A new report suggests that the popularity of Google’s Android OS is due to peak in 2012. The market will begin a major shift towards a strong Microsoft Windows platform.

Microsoft Windows predicted to take a big bite out of Google’s Android starting in 2013

The market research firm IDC just released the details of its latest Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker report. The firm predicts that, while cell phone shipments will reach 1.8 billion units this year (compared to 1.7 billion in 2011), the numbers reflect stalled growth when compared to previous years. The major cause seems to be the beginning of a rapid decline in sales for feature phones. The IDC forecasts the lowest annual growth rate in their sales since 2009.

Protect your Android devices with the latest innovative protection solutions... stylish top brand cases and skins specifically designed to protect your devices from scratches and blemishes.  Tough on the outside, sweet on the inside these brand name protection accessories combine complete device coverage with sleek artistic expression.  Discover a wide protection collection for:

    Samsung Galaxy S 3Galaxy S 2, Galaxy S2 X, Galaxy S 2 LTE, Galaxy Tab

HTC One SHTC One X, HTC One V, HTC EVO 3D, HTC Flyer and HTC Jetstream

Nokia Lumia 900 and Nokia Lumia 800

Motorola Droid RAZR, Motorola Defy, Motoluxe, Motorola Xoom

Sony Xperia U, Sony Xperia ION, Sony Xperia Play

LG Optimus L7, LG Optimus 4G LTE and the Optimus Pad

IDC analyst Kevin Restivo was quoted as saying, “The smartphone parade won’t be as lively this year as it has been in past. The mobile phone user-transition from feature phones to smartphones will continue in a gradual but unabated fashion. Smartphone growth, however, will increasingly be driven by a triumvirate of smartphone operating systems, namely Android, iOS and Windows Phone 7.”

Microsoft Windows predicted to take a big bite out of Google’s Android starting in 2013

The smartphone market is expected to continue growing over the next five years, but IDC sees 2012 as the start of a major shift. Android has a big lead in the number of devices sporting its popular OS – predicted to be a 61% share by year-end. Apple’s iOS takes second place with 20.5%, one-third the size of Google’s market. The upstart Microsoft Windows/Windows Mobile will probably end 2012 with a 5.2% share of the market, less than one-tenth the size of Android. By 2016, the IDC says the numbers will look significantly different.

They predict that smartphone shipments will continue to grow through 2016, but this timeframe will see a big decline in Android OS use. It will probably peak in 2012 and then begin to lose significant market share to the Windows Phone platform. Apple’s iOS will probably see some decline as well.

Enhance your mobility and turn your device into a power tool!  Discover select accessories such as; stylus & pens, micro SD memory cards, batteries, docking stations, Bluetooth headsets, data cables, HTC Media Link and XMI Speakers all specifically designed to make your devices functionally efficient and performance rich.

Here are the IDC’s predictions. Between 2012 and 2016, Android’s share of the global market will decline more than 7% - from 61% to 52.9%. Apple’s iOS will become slightly less popular, going from 20.5% to 19%. Microsoft will be the big winner, with a quadrupling of its market share from 2012’s measly 5.2% to 19.2% in 2016. This obviously surpasses iOS as the No.2 smartphone platform in the world, not to mention ought to cause Google execs some sleepless nights.

“Underpinning the smartphone market is the constantly shifting OS landscape,” IDC analyst Ramon Llamas said. “Android will maintain leadership throughout our forecast, while others will gain more mobile operator partnerships (Apple) or currently find themselves in the midst of a major transition (BlackBerry and Windows Phone/Windows Mobile). What remains to be seen is how these different operating systems – as well as others – will define and shape the user experience beyond what we see today in order to attract new customers and encourage replacements.”

IDC expects RIM’s smartphone market share to stay relatively flat for the next few years. It will probably hold steady at around 6%. Other smartphone platforms can only expect a mere 3% of the market by 2016, down from 7.2% in 2012. Samsung’s Tizen platform makes up the majority of that 3%. Sorry Samsung. Maybe you should concentrate on Galaxy S IV and beyond.

Leaked images of what is supposedly the housing for Apple’s sixth-generation iPhone hit the Web last week. They show a taller, thinner aluminum case than the one currently used by the iPhone 4S and the iPhone 4. The case could accommodate a larger display – perhaps even one that measures a little over 4-inches diagonally.

