future updates to the network expanding their reach.

In order to use the new LTE network, you will of course need to own a device that is compatible with the LTE network. As of right now, the company is not currently offering compatible phones, but you can bet that they will find a way to release some before the network is even close to being launched, although there have been no announcements about that thus far.

US Cellular is aggressively expanding their capabilities after the competition has also done so in recent months. Look for them to quickly roll out new areas after their initial run is tested and they have a better idea of what to expect. The roll out is expected in mid to late fourth quarter of 2011.

  • The BlackBerry  PlayBook is a device that has received a lot of attention in recent months, but is not expected to sell as well as some of the other tablet device that have been available for quite some time. Research In Motion has announced that the new Facebook application for their seven inch tablet that will be available sometime in May. The device will be a business based tablet that should function similarly to most unlocked BlackBerry cell phones.

This will allow for their thirty million users to finally receive the Facebook application that they have been hoping for, and will open up the ability for them to stay in touch with friends while they are on the move. This is something that many users have been waiting to hear, and will probably help them to sell their new tablet device.

Although BlackBerry started out targeting corporations and corporate applications of their devices, they have been moving closer toward personal uses in recent years, and the PlayBook might be their farthest jump in the opposite direction.

The BlackBerry Playbook is a device that has received a lot of attention in recent months, as it is the first jump into the tablet arena by Research In Motion, and the device has mostly impressed thus far. There is no reason to think that the device would not continue to impress moving forward, especially with all of the attention that has been placed on it.

The announcement came via a press release that quickly made rounds throughout the various mobile blogs and websites. The application will allow users to view and add friends as well as new video and photo viewing, and the ability to use the Facebook chat application that comes standard with every Facebook account.  This is an update that many have been waiting for for quite some time.

  • Research In Motion is a company that has heavily targeted the business use of their phones throughout their history, but in recent times has realized that they also need to provide personal use features if they wish to stay competitive in the constantly shifting mobile market. They have continued to lose market share to android devices and have been looking for new ways to expand their features to target more users.

With the announcement of their new “Work Life Balance” technology, the company will be looking for new ways to put together a winning combination, which they hope will be what the Work Life balance provides. The phone marker announced that they would be releasing features that would allow for users to separate work and personal life contacts and data to be separated from one another for more easily access. The new software looks to benefit both the users of unlocked BlackBerry cell phones as well as the companies who use their technology as well.

This announcement shows that they are taking the criticism and feedback from their users safely. Separating the personal and business content has always been something troubling for many users and the hope is that this software, whether in its first or second iteration will be able to provide users with enough features to help them more easily access their data and determine which data is work related and which is not. This is something that many users will find to be beneficial in the long run, and will provide a secure and cost effective way for employees to remain in touch with their personal contacts, but also will limit the loss of productivity as a result. Hopefully the Work and Life balance software will be something that employers find to be useful for their business applications.

  • The Guinness Book of World Records will be releasing a new game for unlocked cell phones, and will be printing the high scores from the game in their book. Up until this point, Guinness World Records have made it a point not to publish the high scores of games that are not popular on a national level within their book. This will be the first time that they have published the high scores from a game that was not popular on a national level.

The game, which will reportedly be called “Guinness World Records: Gamers Edition Arcade” and will feature a number of different games for which the high scores will be tracked. There will be five different min-games in total. One, called Monkey Country will have you take out as many primates as possible in just one minute.

There has been no word as to how the company will track the games to make sure that people have not found a way to exploit the different facets of the game. As with any mini game, inevitably someone figures out a way to beat the programming and garner the high score. It will be interesting to see if they put any kind of anti-cheating in place to ensure that no one sneaks their way into the Guinness Book of World Records. They are usually quite strict, and require that the actual event be recorded.

If this idea is successful, look for the company to consider more ideas like this in the future. The goal of getting into the book is one that many people have, but few are able to do. Now, they have given a way for people to get in without having to call out an inspector.

