  • The BlackBerry  PlayBook is a device that has received a lot of attention in recent months, but is not expected to sell as well as some of the other tablet device that have been available for quite some time. Research In Motion has announced that the new Facebook application for their seven inch tablet that will be available sometime in May. The device will be a business based tablet that should function similarly to most unlocked BlackBerry cell phones.

This will allow for their thirty million users to finally receive the Facebook application that they have been hoping for, and will open up the ability for them to stay in touch with friends while they are on the move. This is something that many users have been waiting to hear, and will probably help them to sell their new tablet device.

Although BlackBerry started out targeting corporations and corporate applications of their devices, they have been moving closer toward personal uses in recent years, and the PlayBook might be their farthest jump in the opposite direction.

The BlackBerry Playbook is a device that has received a lot of attention in recent months, as it is the first jump into the tablet arena by Research In Motion, and the device has mostly impressed thus far. There is no reason to think that the device would not continue to impress moving forward, especially with all of the attention that has been placed on it.

The announcement came via a press release that quickly made rounds throughout the various mobile blogs and websites. The application will allow users to view and add friends as well as new video and photo viewing, and the ability to use the Facebook chat application that comes standard with every Facebook account.  This is an update that many have been waiting for for quite some time.

  • Research In Motion is a company that has heavily targeted the business use of their phones throughout their history, but in recent times has realized that they also need to provide personal use features if they wish to stay competitive in the constantly shifting mobile market. They have continued to lose market share to android devices and have been looking for new ways to expand their features to target more users.

With the announcement of their new “Work Life Balance” technology, the company will be looking for new ways to put together a winning combination, which they hope will be what the Work Life balance provides. The phone marker announced that they would be releasing features that would allow for users to separate work and personal life contacts and data to be separated from one another for more easily access. The new software looks to benefit both the users of unlocked BlackBerry cell phones as well as the companies who use their technology as well.

This announcement shows that they are taking the criticism and feedback from their users safely. Separating the personal and business content has always been something troubling for many users and the hope is that this software, whether in its first or second iteration will be able to provide users with enough features to help them more easily access their data and determine which data is work related and which is not. This is something that many users will find to be beneficial in the long run, and will provide a secure and cost effective way for employees to remain in touch with their personal contacts, but also will limit the loss of productivity as a result. Hopefully the Work and Life balance software will be something that employers find to be useful for their business applications.

  • BlackBerry will be launching their BlackBerry PlayBook on the 19th of April, and those who have been anxiously awaiting the tablet can breathe a sigh of relief because it looks as though Research In Motion themselves will be handling customer support for the popular tablet, much in the same way that Apple does with their devices like unlocked iPhone 4. Most of the time Research In Motion works with the carriers that sell products to get through the customer support, but are likely looking for the BlackBerry PlayBook to be a much more personal experience.

Usually, you can only get ah old of Research In Motion after you have gone through the proper carrier channels. The Wi-Fi PlayBook will be available to users at a number of different retail outlets. This is the first time that Research In Motion will serve as the first official contact point for users who are experiencing trouble with their devices.

The company is looking to implement an “Apple Care” style of support that will allow users to go directly through them. The only downside is that they lack the number of retail locations that Apple does, which could make it a little more difficult for users to get the support that they are looking for.

They will offer complimentary support for the first 90 days that the tablet will be released, and will also offer a limited warranty for every device and a BlackBerry Total Care program that will allow users to receive care for their device for as long as they are willing to pay for it once the limited warranty plan has ended. There are many different options available to people that are looking at purchasing the PlayBook and were hoping for more support. RIM is a renowned company, and new users should be excited to see if they are able to live up to their name in terms of support.

  • New MTS 4G Network
Posted on April 1, 2011 by Pure Mobile

MTS has finally launched their 4G network for unlocked cell phone such as BlackBerry Bold 9780, Unlocked Nokia N8, Samsung captivate, etc.. that the company has been talking about for quite some time. The network has been in the works for a number of months and was finally activated for users after months of planning. This is huge news for customers that have been with MTS for quite some time. This will speed up their coverage and will also allow for more advanced plans for the company moving forward.

This should provide download speeds that can reach up to 21 mega bytes per second, which will be nearly twice as fast as their previous speeds. The announcement came from the president of the company, Kevlin Shepherd, who is the usual face seen when the company makes large announcements such as this one.

