  • BlackBerry Curve 9380 Review
Posted on December 29, 2011 by Pure Mobile

    December 29, 2011

The BlackBerry Curve 9380 is RIM’s first ever-released Curve with a touch screen. The Curve product line is usually an expression of RIM’s understanding for a budget phone and this one supposedly, doesn’t make a difference. It should attract customers with a lower entry price while offering the full BB OS 7 experience.

Physically the BlackBerry Curve 9380's measurements are a svelte 109mmx60mmx11.2mm with a 3.2 inch display... weighing just 98grams makes the unlocked cell phone very pocket friendly.

The new Curve 9380 is basically a downgraded Torch 9860 – it has a less-capable processor and smaller and low-res display.   The BlackBerry Curve 9380 comes with a standard set of accessories - a USB cable, a wall charger and a set of headphones are provided. In addition there is a complimentary 2GB MicroSD card as well.

The following Blackberry Curve 9380 video provides great user interface insight

The BlackBerry Curve 9380 comes with a fixed-focus single LED flash camera offering the highest resolution of all RIM smartphones.  It does however, have a relatively low number of customizable settings.  The image quality is about average with pleasing colors and a good amount detail.

It is incapable of capturing HD videos due in part to its lower processor clock.   The best it can do is VGA clips at 30 frames per second (fps).  The video quality is up, however overall audio is poor.  Enhance your mobility and turn your device into a power tool.  Discover select, stylus & pens, earpieces & headphones, data cables, desktop chargers, car kits and special glider gloves,  accessories specifically designed to make your devices functionally efficient and performance rich.

The web browser is fast and responsive, however, it does not support Flash.  It does provide a solid set of organizer tools. Leaving your valuable mobile devices unprotected is risky!  Discover the latest  innovative protection solutions of stylish top brand bags, sleeves and cases designed to allow you to protect your devices from scratches and blemishes.  Tough on the outside, sweet on the inside brand name protection cases and skins accessories combine complete device coverage with sleek artistic expression.

The following is a snapshot of the Curve 9380 full feature list, followed by its disadvantages.

    Key features:

    • 3.2" 16M-color TFT touchscreen of HVGA resolution (360 x 480 pixels)
    • Quad-band GSM support and tri-band 3G with HSDPA
    • Single-core 800MHz processor
    • 512MB RAM
    • BlackBerry OS v7
    • BlackBerry’s proprietary email service and data security
    • Wi-Fi b/g/n connectivity
    • GPS receiver and BlackBerry maps preloaded
    • 5 megapixel fixed-focus camera and a LED flash
    • VGA video recording @ 30 fps
    • 150MB of inbuilt storage
    • 2GB MicroSD card pre-bundled
    • Four physical buttons at the bottom
    • Optical trackpad
    • Hot-swappable microSD card slot (up to 16GB)
    • DivX and Xvid video support
    • Office document editor
    • 3.5 mm audio jack
    • Smart dialing
    • Ultra-fast boot times
    • Solid build quality

    Main disadvantages:

    • BlackBerry Internet Service account is a must to enjoy all the phone features
    • No physical QWERTY keyboard (a potential deal breaker for a BlackBerry)
    • No videocalling and no front facing camera either
    • No Flash support for the web browser
    • No FM radio
    • Screen has no haptic feedback
    • Poor audio quality and loudspeaker performance

    By John Castell

Blackberry App UpdateLooks like BlackBerry is angling to infuse some more « Crack » back into the once dominant brand with some BlackBerry app updates this week. What do those updates look like? Twitter for BlackBerry will be available for an update to version 2.1.0.28 that includes improved support for the BlackBerry Curve and Pearl users out there. If you’re a BlackBerry user that hasn’t updated in a while, a version upgrade earlier this month includes support for multiple accounts and also for BBM sharing.  Both of these should be searchable in App World for manual updates too. And if behind on these updates, you may enjoy taking a look at the available tablets and newest BlackBerry gadgets to continue to optimize your smartphone device.  Accessories are designed to protect, personalize and enhance your mobile devices.  The latest innovative protective solutions and premium electronic accessories from the industry's leading brands.

