  • New BlackBerry Messenger Leaks
Posted on January 5, 2011 by Pure Mobile

The BlackBerry messenger is an application that is constantly updated. Now it appears that version 5.0.1.45 has made its way online. The news of the new message made its way online shortly after the leak. The newest version provides a number of adjustments that allow the messenger to perform better on a day to day basis. Research in Motion has added a number of speed enhancements that allow you to more quickly send and receive messages through BlackBerry messenger and has also added the ability for multiple parties to take part in group chats, a feature that has been waited for a long time by users.

At this point, the leaked version does not work on devices running on BlackBerry OS5 like unlocked BlackBerry Bold 9700, but that could change before it is officially released. If you plan on installing the leaked version of the software, remember to back up everything first as a number of users have reported issues and lost data after installing. Also, remember to follow any installation instructions provided to you by the book so that you do not run into any unwanted issues. An improperly upgraded device could become inoperable in some situations.

This upgrade should satisfy the millions of BlackBerry Messenger users that are constantly looking for new features. The speed enhancements should mean that users can more quickly share data with one another and it also means that group chats will allow users to chat between several different parties, a feature that has been rumored for a long time but has never been formally announced.

It will be interesting to see what BlackBerry unlocked cell phone has to say in their formal announcement for the update that is reportedly forthcoming. The features that they have added also allow you to integrate music that could potentially be shared with your chat friends later down the road. Could the BlackBerry Messenger become more of a collaborative tool in the future than a chat app?

  • With nearly the entire world starting to pick up on the smart phone trend, it is a bit of a surprise that it has taken this long for the largest of companies to get serious about the implementation of security measures, especially with the rising prevalence of identity theft in an online data-rich world. Verizon recently announced that they were working with Lookout, a company that is known for their apps that use geolocation features for BlackBerry, Android and LG C900 unlocked Windows Phone 7 Devices. Verizon has phones that use all of the mentioned operating systems, and their deal with the small security company should help to ensure that no large leaks take place in the future.

In addition to the changes that Verizon is making, RIM announced that they would be releasing their new product, the “BlackBerry Protect,” which will lock and erase all of the data from a misplaced phone, as well as allow users to make wireless backups directly from their phone. This is needed especially since the Unlocked BlackBerry is a device that is mostly used for business situations, the data that could potentially be on one could be damaging in situations where it is stolen.

AT&T also has deals with McAfee and MobileIron on the table. They also recently announced that they would be opening a new security laboratory in New York City which would be charged with developing new security measures directly for the company in an effort to prevent malware, worms and other threats that have become so prevalent on PCs.

It is nice to see that these companies are taking the security of their users more serious. As things stand right now, far too little effort and investment has been put into the security of the users and this shift shows that companies are realizing exactly how much data they are trusted with on a monthly basis, and how important it is to some businesses.

  • Virgin will be releasing the popular “Project” magazine application for free to all of their unlocked cell phone users during the Christmas season. The application, which usually costs $2.99 will be available for download. The magazine, which Virgin has called a “revolutionary multimedia magazine” allows users to browse from one page to another through the application, opting to move away from the standard paper magazines that we traditionally read. The magazine comes complete with cover shots and all of the advertisements and full page photos that you would expect from a regular magazine.

The information in the app is updated on a daily basis. They focus their journalism efforts on international culture, design, and entertainment. In one recent cover of the magazine, Jeff Bridges is pictured in a story about his upcoming “Tron” movie.

The magazine has quickly increased in popularity in recent years and has continually attempted to change the way that magazine reading is viewed. They focus on providing smart, readable articles that deliver the information to the reader in an interesting way. Many of the pieces in the magazine have a slight-opinionated feel to them, which only adds to the fact that it is more entertaining to read, because you feel strongly about most of the editorial pieces.

This is a deal that you ca not miss if you are looking for solid information on international topics that are encompassed by culture, entertainment and travel. As Project continues to grow in size, you can bet that they will not have a deal this good again any time soon, so its best that you take advantage of it when you have the opportunity.

  • The TimmyMe app will now work with the Unlocked BlackBerry Bold 9780, a device that had previously not been able to use the app. The app will allow you to find the closest Tim Hortons location in your area with just the click of a button. The restaurant has been popular in Canada for quite some time and for that reason the app has gained popularity in recent years as well. It is nice to see that they are increasing the capabilities of the app, and making it work with more devices. The app has received a lot of downloads, but has not been available for every device that runs on the BlackBerry software.

