  • iLuv ISP123 SmashBox pro Portable Stereo Speaker Case Black

Music lovers and active types rejoice! There's finally a phone case designed with you in mind, and it's Pure Mobile's accessory of the week. iLuv's SmashBox Pro is a portable speaker case that protects your phone while acting like a mini stereo.

And while we've reviewed both portable speakers and phone cases on the Pure Mobile blog before, we've never seen an accessory that quite so perfect a hybrid between the two.

Back in the old days, when you went out jogging, hiking or cycling, you took along a discman (remember those?) or a walkman (geez, you've got to be old if you know what that is.) But portable music is all about smartphones these days, which is great. We can almost hear Gandalf voice in your heads, saying "one device to rule them all, and in the darkness bind them."

But your phone is pretty fragile, at least for a mountainside hike or the constant impact of a hearty jog. And though you can always listen with headphones, earbuds do tend to pop out when you're active. So the idea behind the SmashBox Pro is to let you listen with speakers, while protecting your phone inside a totally enveloped zip case.

iLuv ISP123 SmashBox Pro Portable Stereo Speaker Case black interior

It's designed so it can be fastened to your backpack or even to the handlebars of your bike. And where you go, your music goes with you, thanks to exterior controls that not only let you play and pause your tracks but also answer and end calls.

As for sound quality, the general consensus from reviewers is that the sound is big and clear, much better than you'd expect from a set of speakers that's so compact. Meanwhile, the case is ultra-protective and secures your phone in place to keep it from jostling around.

It's also designed to fit almost every phone model, from all incarnations of the iPhone, to Samsung devices like the Galaxy S3, BlackBerry handsets and pretty much any other model you can think of. And thanks to the fact that it's powered by AA batteries, it won't unnecessarily draw power away from your device.

And though you obviously won't be able to use the SmashBox Pro as a case for your tablet or laptop, its speakers are still compatible with those devices too, so you won't really need any additional portable speakers. But we still love it best for high-quality on-the-go sound for when you're out and about or peeling around on your bike.

So, if you've ever wanted to cycle past a car blasting your own favorite tunes as the driver next to you wonders where you're hiding your stereo system, you've finally got your chance. Thanks iLuv.

  • the best gadgets for traveling

Everything has become easier since smartphones, and that goes for traveling too. With easy access to maps, GPS, flight and train schedules, our cell phones, tablets and laptops are now an essential part of globetrotting. But almost as essential are certain mobile accessories that help make sure our wireless devices are always working in top order. The following are Pure Mobile's picks for the 5 best gadgets for travel – don't leave home without them!

    1. Backup power

Your phone and tablet are pretty useless if they run out of juice. And not every country has the same type of electrical outlet, so even if you bring your phone charger, you may find yourself out of luck. Be on the safe side and travel with a backup battery pack. Backup power is also great if you're out and about sightseeing and away from an outlet for any period of time.

We recommend Scosche's goBAT II, a high capacity battery backup for iPhone and iPad, or Dexim's BluePack Battery, which works for nearly all devices, from iPhone to Android and BlackBerry.

    2. A sturdy laptop bag

If you do decide to bring your laptop or notebook, it simply won't do to just cram it into your travel pack. Instead, invest in a good case or travel bag designed to fit your laptop securely, with extra room for passport, souvenirs and whatever else you may need.

For an over-the-shoulder style, we like Targus' Classic Notebook Case for sturdiness and organization. And for backpacks, Incase's Terra Campus pack offers padded protection for both your MacBook Pro and iPad, with tons of extra storage.

Incase Terra Campus Pack Macbook Pro iPad storage Incase's Terra Campus pack offers padded protection for you MacBook and iPad, as well as super organized storage for anything else

    3. A good multipurpose cable

Even with a battery pack, you're going to need a good cable for charging and syncing. We like Dexim's Green Cable Universal, which, as the name suggests works for most if not all devices. Featuring EL technology which reduces power consumption, it not only allows your device to charge really quickly, but also glows while it's charging, to let you know when your battery is full. Neat-o!