  • Status of Smartphone Penetration
Posted on December 20, 2011 by Pure Mobile

    By Aldo Panessidi

As a typical profile... mobile consumers are highly socially engaged, remain continuously connected and rely more and more on their both carrier based or unlocked smartphone's features and applications on a daily basis.

Smartphone penetration has seen a meteoric rise, spiraling from just 18% in late 2009 to 44% in October 2011.  A recent 'State of the Media: The Mobile Media Report'  conducted by Nielsen indicates that 64% of 25-34 year olds and 53% of 18-24 year olds own a snmartphone and have led in smartphone penetration compared to every other age group since 2009.  The individuals in these generation groups also understand that mobile accessories are designed to protect, personalize and enhance your mobile devices.

Some of the more popular smrtphones include the iPhone4s, Blackberry bold 9900, Samsung Galaxy S II and the Motorola Droid Razr.   Apple is the top smartphone manufacturer by operating system with 28.6% of the market followed by Blackberry and HTC at 17% and 158% market share respectively.  Android outdistanced every other smartphone platform with an ever-growing 42.8% market share... leading Apple iOS at 28.6%, Blackberry at 17% and Windows at a paltry 5.3% market share

The top market leaders are also currently jockeying for top position in the tablet market... with Apple iPad 3, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10, Blackberry PlayBook and  the Motorola Xoom.  Enhance your mobility... turn your device into a power tool.  Discover the select accessories, such as, stylus & pens, data cables, batteries, SD micro cards, desktop chargers, earpieces & headsets as well as glider gloves all specifically designed to make your devices functionally efficient and performance rich.

Currently, Android leads all other platforms in every age group, followed by a strong showing from Apple iOS.

Although penetration of Android OS and Apple iOS smartphones tend to be slightly higher among those 18–24 and 25–34, older audiences are beginning to own devices previously dominated by younger groups.

Report: Android Apps Make Only 24 Percent As Much As iOS Apps

    Show Me The Money!

When the sun never set on the British Empire, prisoners were being shipped to Australia as prison labor. Ship captains were paid by the government to transport these offenders – paid by the number of prisoners on the ship when leaving Great Britain. The result? Overcrowding, malnutrition, and death.

The government needed this free labor to tame the harsh continent, so how did they change the behavior of the ship captains? They changed the incentive. When ship captains were compensated based on the number of prisoners who arrived in Australia alive, conditions improved almost immediately and the labor source was preserved.

Apply this concept to application developers in the 21st century and the continued popularity of iOS with those developers becomes a lot clearer. When reviewing the number of mobile devices activated every day (550,000 Android OS vs. Apple iOS’s 450,000), logical math should lead developers to Google Android for increased consumer traffic, and in turn, revenue. Much to Google chairman Eric Schmidt’s chagrin (although he is in denial), app developers continue to create their applications with iOS in mind. Discover the innovative protection solutions which allow you to protect your devices from scratches and blemishes with our stylish top brand bags, sleeves and cases. Tough on the outside, sweet on the inside brand name protection accessories combine complete device coverage with sleek artistic expression.

