In what was a rush of announcements internationally, Sony unveiled the Sony Xperia Z1 today as well. This phone is built to succeed Sony's current flagship, the Xperia Z. Built to be a processing powerhouse with a crisp HD screen, the Sony Xperia Z1 is looking like it could join the upper echelon of smartphones, thrusting Sony near the forefront of the industry.
First things first, this is probably Sony's best build ever. The Xperia Z1 features a lot of glass. The front and back are both built with glass, making things smooth and stylish. The phone is held together by a single, machined piece of aluminum, that softens the edge of the Xperia Z1's edges and doing so about as fashionably as possible. Inside, the phone is juiced with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 quad-core processor supercharged to 2.2 GHz and features a 20.7 megapixel camera, a large improvement on the Xperia Z's camera. The display measures in at 5 inches and is a full HD display.
Like most of Sony's top-end phones, the Xperia Z1 is 100% waterproof. The waterproofing has actually been improved in this model, with ports like the headphone jack no longer requiring protective plugs.
While this phone is certainly impressive, it remains to be seen where exactly it will fit in the changing mobile landscape. Many phones are on the verge of updates including two heavy-hitters, the HTC One and Apple iPhone 5. It will be very interesting to see how this phone stacks up to phones in this generation and the next one as words like octo-core and 41 megapixels float around in terms of what kind of muscle we will soon see in our smartphones. Needless to say, this phone is a bold statement for Sony who signal that they are ready to compete with the big boys instead of just lurking just below excellence like they did with the original Sony Xperia Z.
The case is building towards Apple announcing at least one new phone at their press event on September 10th. While it is a near certainty that one of those products will be heavily rumoured and leak riddled iPhone 5C, the true successor to the iPhone 5 is still somewhat shrouded in mystery. Is it the iPhone 6? Is it the iPhone 5S? Nobody is 100% sure. What we do THINK we know is that it MIGHT come with something new to mobile phones and is sure to really change how we secure our phones.
Leaked photos showing a new design for the home button, and the ever-present rumour of a fingerprint sensor seem to indicate that the new iPhone will include a fingerprint scanner as its key feature. The leaked photos show that there is definitely something new under the hood of the new iPhone and while hardware comes and goes, the iPhone doesn't change much physically as the versions come and go. It's certainly worth noticing as Apple's press event approaches next month.
Additionally, another new rumour has popped up recently, and it's got a golden ring to it. According to, get this, more leaked photos, the new iPhone 5S/6, may ship in two colours. The one you are used to and has become a staple of Apple products, and a new gold backed device. It certainly is an interesting design choice if true but I wouldn't put too much stock in it.
Regardless of what comes next month, the world will certainly be watching as the world's most important electronics company gets set to unveil its newest phones. The world of mobile phones has changed quite a bit since the iPhone 5 launched last year. It will be interesting to see what comes next and how the world reacts to one of the world's biggest trend setters unleashing their next big thing.
Despite an international ban to the contrary, US President Barack Obama has decided to veto a ban on certain Apple products in the United States stemming from the drawn out patent battle between the California-based company and Samsung. This has had a very negative effect on Samsung's value internationally, with their share values dropping from $169.3 Billion to $168.5 Billion, a loss of over $1 Billion.
This is all as a result of an International Trade Commission imposed ban on US imports of certain Apple products, and the vetoing of this ruling by the White House over the weekend. This ruling originally came down in June of this year after Samsung won a patent battle with Apple ruling that certain products, the iPhone 4 for example, violated patents held by Samsung. The veto of this ruling was the first of its kind by a US President since 1987.
What could further complicate this mess is the fact a ruling is expected soon on whether or not Samsung had violated patents held by Apple, resulting in potential US import bans on certain older models of Samsung devices like the Samsung Galaxy SII and the Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1. This decision is expected to be made later this week.
What does this mean for consumers? Not surprisingly, this political and commercial theatre will equate to just about nothing in terms of value for consumers. At the end of the day, companies like Samsung and Apple likely won't change their practices much in the wake of the veto. In the grand scheme of things, this could have a negative effects between the US government and Samsung and their home country of South Korea, who won't look fondly on the US vetoing a major victory for Samsung with just the stroke of a pen. As always, the big winner in this will be lawyers, who are certain to be promised plenty of paperwork as these decisions are appealed and analyzed.
Apple, Samsung, and HTC better have August 7th circled on their calendars. This is the day that a new high-end smartphone is entering the market. LG's G2 is the new contender. Boasting some high-end components and performance, this phone is sure to add another dynamic layer to the phone market and further push tech as companies are forced to take notice.
While we still don't know every feature of the LG G2, what we do know is already staggering. The LG G2 will be powered by a 2.2 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 SoC with 2 GB of RAM. The screen is huge, measuring in at 5.2 inches. The screen is of course full HD and will have a resolution of 1920x1080. It will house a 13 megapixel camera and will also feature dual speakers, taking on the HTC One as another smartphone with stereo sound. Lastly, this LTE phone will run on the Android 4.2.2 Operating System. Clearly this phone was built and designed to challenge the best of the best.
There are some interesting factors to be determined when it comes to this phone. Firstly, while it is being unveiled on the 7th, we don't know when this phone will be on shelves. Secondly, a phone with the specs that the G2 has should be quite expensive. In order to catch attention LG will need to be competitive price wise. In fact, undercutting the current crop of phones would introduce some real mayhem to the market and make things very interesting for the big phone companies. Lastly, we don't know if these are the full specs for the phone. How much more can they cram in that chassis? We'll have to wait and see if LG stands pat or has any tricks up their sleeve. PureMobile will be on top of the announcement and we'll keep you updated on this new smartphone from LG.

The cold case of what Apple has been up to has possibly been cracked. Photos, shown above and leaked over the weekend, appear to show what could be the next new phone from Apple. Branded with the name "iPhone 5C", and knowledge that Apple's next phone is supposedly low budget, will prompt jokes of the iPhone 5Cheap, but we have reason to believe that the C will in fact stand for something else.
The C in iPhone 5C could stand for colour. It is believed that the new iPhone, which will be a budget phone in terms of hardware, will borrow from the iPhone line and introduce a wide range of colours in terms of casing. The phone itself is expected to come in at a mid-tier price despite its potentially low grade hardware, making it appear that the apple won't fall too far from the tree.
As for a launch window, nothing is set in stone. It is expected to launch side-by-side with Apple's new flagship phone, whether that be the iPhone 5S or iPhone 6. That timing hasn't exactly been nailed down, but some say it could be as early as September. The iPhone 5S or 6 is expected to be something more akin to what we are used to with Apple, a new top of the line smartphone that is sure to shake up the mobile landscape. In terms of what the 5C is expected to be, think BlackBerry Q5. A clearly inferior, yet more financially palatable version of the BlackBerry Q10. Apple has been experiencing sales issues over the past year and a surge in competition from brands like Samsung and HTC, making their status as the top phone somewhat cloudy. With a new line of phones, including a variety of options, it wouldn't be surprising to see Apple propel itself far above the competition with its new phones.