In his statement, he said that they were able to upgrade their entire coverage area and will give more device options to their customers. It was a huge investment for the company but is certainly one that they are looking to pay off in the long run. It is good to see that they are dedicated to upgrading the coverage offered, and provide higher speeds.

MTS has continually upgraded their network, which directly benefits the end user.  With this most recent upgrade to 4G, they are officially up to speed with the current demands of a quickly changing industry. The press release from MTS was very detailed, and gave some insight into their future plans. The upgrade of their network will open up a number of new devices that were not previously available with MTS previously. Moving forward, look for their new phones to be announced, as well as a number of phones that will be able to run on the 4G network that was recently launched. There are many different phones that will open up to the company now that they have a 4G network.

  • Sources from BlackBerry have confirmed that version 6.1 of BlackBerry Desktop Manager might be coming in the very new future. The update will allow for compatibility with handsets that run the 6.1 version of the operating system. The app will allow users to better customize and make changes to their desktop to better suit their needs.

One of the biggest additions from the update is the ability for the BlackBerry such as Bold 9780 and unlocked Torch 9800 to forget the previous devices that have been backed up and synced. This is a feature that has been highly anticipated from users of the service.

A few screenshots of the new version of the software have made their way online that show a number of options that are available to users. You can set the Desktop Manager to ensure that the software will start up as soon as the device is connected, automatically check for updates to the software, and allow for Bluetooth connections to be made.

This is a huge update that will bring a number of key features to the BlackBerry desktop software. One of the biggest inclusion in the update is the compatibility with OS 6.1, which had previously not been able to connect to the BlackBerry Desktop Software for BlackBerry Torch 9800, Curve 8520 unlocked, etc .

Although this update does take care of a number of key issues, not every complaint was addressed with this update. Hopefully updates that correspond with software updates to the operating system will be much more timely moving forward. Some users have been waiting quite some time for these updates, and the compatibility with the desktop management software is a key feature for many users. The app also offers advanced offers for companies that use the BlackBerry Enterprise Service, and will allow for you to check and synchronize user certificates. It will be interesting to see if Research In Motion adds more features moving forward.

  • Sprint Gets Rid of Mail In Rebates
Posted on March 30, 2011 by Pure Mobile

Sprint has officially ditched their mail-in rebates model, and is now going to be going with an instant rebate model that provides instant savings to their users. Verizon also made a similar move at the beginning of the year. The move will mostly effect their most expensive cell phone. The idea behind the mail in rebates is that a certain percent of the customers will never take advantage of it and will just choose to pay the extra costs rather than spend the time mailing the rebate in. Also, there were issues with the mail in rebate never arriving, which was a complaint of many who took the time to pursue the rebate.

The information was confirmed by Sprint. The official switch came on March 27th, and will continue well into the foreseeable future. The company has not stated whether or not this switch will be completely permanent, but did make it clear that they were willing to give it a shot for quite some time moving forward.

If the switch is is only a temporary one, the company has not released any information regarding when users can expect it to disappear, so you might want to take advantage of the offer while it was there. The company made the move shortly after the same move was made by Verizon.

It will be interesting to see if other carriers follow in the footsteps of both Verizon and Sprint. Getting rid of the mail in rebate is certainly something that would be in the best interest of their customers, but may not be in the best interests of the company. Look for more companies to make similar changes in the future if it leads to more sales of smart devices. That is the end goal but could result in reduced revenue for the company, which could mean that the offer doesn’t stick around quite as long as many are hoping that it will.

  • Can you imagine your car being completely compatible with your mobile provider to deliver you updates regarding the charging of your electric car right to your mobile device. This week, AT&T and Ford announced that they have put together a deal that will allow for wireless connectivity to be built directly into to the Focus Electric model that Ford is releasing.

The deal will allow Ford to connect to AT&T for their MyFord Mobile app. This app will be able to let you know where your car is at, and exactly how much it has charged thus far. It will also give you a good idea regarding how much battery life you have left when you are not around your car.

The app also helps you to schedule charging, setup notifications, and even has compatibility with other apps including MapQuest. All of the data is shared from the car to the smart device through the connection that is provided with AT&T.

So far the app will work with Android, BlackBerry and iOS device such as iphone 4 unlocked. The company has not made any announcements about extending the compatibility to other platforms, but even if the pap does not work with your smart device, you can still use the web interface that is provided by Ford.