    The latest on Apple’s iPhone 5 - a thinner case and a 4.1-inch display

In a note to clients, Ming-Chi Kuo, a KGI Securities analyst with a good reputation for getting his facts correct, outlined what he knows about Apple’s iPhone 5 plans. Here’s a summary of his knowledge of the iPhone 5 specs:

    • A 4.08-inch in-cell IPS panel screen with a display resolution of 1,136 x 640 and 500-nit brightness
    • A display that measures 50.9 millimeters wide by 90.3 millimeters tall
    • In-cell touch elements in its display.
    • An impressively- thin 7.9 mm case (the iPhone 4S's 9.3 mm)
    • A battery that is roughly the same capacity as the one found in the iPhone 4S
    • An HD-capable front-facing camera that has been moved from the left side of the earpiece to the center
    • An 8 MP sensor and a 5 element lens for the back camera that is similar to the 4S but with a larger aperture of f/2.2 (currently f/2.4) to improve the low-light performance

    The latest on Apple’s iPhone 5 - a thinner case and a 4.1-inch display

Some of this information was confirmed in previous reports by that The Wall Street Journal and Reuters.

Dispelling previous rumors about the display size, Kuo notes that Apple chose not to use a larger 4.3-inch display because it would require a larger battery and wouldn’t support comfortable single-handed operation. Apple has contracted Toshiba Matsushita Display, LG Display and Sharp to supply the new panels.

We’re only a week away from the WWDC conference in San Francisco, so we don’t have much longer to wait for a glimpse from Apple’s view of the world.  Recent reports suggest Apple’s next iPhone will launch in September or October along with a new iPad mini.

We’ve been hearing all kinds of rumors about Apple’s 2012 plans for its mobile OS. Here are a few predictions on the street:

    • Big changes in its user interface theme to look more like the iPad - blue and blue stripes, to a sharp silver look.
    • A new Maps app that replaces Google’s.  Apple’s app will map images and data in 3D.
    • Automatic app updates (that possibly require connecting the phone to Wi-Fi and/or plugging it into a power source.)
    • An iCloud keychain that syncs all Apple devices and platforms.
    • iCloud tabs to for opening any tabs on your desktop browser in the iOS browser.
    • A Facebook integration for posting photos and videos to Facebook (similar to what Twitter’s looks like).
    • Location-based profiles/actions through Apple’s use of geofencing that customizes different settings like ringtones and Bluetooth based on location.
    • A location and/or time-based notification silencing feature.
    • Siri for iPad.
    • Expanded Siri functions, maybe even including API access for third-party developers.
    • AirPlay: 1080p mirroring.
    • Live app icons. (In lieu of widgets, customizable icons or live app icons would use fewer resources to show updates on the home screen.)
    • Inter-app communication, solving the issue of apps not being able to share data with one another.
    • Unified omnibox in the browser for URL and search.
    • New multitouch gestures. Possibly two finger swiping.
    • Improved multitasking interface and UI.
    • Widgets in notification center.
    • Improved email, maybe even multiple signatures, and possibly a default for each account.

The debate rages on over Apple’s insistence that its mobile and desktop platforms remain closed. The Electronic Frontier Foundation published a report calling for Apple to adopt a more open model for its iOS and OS X.

The Good, the Bad and the Ugly of Apple’s closed platforms

EFF calls Apple’s platforms “beautiful crystal prisons,” because they impose unnecessary limitations on its devices. EFF’s position is that Apple is hurting users by shutting out developers in the open source community. It should mimic Android’s open source model as this is part of the reason for its widespread use by so many device manufacturers.

On the other side of the argument are those who point out that Apple’s closed model is not just a benefit but one of the most important features of its mobile and desktop devices.

Eric Testorff, a Technology Coordinator in Crossville, Tennessee, points out the benefits of a closed system in the education environment. His position: “Thank God Apple is the way it is, especially with so many schools purchasing iPads. It is good that it is so difficult for kids to download and install bad Apps. Not every school knows how to police that. At least Apple does some of the policing for us. With Androids, it’s like the Wild West.”

Apple’s App Store model as provides a level of security that is appealing to businesses as well. As an IT manager at a large privately held company said in a recent interview, “When we decided to dump BlackBerry last year, we ran trials with the iPhone and with Android phones. During the first week of trials alone, I had one guy crash his Samsung from installing a bunch of poorly made software. Then someone else rooted his phone and all of his stock apps stopped transmitting data. This was just the trial; imagine what would happen if we deployed these phones to more than 200 employees across the company.”

We’ll just guess that his company ended up going with the iPhone.

Regardless of whether your loyalties lie with Android, Apple or BlackBerry, your devices need the protection of cell phone cases and skins and screen protectors. Make sure they have enough juice wherever they go with wall chargers, car chargers, desktop chargers and spare batteries.

According to the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) there’s a new standardized SIM format for mobile devices. The new “nano-SIM” cards are 60% of the size of the smallest SIM card- design currently on the market (the micro-SIM.) The nano-SIM will measure 12.3 millimeters wide by 8.8 millimeters high and 0.67 millimeters thick.