    4. A wallet phone or tablet case

Especially when traveling, it's nice to have all your essentials – phone, money, and cards – all in one spot. That's easy with a wallet or folio-style phone case. Griffin's Midtown Wallet is the perfect pick for the iPhone 5, with slots for cards and cash, and their Elan Passport does the same for your iPad 2.

    5. Compact earbuds

If you've ever been on an 8-hour flight with an unhappy baby, you'll understand the need for a good set of headphones while traveling. Earbuds are more compact, and easier to cary around, so make sure you've got a good pair that can drown out unwanted noise, like Beats by Dre's urBeats, which are small and lightweight but also have a super-tough metal housing.

    Bon voyage!

  • Scosche myTREK Wireless Pulse Monitor Bluetooth Armband for iPhone The next best thing to a personal trainer, Scosche's myTREK Wireless Pulse Moniter helps you plan and keep track of your training sessions and stay motivated

We've reviewed armbands for smartphones on the Pure Mobile blog before, but today's mobile accessory of the week takes the cake. Way more than just an easy way to connect to your phone during workouts, the Scosche myTREK Wireless Pulse Monitor is the next best thing to having a trainer.

Like other sport and running armbands, the myTREK lets you to listen to music from your iPhone or iPod wirelessly, connecting via Bluetooth. Integrated controls on the armband make it easy to control volume, skip songs, and the like. Oh yeah, and it also works at up to 33 feet away from your phone.

But the myTREK is first and foremost a workout tool. WIthout any wires or chest straps, the armband comes in three sizes for optimal fit, and uses integrated dual LED and optical sensors to moniter you pulse in real time.

So why even bother making it compatible with your iPhone? Well, Scosche has designed it to work like an exercise log, with a myTREK app that essentially turns your phone into a fitness diary that also motivates you as you work out.

With it, you can keep track of workout stats like pulse, calories burned, duration, distance and speed, or even the map route you took while running. And over time, you can use the myTREK's integrated calendar feature to keep score of your overall progress, which you can then share via email or social media.

But here's where this amazing little mobile accessory really fills in for a trainer; myTREK allows you to easily set goals based on health information, and to customize your workouts by activity type. With each different training zone represented by a different color, myTREK will give you motivational audio prompts during your training session, helping you stay within your target training zone.

Like we said, this is way more than just an armband for your iPhone. Scoshe's is about the best fitness-related mobile accessory we've seen to date, and that makes it our top pick for accessory of the week.

  • We've all been there.

You think you're phone's turned off, or at least in silent mode, only to have your mariachi ringtone go off in the middle of a movie, a speech, or at work.

But unless you've been yelled at by Hugh Jackman, chastised by the President, or have otherwise had your mortification bandied about YouTube, it can't be as bad as these cellphone ringer fails.

Here we bring you the top 5 biggest cellphone interruptions ever caught on film. Some a cringe-inducing and awkward, while others are hilarious, but all pretty epic. Enjoy!

    5. Alizé Cornet's tennis match interruption

In a tennis match against Caroline Wozniacki, Alizé Cornet's concentration is broken by a ringing phone as she prepares to serve. The kicker? It's her own!

    4. Hugh Jackman freaks at ringing phone during live performance

During a live performance in a Broadway play, Hugh Jackman and a castmate are interrupted by a cellphone. Obviously annoyed, Jackman breaks character and calls out the rudeness off the offender. Oops!

    3. Darren Criss' own phone halts live concert

It's always embarrassing to have your phone go off during a live concert, but just imagine how you'd feel if you were the one performing.

That's exactly what happens to Darren Criss in this video of him performing Katy Perry's Teenage Dream. Wait for Criss' reaction at 1:20.

    2. Obama responds to "duck ringtone" interruption

It's Obama versus a duck in this one. While giving a televised speech, the President is distracted by a quacking cellphone, and his reaction is priceless:

"Where do you guys get these ringtones, by the way?" he quips as his audience laughs.