Why? The money is with Apple devices. And Apple’s device accessories are more uniform and easier to develop for as well. When Flurry Analytics was reviewing analysis between the two platforms, the comparisons were sharp. Samples of in-app purchase data (those apps with more than a million daily active users that are available to both iOS and Android users) showed that the Google Android applications produced a mere 24% of revenue compared to Apple. Enhance your mobility.... turn your device into a power tool. Discover select accessories, such as, stylus & pens, SD memory cards, data cables, chargers, batteries and other premium electronic accessories specifically designed to make your devices functionally efficient and performance rich.
    Show Me The Money!
But before jumping off the Android App Train, keep a few things in mind. Flurry didn’t release the details on what sample size was or other details of the analytical measures. Also, it was only in-app purchases tracked – not paid downloads. So while not conclusive, these numbers to point to potential motivation behind developer projects… And with iOS representing three-quarters of new projects started in the past six months, Google is figuratively still receiving a lot more dead prisoners. If they can change the motivation for developers, Android users will have the best of both worlds: unlocked phones, top of the line apps, and a powerful OS in their smartphone. While the mobile carrier options are different, the mobile device brands, their popularity, and availability are very comparable between the US and Canada. In particular the convenience of unlocked cell phones which better serves mobile consumer in North America with the freedom to choose their service provider  and subscription plan that best meets their lifestyle needs.

So what are the trends and popularity for this year? Two words: Samsung cell phones and Android. According to research giant ComScore, Android is chipping away at the market share previously held by the beleaguered RIM’s BlackBerry OS… In a short three month period Android captured an additional 4.4% of the market as RIM dropped 4.5%.

ComScore Report Reinforces Spiraling Smartphone Consumer Base

Samsung's recent successes have allowed them to gain market momentum thanks to the growing of their  Samsung Galaxy SII cell phone and Galaxy Tablet.   In fact, Samsung’s smart phones account for over a quarter of the mobile devices in the US market today.  This is no paltry amount of handsets based on the newest census of users indicating a whopping 234 million Americans use cell phones. That number is only going up as premium electronic  accessories specifically designed to make your devices functionally efficient and performance rich... turn your device into a power tool.  This whole gambit of new  functionality further help make us multi-tasking masters.

But what are they really being used for these days? This writer hazards a guess based on personal usage: most everything but talking.  And the increase in mobile device accessories, such as stylus & pens, speakers, headphones & earpieces and special glider gloves continue to highlight shifts in user behaviors.  We use them as the pocket PCs to browse Facebook (and update statuses), indulge in online shopping (after using the bank app to check account balances), fill the social calendar via texting, stream music from Pandora while running, or keeping fidgety fingers occupied while waiting in line with a quick game of Solitaire. As the ComScore report indicates time and again, the collective consumers are driving trends and commerce that the carriers and handset manufacturers cannot ignore.

  • RIM Rebrands BBX as Blackberry 10
Posted on December 8, 2011 by Pure Mobile

    By: Aldo Panessidi

A lingering black cloud seems to be looming over Blackberry-maker RIM.  Starting with their announcement of a huge write-off on its Playbook Tablet, then having one of their company executive facing legal charges following a stampede at new device launch in  Indonesia and just last week having  two executives behaviour divert a plane.  Most recently, RIM was forced to rebrand their next-generation BBX platform to BlackBerry 10 after a trademark dispute with Basis of Albuquerque, New Mexico.

RIM Rebrands BBX as Blackberry 10

Our sources indicate that software company Basis International released a statement saying that a US federal court in Albuquerque has granted a temporary restraining order against RIM, barring it from using Basis' BBX trademark.  The judicial injunction officially bars RIM from using the trademark at its Asian DevCon conference on Wednesday and Thursday in Singapore.  This conference typically introduces a plethora of innovative protective solutions and premium electronic accessories from the industry's most respected and leading brands.

"RIM doesn't typically comment on pending litigation, however RIM has already unveiled a new brand name for its next generation mobile platform. As announced at DevCon Asia, RIM plans to use the 'BlackBerry 10' brand name for its next generation mobile platform," RIM said.  Leaving your valuable mobile devices unprotected is risky!  Protect your devices from scratches and blemishes with stylish top brand accessories.

RIM Rebrands BBX as Blackberry 10

Research in Motion is counting on the BBX platform technology to revive its BlackBerry franchise, yet, it seems that is has run into trouble even before the company could install the system in its latest BlackBerry smartphone line.