The app will also allow you to save orders through a  notepad. When it was first released, the app would only show you the nearest location to you, but was recently updated to allow you to take a look at the ten closest, so if you are heading somewhere nearby in the area you will always have a Tim Hortons within reach.

The app was also recently expanded to the iPhone 4 unlocked on operating systems, where it has also become immensely popular. The app will probably spawn many like it for different types of businesses because of its ease of use and its quick rise to popularity in the app marketplaces across various platforms.

Hopefully they will continue to expand on the number of devices that the app will work with. You would think that with the popularity of the app and all of the new business it could potentially generate, that they would want to continually add new devices. More updates are on the horizon for the application, and hopefully the upcoming features that they add will give you more options and look up locations in other areas.

  • RBC, a popular mobile banking provider announced the release their unlocked iPhone 4 app earlier in the day. It came as a bit of a surprise, then, when later in the day they also announced that they would be releasing a BlackBerry app as well. It was interesting that the announcements did not come at the same time, but nevertheless, the outcome in the same in the end.

The app appears to be quite useful, allowing you to check the balance of any of your accounts, transfer your funds from one account to another, pay any outstanding bills that you have, transfer money to other banks and even find the closest ATM to you.

The app has been released in both French and English. The total space that it takes up is 3 MB, and the phone is compatible with six different types of Unlocked BlackBerry devices. The company has made a demo available on their website for those of us that would like to try it out. They boast speed, safety and security in the long run.

As more banks continue to add applications for their users to manage their funds with, security has always been a big concern. RBC has stressed that they have gone to great lengths to ensure that they keep their users, and their money secure. All of the proper channels are in place to make sure that no one gains control of your account.

The company did not say in their announcement whether they were planning on releasing a version for other platforms as well. You would think that they would be interested in releasing something for Windows Phone 7 as it becomes more popular or even the Android platform, where a large number of their users probably reside. So far no substantial bugs have been reported with the RBC online mobile banking software.

  • With rumors of the Playstation Phone everywhere, Sony announced today that they would be adding Playstation app to their resume. The app will only be available for Android and iOS devices. The app will give users a number of options. Unfortunately one of those options will not be to play Playstation games on their phone. The app works in a way that is similar to the XBox Live features that are available on LG C900 Unlocked Windows Phone 7.

The app will grant you access to all of the most up to date news on the Playstation platform and will also let you see what your friends are playing and whether or not they are online. Now you do not even have to get up and walk to the Playstation to see which of your friends are online. If you are feeling like you might want to play some online games, simply look up who is online on your phone and see if anything catches your eye.

The app will launch first in Europe, including in France, Germany, and Spain. Sony also said that they were looking to expand the features and countries that will carry the app in the near future. This is to be looked at as a testing period to make sure that everything is running smoothly.

Unlocked iphone 4 iOS devices will have to be running version four or above to use the App, and Android phones have to be using 1.6 or a higher version. They did not announce when this would be coming to the US but if it is successful in its initial releases, you can expect it to make its way here very soon.

Here’s to hoping the next announcement from the company is the Playstation Phone which has had several videos of it released but has received no official confirmation from Sony Ericsson.

  • BlackBerry Breaks into News Feeds
Posted on December 14, 2010 by Pure Mobile

Have you been waiting for a usable RSS reading application to come to the BlackBerry  unlocked handset? Many have, and RIM announced today that they have started the process of beta testing a new app that is called BlackBerry News Feeds, which will work in a way similar to that off other RSS feed readers. The company announced that they focused a creating a clean feed reader that would be easy for all of their users to use. As of right now, the biggest complaint regarding the new application is that there is no support with Google Reader, which is not something that they were expected to include anyway.

Adding new feeds to your feed reader is very simple, and also allows you to look through unread items, mark currently unread items as read, and share them with other friends that are also using the BlackBerry News Feed app.

The app went live today on the BlackBerry App World homepage and will also be available through their Beta Zone. Most of the major bugs seem to be already worked through, and the app runs fairly seamlessly already. RIM did not announce any plans to expand upon the features offered and instead seems to be focusing on offering a clear and concise reader that will be easy for their large number of users to operate.