A press release was released by both companies that explains in great detail exactly how this will work and what users can expect to get out of the new deal between Ford and AT&T. This could just be the first step in a larger process of connecting your car to your mobile carrier and device that could simplify many aspects of your life in the future. MyFord Mobile is available on the Ford website. It will be interesting to see where things head from here.

  • The Samsung App Store for unlocked cell phone such as Samsung Captivate i897, Samsung Nexus S unlocked, etc.. has a bit of a head start over other application stores because they operate on both cell phones and on televisions, but that is not stopping the company from issuing a statement that their app store has officially passed the one hundred million download mark. The mark is a huge one that is exclusive to only a few other app stores in the industry, and even though Samsung crosses through both the mobile and television industry with their app downloads, that does not make the number any less impressive.

It has been ten months since the service first launched. It looks as though Europe is the primary downloading location for users of the Samsung app store. France had the largest number of downloads of any country, with Germany and Spain following closely behind. The three countries together combined to account for more than forty percent of the overall number of downloads from the Samsung App Store since it was first launched more than ten months ago.

The app store is currently home to more than 13,000 applications. This number is smaller than most for unlocked BlackBerry Bold 9780, Torch 9800, etc.. other app stores, but is only seven thousand apps behind the BlackBerry App World store which recently hit the 20,000 mark. The Samsung App Store has quietly grown over the course of the last few months and has become one of the more popular app providers on the Internet. It will be interesting to see if they are able to keep up their huge rate of growth moving forward, or if they will slow down as so many other app stores have. The numbers that they announced are quite large for only having been around for the last ten months, but are still not touching the numbers of some of the more popular app stores, such as the Apple iTunes app store and the Android App Marketplace.

  • AT&T Makes Calling Japan Free
Posted on March 16, 2011 by Pure Mobile

With the recent issues that Japan has faced following the fallout of an 8.9 earthquake and the ensuing tsunami afterwards, AT&T has announced that they are going to allow their unlocked cell phone users to make free calls to Japan till the end of the month. Since the disaster, understandably, it has been very hard for people to contact relatives inside of the country. Making outgoing calls within Japan has also been difficult. Some of those from North America that survived the quake have still not been able to make contact with their families.

The announcement by the company is the first of its kind. Shortly after the announcement by AT&T, both Sprint and Verizon announced that they were going to be extending the same offer to their users as well. They also announced that they were not going to charge users for text message fees to phones that are located within Japan.

It is good to see that these huge providers are stepping up and making it as easy as possible for people to contact family members a world away. With the issues that Japan has had in recent days with both outgoing and incoming calls, this should ease the minds of those back in the states a little bit who were worried about charges that could pile up when they try to make contact with individuals in the Japan area.

Text messages might be the best way to try to communicate, at least until things calm down. This will allow them to answer whenever the text goes through and will not require that they answer a call that may or may not go through. The announcements are welcome, and show that to these companies - it is not always all about the bottom line and profit that they could potentially see from a move.

  • Developer Spacetime Studios, the company that is responsible for making the game Pocket Legends, a unique MMO mobile game that is increasing the expectations for other MMO games that attempt to make the jump to mobile devices. As of right now, Android has overtaken Unlocked BlackBerry cell phone such as Bold 9780, Torch 9800 unlocked, etc.  what most people consider the most prestigious smart phone operating platform across the nation.

The company has beaten the odds. While most developers claim that the Android market and other mobile platforms do not give them enough options to compete with the top companies in the space. After some internal research, Spacetime Studios discovered that they make up to 50 percent more from their Android users when compared to the iOS market.

The ability for users to more easily purchase Android apps might be behind the spike when compared to iOS in iphone 4 unlocked. iOS does not have the easy to use platform that Google has brought to the table.

So while some developers are finding that they are unable to compete in the mobile gaming market given the current structure of app marketplaces, that does not mean that there are not other companies that are able to find the niche that they are looking for, especially with Android users which do seem to differ substantially with users from the iOS platform, both in how they use their devices but also in what their general interests are.

It will be interesting to see if other mobile gaming developers release their figures based on a by system basis. That could potentially shed more light on the industry as a whole. Instead o hearing these isolated negative remarks, it would be nice to know how the industry as a whole feels. It seems to be very dependant on the type of the game as well as the number of titles that the given country has going for it.