Albuquerque-based Basis International claims the "BBX" name is protected by trademarks it holds and that they had earlier threatened to take legal action against RIM unless it stopped using the moniker.  Moreover, Basis said RIM had refused requests to stop using the moniker at the DevCon conference, which resulted in the company filing for the temporary restraining order.  BAs for Blackberry, BX had been the planned name for the software that would power the phones, which will mark a transition to a form of the QNX operating system presently used on the PlayBook Tablet.

School districts received a number of grants to purchase tablets to increase interactive learning and pique student interest and raise productivity.  Faced with the decision of choosing a tablet, educational institutions are investigating and evaluating the benefits and shortcomings of various mobile tablets and tablet accessories available on the market.

Some of the many benefits are: physical size, applications, streamlined user-friendly features. However, the vast majority of these tablets don't come equipped with CD/ DVD ROMs or USB ports that are traditional means of backup for the typical user.  It appears that Acer had these limitations in mind when it quietly developed and introduced the Acer A500. This is a consumer centric honeycomb product that is not only affordable but also includes full-size USB ports and is cost effective.  Discover the latest innovative protective tablet solutions and premium electronic tablet accessories.

Acer Launches Affordable USB Equiped Tablet

The new Acer A500 model boasts a 10.1 inch screen with a full gigabyte of RAM and an option of 16 or 32 gigabyte internal storage. The 2 megapixel front facing camera and an 3260mAh battery  holding an 8 hour charge; coupled with a USB port and microSD card option for 32GB external storage for the pragmatic user. Other tablet showcases more impressive technical specs, but it all comes down to the customer needs.

This is indeed a pragmatic option (not necessarily aesthetically appealing one at 12mm thick), the specs of this Acer tablet make it a contender as an entry-level purchase. For those customers drawn to a tablet’s « look » and flashier features, they may want to consider the Blackberry PlayBook or Apple iPad or the Samsung Galaxy offerings.

Acer Launches Affordable USB Equiped Tablet

For the Android fans out there, this tablet is slated to launch with Honeycomb but will be upgraded to Android 4.0 soon after its release. The roadmap as of now is unclear, but would make a lovely and practical addition to any consumer’s Android family of products.

End of 2011 brings a mixed bag of news – Stealthware to Empowered Canadian ConsumersBefore October, the casual smart phone consumer was likely blissfully unaware of the existence of a company by the name of Carrier IQ. Thanks to researcher Trevor Eckhart, it has come to light that the stealth software company is recording keystrokes, SMS messages and other information and possibly reporting the data back to their servers. Carrier IQ’s response? Issuing a cease and desist letter to the whistleblower, Eckhart, and releasing a media alert dismissing the accusations saying that they are “not recording keystrokes or providing tracking tools.” Enjoy the freedom brought about by unlocked phones... which allow you to choose not only the service provider but the plan that best meets your lifestyle needs.
The potential privacy contagion is rumored to be limited to certain smart phone OS’s, so be an informed consumer and review all your mobile device options. The best part is the great offerings and releases of new phones and from Apple, Blackberry, Samsung, Motorola, HTC and everything in between during the holiday season! This Holiday Season - protective accessories solutions make excellent and greatly appreciated stocking stuffers.

End of 2011 brings a mixed bag of news – Stealthware to Empowered Canadian Consumers
And to end on a high note, legislation may be in the works to bring greater data equality and accessibility to all Canadians. Christian Paradis, the Minister of Industry, recently made significant remarks at the International Institute of Communications Canada Conference in Ottawa that rolled out “an update on measure taken to support the digital economy in Canada […] Canadians should receive the same services wherever they live.” The implications of this could be huge, ending regional monopolies by carrier based on tower service areas. Putting the power of choice back into the hands of the consumer who could better take advantage of unlocked mobile devices creates a competitive environment to drive technology and affordable, customizable plans. Music to all Canadians’ ears!