  • Experian Hitwise, a web analytics company has stated that Bing looks as though it has been able to garner 30% of the US search market from Google. This is a bit of a surprising figure for a search engine that is less than two years old in total. This means that Bing has moved up more than 6% between the months of February and March. Google saw their share of the US search market fall about 3%, leaving them with just over 64% of the search market.

Of course, Google is still the undisputed leader in the US and world search markets. However, some have suggested that perhaps the Bing and Yahoo agreement have made both companies much more effective than Google has been in recent years. The firm states that over 80% of searches that come from Bing and Yahoo will result in finding a website you are looking for, while only about 65% of Google searches will get you to where you would like to be.

Google is certainly falling in the US, but maintains a stranglehold on the world market as a whole. With Bing and Yahoo gaining ground through their agreement, Google will have to figure out how they can maintain their current hold on the US market.

Bing has aggressively pursued unlocked cell phone users since the incident took place, and has managed to carve out a number of deals that will allow them to take hold of some of the market. Bing and Yahoo reached an agreement to run through the same platform over a year ago, and it has been undeniably good to them, as they have seen their overall market share rise quite a bit since the deal was first enacted. Google has yet to comment on the story after it broke.

  • HTC Incredible S Review
Posted on April 7, 2011 by Pure Mobile

The unlocked HTC Incredible S is a device that has received a lot of attention over the course of the last few weeks - and for good reason, it is a very solid offering from the company. Although the specs indicate that the upgrade of the device would be minor at best, just play with it for a few seconds and you will see how much faster it operates than it previously did. The screen moved from 3.7 to 4 inches, which is quite a huge growth for just an upgrade of a previous device.

The device looks pretty plain in terms of style, but that doesn’t mean that it does not perform very well. Its 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor is more than enough to power through the Android 2.2 operating system very easily. The battery life is great compared to previous versions of the device, and it outperforms most competitors in terms of speed. The company has also said that they expect to have a Gingerbread upgrade for the phone sometime by the end of June, which just gives consumers more reason to take a serious look at the device.

Its 8 megapixel rear facing camera, combined with a 1.3 front facing camera are also very attractive options for the device. Although it does not come standard with an HDMI port, it does have other neat features such as a really potent LED flash.

The display on the device is beautiful, and is a huge upgrade over the previous version. The image that it delivers are quite vivid, and really stands out amongst other phones. It has 800 x 480 display that looks insanely clean, and the controls are quite smart. The Super AMOLED display of HTC Incredible S unlocked is definitely the highlight of the device, which comes in underweight for the number of features that it offers.

  • Sony Ericcson is pushing very hard to get their new Android devices that will be coming out this year in front of the eyes of the public. A number of other devices have already been announced, including the Arc, U5a Vivaz pro, unlocked Xperia X10 and the Neo looks like another solid addition to that line. The device will be powered by the already highly popular Android 3.3 Gingerbread operating system.

This is the first time that the device has been shown to the public. There was not word on when customers could expect the device to be released, and the advertisement was only seen along side a “coming soon” warning. So far there isn’t even any information about which carrier the device will be available on. Alongside the device in the advertisement, a few specs and facts about the device were made available. First of all, it will utilize their new CMOS sensor, which allows for users to take great video and pictures, even when they are in very low lighting. It will also feature their Reality display on the BRAVIA Engline,a nd will have a built in HDMI port, which has been a hot commodity for smart devices in recent weeks and months.

The Neo will have a 3.7 inch display, along with a hearty eight megapixel camera that will be able to capture up to 720p video in HD. The standard 1 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon processor was used in the device. Although not all of the information about the device is available at this current juncture, the site did make it clear that it will be available in three colors; white, blue, and red. It will be interesting to see how well received the device is moving forward and also what carrier it will be available on straight out of the gate. IT is possible that it could be rebranded and be available on a number of different carriers, but there is no information to support that at this time.