This is an application that has been requested by many of their users for quite some time. The app will also include features that allow you to watch your various social feeds as well as website feeds and instant messenger feeds. Hopefully at some point in the near future they include some sort of integration with Google Reader, which has become the most popular RSS feed reader in recent years. The inclusion of that integration would make use of the BlackBerry News Feeds app much more viable for many of their users.

  • Skype Prepares for New Cloud Features
Posted on December 8, 2010 by Pure Mobile

Skype is getting ready for some cloud based features that should further expand their calling platform. You can imagine the type of features that they would be able to implement through the usage of cloud computing. The move would suggest that Skype is looking to expand further than their current user base and start to offer solutions for enterprises and corporations. Google Voice was recently made available to smart phone users through an app that is available for unlocked iphone 4 iOS, and some have suggested that perhaps Google will look to release an enterprise-level solution some time in the future as well, and Skype is apparently taking heed of these warnings.

Some have suggested that perhaps Skype is gearing up to team up with Facebook to expand their offerings and allow Facebook users to call one another from their profile pages, but that is only speculative at this point. Other experts have suggested that Skype could be looking to team up with Microsoft to utilize their cloud system that is in place.

Either way, the announcement of the integration of cloud features is something that shows that Skype is preparing to extend their service in some way. The move to cloud computing will give them a lot more to work with and will give them the opportunity to expand upon their currently offered features.

Skype has already been able to integrate their service with other platforms, but with other alternatives popping up in recent months, both in the form of personal computer applications and smart phone apps, Skype appears poised to build upon their current system and expand it into something that would make the barrier of entry much harder for startup businesses that could potentially threaten the success of Skype. Look for Skype to elaborate on their plans over the course of the next few months as they move most of their system tot he cloud.

  • The Unlocked BlackBerry Phone PlayBook is a device that has been highly anticipated by tech enthusiasts across the country since it was first announced. Today, at the TabLife conference it was announced that they will be offering the new tablet that is manufactured by Research In Motion, the BlackBerry Playbook. The announcement came from David Neale who is the Vice President of their Special Projects committee. During the conference they took some time to show off the features of the PlayBook and give those in attendance a good idea of what the tablet is capable of and how it will instantly become a direct competitor of the iPad.

A video of the demonstration is supposed to make its way online soon. The PlayBook is being marketed as a tablet device for professionals on the go who need the business flexibility that is not offered by the iPad and other competing devices. It will have a 7 inch LCD display, which is slightly smaller than some of the competing tablets that will be making their way to the market in the coming months.

The PlayBook processor will consist of a 1 GHz dual Core Multiprocessor along with 1 GB of ram installed. The device will reportedly cost less than $500, which would make it noticeably cheaper than some of the alternative devices that have been announced over the course of the last few months.

The PlayBook is a device that many experts think will be the first one to truly rival the iPad, iphone 4 unlocked and gather its own following. It is rumored to feature a number of additions that have been requested by iPad enthusiasts since the device was released including a USB port to allow for quicker transfers. Many experts have predicted that they believe that the phone will be able to live up to the hype based on the information that has been made available both by Research in Motion and by BlackBerry.

  • Virgin Releases Cheaper Unlimited Plan
Posted on December 8, 2010 by Pure Mobile

Just the other day Koodo announced that they would be releasing their $50 unlimited plan that covers usage anywhere within the nation. Because of fierce competition within the marketplace for the holiday season, companies have been slashing prices and changing plans to benefit their consumers. In order to keep up with the trend, Virgin announced today that they would be releasing their own $50 Unlimited “no zone” plan that is eerily similar to the plan that was announced by Koodo. You shouldn’t be surprised to see other companies follow suit in the coming days and offer a similar plan.

The new Solo Mobile plan that was announced will include the ability to make unlimited local and international texts as well as picture messages, and will also come with call waiting and conference calling. the competing offer by Virgin Mobile will also offering unlimited local calling, and unlimited local and international texting but the announcement made no mention of pictures messages. There will be no zone restrictions in the new plan, but you will still be charged quite a bit extra under their current roaming plane.

So far, their plan will not be compatible with unlocked iPhone 4, Blackberry’s or Android devices, which is something that they will likely have to add. The deal is obviously aimed at the lower end of the tech savvy crowd or the budget conscious consumer who only really needs unlimited texting to use their phone to its potential. With so many different mobile carriers slashing prices, it will be interesting to see if any other providers follow suit in the coming weeks and offer plans similar to those offered by Solo Mobile and Virgin Mobile.