    1. Best ever response to a cellphone interruption.

This could very well be the best reaction a performer has ever given to a cellphone interruption.

The violinist in this video keeps his cool after being interrupted not once, but twice, by a pretty loud Nokia ringtone. Just watch it, we don't want to give away the rest.

  • If you own a smartphone but live in an American city that's not all that populous, it can get a little frustrating.

Even if you've got the latest in LTE-capable devices, like the iPhone 5 or Samsung Galaxy S III, your carrier may not even have an LTE network that covers your area yet. But patience pays off, as Sprint subscribers in over 11 small and medium-sized U.S> cities and counties are about to find out.

The carrier announced yesterday that it's expanding its 4G LTE service in a few new U.S. cities, listed below:

Anderson, Muncie, and South Bend/Mishawaka, Indiana; Salina, Kan.; Hagerstown, Maryland.; Peabody, Massachusetts.; Harrisburg, Carlisle, and Hershey, Pennsylvania.; Harrisonburg, Winchester, and Clarke and Shenandoah Counties, Virginia.; and Jefferson and Martinsburg Counties, West Virginia.

As 9 to 5 Mac notes, "the term 'cities' is a little stretched in this instance as each population is either near or well below the 50,000 mark," but we actually see that as a positive. Just because a smartphone owner doesn't live in a metropolis doesn't mean they're not interested in LTE.

And the fact that Sprint carries LTE-capable phones from the likes of Samsung, LG and HTC won't mean much to a possible subscriber whose area doesn't get LTE service.

In fact, writes 9 to 5 Mac, "Sprint offers the iPhone but does not carry the 4G LTE iPad partly due to its thin LTE spread, although it has steadily tried to thicken 4G LTE data coverage in recent months."

But the carrier has been trying to address that. Aside from the 11 newly added cities, Sprint expanded their LTE network this past fall to 100 U.S. cities. Meanwhile, as they continue to brng LTE to new markets, Sprint promises "3G customers in these areas, [...] can expect to see better coverage, improved network reliability and voice quality once the improvements come to their areas."

  • Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer says there have already been 4 million Windows 8 upgrades

Microsoft put the finishing touches on a massive month this week, with the global launch of Windows Phone 8 Monday, and the Build developer conference Tuesday.

The company already launched their extra-sized Surface Tablet earlier this month, as well as holding their Windows 8 event.

But what most of us were really waiting for was windows Phone 8, and now it's here. Touted by the event's speakers as "the most personal smartphone operating system you can get," Microsoft began by highlighting the growing number of apps for Windows Phone, 120,000 and counting.

However, speakers stressed that people, not apps, are the focus of the revamped OS, and called out Apple and Android for not doing enough to really change smartphones since they arrived on the scene.

As such, Microsoft is banking a lot on one of Windows Phone 8's main features, "live apps." Live apps move like live tiles and update themselves, so that your phone becomes like your fingerprint, says Microsoft.

"For example, the Facebook app updates the lock screen with your personal photos,"  explains WebProNews. "A number of app developers including Twitter, Zynga and Rovio are updating their apps to take advantage of live apps."

That brings us to what TechCrunch says the "future of the Windows 8 platform," hinges on – the developers.

Because the OS – nevermind the idea of live tiles – is so new, Microsoft's going to have to lure developers to it for it to really take off. At the moment, says TechCrunch, the number of new Windows 8 apps is "underwhelming," and that may explain the somewhat middling reviews Microsoft's Surface Tablet has received:

"Most of the reviewers cited the lack of apps – and not the hardware itself – as one of the reasons they didn’t enjoy the experience."

But as he took the stage to kick off the Build developer conference, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer already had some positive news about the new OS' reception, saying that there have already been 4 million Windows 8 upgrades in just the few days since its launch. Hopefully some of those interested parties are developers.

But as for regular users who want to get in on the new OS, Windows Phone 8 will be globally available by November across a number of devices, including the Nokia Lumia, and HTC and Samsung smartphones.