ETSI’s press release states, “The new form factor was adopted by industry with the involvement of major mobile network operators, smart card suppliers and mobile device manufacturers. A new, bolder Samsung is working on building its own loyal legions of fans. Lately they’ve been doing everything right: building great cell phones like the Samsung Galaxy S3, Galaxy S2, Galaxy S2 X, Galaxy S2 LTE, Galaxy Nexus and the Galaxy Note and Galaxy Tab tablets.

Samsung has put out some entertaining commercials showing lines of iPhone-obsessed hipsters who’ll buy anything Apple because they think it makes them look cool. While those commercials were definitely fun, Samsung is sending a big message:  Samsung’s products are cool because they are extraordinary, not because they are “Samsung.”

In order to take a chunk out of Apple’s market share, Samsung knows it needs to redefine the way its products are viewed by consumers.  The head of Samsung marketing Younghee Lee told AllThingsD in an interview awhile ago,” Especially in U.S., people are obsessed with Apple. It’s time to change people’s attention.” Lee said Samsung knows it has to figure out how to “engage with consumers from the bottom of their heart, and not just be a big and functional and rational and reasonable brand.” Samsung is looking to create an Apple-like fervor for its products.

Samsung kicking Apple to the curb

Samsung has a reputation for being pretty slow with bringing its accessories online. Industry leading manufacturers continue to provide the greatest selection of top brand cell phone accessories  from Bags and Sleeves, Batteries, Bluetooth Headsets and Bluetooth Car Kits, Car Holders, Cases and Skins, Data Cables, Earbuds and Headsets, Keyboard and Protectors, Memory Cards, Screen Protectors, Speakers and Docks as well as Stylus and Pens.

It looks like Samsung is starting to accomplish its mission.  Lines formed outside of a few London retailers earlier this week in anticipation of the release of Samsung’s Galaxy S III.  The lines are nothing like the ones formed by Apple devotees, but they are lines nonetheless.

    Se the latest Samsung video:

The global launch of Samsung’s Galaxy S 3 is off to an impressive start. It’s getting the attention of the mainstream media, the blogosphere, and social media. Samsung leads the global smartphone market for numbers, now we’ll see if they can create frenzy for everything Samsung.

Apple’s Asian supply chain is having trouble keeping up with the volume of orders for Apple’s next-generation MacBook, according to a recent report by Digitimes. They say multiple unnamed sources are telling them that heavier than expected MacBook orders have created labor shortages so serious that some Asian suppliers have had to outsource orders to meet shipment deadlines.

Apparently May and June are typically slower months among Chinese companies that supply PC components, and Apple’s orders have caused recent labor shortage issues to grow more serious.

The world is waiting anxiously for the new MacBook laptops and iMac all-in-one PCs to hit the market this summer. Apple’s new notebook computers are supposed to be thinner than older models. Both the MacBook Pro and iMac devices are expected to include new high-definition Retina displays. Apple’s next-generation MacBook Air laptops may be updated with Retina displays as well.

Just a few weeks ago, we heard that Apple would probably be replacing Google Maps with its own version.  For a long time, Apple has been working on their own in-house 3D-equipped program, and trying to get it ready for the upcoming iOS 6. Now, the street has pictures to prove they might be close to getting it done.

First photos of Apple’s iOS 6 Maps app

We obtained  blurry photos has that supposedly show Apple's new iOS 6 Maps application running on an iDevice. (However, the pictures are such poor quality that they could also just be super close-ups of a Google Images screen shot.

Here are some of the details we’re hearing about the new app:

    • It features a refreshed user interface including a brand new navigation bar.
    • It may have a silver colored theme in iOS 6 like on the iPad.
    • The iPhone version of Maps will have a floating locate me button in the bottom left corner. To access 3D mode, peel back the lower right corner of Maps (just like the current version) and enable 3D mode. Switch in and out of 3D mode by tapping a 3D icon in the lower left corner.

Since 2009, Apple has acquired companies that could help them put together their own maps app including Google Maps' competitor Placebase, mapping company Poly9, and C3 Technologies, that specializes in 3D mapping.

First photos of Apple’s iOS 6 Maps app

Apple has already made moves away from Google Maps. In March, they started using OpenStreetMap, an open mapping service, with its iOS iPhoto app in place of Google Maps (after Google began charging businesses for access to its digital mapping services). Maybe that’s what they’re building  upon. The BGR photos allegedly showing Apple's iOS 6 Maps app look a lot like those provided by OpenStreetMap.

Here’s hoping Apple will give us a lot more information on its plans at the 2012 Worldwide Developers Conference, which starts on Monday, June 11.
